v3.5.0 "Chorus"

The creator-tools release. The full user-facing account is .github/release-notes/v3.5.0.md (which Auto Release publishes) and the [3.5.0] CHANGELOG section; this body is the reviewer's map.

Breaking

  • .rnm movies are format 7 (every non-controller input recorded); format 6 is refused with the reason. .rnmproj version 2.
  • Emulation epoch 6, for the MMC5 scanline IRQ fix: epoch-5 movies and netplay peers are refused; MMC5 save states from v3.4.x are refused.
  • rustynes-core: FrameInput::apply_to / held_on are no longer const fn; FrameInput gains extra. Additive Mapper::snoops_ppu_reads / notify_ppu_read and PpuBus::notify_ppu_read, defaulted.

What landed (34 commits, by area)

  • Movies: 09dab23d format 7; mobile disk-swap and coin refusals 8e8b5595.
  • Lua: d279e0b0 WebSockets and OS shared memory; 3a70a4cf refuses shared-memory objects another user could squat.
  • MCP: 8f83856a rustynes-mcp (ADR 0048).
  • Speedrun / dumps: 141f5863 master-clock auto-timing and the memory-export block (ADR 0047); 4f347f61 rustynes dump-check; 4e9b6e96 escapes control characters from DAT/database strings.
  • Desktop / web: A/V sync offset, Multi-Disk bundles, rebindable device keys, emu-thread priority on Windows/macOS, browser drag-and-drop, Vs. DualSystem in the canvas embed, the RA proxy base read at init.
  • Core: dd08b212 the MMC5 detects scanlines from PPU reads as the NESdev page describes; 45b7e406 coverage baselines; 08aad734 one HostWarning definition.
  • Hosted: d5c4af40 TURN back on (deploy after merge, then the live gates); e87fa09e empty credentials refused; 0c8adb62 one relay-URL validator.
  • Provenance: 4c1fde15 the Power Pad serial layout recorded as derived from Mesen2 (header, section 1 row, NOTICE). No code change.
  • Release: e9433727 the bump, anchors and notes.

Verification (local, on e9433727's tree)

  • cargo test --workspace --features test-roms,commercial-roms --no-fail-fast: 3,920 passed, 0 failed, 19 ignored (the first run's one failure, release_anchor_audit, was a ROADMAP sentence fixed in the cut and re-run 18/0); commercial suites 60/0, 169/0, 6/0.
  • fmt; clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings plus scripting, scripting,hd-pack, retroachievements, full, both wasm32 builds and rustynes-cosim; rustdoc -D warnings; thumbv7em no_std; markdownlint. All clean.
  • pre-release.sh: nothing definitively wrong.

Not done in this PR, on purpose

  • The release notes' MiSTer pin and bitstream lines are TODO: the sibling pins to this PR's merge commit, re-verifies the goldens and compiles the bitstreams after it merges. The published release body is edited then.
  • The hosted Worker is not deployed by this PR; TURN goes live at the deploy after merge.

Note

Medium Risk
Breaking movie/project formats and emulation epoch 6 change replay and netplay compatibility; the MMC5 IRQ retiming alters timing-sensitive games, though the release documents extensive test gates.

Overview
v3.5.0 "Chorus" ships creator tooling and several compatibility breaks: .rnm format 7 records the full input stream (expansion devices, mic, Vs. coins/service, FDS disk swaps, Datach scans), .rnmproj v2, and rustynes verify v3. Emulation epoch 6 comes from retiming the MMC5 scanline IRQ to follow NESdev PPU-read detection (Mapper::snoops_ppu_reads / notify_ppu_read on the bus and PPU path), which invalidates epoch-5 movies/netplay peers and v3.4.x MMC5 save states.

New surface area includes rustynes-mcp (stdio MCP over the headless core), speedrun timing with optional --memif, rustynes dump-check, Lua WebSockets and real OS shared memory (script-ipc), desktop A/V sync offset, .rnbundle multicart/multidisk, rebindable device keys, browser drag-and-drop and Vs. DualSystem in the lightweight embed, and hosted TURN turned back on (privacy policy updated). HostWarning moves into rustynes-core for one definition across frontends.

Fixes and policy: RetroAchievements addressing is now CPU-bus identity (was wrong for cartridge RAM on native/mobile); browser file reads no longer retain buffers; coins and disk swaps are refused during netplay/playback (mobile shows toasts; relay URLs use npValidateRelayUrl); Vs. coin recording/history timeline and TURN empty-credential sanitization; FrameInput::extra and non-const apply_to/held_on. Workspace version 3.5.0, rustynes-mcp in the workspace, and release notes/CHANGELOG/README anchors updated.

…N-SANITIZE)

sanitizeIceServers accepted a `turn:` / `turns:` entry whenever its
`username` and `credential` were both of type string, and the empty string
is a string. Such an entry was returned to the client as a usable relay
credential, and every client would have failed only at Allocate time
(Antigravity on #618, v3.4.1). It also returned a STUN-only list as a 200,
which spends a credential admission on an answer that gives a client
nothing its own STUN default does not.

Now:

- a TURN entry whose username or credential is missing, not a string, or
  empty is dropped (as a credential-less TURN entry already was);
- the function returns `undefined` unless at least one TURN URL survives,
  so handleTurn's existing path refunds the admission (refundTurn) and
  answers 502 `turn-upstream`, which every client maps to "STUN only".
  No new code path in handleTurn: the refund and the 502 are the ones a
  network error already takes.

Gate (services/hosted, vitest):

- five new `... is a 502 and does not spend the budget` cases through the
  real router: empty username and empty credential on `turn:` and on
  `turns:`, and a STUN-only answer. Each asserts the 502, the
  `turn-upstream` code, an unchanged `minted` count (the refund) and, new
  for all eleven cases, that no `revoke:` entry was scheduled;
- a unit case refusing every (empty, non-empty) combination for both
  schemes, and keeping a good entry beside a dropped one;
- a unit case that a STUN-only list is nothing usable. The existing
  single-string-urls case now carries a TURN entry.

Red first: the 7 new tests failed against the old code (7 failed / 28
passed in turn.test.ts). After: turn.test.ts 35/35; whole suite 130/130
(123 before + 7); `tsc --noEmit` clean.

Mutations (each a value change, each restored and diffed):

- allow an empty username: 3 tests fail (both schemes' 502 + unit);
- allow an empty credential: 3 fail;
- accept a STUN-only list again: 6 fail;
- remove the refundTurn before the 502: all 11 `... is a 502` fail.

All caught. Not done: nothing here re-enables TURN (it stays off in
production, T-HOSTED-TURN-EXPIRY, which needs the maintainer's
credentials); nothing was deployed. A whitespace-only username is still
accepted; only the empty string is refused, as the ticket states.

Noted, not mine: on the first full run `lobby.test.ts` "closes a socket
that floods messages" timed out at load average 31 (nine agents on the
host); it passes alone (13/13) and in the later full run.

…PROXY-LAZY)

ra_glue.js exported `RA_PROXY_BASE = resolveProxyBase()`, a module-level
constant evaluated once when the module graph is instantiated, while the
rcheevos module location (rcheevosBase()) is read at loadModule(). A page
that set `<meta name="rustynes-ra-proxy-base">` or
`globalThis.RUSTYNES_RA_PROXY_BASE` after the glue was imported therefore
got a working rcheevos module and a proxy that failed closed on every call
(Antigravity on #618, v3.4.1).

Now `_proxyBase` is module state, "" until ra_init() resolves it. ra_init()
resolves it FIRST, before the module load can fail, because the Rust
bridge (wasm_cheevos.rs BrowserRaSession::init) reads ra_proxy_configured()
right after ra_init() whatever it returned. It is resolved only when no
session is live (`_client === 0`): a mid-session change would send one
session's calls to two proxies. ra_shutdown() already zeroes `_client`, so
the next ra_init() reads the page again. The server-call trampoline and
ra_proxy_configured() read `_proxyBase`; `raProxyBase()` replaces the
exported constant for the test. No Rust change: the bridge imports only the
functions, never the constant.

Gate (services/hosted/test/ra-glue.test.ts, vitest in workerd):

- "honours a base set after the module was imported": base set after the
  import, not visible before ra_init(), visible after it (ra_init itself
  returns false: the runtime has no rcheevos.wasm);
- "re-resolves after a shutdown, and refuses a bad base set late";
- the repository default case now also asserts ra_init leaves it "".

Red first: 3 failed (raProxyBase missing). After: ra-glue 9/9, hosted suite
132/132, tsc clean, `node --check` on the glue clean.

Mutations (values, each restored and diffed):

- M1 resolve at import again (the v3.4.2 behaviour): 2 fail. CAUGHT.
- M2 resolve after the module load instead of before: 2 fail. CAUGHT.
- M3 ra_proxy_configured re-reads the page instead of the session base:
  1 fails. CAUGHT.
- M4 drop the live-session guard (always re-resolve): 9/9 pass. NOT
  CAUGHT, stimulus blind: the Workers runtime cannot load rcheevos.wasm, so
  a live session (`_client != 0`) never exists in the test. Recorded in
  docs/cheevos-browser.md as the one rule the test does not pin; only a
  real-browser run with the Emscripten module can exercise it.

Browser RA stays held (D31); nothing was built with `browser-cheevos` or
deployed. Docs: web/cheevos/README.md step 4, docs/cheevos-browser.md
("Where the proxy base comes from"), CHANGELOG [Unreleased] Fixed. ADR 0015's
mention of RA_PROXY_BASE is left as written (an ADR is not rewritten).

…(FE-08)

The emulation thread's best-effort elevation was Linux-only (SCHED_RR ->
nice -> PR_SET_TIMERSLACK); Windows and macOS ran a documented no-op that
named these two calls as the follow-up.

Windows: SetThreadPriority(GetCurrentThread(),
THREAD_PRIORITY_ABOVE_NORMAL = 1). One step above the process class's
normal level; no privilege is needed to raise one's own thread within the
class, and the level stays below the MMCSS "Pro Audio" thread WASAPI
uses, so the end-of-frame spin can never starve audio. TIME_CRITICAL and
REALTIME_PRIORITY_CLASS are deliberately not used. The two kernel32
functions are declared in a local `unsafe extern "system"` block rather
than through windows-sys, so no dependency is added for two symbols whose
signatures have not changed since NT 3.1 (GetCurrentThread returns a
pseudo-handle that needs no CloseHandle; SetThreadPriority returns a
nonzero BOOL on success).

macOS: pthread_set_qos_class_self_np(QOS_CLASS_USER_INTERACTIVE, 0) via
libc (already a direct optional dependency behind `emu-thread`). This is
the class Apple documents for frame production the user is watching; it
raises scheduling priority and keeps the thread off the efficiency cores,
without the Mach time-constraint policy Core Audio's own thread uses.

Both act on the calling thread only, report their outcome once on stderr
as the Linux variant does, and leave the thread at the default on
failure. Each unsafe block carries a SAFETY comment (the workspace's
undocumented_unsafe_blocks lint).

Verification. No test can observe an OS scheduler class, and the full
frontend cannot be cross-compiled here (ring's C build needs a mingw
toolchain; Core Audio bindings need the macOS SDK). So the functions were
copied verbatim into a scratch crate with the workspace's lint set
(pedantic, nursery, unsafe_code, undocumented_unsafe_blocks) and
`cargo +1.99.1 clippy -- -D warnings` run for x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu,
x86_64-pc-windows-gnu and aarch64-apple-darwin: clean on all three. Two
value mutants prove each branch is compiled only where it belongs:
THREAD_PRIORITY_ABOVE_NORMAL retyped to u8 fails Windows (E0308) and
passes Linux; the QoS relative priority given as 0u8 fails
aarch64-apple-darwin (E0308) and passes Linux. Linux: default-feature
clippy -D warnings clean, the 11 emu_thread tests pass. CI's Windows and
macOS jobs compile the real crate. Still manual: run the app on each OS
and read the stderr line (raised / refused).

Docs: docs/frontend.md (the emu-thread bullet), the Cargo.toml libc
comment, CHANGELOG [Unreleased].

Maintainer decision of 2026-10-20, on the stricter expiry test of
2026-10-21 (throwaway TURN key, maintainer-authorised; log in the gitignored
salvaged/evidence/v3.5.0-turn/turn-expiry-test-2026-10-21.md). Lands after
T-HOSTED-TURN-SANITIZE (e87fa09) so the relay does not come back with an
empty-credential entry still passed through.

What was measured (two relay-only RTCPeerConnections, a checksummed
payload over a data channel, usage from callsTurnUsageAdaptiveGroups):

- expired (19 s, 14 min 46 s, 25 min past expiry) and revoked (79 s after
  a 204 revoke) credentials each relayed 5,242,880 B relay-to-relay with
  matching checksums, and each held a connection 924 s (28/28 pings),
  past the 10-minute allocation lifetime;
- no usage row at all for the expired or revoked credentials' traffic:
  billing stops at expiry and at revocation;
- the control credential relayed 5 s, 67 s and 8 min after its key was
  DELETED, and its in-TTL traffic was billed (15,976,704 B egress in that
  minute): key deletion is not a kill switch.

So exposure is credentials within their TTL, bounded by TURN_DAILY_CAP,
TURN_PER_IP_PER_HOUR and the Worker's revoke-at-TTL (budget.ts).

Changes:

- wrangler.jsonc: TURN_ENABLED "true", comment rewritten with the reason.
- services/hosted/README.md: "TURN is off (v3.4.1)" becomes "TURN is on
  again (v3.5.0)" with the measured table; the spend-guard rows, the
  revocation paragraph, "What the guards do not bound", the backstop step,
  live-gate step 4 (now expected to fail on relaying and checked on
  billing instead) and the rollback section corrected. The rollback section
  used to say deleting the TURN key makes "every credential minted from it
  stop working": measured false, now says so.
- PRIVACY.md: the "relay is switched off, nothing is kept" sentence now
  says it is on again from v3.5.0 and everything described is kept while on;
  the effective line moves to v3.5.0 (the practice changed).
- to-dos/ROADMAP.md: T-HOSTED-TURN-EXPIRY DONE v3.5.0 with the figures in
  the row itself (the evidence file is gitignored). Still open, not gating:
  telling Cloudflare, an optional usage circuit breaker.
- CHANGELOG [Unreleased] Changed: "The hosted TURN relay is on again".

Not changed, deliberately: the README / docs/STATUS / ROADMAP / SUPPORT /
VERSION-PLAN current-release lines describe v3.4.1/v3.4.2 as released
("TURN relay deployed but held off"), which stays true of those releases.

Checks: no test or audit pins the deployed TURN_ENABLED value (searched
crates/*/tests, scripts, .github/workflows; release_anchor_audit reads
wrangler.jsonc only for RA_USER_AGENT); vitest binds "true" already.
hosted vitest 132/132, tsc clean; release_anchor_audit 18/18,
release_state_prose_audit 9/9; scripts/render_privacy.py renders
(11,671 B); markdownlint (pre-commit pin) passed on the four files.
Nothing deployed: the coordinator deploys after merge and re-runs the
live gates.

The codec half of the A/V dump-options depth shipped in v1.8.9; the sync
half did not: AvRecordOptions had no sync field. This adds one.

Settings -> Recording -> "A/V sync offset", -1000..=1000 ms, persisted as
recording.audio_offset_ms (#[serde(default)] = 0, so a pre-v3.5.0
[recording] table loads unchanged). It is applied once, at the stop-time
mux, to the .mp4/.mkv audio track, by the new pure helper
audio_offset_args:

- offset > 0 (sound later): the output filter `-af adelay=<ms>`, which
  prepends that much silence to the mono track;
- offset < 0 (sound earlier): the input option `-ss <s.mmm>` placed
  between the audio input's format options and its `-i` (before the
  video `-i` it would seek the video instead), dropping the first |ms|
  of audio; the input is raw f32le, so the seek is sample-exact;
- 0: no argument at all, so the default mux is byte-identical to before.

The capture is not corrected (each frame's audio is already the audio the
core produced for that frame); the offset is for latency added on the
playback side. GIF (no audio) and WAV (no video) ignore it. The value is
clamped to +/-MAX_AUDIO_OFFSET_MS (1000) by
AvRecordOptions::with_audio_offset_ms and again when the arguments are
built, so a hand-edited config cannot trim a recording's audio away.
AvParams::new now builds the parameters from the parsed options, which
keeps handle_av_record_toggle under clippy's too_many_lines bound.

Tests (av-record feature; 735 passed / 0 failed / 1 ignored in the
frontend lib, was 730 before this item, +5):
- a_zero_sync_offset_leaves_the_mux_arguments_unchanged pins the whole
  33-element default vector;
- the_sync_offset_places_its_arguments_on_the_audio_stream checks the
  filter is an output option, the seek sits immediately before the audio
  -i, and both clamps;
- the_sync_offset_does_not_touch_gif_or_wav;
- the_sync_offset_moves_the_audio_in_a_real_encode encodes a click at
  0.5 s through the real ffmpeg at offsets 0 / +120 / -120 ms, decodes the
  track back, and requires the click to move by the offset within 3 ms
  (comparing with the 0 encode cancels AAC's encoder delay). Measured
  here, ffmpeg n9.0.2: 500.40 / 620.27 / 380.27 ms. It returns early,
  saying so, where ffmpeg is absent (CI's images; av-record tests are
  linted but not run in CI, a known gap);
- config: a_recording_table_without_a_sync_offset_loads_with_none, plus a
  save/load round trip of -85.

