Agents can now write and improve their own policy machines inside a fixed environment machine. The environment holds the rules: TypeScript guards and states that people write, that agents never edit, and that you verify with canReach. The policy decides how the agent works toward its goal. It is a JSON workflow a model can write, gated before it runs and promoted only when it measurably improves. The machine's description is the goal.

New APIs

  • decideNext(snapshot, { decide, model, allowedEvents, payloads, lookahead }): a model picks one event that a plain XState machine accepts right now. The machine needs no agent code. lookahead is true or a list of context keys to report.
  • Closed choices: an agent.decide input with payloads becomes request.options.
    • The AI SDK adapter sends a single choose_option tool, and an id that wasn't offered is retried.
    • When the snapshot accepts none of the options, the decision fails at once without a model call.
  • Decision models in the models map: put Jev or another AI SDK decision model next to the language models, e.g. models: { desk: openai("gpt-5.4-mini"), judge: typeSafeAi.decisionModel("jev-latest") }. createAiSdkExecutors answers closed choices through experimental_decide.
  • describeMachine(machine, { snapshot }): a text map of a machine for prompts, with a Goal: line first.
  • verifyAgentConfig(config, options) in /validate: runs validate, vocabulary, lower, lint and explore. Each gate returns a message a model can repair from.
  • explorePaths and canReach:
    • new options: payloads, outputs (the only way to script tool outputs), errors, dedupeBy and maxNodes;
    • payloads are filled from finite event schemas;
    • canReach returns the shortest witness, plus complete, which is true only when no cap, missing output or unexpanded event type cut the search short.
  • Event log:
    • entries carry an optional attempts field that replay ignores, and exhausted decisions keep their attempts;
    • getDecisionAttempts(entries) reads them back;
    • boundary deciders pass { event, attempts };
    • stores gain an optional listThreads({ prefix, limit, cursor }).
  • Interaction:
    • choices (an array, or the name of a context key that holds one) adds buttons that carry payloads;
    • textEvent: { type, field } sets which field free text fills.

Breaking: explorePaths and canReach no longer take text or invokes. Migrate to outputs: { src: [value] }. The simulateAgent scripts are unchanged.

Docs and skills

  • New docs/environment-and-policy.md.
  • New skills/improve-machine, which improves a policy from traces toward its goal.
  • Updated skills/generate-machine, plus the README lead, llms.txt, and the decisions, verify, event-log, human-in-the-loop, machines and generate-machines pages.
  • Two broken anchors fixed.

Example

examples/self-improving-refunds:

  • Environment: a plain XState refund desk.
  • Proof: canReach shows the payout sentinel is unreachable (complete: true) for every proposal sequence, tool result and human answer.
  • Deciders at the boundary: a raw model, Jev with and without lookahead, and JSON playbooks.
  • Traces: runs are stored in an event log store.
  • Improvement loop: reads the store, proposes, gates, replays train and held-out scenarios, and promotes on the objective.

Mock benchmark:

Arm Train Held-out Violations
Raw tool loop 38% 75% 14
Desk + raw model 50% 25% 0
Desk + Jev (lookahead) 100% 100% 0
Desk + promoted playbook 100% 100% 0

Not done

  • The real-model benchmark needs keys: OPENAI_API_KEY=... TYPESAFE_AI_API_KEY=... pnpm exec tsx examples/self-improving-refunds/benchmark.ts.
  • The demo's automated test user ignores choices and can't pass the desk's identity check, so the refunds demo snapshot never reaches a final state. A person in the demo can finish a ticket.

Verification

pnpm run check, pnpm vitest run src examples (1440 tests), the demo tests, typecheck:example-packages, test:cloudflare, check:dts and docs:check all pass.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds closed-choice decisions and interactions, AI SDK decision-model support, event-log features, machine descriptions, configuration verification, and payload-aware path exploration. It also adds a self-improving refund example with JSON playbooks, verification and replay gates, and benchmark workflows.

