Two examples of the environment and policy pattern.

Code review loop (examples/code-review-loop)

  • Environment, the fixed machine. It generates a patch, then runs a self-check and an independent review in parallel, then runs checks.
    • It ships, retries, or asks a person.
    • It ships only when the checks pass and the reviewer approves, or when a person approves.
    • Rounds are capped. An issue the reviewer marks as novel can't be retried.
    • canReach proves the ship sentinel is unreachable (complete: true), and a broken copy of the guard is caught.
  • Policy. A JSON triage policy chooses between retrying and escalating, as a closed choice. v1 escalates contradictory specs on round 1 instead of waiting for the cap.
  • Traces. A JSONL file event log store, checked against the conformance suite.
  • Objective. It scores hidden tests. Correctly escalating a novel task is never penalized.
  • Claude Code host. Every request runs through claude -p --output-format json.
    • run.ts runs tasks and prints a scorecard.
    • run.ts --improve runs one improvement round.
    • The README shows the explicit improve step with the improve-machine skill.

Tic-tac-toe (examples/tic-tac-toe)

  • Environment. A plain XState game with no agent code. A person can play either side through payload choices.
  • Agent. It plays O at the game's boundary through decideNext, with one option per empty cell. Opponents are random, greedy, and perfect (minimax).
  • Policy. A JSON rule ladder over low-level board features, gated by verifyAgentConfig, a feature allow-list, and an objective that counts losing lines first.
  • Proof. canReach(ticTacToeMachine, "xWins") runs with every X move as a payload and O's move taken from the policy.
    • v0 is refuted with a 5-move witness.
    • The climbed policy is proven never to lose, with complete: true, in about 40ms.

Climb with a mocked proposer:

Round Proposed Losing lines Result
1 + win 429 → 329 promoted
2 + block 329 → 67 promoted
3 full ladder 67 → 0 promoted, proven
4 same 0 kept, stop

Library fixes

#161 merged before these follow-up fixes reached it, so they ship here.

  • Refused waits. A wait where the guards refuse every offered event now records an idle terminal, and the search is incomplete. An empty proof used to look complete.
  • Skipped types. An explorer payloads entry of [] for a type the wait accepts lists that type in unexpandedEvents.
  • Resuming from the log. Each entry's state hash now comes from replay's fold instead of the live snapshot. Runs with parallel invokes now resume from the log alone. This bug already existed on next, and it is covered by regression tests in src/run-agent.test.ts.
  • Thread paging. The refund improver pages through listThreads.

Verification

  • pnpm run check passes.
  • pnpm vitest run src examples runs 1,531 tests, all passing.
  • The demo tests pass, with two new behavior snapshots.
  • pnpm docs:check passes.

Real run: one Claude Code run of the clamp task shipped on round 1 and passed the hidden tests: 3 CLI calls, $0.07, 20 seconds.

Devin Review

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added examples of an AI-assisted code-review workflow with retries, escalation to human review, and policy improvement.
    • Added a Tic-Tac-Toe example with policy improvement, match evaluation, and checks for strategies that never lose.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Payload exploration now records idle states when all offered events are rejected and marks the search incomplete.
    • Exploration also marks accepted event types as unexpanded when their payload list is empty.
  • Documentation
    • Added guides and example links for both workflows, including clarification of incomplete search results.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request updates payload-exploration results for skipped event branches. It adds code-review-loop and Tic-Tac-Toe examples with state machines, policies, evaluation and improvement workflows, and command-line entry points. It also updates example documentation and tests, and paginates training-trace lookup in the refunds example.

Changes: Payload exploration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Report skipped payload branches
src/verify.ts, src/verify-payloads.test.ts, docs/verify.md, .changeset/explore-decision-exhaustion.md, demo/src/lib/example-behavior.test.ts
Exploration marks event types unexpanded when an empty payload list skips branches or guards refuse all offered events. For all-refused waits, it records an idle terminal. The demo reply helper now tries the first idle payload choice before synthesizing a payload.

Code-review loop example

Layer / File(s) Summary
Review, retry, and human-decision flow
examples/code-review-loop/environment.ts, examples/code-review-loop/environment.test.ts
The machine defines patch generation, self-check, review, visible checks, triage, human decisions, and shipping outcomes. Tests cover retry constraints, escalation, round limits, and reachable states.
Triage policies
examples/code-review-loop/policy.ts, examples/code-review-loop/policies/*, examples/code-review-loop/policy.test.ts
The policy interface maps machine facts and offered events to RETRY or ESCALATE decisions. The v0 and v1 policy configurations and tests exercise those decisions.
Tasks, checks, and episode execution
examples/code-review-loop/tasks.ts, examples/code-review-loop/tasks.test.ts, examples/code-review-loop/checks.ts, examples/code-review-loop/checks.test.ts, examples/code-review-loop/fixtures/*, examples/code-review-loop/bench.ts, examples/code-review-loop/bench.test.ts, examples/code-review-loop/test-doubles.ts
The task loader reads fixture-based tasks and assigns train and held-out splits. The Node runner executes visible or hidden suites. Episode execution records outcomes, resumes human-review waits, and scores results.
Executors, event logs, and policy improvement
examples/code-review-loop/claude-code.ts, examples/code-review-loop/claude-code.test.ts, examples/code-review-loop/file-store.ts, examples/code-review-loop/file-store.test.ts, examples/code-review-loop/improve.ts, examples/code-review-loop/improve.test.ts
The Claude Code adapter supplies text, classification, and closed-choice executors. The JSONL store persists event logs. Policy improvement validates and replays candidates before promotion.
Runner and example integration
examples/code-review-loop/index.ts, examples/code-review-loop/run.ts, examples/code-review-loop/run.test.ts, examples/code-review-loop/terminal-reviewer.ts, examples/code-review-loop/terminal-reviewer.test.ts, examples/code-review-loop/README.md, examples/code-review-loop/metadata.json, examples/code-review-loop/.gitignore, examples/index.ts, examples/README.md, examples/suspension.test.ts, demo/src/lib/__snapshots__/example-behavior/code-review-loop.json, docs/environment-and-policy.md, .changeset/review-loop-tic-tac-toe-examples.md
The example adds programmatic and CLI runners, terminal review, exports, metadata, and documentation. The demo snapshot records three episodes that escalate to human review and then ship after approval.

Tic-Tac-Toe example

Layer / File(s) Summary
Game machine and board features
examples/tic-tac-toe/game.ts, examples/tic-tac-toe/game.test.ts, examples/tic-tac-toe/features.ts, examples/tic-tac-toe/opponents.ts
The game validates moves, switches turns, and ends on a win or draw. Feature extraction and random, greedy, and perfect opponents support policy evaluation.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not treat an empty payload list as a complete search.

If payloads returns { PLAY: [] } at a wait where PLAY has a legal payload, variantsOf produces no branch events. This return records idle without marking PLAY unexpanded. canReach can therefore report reachable: false, complete: true for a reachable target. Record incomplete coverage when an offered event type has an empty payload list; keep a wait with no offered event types distinct.

The out-of-diff src/verify.ts finding is fixed in #161 (18da39f) and merged here. An explorer payloads entry of [] for a type a wait accepts now lists that type in unexpandedEvents, so canReach reports complete: false.