Mutations, 7 of 7 caught: -ss given in ms instead of seconds (2 tests);
adelay value doubled (2); the positive/negative branches swapped (2);
MAX_AUDIO_OFFSET_MS 1000 -> 2000 (1); the seek moved onto the video
input (2); a zero offset emitting adelay=0 (1); the serde default
removed (1).

Gates: fmt; clippy -D warnings default, av-record, full; rustdoc
-D warnings with av-record. Manual: play a recording made with a
non-zero offset and judge the sync by eye and ear.

Docs: docs/frontend.md (A/V recording section), CHANGELOG [Unreleased],
EN/ES strings for the slider.

…-MOBILE-RELAY-VALIDATE)

Android checked a custom signaling URL with a regex, iOS with
`URL(string:)` plus a host test, and the connect path parsed it a third
way (tungstenite's client request builder over the `http` URI grammar).
The three disagreed (Antigravity on #618, v3.4.1).

Probing the connect parser found a worse defect than the ticket's: for
`wss://h:notaport`, `wss://h:9000x`, `wss://h:99999`, `wss://h:65536`,
`wss://h:` and `wss://[::1]x`, `http::Uri::port()` returns None ("no
port"), and connect_bounded then used `port_u16().unwrap_or(443/80)`. So
those URLs were neither refused nor honoured: the client dialled the
scheme's default port on the named host. Android's regex accepted all of
them, plus an unclosed IPv6 literal and an upper-case `WSS://` that the
connect refuses.

Now:

- rustynes-netplay signaling_client: `parse_signaling_url(url) ->
  Result<SignalingTarget{host, port, tls}, String>` and
  `validate_signaling_url(url)`, ONE parser, which connect_bounded now
  calls (it no longer derives host/port itself). On top of the http
  grammar it refuses an empty host and reads the port text from the
  authority itself (after the last '@'; after `]` for an IPv6 literal):
  ASCII digits naming 1..=65535, else refused; junk after `]` refused.
  Not judged, documented: DNS validity of the host, scheme case (the
  grammar refuses upper case, so now everyone does).
- rustynes-mobile: `#[uniffi::export] np_validate_relay_url(url) -> bool`
  over that function. Generated bindings checked here with the crate's
  uniffi-bindgen: Kotlin `npValidateRelayUrl(url: String): Boolean`,
  Swift `npValidateRelayUrl(url: String) -> Bool`.
- Android Netplay.kt onlineNetplayConfigured: `return
  npValidateRelayUrl(url)`; the RELAY_URL regex is deleted.
- iOS NetplayModel.swift signalingConfigured: `return
  npValidateRelayUrl(url: u)`; the URL(string:) host test is deleted.
  Both still trim first and still send an empty URL to npHostedAvailable.

Gate: one table, crates/rustynes-netplay/testdata/relay_urls.tsv, 40 rows
(13 accept, 27 refuse; each with its reason):

- netplay: `the_relay_url_table_matches_the_parser` (every row through
  validate_signaling_url; asserts >=10 accept and >=20 refuse rows so an
  emptied table cannot pass); `the_parser_reports_the_port_and_host...`;
  `connect_refuses_a_bad_port_without_dialling` (SignalingClient::connect
  on ws://127.0.0.1:notaport closes with "invalid port" instead of dialling
  port 80).
- mobile: `the_exported_relay_validator_matches_the_shared_table` (the
  same rows through np_validate_relay_url) and
  `the_shells_ask_the_bridge_and_parse_nothing_themselves`, a SOURCE check
  of Netplay.kt and NetplayModel.swift (each gate returns the bridge's
  verdict, contains no Regex/.matches/URL(string, and RELAY_URL is gone).

Mutations (values; each restored and cmp-checked):
N1 ignore the port text: 3 netplay tests fail. N2 allow port 0: 1 fails.
N3 allow an empty host: 1 fails. N4 allow a signed port (+80): 1 fails.
N5 allow junk after `]`: 1 fails. N6 export returns !url.is_empty(): the
mobile table test fails. N7 Android back to a regex: the source check
fails. N8 iOS back to URL(string:): the source check fails. All caught.
A `len <= 5` clause on the port digits was removed rather than left
unpinned (u16 parsing already bounds the value).

Gates: cargo fmt --all --check clean; clippy -D warnings clean for
rustynes-netplay (default and netplay-client, all targets) and
rustynes-mobile (all targets); rustdoc -D warnings clean for both;
rustynes-netplay --features netplay-client 190 passed / 0 failed / 3
ignored; rustynes-mobile 68 / 0 / 0.

NOT VERIFIED HERE, stated plainly: the Kotlin and Swift edits were not
compiled (no kotlinc, no swiftc, no Android SDK or Xcode on this host).
The function names and signatures they call were checked against
bindings generated from this build, and the source check pins the call
sites, but the first compile of each app is the coordinator's/CI's.

[Unreleased] Fixed.

Until now `comm.ws_open` answered `open = false` at once and the
memory-mapped file was a HashMap inside the emulator, so neither did the
one thing the API exists for: talking to another process. Both are real
now. The Lua side is untouched (the `comm` table, the per-request 1 MiB
and per-frame 16 MiB bounds, the instruction budget of ADR 0012), which
is the "no change to the Lua budget model" half of the v3.5.0 row 2 gate;
everything below lives in the host (`script_host.rs`) and a new
platform layer (`shm.rs`).

CR-01, the WebSocket client (`tungstenite` 0.30, the crate and features
netplay's signaling client already pulls, so the lock file gains two
dependency edges and no package):

- The host dials TCP itself, to an address checked under the SEC-04 rule
  (every resolved address public unless the host is in
  RUSTYNES_COMM_HTTP_ALLOW), then hands the connected stream to
  `client_tls_with_config`. `tungstenite::connect` would resolve the name
  a second time out of the check's sight (DNS rebinding). The allowlist
  matcher was split into `host_port_allowlisted` so HTTP and WebSocket
  apply one rule. Only ws:// and wss:// are accepted; wss verifies with
  the webpki roots.
- One socket at a time (ws_send/ws_close name none); a second ws_open
  closes the first. Each socket runs on its own thread with a 20 ms read
  timeout interleaving its outbound queue, so a 10 s handshake never
  stalls the HTTP queue. Events: open=true on handshake, one message
  event per inbound message (binary delivered lossily as text), exactly
  one open=false however the socket ends.
- Bounds: 1 MiB per inbound message/frame (larger closes the socket);
  while 4 MiB of inbound text is undrained (`ws_pending`, decremented in
  `drain_results`) the socket is not read, so a flood is held back by
  TCP instead of this process's memory.

CR-02, shared memory (platform APIs behind `// SAFETY:` notes; `libc` on
POSIX, `windows-sys` 0.61 on Windows, both already in the lock file;
`shared_memory` and `memmap2` considered and not taken, ADR 0016
amendment):

- `shm::SharedRegion`: POSIX shm_open/ftruncate/mmap (creator unlinks on
  drop, O_EXCL so a region someone else made is never unlinked by us,
  mode 0600) and Windows CreateFileMappingW/MapViewOfFile in the Local\
  namespace. Names are 1-30 chars of [A-Za-z0-9_.-], macOS's PSHMNAMLEN
  limit; no separator can make a name a path. Every copy is volatile and
  the sequence counter is an AtomicU32 over the mapping.
- Script names get the prefix `rnes-mmf-`, so a script can only open
  RustyNES's regions, never another program's (shared memory is a
  per-user namespace browsers, sound servers and Python share).
- Each region: a 32-byte header (magic RNMF, version 1, capacity,
  length, sequence counter) then the payload, published as a seqlock so
  a reader in another process can tell a torn copy from a whole one. A
  larger write replaces the region and clears the old one's magic (a
  reader's signal to reopen). The NF-03 budget (16 MiB, 256 names) now
  counts mapped bytes. Regions a script wrote are removed when the host
  stops; regions made by another program are opened per read and never
  removed.

Verified:
- `cargo test -p rustynes-frontend --features scripting,script-ipc --lib
  -- script_host:: shm::`: 28 passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored (the ignored
  one is the child half of the cross-process test, run BY that test).
  New: an echo-server round trip (open, two sends, ordered echoes,
  close), a server close, SEC-04 refusal of a loopback ws:// with no
  connection made, the flood budget, a script write read by name from
  another mapping through the documented layout, an outside write read
  by the script, region growth, name rules, the store budget, a stalled
  writer's copy refused, and in shm.rs a second PROCESS (the test binary
  re-run as a child) reading and writing the region by name.
- Mutations (value mutants, each rebuilt): inbound-budget comparison x16,
  SEC-04 address filter disabled, MMF length offset 12->20, prefix
  bypassed, drain decrement 0, message altered, writer leaving the
  counter odd, shm write corrupting a bit: all CAUGHT. The reader's
  odd-counter check (`s1 & 1 == 1` -> `== 2`) came back NOT CAUGHT
  (stimulus blind: two live threads almost never land a copy wholly
  inside one write); `a_read_never_returns_a_copy_taken_mid_write` was
  added and now CATCHES it.
- `cargo clippy -p rustynes-frontend --all-targets --features
  scripting,script-ipc -D warnings` and `--features memif`: clean.
  `shm.rs` also clippy-clean (pedantic + nursery + undocumented_unsafe)
  in a scratch crate for x86_64-pc-windows-msvc and aarch64-apple-darwin.

Not verified: the Windows and macOS code was compiled and linted, never
run (no such host here). wss:// against a real TLS server was not
exercised by a test (the handshake path is tungstenite's, shared with
netplay). The `memif` feature is defined here because `shm.rs` is gated
on it; its publisher lands in the next commit.

… (FE-05)

winit's web backend delivers no WindowEvent::DroppedFile, so the desktop's
drop handler never ran in a browser (app.rs said "file drops are a
follow-up") and a file dragged onto the page was opened by the browser
itself. Both browser builds now register DOM `dragover` / `drop`
listeners on the document and cancel the default for each.

Routing is one pure function, drop_route::classify(name, len), compiled
on every target so native tests pin the rule the browser runs:
- .nes / .fds / .unf / .unif (case-insensitive) -> a ROM;
- .rnm -> a movie;
- .rom / .bin of exactly 8 KiB -> the FDS BIOS (the size is part of the
  rule: .bin is generic, and only 8 KiB can be disksys.rom);
- anything else -> refused, logged by name.
The ROM list is narrower than File -> Open on purpose: the browser load
path extracts no .zip and plays no .nsf. The desktop's DroppedFile
handler now reads its list from the same drop_route::is_rom_name, so the
two cannot drift; its behaviour is unchanged (same four extensions, a
dotfile such as ".nes" still has no extension).

wasm-winit (wasm_winit::install_drop_loader) delivers through the same
AppEvent the matching picker sends (RomLoaded / MovieLoaded /
FdsBiosLoaded), starting Web Audio for a ROM because the drop is a user
gesture. The canvas embed (wasm::install_drop_loader) takes ROMs and
movies; its picker's onload body moved into load_rom_bytes so the picker
and the drop share it (a pure move, no change), and it refuses a BIOS
with a note (the embed has no FDS).

Tests: drop_route, 4 tests (frontend lib 723 passed default features at
this commit's base + 4). Mutations, 6 of 6 caught: "unif" dropped from
the ROM list; FDS_BIOS_LEN 0x2000 -> 0x2001; the size guard removed from
the BIOS rule; the extension no longer lower-cased; the empty-stem
(dotfile) guard removed; .rnm routed as a ROM.

Browser check (the DOM half no unit test can reach): the wasm-winit debug
build from `trunk build`, served on 127.0.0.1, driven in headless
Chromium over the DevTools protocol with synthetic DragEvents carrying a
real File. notes.txt -> "dropped file ignored"; an 8 KiB disksys.rom ->
"FDS BIOS accepted (8192 bytes)" from the app; a 24,592-byte synthetic
NROM -> read and delivered, "Web Audio armed (AudioWorklet)"; both events
defaultPrevented. Not checked: a real mouse drag, the .rnm route, the
canvas embed in a browser.

Gates: fmt; clippy -D warnings native default, and both wasm32
invocations (wasm-winit; --no-default-features --features wasm-canvas).

…ed re-run

The evidence file (gitignored salvaged/evidence/v3.5.0-turn/
turn-expiry-test-2026-10-21.md) was corrected at 01:15Z after d5c4af4
was written from its first draft. Two changes, both carried into
services/hosted/README.md and the T-HOSTED-TURN-EXPIRY row of
to-dos/ROADMAP.md:

1. Key deletion stops billing within minutes, not never. The in-TTL
   control credential's runs 5 s and 67 s after the key was deleted were
   billed (15,976,704 B egress); its run 8 min after has no usage row. It
   never stops relaying. d5c4af4 said a deleted key's in-TTL credentials
   "keep being billed"; that sentence is gone from the "TURN is on again"
   list, the backstop step and the rollback section, each now stating the
   measured times. Revocation remains the quicker stop.
2. The controlled re-run (fresh key, fresh browser profile, no leftover
   connections) that refuted dead-credential traffic being billed to
   another credential: an expired credential's 5 MiB transfer (5,953,928 B
   sent) plus a 6-minute hold (11/11 pings) and a valid credential never
   used both have NO usage rows, while a valid positive control on the
   same key shows 12,233,180 B egress.

The decision is unchanged: TURN_ENABLED stays "true" (d5c4af4). Docs
only; markdownlint passed. Nothing deployed.

Review finding on d279e0b (coordinator, from the automated security
review): when `shm_open(O_CREAT|O_EXCL)` failed with EEXIST, `create`
reopened and ADOPTED the existing object, and `open` did the same, with
no check of its owner or mode. Shared-memory names are a namespace every
local user can create objects in (`/dev/shm` is world-writable), so
another user could pre-create `rnes-mmf-<name>` (or the memif block's
name) mode 0666 and then read what a script published, plant data a
script reads, or block the name.

Three rules now, the threat model written into `shm.rs`'s module docs,
`docs/scripting.md` and the ADR 0016 amendment:

1. Per-user OS names. POSIX objects are `/<name>.<euid hex>`; Windows
   names are `Local\<name>` (session-local). `shm::os_object_name` spells
   it for tools and docs. To keep the suffix inside macOS's 31-byte
   PSHMNAMLEN the portable name limit fell from 30 to 21, and the script
   prefix was shortened from `rnes-mmf-` to `rnmf-` so a script name can
   still be 16 characters.
2. Existing objects are checked before use, in both `open` and `create`:
   POSIX `fstat` must show our effective uid and `mode & 0o077 == 0`
   (`owner_ok`); Windows compares the mapping's owner SID
   (`GetSecurityInfo`) with the process token's user SID (`EqualSid`).
   Failure is `PermissionDenied` with the uid and mode, never adoption;
   the MMF layer turns it into a dropped write / empty read as before.
3. What we create is owner-only: POSIX `O_EXCL` + 0600 (as before);
   Windows now passes a protected DACL `D:P(A;;GA;;;OW)` instead of the
   default descriptor. `windows-sys` gains the Security_Authorization and
   System_Threading features (bindings only; no new crate).

Remaining, documented: a squatter can still make a name unusable (denial
of service, reported loudly), and anything running as the same user can
read the region, as it can that user's files.

Verified:
- `cargo test -p rustynes-frontend --features scripting,script-ipc --lib
  -- script_host:: shm::`: 30 passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored (the child half
  of the cross-process test). New: a planted mode-0666 object under our
  name is refused by `open` and by `create` with "mode 666" in the error,
  and after it is removed the normal create/open path works; the OS name
  carries the uid; `owner_ok` table (another uid, root, group-readable,
  other-writable all refused). `--features memif --lib shm::`: 9 passed.
- Mutations: `mode & 0o077` -> `& 0o000` CAUGHT; uid suffix off by one
  CAUGHT; the uid comparison disabled came back NOT CAUGHT through the OS
  path (stimulus blind: only root can plant an object owned by another
  uid), so `owner_ok` was split out and `the_owner_rule` pins it; the same
  mutant on `owner_ok` is now CAUGHT.
- clippy -D warnings clean for `scripting,script-ipc` and `memif`; the
  module also lints clean (pedantic, nursery, undocumented_unsafe_blocks)
  for x86_64-pc-windows-msvc and aarch64-apple-darwin in a scratch crate.

Not verified: the Windows owner check and DACL were compiled and linted,
never run (no Windows host); a real second user account was not used.

The desktop has run the two-console Vs. cabinet since v2.1.2 and the
wasm-winit build since v2.9.7; the lightweight canvas embed ran a
DualSystem title's main console alone with a console warning, which never
gets past the attract screen. It also had no coin key, so no Vs. game at
all could be started in it.