Changes: Closed-choice decisions and interactions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Decision options and executors
src/decision.ts, src/ai-sdk/*, src/decide-next.ts, src/run-agent.ts, examples/mock-model.ts
Decision requests can carry payload-specific options. AI SDK language models use a choose_option tool, and decision models handle closed choices through experimental_decide. decideNext returns an accepted event without sending it.
Interaction choices and demo rendering
src/interaction.ts, src/index.ts, demo/src/lib/*, demo/src/components/event-actions.tsx
Interaction metadata supports labeled event choices and configurable text fields. The demo exposes accepted choices and renders them as buttons without duplicating covered event buttons.

Configuration verification and path exploration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Payload-aware path exploration
src/verify.ts, src/verify-payloads.test.ts, src/verify.test.ts, .changeset/*
Exploration supports output queues, payload variants, snapshot deduplication, and a node cap. canReach uses breadth-first search for witnesses and reports whether an unreachable result is complete.
Ordered configuration gates
src/validate/*, tsconfig.json, docs/generate-machines.md, skills/generate-machine/SKILL.md
verifyAgentConfig runs validation, optional vocabulary checks, lowering, linting, and optional exploration in order. It returns gate results and stops at the first failure.

Event-log capabilities

Layer / File(s) Summary
Decision attempts and thread listing
src/event-log.ts, src/run-agent.ts, src/event-log-store.ts, src/event-log-store-conformance.ts, examples/cloudflare-agent-host/*
Decision attempts can be recorded with delivered events or exhausted-decision errors. Stores can optionally list nonempty thread IDs with prefix filtering, limits, and cursors.

Machine descriptions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Machine description API
src/describe-machine.ts, src/index.ts, docs/machines-as-data.md
describeMachine renders machine goals, states, transitions, context fields, and event schemas as text. An optional snapshot marks active states.

Self-improving refunds example

Layer / File(s) Summary
Refund desk and playbooks
examples/self-improving-refunds/contract.ts, desk.ts, playbook.ts, playbooks/*
The example defines refund scenarios, a guarded refund desk, and JSON playbooks whose proposals use the desk’s offered events.
Policy verification and promotion
examples/self-improving-refunds/improve.ts, skills/improve-machine/*, docs/environment-and-policy.md
The improvement workflow scores current and candidate playbooks, checks candidate gates and outputs, and replays candidates on training and held-out scenarios before promotion.
Benchmark and integration
examples/self-improving-refunds/benchmark.ts, raw-loop.ts, index.ts, examples/*, demo/src/lib/__snapshots__/*
The benchmark compares raw-loop, model, judge, and playbook arms. Tests cover refund-desk flows, playbook promotion, and benchmark results.

Bind approval to the order and amount.

If a customer has two above-threshold orders, the desk can approve the first order, load the second, and offer ISSUE_REFUND for the second without another approval. Mark events without schemas as unexpanded.

If a plain machine guards ISSUE with event.amount > 0 but has no ISSUE schema, this code tries only { type: "ISSUE" } and marks the type complete. getAcceptedEvents lists the type without evaluating its guard. canReach(machine, "issued") can therefore return reachable: false, complete: true, although { type: "ISSUE", amount: 1 } reaches the target. Treat the missing schema as incomplete unless the caller supplies the event payload domain. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The later depth check then records max-depth instead of trying GO, even when GO reaches a final state in one event. Keep the error child at depth + 1, but let the alternative success branch use the original depth.

…, approval bound to order and amount, no-schema events unexpanded, decision-model retry feedback, attempts copied, ambiguous choice labels, skill reference config verified by a test

The five out-of-diff findings from the latest CodeRabbit review are fixed in 4672646:

  • Approval bound to order and amount. The desk stores approval: { orderId, amount }, and the guards, the checkingIssue monitor and the payout input all require a match. The adversarial proof now gives every customer two orders over the threshold. A broken copy that ignores the order is caught by canReach.
  • No-schema events. A type with no schema is listed in unexpandedEvents, which makes the proof incomplete, when one of its active transitions is a function, has a guard, or maps context. An unguarded object transition stays complete.
  • getDecisionAttempts. It now reads attempts only from errors that keep code: "decision-exhausted". Other actor errors are ignored.
  • Repeated choice labels. eventFromInteraction throws when a label matches more than one choice, and asks for an index.
  • Depth on the error branch. Only the error child of a decision's errors fork spends a level. The success branch keeps its depth.