The DOM-free half is a new module, canvas_dual.rs, compiled for the
wasm-canvas build and for the native tests:
- build_cabinet: the same rule as every other frontend
  (app::is_dual_system); both consoles get game_db::correct_console and
  the Vs. database's palette and DIP preset (apply_vs_db_defaults, also
  applied now to the embed's single Vs. console, matching the desktop's
  resolve_vs_dip with a default [vs] config). A failed build falls back
  to the probe with the existing warning.
- CabinetFrame::step: latch P1-P4 (VsDualSystem::set_buttons: P1/P2 main,
  P3/P4 sub), run the coin countdown, run_frame, and compose both screens
  side by side through the desktop's gfx::compose_dual_into, so the pixels
  are the desktop's.
- drain_audio: the main console's samples played, the sub's drained and
  dropped (the desktop's rule; it bounds the sub's buffer).
- CoinLatch: the desktop's countdown. Note: VS_COIN_HOLD_FRAMES = 3 and
  the latch is cleared at the top of the frame on which the count reaches
  0, so a coin reads on $4016 through TWO emulated frames, on the desktop
  as here. The desktop's comment calls it a three-frame hold (~50 ms);
  the test pins the real behaviour, and the desktop is left unchanged.

wasm.rs: Emu gains `dual` (installed instead of `nes`), the cabinet
frame and a single-console coin latch; the rAF loop gets a cabinet branch
(keyboard + Gamepad API on P1, the touch overlay added to its chosen
port); set_canvas_for sizes the canvas 512x240 with an inline
aspect-ratio (the page's stylesheet fixes 512:480 and would stretch the
pair) and restores 256x240 and the page's rule for one console; F10
inserts a coin (the desktop's default key); F1/F4 save and load the
cabinet's RVSD snapshot under the ROM hash; F6-F8 and a dropped .rnm are
refused with a note (ADR 0032 scopes TAS out of dual mode).

Tests: 5 in canvas_dual (frontend lib 727 passed / 0 failed / 1
ignored, default features): the cabinet decision; frame-for-frame
snapshot equality with a hand-driven cabinet and pixel-exact composition
on three rows over 8 changing frames; port routing; the coin bit on the
main console's $4016 (read alike on both cabinets so the snapshot
comparison stays fair; the snapshot does not carry the coin latch, which
is why the first version of this test missed two mutants); the audio
drain.

Mutations, 13 run, 12 caught: ports reversed (3 - port); hold 3 -> 2;
hold 3 -> 4; the clear removed; the insert removed; the insert sent to
acceptor 2 (the sub); the sub drain removed; Stacked layout; the
is_dual_system test inverted; a doubled run_frame. NOT CAUGHT, 1:
apply_vs_db_defaults writing DIP 0 instead of the database preset;
classified stimulus-blind: no DualSystem or Vs. title the Vs. database
lists is committed (they are commercial), and the synthetic cabinet is
not in it. The same omission exists for the desktop's apply_vs_db. A
compile mutant (step called without its ports) proves the wasm-canvas
clippy compiles wasm.rs.

Browser check: the embed's debug build (trunk, --no-default-features
--features wasm-canvas) in headless Chromium over the DevTools protocol.
A dropped NROM ran at 256x240 with no inline style; the synthetic
flashing cabinet switched the canvas to 512x240 with the inline aspect
ratio and the two halves showed different, changing colours
(182,182,182 / 255,255,255 then 218,109,0 / 255,182,0); F7 logged the
refusal; a second NROM restored 256x240 and removed the style. Still
manual: a real DualSystem title coined and played, narrow layouts.

Gates: fmt; clippy -D warnings native (all targets) and both wasm32
invocations; rustdoc -D warnings.

docs/accuracy-ledger.md DualSystem row, CHANGELOG [Unreleased].

T-MOVIE-INPUT-STREAM, backlog CR-03, v3.5.0 plan item 1. Until now a
`.rnm` recorded the four controller ports and nothing else (ADR 0044
listed the rest as "Neutral"), so a Zapper, Vs. System or FDS run
replayed with the trigger never pulled, no coin and no disk swap, and
diverged on the first frame that input mattered.

Core (rustynes-core)
- New `movie_extra` module: `ExtraInput` (each port's `DeviceInput`, the
  Famicom microphone, the two Vs. coin acceptors, the service button, the
  inserted FDS disk side, a Datach barcode scan) and `DeviceInput` (one
  variant per `InputDevice` kind, holding exactly the fields its `Nes`
  setter writes, never the device's shift registers). The set was
  enumerated from `Nes`'s own setters; DIP switches, the Four Score and
  the Vs. PPU type stay configuration (`HardwareOptions`), the disk's
  write protection is a property of the medium, Reset / Power Cycle are
  still not recorded.
- `FrameInput` gains `extra: Option<ExtraInput>` (additive under its
  `#[non_exhaustive]`). `held_on` fills it from the machine
  (`ExtraInput::capture`), so every recorder -- desktop, browser,
  Android, iOS, the history viewer -- records it with no change of its
  own. `apply_to` drives it back: devices, microphone, coin and service
  every frame as a host's per-frame call does; the disk only when the
  recorded side differs (an insert resets the head and opens the
  not-ready window); a scan when present. `None` keeps the pre-v3.5.0
  meaning, controllers only, so importers, TAStudio blank frames and
  macros do not eject a disk or unplug a Zapper (the neutral
  `ExtraInput` is a real input: no device, disk ejected).
  `apply_to` / `held_on` are no longer `const fn`.
- A scan is an event, not a level: `Nes::barcode_this_frame` holds a
  scan from `scan_barcode` until the next `run_frame` starts (cleared at
  its top; host-input staging, not serialized, determinism unaffected).
  New getters `Nes::vs_coin`, `vs_service`, `microphone`, and
  `scan_barcode_code` for an already-parsed code.
- `.rnm` format 7 (`MOVIE_FORMAT_VERSION` 7, minimum 7): an INPUT
  EVENTS block after the 5-byte records -- u32 count, then u32 frame,
  kind byte, payload -- written only where a frame differs from the one
  before (plus every scan); a controller-only movie spends 4 bytes. The
  decoder is strict (sorted by frame/kind/port and inside the movie,
  values a device can hold, presence events that switch presence, no
  event that changes nothing, block consumed exactly), so a parsed
  movie re-encodes to the same bytes; the event-count reservation is
  bounded by the bytes present. A format-6 movie fails with
  `FormatTooOld` and its reason. `MovieError::BadInputEvents` is new.
  EMULATION_EPOCH unchanged: no frame, sample or bus cycle moved.
- Attestation version 3 folds a fixed 39-byte canonical record of each
  frame's extra input in after the controller bytes.
- `FrameInput::encode_log` / `decode_log` expose the same input
  encoding for hosts that store a log outside a movie.

Frontend (rustynes-frontend)
- `session_policy`: owners split into `recording` / `playing`. A
  recording allows, and records, a disk swap, a barcode scan and a Vs.
  coin (`recorded()`); playback and netplay refuse them; Reset, Power
  Cycle and state loads stay refused during any movie. Menu greying and
  the barcode window follow; the Spanish and English lock text updated.
- Fix: the Vs. coin (F10 and the menu dispatch) was asked about nowhere
  and inserted a coin on one netplay peer only, never released because
  the emulation thread that counts it down idles during netplay; now
  `TimelineAction::InsertCoin`, refused during netplay and playback, and
  held by the route audit test. Found by reading the code while deciding
  whether netplay should carry the new inputs; not reproduced live.
- The coin countdown runs before the movie hook, not after, so a
  recording does not claim the coin one frame longer than the frame ran
  with (`a_recorded_coin_replays_to_the_live_machine`). Live behaviour
  is unchanged.
- The history timeline is no longer cleared by a disk swap or a scan
  (T-HISTORY-DISK-SWAP, superseded): a clip spanning a swap replays it
  (`a_history_clip_spanning_a_disk_swap_replays_it`).
- TAStudio: `.rnmproj` version 2 stores each log via `encode_log`, so a
  project keeps players 3 and 4 and the extra input (version 1 dropped
  them, and still loads); stamping a button macro keeps each target
  frame's extra input.

Netplay: unchanged (protocol 9). A session exchanges one controller
byte per player per frame and its tick drives `set_buttons` only, so it
never feeds these inputs; nothing diverges, they are unavailable.
Carrying them needs a wider input cell and an aim-point prediction rule.

Gate: crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/movie_input_stream.rs, default
build, synthetic NROM / Vs. NROM / FDS disk + synthetic BIOS (no CC0 ROM
in tests/roms reads the Zapper, the coin bits or $4032; no real BIOS
needed). A Zapper movie (microphone keyed, port 0 pressed, the gun
unplugged for ten frames), a Vs. movie (both acceptors, service) and an
FDS movie (eject, side B, side A, eject, side A) each replay through the
serialized .rnm identical per frame on framebuffer + audio FNV, on a
per-frame save-state digest, and on the end state; dropping each event
kind makes its replay differ; every device kind captures / applies /
round-trips; a scan is recorded on exactly one frame and replays. The
synthetic BIOS's $4032 reads the same for side A and side B (measured),
so the side is covered by the state digest, not the picture.

Mutations, each run against the gate and reverted (logs kept outside
the repo):
- writer drops DEVICE / MICROPHONE / VS_COIN / VS_SERVICE / DISK /
  BARCODE events: caught by the Zapper (frame 1), Zapper (frame 1), Vs.
  (frame 10), Vs. (frame 50), FDS (frame 1) and barcode (end state)
  tests.
- apply never re-inserts a side: caught (FDS, frame 31). Every coin into
  acceptor #1: caught (Vs., frame 70). Capture trigger released: caught.
  Capture microphone released: caught. Next frame keeps the barcode:
  caught.
- NOT CAUGHT, then remediated (stimulus blind): "never unplug a device"
  until the Zapper movie unplugged the gun; "every insert is side A"
  until the gate compared a per-frame state digest. Both now caught.
- attestation stops folding the extra input: caught by
  `an_edited_extra_input_fails_verification`.
- frontend: coin countdown moved back after the hook: caught by
  `a_recorded_coin_replays_to_the_live_machine` on the recorded frames
  ([6, 7, 8] vs [6, 7]); with that assertion removed, the replay half was
  NOT CAUGHT (stimulus blind: the test program read $4016 only at
  vblank), remediated by a program that ORs $4016 all frame and a
  per-frame state comparison -- now diverges at frame 8. swap_disk
  clearing the history again, and the writer dropping disk events: both
  caught by `a_history_clip_spanning_a_disk_swap_replays_it`.

Docs: ADR 0044 dated amendment (format 7); docs/frontend.md (survey
rows, a "non-controller inputs" section, session lockout); creator-tools
(its "movies record two ports" paragraph was stale since v2.9.8);
pixel-provenance (attestation v3); mappers.md (Datach scans recorded);
ROADMAP (T-MOVIE-INPUT-STREAM done, T-HISTORY-DISK-SWAP superseded);
CHANGELOG [Unreleased].

Not done: foreign importers still drop the FDS / Vs. coin commands of
.fm2 (parsed, ignored, as before); the mobile bridge's disk swap and
coin are not refused during netplay or playback (playback overrides
them each frame; netplay was already exposed); libretro and Lua record
no movies.

HostWarning, the machine-readable warning codes the Android and iOS apps
localise (v2.0.3), was defined in the UniFFI bridge. The desktop and
browser frontends cannot depend on the bridge, and the docs said they
stayed "in parity" by carrying identical English literals of their own.

Measured first: they carry none. Neither message text occurs anywhere in
crates/rustynes-frontend/src, because neither code has a desktop or
browser producer. PreTimebaseMovie is produced nowhere since v2.9.8
(older movies are refused), and RecoveredFromInternalError is queued by
the bridge's poisoned-lock recovery, which needs an unwinding panic; the
desktop and browser release profile is panic = "abort". So the
"migration" had no literal to replace. What it can do, and does, is make
the codes and their English one definition at the surface every host
already shares:

- rustynes-core gains `host_warning` (no_std + alloc): the enum, its
  canonical English `message()` (byte-identical text), Display, and
  `HostWarning::ALL`; re-exported as rustynes_core::HostWarning. The
  module records which host produces which code and why.
- rustynes-mobile re-exports that type and declares it to UniFFI with
  #[uniffi::remote(Enum)]. The compiler checks the declaration against
  the core enum (a mutant adding a variant to the core alone fails the
  mobile build with E0004 at the remote declaration). Its own
  message()/Display impls are gone; the drains and host_warning_message
  use the core's.

Bindings: Kotlin and Swift were generated with the crate's
uniffi-bindgen from HEAD (a git-archive export, separate target dir) and
from this change. Every non-comment line is identical and the C header
(rustynes_mobileFFI.h) and modulemap are byte-identical; the only
differences are the doc comments carried from the declaration, which
were rewritten.

Tests: core host_warning (1, pins both messages in full and Display);
mobile 66 passed / 0 failed, including the existing
host_warning_code_maps_to_exact_legacy_english. Mutations: a one-word
change to the core's message text fails both the core test and the
mobile legacy-English test; a variant added in the core only fails the
mobile build at the remote declaration (and the core's own match).

Gates: fmt; clippy -D warnings rustynes-core, rustynes-mobile and
rustynes-frontend (all targets); no_std thumbv7em build of rustynes-core;
rustdoc -D warnings for core and mobile.

…-SPEEDRUN-MEMIF)

D33's speedrun row: start/split/reset as RAM predicates in the
RetroAchievements condition grammar, time in master-clock cycles,
splits exported, and a stable documented memory-export interface over
CR-02's shared memory that a LiveSplit-style tool reads without
per-version base addresses. ADR 0047; the contract is
docs/memory-export-interface.md.

Core (`rustynes_core::speedrun`, no_std, read-only):
- A documented subset of the RA condition grammar, written from RA's
  public description of the syntax: sizes M-T/L/U/H/K/16/W/X and
  big-endian I/J/G, prefixes d/p/b/~, decimal and h-hex constants, the
  six comparisons, `_` conditions, `S` alt groups (the tokenizer reads
  `0xS` as bit 6, not a separator), and `.N.` hit targets. Flags,
  arithmetic, floats and signed constants are REFUSED with a message,
  never misread. Addresses are RA's NES flat space (0x0000-0x07FF RAM,
  0x0800-0x27FF = $6000-$7FFF), the mapping rustynes-cheevos uses.
  A `d` operand on its first evaluation equals the current value, so no
  phantom edge at power-on.
- A line-based splits file (game, category, start, `split = name |
  cond`, reset; up to 64 splits).
- `SpeedrunTimer`: evaluated once per frame after the frame; times are
  differences of the CPU master clock; seconds from exact per-region
  fractions (NTSC 236,250,000/11, PAL/Dendy 53,203,425/2). A backward
  step or a leap over sixteen PAL frames abandons the run
  (Discontinuity). JSON result, format rustynes-splits-result v1.

Frontend:
- `memif` (feature `memif`, in `full`): layout v1, 0x2B00 bytes, magic
  RNESMEMF, header counters, region fraction, ROM SHA-256, epoch, timer
  state/start/elapsed, CPU RAM at 0x0100 and the $6000 window at 0x0900
  (so flat address x is at 0x0100 + x), and a 64-entry split table, all
  published as one seqlock update per frame. Per-user, owner-only names
  from the previous commit's shm rules.
- `rustynes speedrun --rom --splits [--movie | --frames] [--json]
  [--memif --memif-name --memif-hold-ms]`: headless, exit 0 finished /
  2 unfinished / 1 error.
- Live: `rustynes game.nes --splits F [--splits-json F] [--memif]`
  installs a `SpeedrunHost` on `EmuCore` (`app::run_with`); it is fed in
  `produce_frame` after both the plain and the run-ahead path end on the
  persistent frame and before caller-side cheat pokes.
- `scripts/memif/reference_splitter.py` (stdlib only, written from the
  doc's table alone, checks owner/mode before trusting the block) and
  `scripts/memif/two_build_check.sh`.

Gate (plan row, both halves):
- "A run timed from a movie matches its cycle count on every replay":
  `cargo test -p rustynes-test-harness --test speedrun_timer`: 2 passed,
  1 ignored (the fixture writer). A synthetic NROM (assembled in the
  test, ours) reads the pad into $10 in its NMI; the movie presses
  Start (frame 30), B (80), A (150). Recorded run: elapsed 42,884,172
  master clocks (1.997 s), splits 17,868,384 / 42,884,172; it equals
  (CPU cycles between the start and finish frames) x 12; three replays
  from the serialized .rnm are identical. A second test shows timing
  does not change the run (framebuffer hash, master clock, RAM equal
  with and without the timer).
- "A reference splitter reads the documented interface on two builds
  without changes": `scripts/memif/two_build_check.sh` PASS. Build A
  debug `--features memif`, build B release `--features full`
  (different binaries, checked); the same reader followed each block to
  `finished` and saw elapsed 42,884,172 and splits [17868384, 42884172],
  frame 151, 152 publishes; 12 fields identical across builds and equal
  to each build's own JSON.

Other gates: core `--lib` 265 passed; frontend `--features
scripting,script-ipc,memif --lib` 751 passed / 2 ignored; frontend
default (all targets) 718 passed / 1 ignored; test-harness default 154
passed / 1 ignored (feature_flag_audit needed the new STATUS.md row);
clippy -D warnings for the frontend with default, scripting,
scripting+hd-pack, retroachievements, full, memif, scripting+script-ipc,
both wasm32 invocations, core + harness; rustdoc -D warnings for core
and frontend (default; memif; scripting+script-ipc+memif, which also
needed a pre-existing private intra-doc link `DROP_GRACE` in
script_host turned into a code span); thumbv7em no_std core build.

Mutations (value mutants, rebuilt each time): elapsed +12 CAUGHT;
master clock replaced by the CPU cycle counter CAUGHT; delta initial
value 0 CAUGHT; bit-size base shifted CAUGHT; group separator `S`->`Z`
CAUGHT; hit target `>=`->`>` CAUGHT; NTSC fraction 11->12 CAUGHT; memif
FRAME offset moved CAUGHT; memif publish leaving the counter odd CAUGHT;
memif cart window off by one CAUGHT; the reference splitter's elapsed
offset moved CAUGHT (it read 10,721,064, the start clock, against the
expected 42,884,172). The discontinuity test came back NOT CAUGHT for
`master_clock < last` -> `< last / 2` (stimulus blind: the test only
jumped far back); a one-frame step back was added and now CATCHES it.

Not verified: LiveSplit itself was not run; the reader ran on Linux only
(Windows/macOS code compiled and linted, not run); the desktop window's
live --splits/--memif path shares the timer and block with the headless
command but was not exercised (no display here). Deferred: a Lua-side
speedrun API (scripts declaring splits) and LiveSplit .lss export; the
JSON result is the export. ADR number 0047 may need renumbering if
another v3.5.0 branch takes it first.

Found by the ora-movie agent: the mobile bridge's `set_disk_side` and
`insert_coin` asked nothing before acting, so during a netplay session a
swap or a coin happened on one peer only and the session desynced (a coin
was also never released: the frame loop that counts `coin_frames` down is
the session's own). The desktop fixed the same gap on feat/v3.5.0-movie
(09dab23, `session_policy`, `TimelineAction::InsertCoin`); this follows
that commit's table, not merged here:

| action | recording | playback | netplay |
| disk swap / coin | allowed (format 7 records it) | refused | refused |

- `media_refusal(g, what)`: `MobileError::Netplay` while
  `netplay_owns_timeline` (a session present, connecting, or ended in an
  unacknowledged error, the same test reset/power_cycle/load_state use),
  else `MobileError::Movie` during playback, else Ok. Existing variants, so
  the generated error types are unchanged.
- `set_disk_side` and `insert_coin` now return `Result<(), MobileError>`
  and check BEFORE acting. Generated bindings checked with the crate's
  uniffi-bindgen: Kotlin `@Throws(MobileException::class)` on both, Swift
  `throws` on both.
- Android (MainActivity.kt): `insertCoin()` returns the refusal text
  (catching MobileException); the disk button catches it; both show a
  Toast. iOS: EmulatorCore `flipDisk()` / `insertCoin()` are `throws`;
  GameView runs them through a new `refusable {}` that puts the error in
  `AppModel.warningMessage`, the existing alert.

The recording row assumes 09dab23's format-7 recorder: on this branch
alone a recording does not yet carry the swap or the coin. The two
branches are meant to merge together; if this one lands first, a swap
during a recording breaks that movie exactly as it did before this commit
(no regression, and no fix until 09dab23 lands).

Test (rustynes-mobile): `disk_swaps_and_coins_are_refused_during_netplay_
and_playback`: an FDS swap outside netplay works, inside np_host is
refused with Netplay and the side does not move, after np_leave works
again; a coin outside netplay latches VS_COIN_HOLD_FRAMES, inside is
refused and latches nothing; a coin during a recording is allowed; during
playback both are refused with Movie. The two existing tests that call
these now `expect` the Ok path.

Mutations (each restored, cmp-checked): drop the netplay check, drop the
playback check, refuse during a recording too, swap before the check,
latch the coin before the check: all 5 CAUGHT.

Gates: cargo fmt --all --check clean; clippy -D warnings rustynes-mobile
--all-targets clean (two significant_drop_tightening fixed with an explicit
drop); rustdoc -D warnings clean; rustynes-mobile 69 passed / 0 failed.

NOT VERIFIED HERE: the Kotlin and Swift edits were not compiled (no
kotlinc / swiftc / Android SDK / Xcode on this host). Docs: docs/android.md

…e speedrun auto-timer with its memory-export interface

From the ora-script agent: CR-01 (a real `comm.ws*` client, SEC-04
address checks, 1 MiB messages, a 4 MiB undrained cap), CR-02 (the
memory-mapped file API on POSIX shm / Win32 file mappings, owner-only and
refusing objects another user could squat: per-user names, fstat/SID
owner checks, 0600 / an owner-only DACL), and T-SPEEDRUN-MEMIF
(`rustynes_core::speedrun`, the master-clock timer, the layout-v1 memory
export block, `rustynes speedrun`, ADR 0047).

One conflict: CHANGELOG [Unreleased]. The movie branch's Breaking /
Added / Fixed / Not-changed sections are kept, and this branch's three
Added entries go into that Added section; nothing is dropped.
app.rs, emu.rs and rustynes-core's lib.rs merged without conflict.

Verified on the merged tree: cargo fmt --check; clippy -D warnings for the

movie_input_stream 6 passed, speedrun_timer 2 passed (1 ignored, the

passed (2 ignored); rustynes-core --lib 274 passed.

…FE-07)

Three expansion devices had fixed host keys: the Famicom microphone
(MICROPHONE_KEY, N), the 12 Power Pad / Family Trainer mat buttons
(POWER_PAD_KEYS) and the 72 Family BASIC keyboard matrix positions (a
`match` inside family_keyboard_index). Each carried a "rebindable is a
follow-up" note.

Config: InputConfig gains `device_keys: DeviceKeyBindings`
([input.device_keys]): `power_pad` (12 names), `microphone`,
`family_keyboard` (72 names, "" = unbound), each field
#[serde(default = ...)] to the old layout. The table is
skip_serializing_if is_default, so an untouched config loads and SAVES
byte-identically (added to a_default_config_writes_no_empty_opt_in_tables).
A list of the wrong length is accepted: missing slots are unbound, extra
entries ignored, and `normalized()` pads/truncates for the editor.

Input: KeyBindings gains `devices: DeviceKeyMap`, resolved by
DeviceKeyMap::from_config (unknown names warn and unbind, as for pads).
handle_key consults every mat slot and the microphone slot for the event's
key (so two slots on one key press together; nothing assumes one-to-one).
The old fixed layout is now data: FAMILY_KEYBOARD_DEFAULT_KEYS (58 keys
in position order, extracted mechanically from the old match and checked
to be positions 0..57 in order); family_keyboard_index looks a key up in
it (no longer const; its only caller was runtime code), and
InputState::family_keyboard_positions answers for the live layout, which
app.rs's Family BASIC hunk now uses. The Hyper Shot keys stay fixed (not
in this item).

Settings -> Input -> Device keys: the microphone, the 12 mat buttons and
the 72 positions (collapsible), each with the panel's existing
capture-the-next-key rebind plus a clear, and one reset; changes flag
bindings_dirty (live reload + auto-save), as pad rebinds do. Slot gains
Microphone / PowerPad(n) / FamilyKey(n); slot_display composes their
labels. EN/ES strings added.

Tests (frontend lib 735 passed / 0 failed / 1 ignored, default
features; +8): defaults equal the old fixed layout (all 12 + mic + all
72 positions); a rebound mat button follows only its new key and two
slots on one key press together; a rebound and an unbound microphone;
rebound / unknown / short-list keyboard positions; reload_bindings
applies a rebind; partial-table load, save/load round trip and every
default name parsing back; panel slots write, clear and pad a short list;
a device capture is a keyboard capture.

Mutations, 8 of 8 caught: mat press restricted to the old fixed keys;
microphone back to MICROPHONE_KEY; keyboard positions from the default
index; skip_serializing_if removed; default microphone KeyM; panel mat
slot off by one; normalize to 70 positions; mat names read offset by one.

Gates: fmt; clippy -D warnings for default, scripting, scripting+hd-pack,
retroachievements, full, and both wasm32 invocations; rustdoc
-D warnings. Not unit-reachable, manual: the app.rs key-event hunk (rebind
a keyboard position with Family BASIC selected and type it in BASIC) and
the panel's rendering.

Docs: docs/frontend.md (Family BASIC keyboard bullet),
docs/user-guide/controls.md (new "Expansion-device keys" section),

T-MCP-SERVER (D33, v3.5.0 plan "Power-user rows"). A new workspace crate
and binary that serves one ROM to a Model Context Protocol client over
stdio, so an agent can observe the machine, step it, and run experiments
of the form fork(state) -> run(inputs) -> diff, each reproducible by
replay. ADR 0047 records the decisions; docs/mcp-server.md is the spec.

Shape
- crates/rustynes-mcp: lib (session, tools, observe, input, host) + bin.
  Depends on rustynes-core (debug-hooks, for exec breakpoints; already
  unified on by rustynes-script, so no workspace feature changes) and
  rustynes-script. Not a frontend feature: it needs no window, GPU or
  audio device and collides with no other v3.5.0 branch.
- The official Rust MCP SDK, rmcp 3.5.1 (Apache-2.0), default features
  off, `server` + `transport-io` only: no HTTP, auth or child-process
  transport compiled in. 3.5.1, not 3.6.0, because 3.6.0 was published
  today; `cargo update -p rmcp --precise 3.5.1`. New lock entries (all
  MIT or MIT/Apache-2.0, all already allowed by deny.toml): rmcp,
  schemars(+derive), serde_derive_internals, tokio-util, futures(-*),
  chrono, iana-time-zone(-haiku), dyn-clone, ref-cast(-impl), pastey,
  tracing-attributes. Only rustynes-mcp reaches them.
- Session is synchronous and transport-free (call(name, json args) ->
  ToolOutput | ToolError), so the whole surface is tested without a
  client; Host adds the lock, the real-time runner thread and the rmcp
  ServerHandler (list_tools / call_tool), with each call on tokio's
  blocking pool so long fork runs do not stall the transport.

Tools (25): info, pause, resume, set_input, step_frames,
step_instructions, breakpoint_add/remove/list, read_memory (cpu/ppu/oam,
side-effect free), write_ram ($0000-$07FF only), cpu_state, screenshot
(PNG), nametable (30x32 hex tile text + attributes + scroll), oam (sprite
table), observe (layers), reset, lua_eval, fork_create, fork_run,
fork_diff, fork_adopt, fork_delete, movie_export, movie_verify. The
machine starts paused; resume runs it at the region frame rate until
pause, a breakpoint, a jam or max_frames (<= 36,000).

Reproducibility
- A fork is a second Nes from the same ROM image restored from its
  origin's snapshot. It takes controller input only and records a .rnm
  with StartPoint::SaveState. movie_verify serialises it, replays the
  bytes on a third machine built from the ROM alone, and compares save
  state, WRAM, SRAM, framebuffer and frame counter byte for byte.
- Main keeps a journal: a movie segment restarted from a snapshot on
  every non-input change (write_ram, instruction step, breakpoint stop,
  reset, fork_adopt, 216,000-frame roll). The segment in force replays.
- Uses the current Movie / MovieRecorder API unchanged; no .rnm format,
  netplay protocol or EMULATION_EPOCH change (no frame, sample or bus
  cycle changes). When T-MOVIE-INPUT-STREAM lands, fork input segments
  can grow its fields; until then the server exposes no non-controller
  input, so nothing it does goes unrecorded.

Security: undeclared tool -> JSON-RPC -32602 (debug_poke_ppu,
poke_oam_byte, debug_set_cpu_state, restore are deliberately absent);
every argument type deny_unknown_fields (schema additionalProperties
false); write_ram outside $0000-$07FF refused; agent Lua in
rustynes-script's sandbox with set_writes_locked(true), then a save-state
comparison that restores and refuses on any change; no tool reads a file;
movie_export writes only into --out-dir, name [A-Za-z0-9_-]{1,64}.rnm,
create_new (never overwrites); every limit refused, not truncated; stdio
only, no listener.

Gate (tests/): gate.rs scripted_session_forks_replay_byte_identically
(four forks, an appended run, a fork of a fork; each verified by
movie_verify AND by an independent replay of the exported bytes),
the_main_journal_replays_across_every_non_input_change,
the_same_session_twice_records_the_same_bytes, dispatch == catalogue,
observation layers, real-time pause/breakpoint; refusals.rs (7 tests,
each comparing the save state before and after); stdio.rs drives the
built binary over JSON-RPC; a unit test opens the Lua lock to prove the
second layer undoes a breach. Fixture: a hand-assembled 16 KiB NROM in
tests/common/rom.rs (no ROM file) that reads the pad into $10, sums it
into $12 and paints the backdrop from the sum.

Mutations (value mutants, all compile; 16/16 caught, listed in
docs/mcp-server.md "Mutations"): fork records a different input (M1),
journal not restarted on instruction step / breakpoint / write_ram
(M2-M4), Lua writes unlocked (M5), post-Lua state check disabled (M6),
write_ram bound $2000 (M7), deny_unknown_fields dropped (M8), unknown
tool -> info (M9), export name allows / and . (M10), export overwrites
(M11), replayer drops a frame (M12), fork at power-on (M13), fork_diff
blind to WRAM (M14), main journals a different input (M15), runner
ignores max_frames (M16). First run: M2 NOT CAUGHT (stimulus blind:
an instruction step with unchanged input replays anyway since run_frame
finishes the frame; the test now steps through the controller read, then
changes input) and M6 NOT CAUGHT (out of surface: the second Lua layer is
unreachable while the first holds; a unit test opens the first through a
private field). Both caught after remediation.

Not done: HTTP transport; per-game RAM schemas (T-AI-PLAY); FDS/NSF
images; audio observation; non-controller input.

…core

From the ora-mcp agent (T-MCP-SERVER, D33): a new workspace crate and
stdio binary on rmcp 3.5.1 (Apache-2.0), 25 tools including pause, the
observation layers (frame, nametable as tile text, OAM) and
fork / run / diff / adopt, every fork recorded as an .rnm and verified by
replaying it on a fresh machine.

Resolved:
- ADR number collision: this branch and feat/v3.5.0-script each added an
  ADR 0047. The speedrun one (already on the integration branch) keeps
  0047; this one is renumbered to 0048 (file, heading, and every
  reference in the crate docs, docs/mcp-server.md, the documentation
  index and the CHANGELOG). The one remaining "ADR 0047" in the CHANGELOG
  is the speedrun entry's, correctly.
- CHANGELOG [Unreleased]: the MCP Added entry joins the existing Added
  section; DOCUMENTATION_INDEX: both rows kept.

Verified on the merged tree: cargo fmt --check; clippy --workspace
--all-targets -D warnings (0 errors); cargo test -p rustynes-mcp 17
passed (lib 3, gate 6, refusals 7, stdio 1); markdownlint on the changed
docs.

… (FE-04)

The FDS half of the old Multi-Disk Bundler item shipped in v1.8.9 as a
Disk Side submenu over ONE image; nothing named its slots, a game dumped
as one file per disk could not get past its first file, and there was
nothing for multicarts.

Interpretation (the backlog row says only "named FDS and multicart
slots"; recorded here so the coordinator can disagree): a bundle is a
TOML manifest, *.rnbundle, naming image slots ([[slot]] name / path,
paths relative to the manifest, names defaulting to the file stem), and
it opens wherever a ROM opens. All slots must be one kind, by extension:

- FDS bundle: merge_fds parses each slot with the core's own parse_fds
  (fwNES, headerless and QD dumps accepted exactly as a single .fds load
  accepts them) and concatenates the sides in slot order into one
  headerless image, which then loads as any .fds does (BIOS, the
  .fds.sav keyed by the merged image's pristine hash, stable for a given
  manifest and images, disk swapping). Each side is named
  "<slot> side A", "B", ...; the Famicom Disk System submenu shows those
  instead of "Side N". More than 255 sides together is refused.
- Cartridge bundle (.nes / .unf / .unif): slot i's image is the ROM
  (clamped); a new Emulation -> Multicart submenu lists the slots by name
  and reloads through the manifest with the one picked. Each slot is an
  ordinary ROM load with its own saves; nothing is combined.

Plumbing: bundle::read_rom_or_bundle(path, slot) replaces the
std::fs::read in both ROM load paths, so menu, Open Recent, drag-and-drop
(the desktop drop accepts .rnbundle) and argv all open bundles; any other
file reads as itself, unchanged. load_rom_from_path now forwards to
load_rom_at(path, slot) (the old body, renamed; its source-shape tests
every_load_path_* now name load_rom_at). App::new uses load_startup_rom
(the old load_and_preprocess_rom plus the bundle; the two-value form
stays for the zip/patch tests). App::bundle holds the open bundle; every
non-bundle load clears it. ShellFrame gains disk_side_names /
bundle_slots / bundle_slot; MenuAction gains SelectBundleSlot and
NewBundle. File -> New Multi-Disk Bundle... (new_bundle_dialog) picks the
images, then the manifest path, writes the manifest atomically
(manifest_text_for, relative paths when the images sit under the
manifest's directory) and opens it. The Multicart and New Bundle items
are locked with Open ROM while netplay forbids a ROM change. Reads are
bounded: manifest 64 KiB, each image 16 MiB, at most 64 slots.

Tests: 8 in bundle.rs (frontend lib 743 passed / 0 failed / 1 ignored,
default features): manifest resolution; refusals (no slots, 65 slots,
mixed kinds, a .zip slot, bad TOML); merge order and side names; a bad
disk and the 255-side bound; both kinds opened from real files
(tempdir), slot clamping, a plain file read as itself, a missing
manifest; a written manifest round-tripping; and the merged set building
a three-side console through Nes::from_disk (an 8 KiB zero image stands
in for the uncommitted BIOS) and inserting side 3.

Mutations, 9 of 9 caught: merge order reversed; side names numbered
instead of lettered; the mixed-kinds check disabled; relative paths not
joined to the manifest dir; the slot clamp off by one; the slot-count
upper bound removed; the side bound 255 -> 256; the extension check made
case-sensitive; raw slot bytes appended instead of the parsed sides.

Gates: fmt; clippy -D warnings default, scripting, scripting+hd-pack,
retroachievements, full, both wasm32 invocations; rustdoc -D warnings.
Manual (no window in a unit test): the two dialogs and both submenus,
and a real multi-disk FDS game booting from a bundle with its BIOS.

Docs: docs/frontend.md (new "Multi-Disk Bundler" section; the old
"deferred" list marks it shipped), docs/user-guide/menus.md (File and
Emulation tables, a "Multi-Disk bundles" section), the DEFERRED section 1
entries for the bundler and (FE-03) the A/V sync half, CHANGELOG
[Unreleased].

…ESERVE-DUMP-VERIFY)

D33 power-user row for v3.5.0. Home: a headless subcommand beside
`rustynes verify` (same shape: no window, no audio; exit codes distinct),
because the frontend always links rustynes-core with `debug-hooks`, whose
bus-access log the behaviour check needs. Logic in a native-only module,
crates/rustynes-frontend/src/dump_check.rs, pure over byte slices so the
fixtures reach every path; main.rs only reads files (64 MiB cap) and maps
the verdict to an exit code: 0 nothing found, 4 findings, 1 error (2 stays
clap's usage error, 3 verify's "no attestation").

  rustynes dump-check <ROM> [--dat FILE] [--nes20db FILE] [--frames N=600]

Checks (docs/dump-check.md is the spec):
- Hashes: SHA-256 + CRC-32 of the bytes after the 16-byte header (trainer
  included, the span headerless DATs and nes20db's <rom> cover) and of the
  whole file.
- A user-supplied No-Intro DAT (Logiqx XML, <game>/<machine> of <rom>):
  SHA-256 match = verified; a row without SHA-256 can match on CRC-32 +
  size, reported as the weaker claim; a row whose SHA-256 differs never
  matches on CRC. Headerless and headered conventions both tried, reported.
- A user-supplied nes20db.xml: the entry with this headerless CRC + size,
  every disagreeing header field named (6 fields on iNES 1.0, 16 on NES
  2.0). No DAT and no database is shipped.
- The built-in game database: rustynes_gamedb::correct_rom (the shared
  load path) on a copy, every header byte it would change.
- Size: truncated / trailing data; overdump: halves identical down to 8 KiB,
  reported as suspected.
- Behaviour: the core runs the image as its header says, no input, N frames,
  access log on: $8000+ writes on a mapper-0 header; >= 1 KiB of $2007
  pattern-table writes (PPU address modelled from $2000/2/5/6/7) on a
  CHR-ROM header of a board that cannot carry CHR-RAM beside it (0, 1, 2, 3,
  4, 7, 9, 10, 11, 66); $6000-$7FFF writes on a NES 2.0 NROM header with no
  PRG-RAM.
rustynes_gamedb::crc32 is now pub (doc'd) for the headerless/whole-file
CRCs; nothing else in gamedb changed.

The XML reader is a small tag scanner (no new dependency) that never
panics: unterminated tags/quotes end the scan, unknown entities are kept,
every number has a failure path, a file with no game is refused.

Measured on the 443 local commercial dumps (gitignored, never committed;
only counts recorded) with the 2021-12-25 nes20db.xml, 600 frames: exit 0
294 / exit 4 149; 393 listed, 259 agree on every field; 203 field
disagreements (24 NES 2.0 headers say PlayChoice-10 for NES carts; mapper
rows are known duplicate numbers like 146 vs 79); 15 headers the built-in
DB corrects; 3 suspected overdumps; 1 size finding; 3 core refusals; 0
behaviour findings. The FIRST corpus pass (120 frames) is what shaped the
rules: its CHR rule raised 25 findings, all false (boards with CHR-RAM
beside CHR-ROM: TQROM, Waixing clones, UNROM 512, multicarts; and CHR-ROM
games writing a few bytes, 1942 96, Vs. SMB 129, Dragon Warrior 16), so the
rule got the board list and a 1 KiB threshold; 9 size findings were
iNES 1.0 PlayChoice-10 data (byte 7 bit 1, 8,224 bytes), now exempt;
mirroring diffs fell 42 -> 3 once boards that switch their own mirroring
(core's mapper_has_hardwired_mirroring) were exempt; expansion device 105
-> 2 once NES 2.0's 0 (unspecified) is not a disagreement. NOT measured:
the behaviour rules' recall on a real wrong header (no real dump in the
corpus trips one); they are pinned by planted fixtures only.

Gate: 17 dump_check tests + 1 CLI parse test, fixtures built in the test
(tiny NROM programs): a good dump verified by a DAT built for it (GOOD), its
PRG read twice into 32 KiB (BAD DUMP), a 1 KiB tile upload under a CHR-ROM
header (WRONG HEADER; clean under CHR-RAM), a $8000 write under mapper 0
(WRONG HEADER), a $6000 write under a NES 2.0 NROM header with no PRG-RAM
(WRONG HEADER; clean when declared or on iNES 1.0), planted nes20db
entries (fields named), DAT conventions, size findings, the exemptions,
the PPU address model, malformed XML.

Mutations (values; each restored, cmp-checked): overdump floor x4, CHR
threshold 2048, mapper 0 dropped from the board list, ROM-write rule on
mapper 1, headered flag false, battery bit 0x04, RAM size 128<<n, PPU
increment 32->1, PlayChoice size 8192, expansion 0 compared, mirroring
always compared, trailing threshold 64, WRAM rule >1, CRC match ignoring a
differing SHA-256, $2002 not resetting the latch: 15/15 CAUGHT (two of them,
the WRAM rule and the SHA-256 case, only after adding the tests that pin
them).

Gates: cargo fmt --all --check clean; clippy -D warnings clean for
rustynes-frontend default, scripting, scripting+hd-pack, retroachievements,
full, both wasm32 invocations, and rustynes-gamedb (three too_many_lines
allowed locally with the reason: flat per-field / per-line lists); rustdoc
-D warnings clean (frontend, gamedb); gamedb 26/0; frontend dump_check +
cli 29/0. Docs: docs/dump-check.md (new, in mkdocs nav), docs/frontend.md
CLI table (verify + dump-check rows), CHANGELOG [Unreleased] Added,
ROADMAP row marked DONE.

…nd T-WEB-RA-PROXY-LAZY done

Status only, kept out of the three implementation commits (0c8adb6,
e87fa09, 697c917) so each stays one ticket. Each row says what the gate
does not cover: the Kotlin/Swift halves of the relay validator are not
compiled by it, and the RA glue's live-session rule cannot run in workerd.
T-HOSTED-TURN-EXPIRY (d5c4af4, 9ccbbef) and T-PRESERVE-DUMP-VERIFY

From the ora-desktop agent, seven commits: emu-thread priority on
Windows and macOS (FE-08), an A/V sync offset for recordings (FE-03),
browser drag-and-drop of ROMs, movies and the FDS BIOS (FE-05), the Vs.
DualSystem cabinet in the wasm-canvas embed (FE-10), one HostWarning
definition in rustynes-core for every frontend (FE-06), rebindable
microphone / Power Pad / Family BASIC keys (FE-07), and Multi-Disk
bundles with named FDS and multicart slots (FE-04).

One conflict, CHANGELOG [Unreleased]: this branch's Added entries join
the Added section, and its new Changed section goes between Added and
Fixed; nothing dropped. app.rs, input.rs and config.rs (also touched by
the movie and script branches) merged without conflict.

Verified on the merged tree: cargo fmt --check; clippy -D warnings for
the workspace and the frontend with scripting, scripting+hd-pack,
retroachievements, full and scripting+script-ipc+memif; both wasm32 clippy
invocations; frontend --lib (scripting,script-ipc,memif) 782 passed,
2 ignored; rustynes-core --lib 275; rustynes-mobile 66;
movie_input_stream 6; speedrun_timer 2 (1 ignored).

…Mesen2

`crates/rustynes-core/src/input_device.rs`'s Power Pad (`PowerPadState`
and its `reload`) was written in v1.1.0 (b60bc76, 2026-06-14) with a doc
comment and a commit body citing "Mesen's implementation" / "the NESdev /
Mesen layout" and "Mesen-matched" unit tests, and carried no
`// Provenance:` header. A v3.5.0 agent building the MiSTer Power Pad
read the file (readable, having no header) and raised the citation.

The layout it implements is stated verbatim on the vendored NESdev page
(`nesdev_wiki/Power_Pad.xhtml`: D3 "buttons 2, 1, 5, 9, 6, 10, 11, 7", D4
"buttons 4, 3, 12, 8 (following 4 bits read as H=1)"), so it may be a
documented fact cross-checked against Mesen rather than a port. Whether
Mesen2's source was read in June 2026 is not recorded, and this project
does not self-certify either way, so the maintainer chose (2026-10-21)
to attribute it as derived: a header naming the Power Pad region only, a
section 1 row and a NOTICE line, in one change. Nothing is reworded or
removed; the original citation stays as written.

The sibling's consequence (its fc_periph Power Pad was written from the
NESdev page by an agent that had read this region before it carried a
header) is disclosed in the sibling's own provenance doc, in its v3.5.0
branch.

Verified: provenance_record_audit 2 passed (header and row agree in both
directions); cargo fmt --check; markdownlint.

… dump-check

Security finding (automated review, confirmed by the coordinator) on
4f347f6: `rustynes dump-check` printed strings from the user-supplied DAT
and NES 2.0 database (DAT game names, nes20db comments used as names, the
mirroring value) straight to the terminal, so a crafted file could embed
ESC / C0 / C1 control characters, an `ESC [2J` or a C1 CSI (U+009B), and
drive the terminal showing the report.

Fix: one helper, `printable`, replaces every `char::is_control` character
(C0, DEL, C1) with a visible `\u{..}` escape. It is applied where such a
string ENTERS the report: DAT `<game>`/`<machine>` names and nes20db names
and `mirroring` at parse time, and the ROM path in `render`. Every later
use (findings messages, the DAT and NES 2.0 DB lines) is therefore already
clean. Numeric fields are parsed to integers and cannot carry text.

Test `file_strings_render_with_no_raw_control_character`: a DAT game name
built from `&#x1b;[2J&#x9b;31m&#7;`, a nes20db comment carrying ESC and
U+009B, a mirroring value with ESC and a ROM path with ESC; the whole
rendered report contains no control character but '\n', and each string
appears with its escapes visible.

Mutations: the helper escaping only NUL (so ESC/CSI pass): test fails;
the nes20db name not passed through it: test fails. Both CAUGHT.

Gates: cargo fmt --all --check clean; clippy -D warnings rustynes-frontend
default, scripting, scripting+hd-pack, retroachievements, full and both
wasm32 invocations: 0 errors each; rustdoc -D warnings clean;
dump_check + cli tests 30/0. Docs: the module's "Input handling" section and
docs/dump-check.md "Input handling".

…the TURN relay back on

From the ora-small agent, nine commits: T-HOSTED-TURN-SANITIZE (empty
TURN credentials refused, refunded 502), T-WEB-RA-PROXY-LAZY (the RA proxy
base read at ra_init), the TURN relay switched back on
(T-HOSTED-TURN-EXPIRY, with the 2026-10-21 billing measurements and the
controlled re-run), T-MOBILE-RELAY-VALIDATE (one relay-URL parser for
Android, iOS and connect; it also stops `:notaport` and friends silently
dialling 80/443), the mobile bridge refusing disk swaps and coins during
netplay and playback, and T-PRESERVE-DUMP-VERIFY (`rustynes dump-check`,
with file-sourced strings escaped before they reach a terminal).

Conflicts, resolved:
- cli.rs: both new subcommands kept (Speedrun from the script branch,
  DumpCheck from this one).
- main.rs: the match keeps the Speedrun arm, adds the DumpCheck arm, and
  keeps the script branch's `None` arm (which passes the speedrun options
  to run_emulator) rather than this branch's plain one.
- CHANGELOG [Unreleased]: each of this branch's sections merged into the
  matching existing section (Breaking / Added / Changed / Fixed / Not
  changed); the blank line before [3.4.2] restored after markdownlint
  caught it.

Verified on the merged tree: cargo fmt --check; clippy -D warnings for the
workspace, the frontend with scripting, scripting+hd-pack,
retroachievements, full and scripting+script-ipc+memif, and both wasm32
invocations; tests for rustynes-frontend (scripting,script-ipc,memif),
rustynes-netplay (netplay-client), rustynes-mobile and rustynes-gamedb:
1,086 passed, 0 failed; the hosted Worker's vitest 132 passed and tsc
--noEmit clean. Kotlin/Swift edits are not compiled here.

Hook note: check-merge-conflict was skipped for this commit only, with
the maintainer's approval. It flags cli.rs:497, which is the `=======`
setext underline under the "Netplay" heading in NETPLAY_BODY's help text
-- present on main and on HEAD before this merge, not a conflict marker.
The hook scans only during a merge, which is why no earlier commit
tripped it; a follow-up commit stops it recurring.

…marker

The `help netplay` topic underlines its heading with seven `=`, written in
the source as a line of exactly `=======`. pre-commit's
check-merge-conflict treats that exact line as a git conflict marker, and
it scans only while a merge is in progress, so the line sat harmlessly on
main until the first merge to touch cli.rs: merging feat/v3.5.0-small
into feat/v3.5.0 (0e3fd9c) was refused at cli.rs:497 and needed a
one-off, maintainer-approved hook skip. Every later merge that touches
this file would have hit the same refusal.

The underline is now written `=\x3d=====`. `\x3d` is the Rust string
escape for `=`, so the help text printed is byte-for-byte what it was; a
comment on the const says why. The other headings in the file have
underlines longer than seven characters, which the hook does not match
(it looks for exactly `=======` at line start), so only this one needed
the change.

A new unit test, netplay_heading_renders_seven_equals, asserts the body
still begins "Netplay\n=======\n\n", so a later edit that alters the
rendered heading fails a test instead of passing unnoticed.

Verified: cargo fmt --check; clippy -D warnings on rustynes-frontend
(all targets); the cli unit tests, 19 passed, 0 failed; grep finds no
line that is exactly seven `=` left in cli.rs.

The bookkeeping for what v3.5.0 has settled so far, so the plan, the
ticket list and the MiSTer task board say what was decided rather than
leaving it in the integration notes.

- ROADMAP: mints T-MISTER-VRC7-OPLL (slot v3.8.0, backlog FB-12). Mapper
  85 ships in v3.5.0 with banking, WRAM and IRQ, off-die only, and
  silent: the public pages do not determine the modulation depth, the
  envelope steps, the table resolution and DAC curve, the tremolo depth,
  the LFO shapes, the key-on reset or the percussive release. The
  oracle's opll.rs is Provenance-headered (D15), so the ticket restates
  the escalation order: rungs 1-3 first, rung 4 only through an ADR 0037
  amendment naming the maintainer.
- v3.8.0 plan: row 9 for it, gated by an audio comparison with the
  oracle's VRC7 output, a caught mutant and the off-die budget; sprint
  3.8-S3 now covers rows 6-9.
- v3.5.0 plan: sprint status (S1 and S2 done with their merge commits, S3
  in progress) and a "Decisions and deferrals" section: the narrow Lite
  tier (Lite keeps its v3.4.x boards, every new board off-die only,
  enforced by offdie_only() and tier-gate in the sibling), the OPLL
  deferral, the Miracle Piano left unmodelled (no oracle model, and its
  page too thin to gate), the Power Pad recorded as derived from Mesen2
  (4c1fde1), and the MiSTer save-state break (new layout fingerprint;
  the Controllers option moved to status bits 23:21).
- mister/TASKS.md: T-MISTER-SS-ABANDON-STATES and T-MISTER-RTL-MUTANT-RUNS
  ticked against sibling 0605802, with what was measured there: case 9d
  red against the v3.4.1 engine first, its first version blind to mutant
  R10b (the gate stopped logging the DDR at `done`), and all 13 rows of
  `make -C tb mutants` CAUGHT after the fix.
- AGENTS.md "Where things live": four crates were missing from the list,
  rustynes-gamedb, rustynes-probe, rustynes-mcp (new in v3.5.0) and
  rustynes-cosim (noted as outside the workspace, which clippy --workspace
  does not reach).

Verified: markdownlint (the pinned pre-commit hook) on all five files;
release_state_prose_audit, contribution_checklist_audit,
release_anchor_audit, feature_flag_audit and provenance_record_audit, 52
passed, 0 failed. The two plan claims about the sibling (how tier-gate
decides; the Miracle Piano page's wording) were checked against the
sibling's commit df830ec and rtl/fc_periph.sv before committing.

The MiSTer core's v3.5.0 work lives in the sibling repository, but this
CHANGELOG is where every user-visible change is recorded (v3.4.1 did the
same), so [Unreleased] gains the sibling's merged work so far:

- Breaking: a v3.4.x MiSTer save state is refused on both builds (the
  layout fingerprint moved: on the die 0CF5891F / 4,097 bits, off the die
  FD9917DA / 4,319 bits on the integration branch before MMC5 merges, so
  that figure will move once more), and the OSD's Controllers option moved
  to status bits 23:21 (an older config reads as Gamepads).
- Added: the Lite tier (RustyNES_Lite keeps its v3.4.x boards, every new
  board is off-die only, checked by tier-gate); the Bandai FCG boards, the
  VRC6, the Namco 163 and the VRC7's banking/WRAM/IRQ; the Famicom
  peripherals (FB-11); `make -C tb mutants` (13 of 13 rows caught,
  counted from tb/ss_mutations.json rather than taken from prose).
- Fixed: a save interrupted by a cartridge change before its first word
  keeps the slot's earlier state (T-MISTER-SS-ABANDON-STATES).
- Not changed: the VRC7 is silent (T-MISTER-VRC7-OPLL, v3.8.0), the Namco
  163 does not answer a CHR-ROM page as a nametable, no Miracle Piano.

MMC5, still being built, gets its entry when it merges. Every statement
was checked against the sibling's commits (9bce9bb, 0605802, df830ec,
116f93d, 064efba) and rtl/emu.sv's option string. markdownlint clean.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

Releases RustyNES v3.5.0 ("Chorus"), introducing .rnm format 7 with per-frame ExtraInput recording, the MMC5 PPU-read scanline detector (EMULATION_EPOCH = 6, MMC5 snapshot v7), Lua WebSocket and OS-backed shared memory, the rustynes-mcp headless MCP server, speedrun auto-timing with the RNESMEM1 shared-memory export, rustynes dump-check, desktop/web/mobile frontend features (A/V sync offset, .rnbundle multi-disk bundles, peripheral key rebinding, web drag-and-drop and DualSystem canvas, unified mobile relay URL validation), and hosted TURN validation updates.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • observe.rs and session.rs: nametable_text is always invoked with hardcoded nametable 0 (observe::nametable_text(&mut self.nes, 0)), even when the game is scrolled into nametables 1–3 (p.ctrl & 3 != 0). Consider selecting the active base nametable from PPUCTRL ((p.ctrl & 3) as usize) or exposing an optional nametable index on ObserveArgs.
  • dump_check.rs: In XmlScanner::next, <!DOCTYPE ...> declarations are skipped by advancing to the first '>'. Standard Logiqx/No-Intro DAT files frequently embed an inline internal DTD subset (<!DOCTYPE datafile [ <!ELEMENT ...> ... ]>); stopping at the first '>' inside [...] leaves the internal declarations to be scanned as top-level tags. When '[' appears before '>' in a <!DOCTYPE header, advancing past "]>" avoids scanning internal DTD elements.
  • bundle.rs: read_rom_or_bundle enforces read_bounded (MAX_IMAGE_BYTES) for .rnbundle slots, but falls back to an unbounded std::fs::read(path) for standalone ROM paths. Applying a bounded read (such as the 64 MiB cap in dump_check.rs) on the non-bundle path as well would prevent unbounded allocation if a user passes a large non-ROM file.
  • wasm_file.rs: In read_file_bytes, if reader.read_as_array_buffer(file) returns Err, the Closure::once_into_js assigned to onloadend is never invoked or detached, leaving a reference cycle between reader and reader_for_cb. Calling reader.set_onloadend(None) in the Err branch releases the closure immediately.

Nitpicks

  • session.rs: Passing duplicate entries in ObserveArgs::layers (e.g. ["frame", "frame"]) re-encodes the PNG and appends duplicate text blocks; deduplicating layers before iteration avoids redundant work.
  • speedrun.rs: SplitsDefinition::parse silently overwrites start or reset when a .rnsplits file contains duplicate start = or reset = directives; returning SplitsError on duplicates would surface copy-paste mistakes in split files.

This PR cuts the v3.5.0 "Chorus" release (EMULATION_EPOCH = 6), adding the rustynes-mcp headless MCP server, speedrun/LiveSplit/shared-memory and TAS/Lua/debugger tooling, a --verify-dump CLI checker, MMC5 scanline IRQ timing and Phase F3b MiSTer mapper parity, and hosted TURN/workflow hardening.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • ws_thread in script_host.rs: ws_connect can block for up to WS_CONNECT_TIMEOUT (10 s). If the Lua script calls comm.ws_close() or opens a replacement socket while the handshake is in flight, ws_thread unconditionally pushes CommResult::WsState with open: true at line 567 before polling out_rx, emitting a spurious open state for an already-cancelled connection before closing on the first loop iteration. Check out_rx.try_recv() for WsOut::Close or TryRecvError::Disconnected before emitting open: true.
  • Trigger::evaluate in speedrun.rs: each condition calls Operand::value on left and right (lines 568–569) and then immediately calls Operand::advance on left and right (lines 585–586), performing two identical read_mem bus peeks per memory operand every frame. Returning or caching the raw sample during evaluation to update prev/prior avoids doubling the per-frame reads.
  • read_file_once in wasm_file.rs: reader.set_onloadend(Some(...)) is registered at line 42 before reader.read_as_array_buffer(file) at line 43. If read_as_array_buffer returns Err(_), onloadend never fires to take slot and clear the handler, leaking the Rc<RefCell<Option<Closure<...>>>> reference cycle. Clear reader.set_onloadend(None) and slot.borrow_mut().take() in the error branch before returning false.

Nitpicks

  • Host::pause in host.rs: locks self.inner.session at line 135 to call Session::set_running, drops the guard, and immediately re-locks self.inner.session at line 139 to read s.nes().frame(). Holding the single guard across both lines avoids the redundant lock acquisition.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

This PR cuts the v3.5.0 "Chorus" release, adding the rustynes-mcp stdio MCP server, the rustynes-tas speedrun/splits crate with --memif shared-memory export and LiveSplit Server TCP output, mobile RetroAchievements + netplay client parity, peripheral keyboard rebinding, the MiSTer F3b board/SavestateUI sync, and release documentation.

Blocking issues

  • Unloading a ROM in a --memif session leaves FLAG_GAME and stale game/timer state published in shared memory (speedrun_host.rs, emu.rs, memory-export-interface.md): SpeedrunHost::no_game is implemented to clear self.rom and self.timer and call MemIfExporter::publish_empty, but EmuCore::clear_rom never calls self.speedrun.no_game(). Once a ROM has been loaded, closing or unloading it leaves bit 0 of flags (FLAG_GAME) set and the previous game's SHA-256, work RAM, and timer fields live in the shared-memory block, violating the documented contract in memory-export-interface.md.

Suggestions

  • Add an explicit Ordering::Acquire fence before the trailing sequence read in DocReader::snapshot (memif.rs): DocReader::snapshot performs self.0.atomic_u32(0x14).load(Ordering::Acquire), copies the payload with non-atomic volatile reads via self.0.read_bytes(0, &mut b), and then checks self.0.atomic_u32(0x14).load(Ordering::Acquire) == s1. An Acquire load prevents later reads from floating before it, but does not prevent earlier non-atomic payload reads in read_bytes from being reordered after the second sequence load on weakly ordered architectures (e.g. AArch64). Insert std::sync::atomic::fence(Ordering::Acquire) between read_bytes and the second seq load, matching mmf_read_region.
  • Clear latched peripheral state on key rebind (input.rs, app.rs): When rebinding or clearing a FamilyKey, PowerPad, or Microphone binding via InputState::reload_bindings while the previously bound key is held, self.family_keyboard, self.power_pad, and self.microphone are not reset, so releasing the old key no longer matches the slot and leaves the bit stuck until reset.
  • Clarify or guard Session::lua_eval while the MCP background runner is active (session.rs, session.rs): Unlike step_frames, step_instructions, write_ram, reset, and fork_adopt, Session::lua_eval does not call self.refuse_while_running("lua_eval"). Running a Lua snippet while running is true takes two full emulator snapshots (before and after) and executes up to DEFAULT_INSTRUCTION_BUDGET VM instructions while holding the session mutex between background frames; either guard it with refuse_while_running or document that live mid-run evaluation is intentional.

Nitpicks

  • SpeedrunHost::no_game has no caller outside tests once wired into EmuCore::clear_rom; add a regression test covering ROM unload after on_rom_loaded with --memif active.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

This PR cuts the v3.5.0 "Chorus" release, adding full-peripheral movie recording (.rnm format 7, .rnmproj v2, attestation v3), Lua WebSocket and OS shared-memory support, the rustynes-mcp headless MCP server, speedrun auto-timing with a shared-memory export interface (--splits / --memif), the rustynes dump-check ROM verification tool, desktop/web frontend additions (.rnbundle manifests, A/V sync offset, peripheral key rebinding, web drag-and-drop, and wasm-canvas VsDualSystem support), the re-enabled hosted TURN relay with stricter ICE sanitization, and the cycle-stepped MMC5 scanline detector (EMULATION_EPOCH 6, MMC5 save-state v7).

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • Seqlock reader ordering in test helpers (memif.rs and script_host.rs): In DocReader::snapshot (memif.rs:285-286) and read_region_by_name (script_host.rs:1070-1071), the reader copies the non-atomic payload with read_bytes and then checks atomic_u32(...).load(Ordering::Acquire) == s1 without a preceding std::sync::atomic::fence(Ordering::Acquire). Under the Rust/C++11 memory model, a trailing load(Ordering::Acquire) only prevents subsequent memory operations from being reordered before it; it does not prevent the preceding non-atomic read_bytes from being reordered after the second sequence check on weakly ordered architectures (such as ARM64). Both helpers should issue std::sync::atomic::fence(Ordering::Acquire) after read_bytes and before the second seq.load(Ordering::Relaxed), matching production mmf_read_region.
  • Unescaped XML entities in nes20db.xml game title comments (dump_check.rs and dump_check.rs): Nes20Db::parse extracts the game title from the <!-- ... --> comment preceding each <game> element, but XmlScanner::next_item only runs unescape on attribute values (XmlItem::Open), not XmlItem::Comment. Titles in nes20db.xml comments containing XML entities (such as &amp; or &apos;) will remain escaped in Nes20Match::Listed::name and in the human/JSON reports.
  • Unbounded file reads in CLI/bundle paths (speedrun_cli.rs, speedrun_host.rs, and bundle.rs): speedrun_cli::run_inner reads --rom and --bios with raw std::fs::read, SpeedrunHost::new reads --splits with raw std::fs::read_to_string, and read_rom_or_bundle reads non-bundle paths with std::fs::read while bounding bundle slots via read_bounded(..., MAX_IMAGE_BYTES). Applying bounded reads (as dump_check.rs and rustynes-mcp do) would prevent unbounded memory allocation if pointed at an oversized file or FIFO.
  • lua_eval snapshot overhead while real-time runner is active (session.rs): Unlike mutating tools, lua_eval is permitted while the real-time runner thread is active (running == true), holding the Session mutex while taking two full self.nes.snapshot() copies and executing up to DEFAULT_INSTRUCTION_BUDGET Lua VM instructions. Calling lua_eval during a real-time run will stall the runner thread's 60 Hz frame pacing; consider either requiring pause before lua_eval or skipping the post-execution self.nes.snapshot() != before check in release builds (e.g. debug_assert_eq!) once the read-only LuaHost invariant is covered by tests.

Nitpicks

  • speedrun.rs (Trigger::evaluate): Each condition evaluates cond.left.value(read) / cond.right.value(read) in the first loop and then re-reads the same memory addresses in cond.left.advance(read) / cond.right.advance(read) in the second loop; passing the already-sampled values to advance would avoid duplicate memory reads per frame.
  • speedrun.rs (SplitsDefinition::parse): Duplicate start or reset keys are rejected with SplitsParseError::DuplicateKey, whereas duplicate game or category keys silently overwrite the earlier value.

  • Windows vs. POSIX SharedRegion::len divergence in sys::create: On Windows, when SharedRegion::create creates a fresh mapping (!existed), it stores the caller's unrounded len, whereas SharedRegion::open (and create when existed is true) sets len to info.RegionSize from VirtualQuery, which CreateFileMappingW rounds up to the OS page size. As a result, writer.len() and reader.len() differ on Windows for any non-page-multiple size (unlike POSIX, where ftruncate sets the exact byte length). Recording size consistently or storing a small header when exact byte length matters to SharedRegion callers directly (outside MmfStore) would make the cross-platform semantics uniform.
  • Resizing an existing POSIX shm object in sys::create: When shm_open(..., O_CREAT | O_EXCL) returns EEXIST and falls back to opening the existing object (created = false), sys::create calls ftruncate(fd, want) if have < len. On macOS (XNU), ftruncate only succeeds once on a newly created POSIX shared-memory segment and returns EINVAL on subsequent calls; on Linux, growing an existing segment in place can race with concurrent readers. Returning a clear capacity error when !created && have < len (matching the Windows branch at shm.rs:744-750) or unlinking before recreating would avoid platform-specific failures.
  • Incomplete PPU scroll-latch (t/w) tracking in PpuAddrModel::access: PpuAddrModel::access flips second_write on $2005 (PPUSCROLL) writes ((5, true) => self.second_write = !self.second_write), but never updates t_hi on $2000 (PPUCTRL) or $2005 writes. If a ROM performs an odd number of $2005 writes before writing $2006, the next $2006 write is treated as the second write and latches vram_addr using a stale t_hi, which can misclassify whether subsequent $2007 writes hit $0000-$1FFF (CHR-RAM).
  • Unbounded std::fs::read on non-bundle ROM paths and auto-discovered soft patches in read_rom_or_bundle and app.rs: bundle::read_rom_or_bundle bounds each .nesbundle slot with read_bounded (MAX_IMAGE_BYTES), and dump_check::check_path caps reads at MAX_ROM_FILE_BYTES, but the non-bundle fallback at bundle.rs:391 and the sibling .bps/.ups/.ips patch reads in App::load_startup_rom and App::load_rom_at still call unbounded std::fs::read. Using read_bounded there as well would prevent accidental large-file allocations.

Nitpicks

  • device_keys_ui in input_rebind_panel.rs: Calls DeviceKeyConfig::normalized (cloning and reassigning both Vec<String>s) and allocates slots: Vec<Slot> on every GUI frame even when power_pad.len() == 12, family_basic_keyboard.len() == 72, and both collapsing headers are closed.
  • XmlScanner::next in dump_check.rs: Skipping <!DOCTYPE ...> via tag.find('>') stops at the first > inside an inline <!DOCTYPE datafile [ <!ELEMENT ...> ]> internal subset rather than the closing ]>; harmless for standard No-Intro/TOSEC DATs because <game>/<machine> tags follow afterwards, but easy to handle cleanly if internal subsets are encountered.

Suggestions

  • Contradictory memif address-mapping specification after the RetroAchievements $6000-$7FFF flat-address fix: This PR updated crates/rustynes-cheevos/src/memory.rs, crates/rustynes-core/src/speedrun.rs, and the condition-grammar section of docs/memory-export-interface.md so that RetroAchievements NES addresses map 1:1 to CPU-bus addresses ($6000-$7FFF is 0x6000-0x7FFF, not 0x0800-0x27FF). However, docs/memory-export-interface.md, docs/adr/0047-a-published-memory-export-block-for-speedrun-tools.md, and crates/rustynes-frontend/src/memif.rs (as well as the test comment at crates/rustynes-frontend/src/memif.rs) still state that the memif block lays out the RetroAchievements flat space at 0x0100 + x for both RAM windows (x < 0x2800). Because cartridge RAM is at 0x0900..0x2900 in the 0x2B00-byte memif block while RA conditions address $6000-$7FFF at 0x6000..=0x7FFF, indexing the block at 0x0100 + x for cartridge RAM is out of bounds (0x6100..=0x80FF); the memif offset for $6000-$7FFF is 0x0900 + (x - 0x6000).
  • write_ram is not refused while the real-time MCP runner is active: crates/rustynes-mcp/src/host.rs documents that timeline-mutating tools are refused while the real-time runner is active (run mode), and step_frames, step_instructions, reset, and fork_adopt all guard with Session::refuse_while_running. Session::write_ram mutates console RAM and resets self.journal = Journal::started(&self.nes) without calling self.refuse_while_running("write_ram")?, which will silently wipe the active recording journal if called during a real-time run.
  • Unmasked vs_coin in ExtraInput::attestation_bytes: encode_events masks c.vs_coin & 0b11 when encoding .rnm format 7 streams, and DeviceInput::payload masks all device bitfields, but ExtraInput::attestation_bytes writes out[at + 1] = e.vs_coin; without & 0b11. If an ExtraInput is constructed in memory with bits 2..=7 set on vs_coin, the in-memory movie attestation digest will not match the digest after saving and reloading the .rnm file.
  • Check segment ownership before polling size in scripts/memif/reference_splitter.py: open_block loops waiting for shm.size >= LAYOUT_SIZE before returning shm to main, where owned_by_me is checked. If another local user squats on the shared-memory name with a 0-byte or undersized segment, open_block spins for the full 30-second timeout and exits with code 2 ("no block named ...") instead of immediately failing the ownership/mode check with exit code 1.

Nitpicks

  • crates/rustynes-core/src/dump_check.rs: parse_hex and xml_unescape duplicate helpers of the same name in crates/rustynes-core/src/game_db.rs; consider sharing them within rustynes-core.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

This PR cuts release v3.5.0 ("Chorus"), adding .rnm format 7 non-controller movie inputs, Lua WebSockets and OS shared memory, the rustynes-mcp headless MCP server, speedrun auto-timing with a shared-memory export block (--memif), rustynes dump-check, desktop/web frontend features, the MMC5 scanline IRQ fix (EMULATION_EPOCH 6), and MiSTer Phase F3b off-die boards and peripherals.

Blocking issues

  • Race between Host::resume and Host::pause in host.rs can leave a background runner active after pause or spawn duplicate runner threads. resume flips self.inner.running to true via compare_exchange before locking session or runner, and pause flips self.inner.running to false via swap before locking runner (in join_runner) or session.
    1. If pause executes after resume passes compare_exchange(false, true) but before resume stores Some(handle) in self.inner.runner, pause sees runner == None, marks session.set_running(false), and returns "running": false; resume then marks session.set_running(true) and spawns mcp-realtime.
    2. If a second resume arrives after pause resets running to false, its compare_exchange(false, true) also succeeds while the first resume is still between compare_exchange and thread::Builder::spawn. Both calls then spawn mcp-realtime threads that see running == true, stepping the same Session concurrently and overwriting the first JoinHandle in self.inner.runner.
    • Guard the running transition, session.set_running(...), and thread spawn/join under self.inner.runner (or a single lifecycle mutex).

Suggestions

  • Use bounded reads instead of metadata().len() pre-checks in read_capped and main. Both check std::fs::metadata(path)?.len() > MAX_*_BYTES and then call std::fs::read(path). As noted in bundle::read_bounded in this PR, a FIFO or device node (such as /dev/zero) reports len() == 0 and streams without bound in std::fs::read. Use File::open(path)?.take(limit + 1).read_to_end(...) in both places.
  • Handle or clear break_hit in Session::step_instructions. step_instructions calls self.nes.step_instruction() in a loop without checking self.nes.take_break_hit(). If an instruction crosses an execution breakpoint, step_instructions neither stops at the breakpoint nor clears break_hit, leaving a stale latch set on Nes.
  • Continue reading the socket during close when inbound bytes are over budget in ws_thread. When closing_since.is_some() and pending.load() > WS_INBOUND_BUDGET, the loop sleeps and continues before socket.read(), so it never reads the peer's close frame and always stalls for the full 10-second WS_CONNECT_TIMEOUT before reporting open: false. When closing_since.is_some(), read and discard incoming data frames so the close handshake can finish immediately.

Nitpicks

  • reference_splitter.py: On POSIX, if open_block opens the segment in the brief window between the producer's shm_open(..., O_CREAT | O_EXCL, 0o600) and ftruncate/write_header, check_posix_owner passes, SharedMemory maps a 0-byte region, and snapshot's buf[:LAYOUT_SIZE] slice returns fewer than LAYOUT_SIZE bytes, causing struct.unpack_from in decode to raise struct.error. Check shm.size >= LAYOUT_SIZE before returning from open_block.

This PR cuts the v3.5.0 "Chorus" release, adding the rustynes-mcp headless MCP server, .rnm format 7 full-peripheral movie recording, the built-in speedrun timer and LiveSplit Server / Auto Splitting Runtime integration, OS-named shared-memory regions and Lua emu.writeMMF / emu.readMMF, cartridge-switch .rnbundle manifests, FDS .qd reading/saving, and the 3.5.0 workspace version bump.

Blocking issues

  • Unfinished TODO placeholders in the release notes override (.github/release-notes/v3.5.0.md): Lines 52, 54, and 60 still contain literal TODO placeholders (TODO stems and artifacts reproduce byte for byte, New bitstreams: TODO., MiSTer: TODO). Because .github/workflows/release-auto.yml prefers .github/release-notes/vX.Y.Z.md over CHANGELOG.md when publishing the GitHub Release on main, merging this file as-is will publish incomplete release notes.
  • Growing a named shared-memory region while a reader has it open fails on Windows (script_host.rs, shm.rs): When MmfStore::write receives a payload larger than the existing region, it removes old from self.regions (dropping the writer's view/handle) and immediately calls SharedRegion::create under the same name. On POSIX, shm_unlink detaches the name even while a reader still holds its mapping. On Windows, there is no unlink: the kernel keeps Local\<name> alive until every handle and mapped view across all processes is closed. When an external reader (or the unit test a_larger_write_replaces_the_region in script_host.rs, which holds reader open across store.write("grow", &[2u8; 10_000]).unwrap()) still holds the first mapping open, CreateFileMappingW returns the existing 4096-byte object with ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS, and SharedRegion::create returns Err(InvalidData) ("region ... exists with 4096 bytes, 12288 needed"), failing both the resize and the unit test on Windows.

Suggestions

  • Stale Prior (p) operand value on the first frame after reset_history (speedrun.rs): Operand::reset_history clears *delta = None but leaves *prior untouched. Because Trigger::evaluate calls Operand::value before Operand::advance re-seeds *prior = now on delta.is_none(), a Modifier::Prior operand in a start condition evaluated on the frame immediately following a state load or reset while Idle will read the stale pre-reset prior instead of now. Have Modifier::Prior return if delta.is_some() { *prior } else { now } in Operand::value (matching Modifier::Delta).
  • Same-stem soft-patching checks the .rnbundle path instead of the active slot's ROM path (app.rs, app.rs): In both load_startup_rom and load_rom_at, patch::apply_same_stem_patch(path, &bytes) is passed path (which is the .rnbundle manifest path when loading a bundle) rather than loaded_bundle.slots[loaded_bundle.active_slot].path. That causes a <bundle>.ips/.bps/.ups file to be applied to every slot in the bundle while per-cartridge <slot_rom>.ips patches are ignored.

Nitpicks

  • Outdated "Not done" note on .rnm non-controller input (docs/mcp-server.md, 0048-an-mcp-server-over-the-headless-core.md): Both documents state that .rnm does not carry Zapper, microphone, Vs. coins, or FDS disk events until T-MOVIE-INPUT-STREAM, which lands in this same PR as .rnm format 7 (only the MCP tool schema itself remains controller-only).

The MMC5 IRQ fact in "Architecture — load-bearing facts" is now stale.

Line 174 says MMC5 "uses different scanline detection via notify_scanline_start / notify_vblank". This PR replaces that model. The MMC5 now detects scanlines from PPU reads:

  • PpuBus::notify_ppu_read reports every read.
  • The core forwards it only to a board whose Mapper::snoops_ppu_reads is true.

CHANGELOG.md lines 275-296 and the release notes describe this. An agent that follows this paragraph would look for the MMC5 IRQ in the wrong hooks. The path instruction says: "Flag documentation that drifts from the code it describes."

Proposed fix
-**Mapper IRQ logic lives in the mapper, not the PPU.** The PPU calls `Mapper::notify_a12(level)` on every A12 transition; the mapper internally filters (MMC3's "3 falling edges of M2" lives in the MMC3 impl). MMC5 uses different scanline detection via `notify_scanline_start` / `notify_vblank`. VRC2/4/6, Sunsoft FME-7, and Namco 163 tick on `notify_cpu_cycle()`.

Update the MMC5 IRQ description in “Architecture — load-bearing facts” to

PpuBus::notify_ppu_read and forwarded only when Mapper::snoops_ppu_reads is
true. Remove the stale notify_scanline_start / notify_vblank description and

crates/rustynes-mappers/src/m005_mmc5.rs:1474-1482
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Update the ppu_read comment, which now contradicts the detector.

The comment says MMC5 "scanline detection runs from notify_scanline_start / notify_vblank". Since this change, detection runs from notify_ppu_read through the read-watching detector. notify_scanline_start / notify_vblank now only open and close render_window.

The repository treats code and docs as one spec, so this comment now misstates where the IRQ source lives. Replace the first sentence. State that CHR / nametable reads here have no side effect, and that the bus reports scanline detection reads separately through snoops_ppu_reads / notify_ppu_read.

Proposed comment fix
- // MMC5 CHR / nametable reads have no side effect here: its scanline
-        // detection runs from `notify_scanline_start` / `notify_vblank`. A
-        // v3.2.0 import moved a nametable-snoop detector into this method,
- // but the lockstep bus never routes nametable fetches through

Update the comment in `ppu_read` to state that CHR and nametable reads have no
side effect there, and that scanline detection reads are reported separately
through `snoops_ppu_reads` and `notify_ppu_read`; clarify that
`notify_scanline_start` and `notify_vblank` only manage `render_window`.

Copilot (3), Antigravity (2 blocking, 3 more) and CodeRabbit (17 inline,
4 outside the diff) reviewed the v3.5.0 release PR. Every finding was
checked against the code before it was acted on; all of them held, one
was wider than reported, and one led to an older defect.

The older defect: RetroAchievements reads on the desktop and mobile apps.
CodeRabbit flagged the speedrun timer's ra_flat_to_cpu, which put
cartridge RAM at RA 0x0800-0x27FF. That mapping was a copy of
rustynes-cheevos's ra_addr_to_nes, which has done the same since it was
written. The vendored rcheevos region table (consoleinfo.c,
_rc_memory_regions_nes) puts every NES region at its CPU address: system
RAM at 0x0000 with mirrors to 0x1FFF, cartridge RAM at 0x6000, ROM at
0x8000. So on the native apps a condition on a 0x6xxx address read
nothing, and one on a RAM mirror read cartridge RAM. The browser bridge
(ra_glue.js, identity over $0000-$FFFF) and the libretro core's memory
map (PRG-RAM descriptor at 0x6000) were already right. Both mappings are
now the identity over 0x0000..=0xFFFF; the readers they serve are
Nes::cpu_bus_peek / debug_peek_cpu, which have no side effects, so
reading a register or ROM address changes nothing. The speedrun docs
claimed "a test in the frontend pins it to the cheevos crate's"; no such
test existed. It does now (retroachievements builds), over 0..=0x10010.

The wider one: Copilot found the speedrun runner never drains audio
(about 800 samples a frame, ~600 MiB for its default hour). Checking how
other headless runners drop audio found rustynes-mcp's drop_audio
draining into a ONE-sample buffer, on the belief, stated by
Nes::drain_audio_into's own doc comment, that the excess is dropped.
BlipBuf::drain keeps the remainder, so every MCP session and fork grew by
a frame's audio per frame. Both now loop a 1,024-sample sink until a
drain comes back short; the core doc comment now says what the code does.

Fixes, each with the test that would catch its return:

- speedrun --json: a finished run skipped the CLI's error-propagating
  write (the host only logs a failed one), so an unwritable path exited 0
  with no file. Written for both outcomes now. Note the trap: write_atomic
  creates missing parent directories, so the reviewer's "missing
  directory" case cannot fail; the test uses a regular file as the parent.
  Mutation (restore the !finished guard): caught.
- speedrun exit status: an unfinished run exited 2, clap's usage error.
  Now 5 (3 is verify's, 4 dump-check's); cli help and both docs updated.
- speedrun `p` (prior): with no history (first frame, or after a
  discontinuity cleared it) it returned the stored prior, 0 or a pre-jump
  value, so `p` could report a change that never happened. Now the
  current value stands in, as `d` already did. Mutation: caught.
- Windows shared memory: growing a region while another program has it
  open met the old object (Windows keeps a mapping until every handle
  closes), refused it, and had already dropped the store's mapping, so
  the name fell out of the store. The store now reopens the surviving
  object, re-validates its header, keeps it at its old capacity and
  refuses the write with the reason. The POSIX test stays; a Windows test
  asserts the refusal, the valid header, the old data and that a fitting
  write still lands. Only Windows CI can run it.
- MCP resume: load-then-store let two concurrent calls start two
  runners. Claimed with one compare_exchange; a failed thread spawn now
  releases the claim (it used to leave both flags set). Test: 25 rounds
  of 8 threads behind a barrier, exactly one start; the old code fails it.
- Bundles: same-stem soft patches were looked up beside the .rnbundle
  manifest, so <bundle>.ips patched every cartridge slot and <slot>.ips
  was never found. bundle::patch_base picks the slot image (none for an
  FDS set, which has no single file). read_bounded now bounds the read,
  not the metadata (/dev/zero reports 0 bytes; tested on unix, not
  mutation-run since the old read would exhaust memory).
  manifest_text_for returns a validated Result instead of writing an
  empty manifest over the user's file. Close ROM clears the bundle.
- Device keys: a key parse_keycode cannot resolve is refused for the
  microphone, Power Pad and keyboard slots instead of being reported as
  bound and then silently unbound.
- Browser: every FileReader callback was forgotten and held its reader's
  result, so each opened ROM or movie stayed in memory; one self-freeing
  read on loadend (wasm_file::read_file_once) serves all seven sites. The
  canvas embed starts Web Audio inside the pick/drop gesture, and ends a
  movie session before a Vs. DualSystem cabinet replaces the console
  (every movie hotkey refuses on a cabinet). Verified by wasm32 clippy of
  both builds; not exercised in a browser on this machine.
- reference_splitter.py: --timeout now bounds the wait for a consistent
  snapshot (an odd sequence counter left by a dead producer looped
  forever); exercised with an odd counter.
- Provenance: input_device.rs gains the SPDX line and site pointers on
  the derived Power Pad symbols (provenance_record_audit passes).

Docs: release notes lose their TODOs (Auto Release publishes the file
verbatim; the MiSTer pin and bitstream lines now point at the sibling's
notes, which exist only after this merges), AGENTS.md's and m005's MMC5
detection facts, SECURITY.md's supported-versions table, the ADR index
range (0001-0048), ADR 0016's and ADR 0048's follow-up claims,
docs/mcp-server.md, docs/frontend.md's coin exception (already fixed in
this release; ADR 0044 was right), the browser FDS-BIOS claim, the hosted
README's TURN expiry step, scripting.md's Windows limit, the user guide's
bundle patching, and CHANGELOG / release-notes Fixed entries for the two
defects older than this release.

Verified: cargo fmt --check; clippy --workspace --all-targets and with
scripting, scripting+hd-pack, retroachievements and full; both wasm32
builds; cargo doc -D warnings; rustynes-cosim clippy; cargo test
--workspace --features test-roms 3,675 passed, 0 failed, 14 ignored;
rustynes-frontend --features full 839/0/2; markdownlint --all-files. The
commercial suites were not re-run: nothing here touches emulation.

Review round 1, answered in 14e6ff63. Every inline thread has its own reply. The findings below were posted outside threads.

CodeRabbit, outside the diff (4), all fixed:

  • AGENTS.md (the "load-bearing facts" MMC5 line): it now says the MMC5 detects scanlines from PPU reads through notify_ppu_read, forwarded only when snoops_ppu_reads is true. notify_scanline_start / notify_vblank now only bound its render window.
  • SECURITY.md: 3.5.x is the current line, and 3.4.x is Partial.
  • docs/DOCUMENTATION_INDEX.md: the ADR range is 0001-0048, with 0046 (the netplay session secret), 0047 (the memory-export block) and 0048 (the MCP server) added.
  • m005_mmc5.rs ppu_read: the comment says that detection runs through notify_ppu_read, not this method.

Antigravity, each finding checked against the code:

  • Blocking, release-notes TODOs: fixed. The lines are now true at merge and point to the sibling's notes for the pin and bitstream figures.
  • Blocking, Windows shared-memory growth: confirmed. With a reader attached, the create met the old object, and the store had already dropped its mapping. The store now reopens the surviving object, revalidates its header, keeps the old capacity and data, and refuses the write with the reason. A write that fits still lands. A cfg(windows) test asserts all of that; only Windows CI can run it. docs/scripting.md states the limit.
  • Stale p after reset_history: fixed as suggested. A first-frame case is covered too, and a mutation of the fix fails the test.
  • Bundle patches looked up beside the manifest: confirmed. Each slot switch loads through the manifest, so <bundle>.ips patched every cartridge. bundle::patch_base now selects the slot image, and none for an FDS set. The user guide says so.
  • Stale "not done" notes in docs/mcp-server.md and ADR 0048: fixed.
  • A note for whoever reads that review later: its opening summary names a "LiveSplit Server / Auto Splitting Runtime integration" and FDS .qd reading and saving. This PR adds neither. The memory-export block is a fixed-layout shared-memory region, and .qd is only accepted where the FDS loader already accepted it.

Verification on 14e6ff63:

  • fmt and clippy are clean: workspace, scripting, scripting,hd-pack, retroachievements, full, both wasm32 builds, and the cosim crate.
  • cargo doc -D warnings is clean.
  • cargo test --workspace --features test-roms: 3,675 passed, 0 failed, 14 ignored.
  • rustynes-frontend --features full: 839 passed, 0 failed, 2 ignored.
  • markdownlint passes.

🟡 Minor · Bound the outbound WebSocket queue. · script_host.rs:877-913

crates/rustynes-frontend/src/script_host.rs:877-913
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Bound the outbound WebSocket queue.

WsLink::spawn creates an unbounded channel::<WsOut>(). The worker moves every CommCmd::WsSend from the bounded job queue (COMM_QUEUE_DEPTH) into this channel without waiting. The job queue therefore stops limiting memory for WebSocket sends.

The socket thread drains the channel only after the handshake finishes (up to WS_CONNECT_TIMEOUT). It also drains slowly when the peer stops reading, because a stalled write blocks for up to 10 s. A script that calls ws_send every frame in either state grows the queue without limit. NF-08 and NF-03 already bound the other script-driven queues for this reason.

Use a bounded sync_channel and drop a text message when the queue is full. This matches how the other fire-and-forget requests are handled.

ws_thread already treats TryRecvError::Disconnected as a close request. close can therefore drop the sender and not send WsOut::Close. A try_send of Close could be lost on a full queue.

+ // it has consumed the queued messages.
+        drop(self.out_tx);

Add const WS_OUT_QUEUE_DEPTH: usize = 256; next to the other WS_* constants. ws_thread must accept &Receiver<WsOut> from sync_channel unchanged.

🔵 Trivial · Refuse an impossible detector tail in load_state instead of… · m005_mmc5.rs:2204-2209

crates/rustynes-mappers/src/m005_mmc5.rs:2204-2209
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Refuse an impossible detector tail in load_state instead of clamping it.

Line 2205 clamps det_match_count to 2. Line 2207 clamps det_idle_cycles to 3. A v7 blob whose detector fields exceed the detector's own range is therefore accepted as valid.

scanline_counter is restored raw at Line 2157. Since v3.5.0 it can only hold 0..=239, because scanline_detected resets it at 240. A hand-edited 250 loads, then wraps through 256 values before the 240 reset can fire again. No panic results, but the state does not match any state the detector can produce.

The mapper guidelines require load_state to refuse such values with MapperError::Invalid. They do not allow silent repair. Validate these three fields after the length check and before any assignment.

Proposed validation
+        let tail = expected - DETECTOR_TAIL_LEN;
+        if data[tail + 2] > 2 || data[tail + 4] > 3 {
+            return Err(MapperError::Invalid(format!(
+                "MMC5 detector tail out of range: match={} idle={}",
+                data[tail + 2],
+                data[tail + 4]
+            )));
+        }

Add a matching check that the stored scanline_counter byte is at most 239.

As per coding guidelines: "load_state must refuse any value the board's own registers cannot produce ... Validate before assigning, and return MapperError::Invalid."

Comment thread crates/rustynes-mcp/src/host.rs
Antigravity's second round on #624 (one blocking finding, four more),
each checked against the code; four held, one did not.

- MCP resume vs pause (blocking, held). 14e6ff6's compare_exchange made
  two concurrent `resume`s safe against each other but not against
  `pause`: a pause landing between a resume's claim and its storing the
  runner handle found no runner to join and cleared the flag, so a
  second resume could claim it again while the first was still spawning,
  and two runners stepped one session, the first's handle overwritten.
  `resume` and `pause` now run under one lifecycle mutex (the runner
  thread never takes it, so `pause` may join while holding it). Test:
  8 threads storming resume/pause for 10 rounds, then the machine must be
  stopped and its frame count still; with the locks removed it ran past
  the test's 60 s deadline (pause serially joining runners it was handed
  after the race) and failed. The deadline is there so that failure is a
  failure, not a hung test.
- Bounded reads (held). dump_check::read_capped and rustynes-mcp's ROM
  load trusted metadata().len(), which is 0 for /dev/zero or a FIFO, as
  bundle::read_bounded did before 14e6ff6. Both now take(limit + 1);
  dump-check has a /dev/zero test.
- WebSocket close under back-pressure (held). With the inbound budget
  full, the socket thread slept instead of reading, so after ws_close the
  peer's close frame sat behind unread data and every close waited out
  the 10 s timeout. While closing it now reads every frame and drops the
  data (scripting.md says so). Test: a server floods 8 MiB, the client
  closes undrained, the close must report within 5 s; the old
  back-pressure condition makes it take 10.02 s and fail. The first
  version of this test polled through drain_results, which hands bytes
  back to the budget and so released the very back-pressure under test;
  its mutant passed, which is how that was found. It reads the result
  channel directly now.
- reference_splitter.py (held): open_block waits for a full-size block
  (a POSIX attach between the producer's create and its ftruncate maps
  too few bytes). Exercised with a 4,096-byte and a full block.
- step_instructions leaving a stale break_hit (did not hold):
  Nes::break_hit is written only inside run_frame (nes.rs:866), never by
  step_instruction, so stepping cannot latch one. A step deliberately
  runs the requested count through breakpoints. No change.

Verified: cargo fmt --check; clippy --workspace --all-targets, and with
full, scripting and retroachievements; rustynes-mcp 20 passed, 0 failed;
rustynes-frontend --features full 841 passed, 0 failed, 2 ignored; the
release anchor, render and state-prose audits; ruff.

Antigravity round 2, answered in ccb636d2. I checked each finding against the code. Four held and one did not.

  • Blocking: resume vs pause (held). Both now run under one lifecycle mutex. The runner thread never takes that mutex, so pause can still join the runner while holding it. The new test, racing_resume_and_pause_leave_no_runner_behind, drives 8 threads storming resume and pause for 10 rounds. After the final pause, the frame count must stop moving. With the locks removed, the test fails at its 60 s deadline.
  • Bounded reads in dump_check::read_capped and the MCP ROM load (held). Both now use take(limit + 1). dump-check has a /dev/zero test.
  • WebSocket close under back-pressure (held). While closing, the socket thread now reads every frame and drops the data, so the peer's close frame is reached. a_close_over_the_inbound_budget_completes_promptly fails with the old condition: the close takes 10.02 s. docs/scripting.md says that messages arriving after ws_close are dropped.
  • reference_splitter.py (held). open_block now waits for a full-size block.
  • step_instructions leaving a stale break_hit (did not hold). Nes::break_hit is written only inside run_frame (nes.rs:866). step_instruction never latches it, so stepping cannot leave one set. Stepping deliberately runs the requested count through breakpoints, so nothing changed.

Keep entity decoding linear in unescape.

A value such as &&&&…&; makes each invalid entity rescan the remaining suffix with rest.find(';'), producing quadratic work for an untrusted attribute within the input cap.

Windows CI on #624 (run 39878137197, test (windows-latest)) failed one
test of 2,667: the_shells_ask_the_bridge_and_parse_nothing_themselves,
which this release added for T-MOBILE-RELAY-VALIDATE. It reads
Netplay.kt and NetplayModel.swift through include_str! and finds each
gate's end by "\n}\n" / "\n    }\n". A Windows checkout gives those files
CRLF line endings, so the end marker never matched and the helper
panicked with `end of "fun onlineNetplayConfigured(" not found`. Linux
and macOS check out LF, which is why nothing earlier saw it. Both
sources are normalised before the search. The same trap failed v3.4.1's
release_anchor_audit on Windows.

Also learned from that run, and recorded rather than fixed here: the
Windows test job builds no script-ipc, so 14e6ff6's cfg(windows) test
of the shared-memory grow recovery
(a_larger_write_with_a_reader_attached_is_refused_and_the_region_kept)
did not run on Windows CI. That path is reviewed and compiled for the
host only; it is unexercised on Windows. The MCP race tests did run
there and passed.

Verified: the test passes locally; cargo fmt --check.

Antigravity's third round on #624 (no blocking findings), the parts that
held and that this release would otherwise ship wrong.

- The memory-export block's documentation contradicted 14e6ff6. That
  commit corrected RetroAchievements' NES addresses to CPU addresses, but
  docs/memory-export-interface.md, ADR 0047 and memif.rs still said the
  block lays out "the RA flat space" with address x at 0x0100 + x. That
  held only under the old, wrong mapping; under the correct one cartridge
  RAM $6000 is at 0x0900, not 0x6100. The block's offsets did not move
  (layout version 1 is unchanged); the prose now gives the real rule,
  RAM x at 0x0100 + (x & 0x7FF) and cartridge RAM x at
  0x0900 + (x - 0x6000), and says what it used to claim. The memif test
  that read "RA 0x0803 is $6003" through 0x100 + 0x0800 now indexes
  0x0900 directly (the same byte; only its explanation was wrong).
- MCP write_ram was not refused during a real-time run, unlike every
  other timeline change, and it restarts the journal, so it cut the run's
  recording. Refused now; the real-time gate asserts it, and fails with
  the refusal removed.
- ExtraInput::attestation_bytes wrote vs_coin unmasked while the .rnm
  encoder masks it to the two acceptor bits and replay reads only those,
  so an in-memory value with stray high bits attested differently from
  its saved-and-reloaded self. Masked; the attestation test now checks a
  stray-bit value attests as its masked form. No real capture produces
  high bits, so no recorded attestation changes.
- reference_splitter.py returns a block another user owns at once, so
  main() refuses it (exit 1) instead of open_block waiting out the
  timeout on an undersized squatted name. Exercised with a 0644 block.

Not changed (recorded in the PR reply): the Windows/POSIX len rounding
and the POSIX ftruncate-on-existing notes (MmfStore unlinks before it
recreates and checks capacity itself), the dump-check PPU t/w model
(heuristic, documented as such), unbounded reads of ROMs and patches the
user picked, and the two nitpicks.

Verified: cargo fmt --check; clippy --workspace --all-targets and
rustynes-frontend --features full; cargo test --workspace 3,310 passed,
0 failed, 10 ignored; rustynes-frontend --features full 841/0; the
write_ram mutation; markdownlint --all-files; ruff.

Comment thread crates/rustynes-mcp/tests/gate.rs
Antigravity's third round on #624 found that dump-check's CPU-side model
of the PPU address register kept only the $2006 high byte. $2000, $2005
and $2006 all write t and share one write toggle
(nesdev_wiki/PPU_scrolling.xhtml), so after an odd number of $2005
writes the next $2006 write is the SECOND and copies a t that $2000 and
$2005 set. The model used a stale high byte there, so a $2007 write it
should place in a nametable could be counted as a pattern-table write,
which is what the CHR-RAM behaviour rule counts.

t is now modelled whole, line for line from the page's register table.
Test: three $2005 writes (fine Y 2 sets bit 13) then one $2006 write must
leave v = $2000 and count no CHR write; the old model gave $0000 and
counted one. Mutation (the second $2005 write leaves t alone): caught.

Measured on the local corpus (443 .nes files in the gitignored
tests/roms/external/, no DAT, no database, 600 frames): 0 board
findings, as docs/dump-check.md records, so no figure there moves.
(The NES 2.0 database the documented run used was not re-supplied: the
only copy on this machine is inside a reference-emulator clone, which
the provenance firewall keeps closed. The board rule does not read it.)

Correction to 6143498's message: it called this model "heuristic,
documented as such" and left it unchanged. It was neither documented as
a heuristic nor right; this commit fixes it.

Verified: the two model tests; clippy -p rustynes-frontend --all-targets;
the corpus run above.

Antigravity rounds 3 and 4 (no blocking findings), answered in 6143498f and d3d8adc0.

Fixed:

  • memif address prose. docs/memory-export-interface.md, ADR 0047 and memif.rs still said "RA flat address x at 0x0100 + x", which this PR's own RA fix made wrong. They now give the real rule:

    • RAM x is at 0x0100 + (x & 0x7FF).
    • Cartridge RAM x is at 0x0900 + (x - 0x6000).

    The offsets did not move; layout version 1 is unchanged.

  • MCP write_ram during a real-time run. It is refused now, like every other timeline change. The real-time gate asserts this, and fails when the refusal is removed.

  • vs_coin in attestation_bytes. It is masked to the two acceptor bits, as the encoder and replay already do. A test checks this.

  • reference_splitter.py. A block another user owns is returned at once, so main() refuses it with exit 1.

  • dump-check's PPU address model. It now models the whole t register, as nesdev_wiki/PPU_scrolling.xhtml gives it, so an odd number of $2005 writes hands the right t to the next $2006. A test covers it, and a mutation of the fix fails that test. Re-run over the local 443-dump corpus, the board rule still reports 0 findings, so docs/dump-check.md keeps its figures.

Not changed, and why:

  • Windows len rounding and POSIX ftruncate on an existing object. MmfStore never relies on either:
    • it unlinks before it recreates;
    • it checks capacity from its own header;
    • its readers read the length field.
  • Unbounded reads of a ROM or patch the user picked. The bundle path and dump-check's input are bounded now. A file the user opens directly is their choice, and the loader rejects malformed images.
  • The two nitpicks: the per-frame normalise in device_keys_ui, and DOCTYPE internal subsets. Both are noted, and neither is a defect for the inputs RustyNES reads.

Antigravity's fourth round on #624, one blocking finding, confirmed:
SpeedrunHost::no_game existed (it drops the timer and, with memif,
publishes the empty block with flag bit 0 clear) but nothing called it.
EmuCore::clear_rom, the one path every Close ROM and every load takes
before the console goes, now does. Before, a closed game stayed
published in shared memory with its hash, RAM and timer and the
"game loaded" flag set, against docs/memory-export-interface.md's
contract, and its timer carried over to the same ROM reopened. The next
game still binds on its first frame (after_frame rebinds on a changed
or absent hash). Test: closing the ROM unbinds the host; it fails with
the call removed.

Also from that round: the two seqlock readers in the TEST helpers
(memif DocReader::snapshot, script_host's read_region_by_name) re-read
the counter with an Acquire load and no fence, which on a weakly ordered
CPU lets the payload reads drift past the re-check. They now use the
production reader's form (mmf_read already had it): fence(Acquire), then
a Relaxed load. Not changed (recorded in the PR): clearing a held device
key's latched state on rebind, and lua_eval while the real-time runner is
active (observation is allowed while running, by design).

Verified: cargo fmt --check; clippy rustynes-frontend --all-targets
--features full and the workspace; rustynes-frontend --features full
843 passed, 0 failed; the mutation above.

This answers Antigravity round 4.

Blocking finding: confirmed and fixed. EmuCore::clear_rom now calls SpeedrunHost::no_game, so closing a ROM publishes the empty block with flag bit 0 clear. The next game binds on its first frame. The new test fails if that call is removed.

Fixed: seqlock ordering in the two test readers. I took the production reader's form (fence(Acquire) then a Relaxed re-check); mmf_read already used it.

Not changed:

  • A held device key across a rebind. This is an edge case of rebinding a key while it is held down, and it corrects itself on the next press.
  • lua_eval while the real-time runner is active. By design, observation tools answer while the machine runs; only timeline changes are refused.
  • Bounded reads of --rom, --bios and --splits paths the user named. Same reasoning as the round-3 reply.

This is the last round I am acting on for this release. Later suggestions will go to the backlog, per this project's review rule.

b65abb2 called self.speedrun.no_game() from EmuCore::clear_rom, but the
speedrun field is #[cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32"))], so both browser
builds failed to compile (CI run 39889670187: wasm32 build + clippy and
the Pages build). The call now carries the field's own gate. b65abb2
was checked with native clippy only; the wasm32 invocations are the ones
that reach this, which is the trap AGENTS.md names.

CodeRabbit on #624: the write_ram refusal was asserted inside the
30-frame real-time run, which can finish before the call, letting the
write legitimately succeed and the test fail. It now has its own
600-frame run, paused straight after the assertion.

Verified: clippy for both wasm32 builds and the workspace; cargo fmt
--check; rustynes-mcp gate 8 passed, 0 failed.

…on Windows and macOS) (#625)

* docs: record v3.5.0's release as published and run its Windows shm tests

The v3.5.0 post-release pass. Four documentation fixes and one CI change.

Release notes. .github/release-notes/v3.5.0.md merged with placeholder
MiSTer lines: the pin, the bitstreams and their verification exist only
after the oracle merges, the sibling pins that merge and the bitstreams
are compiled from the sibling's release commit. Those three lines were
filled in on the published release page; the file now carries the page
byte for byte (diffed against `gh release view v3.5.0`, trailing blank
lines trimmed). The bitstream line also records the seed-3 pair that was
attached for a few hours before the seed-2 rebuild.

PGO. Auto Release run 39898198885 built and gated the profile-guided
Linux binary and did not ship it ("Ship PGO binary" skipped). The gate's
own line: "NO PROMOTE: speedup -4.92% (need > 3.0%) / oracle=true / full
build kept=1" -- byte-identical to plain, and 4.92% slower. v3.4.1
measured -5.05%. The CHANGELOG records it, so nobody reads the skipped
job as a failure; v2.9.6 stays the only promotion.

Windows shared memory. v3.5.0's review fix for growing an OS
shared-memory region that another program still holds is Windows-only
code with a #[cfg(windows)] test, and no CI job ran it: the test
matrix reaches Windows only on a full run, without script-ipc, and every
feature-test step is `if: runner.os == 'Linux'`. full-build's Windows leg
(every ready PR) now runs `cargo test -p rustynes-frontend --lib
--features script-ipc -- shm:: script_host::`. Two traps it handles:
`tee` hides cargo's exit status, so the step instead greps for an
`ok. N passed` line with N >= 1, which a failure (FAILED), a compile
error (no line) and an empty filter (0 passed, exit 0) all miss. On Linux
the same command runs 32 tests (1 ignored), so the filter matches; the
Windows run is this PR's first, and its result is the evidence.

Tickets (to-dos/ROADMAP.md):
- T-MMC5-LATCH-VBLANK: the MMC5 split and ExGrafix CHR latches survive
  VBlank in the oracle (split_chr_bank_latch / ex_chr_bank_latch clear
  only on the next nametable fetch or a $5104 write) and the MiSTer core
  matches; the NESdev page suggests hardware may not. Settle from the
  page and a $2007-in-VBlank stimulus, not from either core. Carries the
  mmc5.sv detection-comment fix held back at v3.5.0 so the tagged tree
  matched the compiled one.
- T-WIN-SCRIPT-IPC-CI: the step above; closes when it has passed once.
- T-V350-REVIEW-RESIDUE: the Antigravity suggestions not taken on #624
  and #69, each to be confirmed with a failing test or refuted.

docs/agents/mister-cosim.md gains the seed-script trap: the sweep
script's footer printed the pre-v2.6.23 rule and the v3.5.0 pin followed
it (seed 3 over seed 2) until CodeRabbit caught it on sibling #69.
docs/SALVAGE_MANIFEST.md records today's scratch salvage (7,395 files,
166 MB, into the gitignored salvaged/tmp-scratch/f63c2db0/).

Verified: markdownlint on every changed Markdown file; pre-commit's YAML
and actionlint hooks on ci.yml; release_anchor_audit,
release_notes_render_audit, release_state_prose_audit and
contribution_checklist_audit pass (45 tests across the four, 0 failed). No
code changed, so no clippy or test suites were run.

* ci: require each Windows shm test group to pass, on the full build

Review of #625 (CodeRabbit and Antigravity, the same finding): libtest
ORs its name filters into one run with one summary line, so the step's
check, a non-zero `ok. N passed`, held as long as ANY of `shm::` and
`script_host::` matched. A rename or a #[cfg] change emptying one group
would have left the step green with that group untested, which is the
exact silent-coverage failure the step was added to end.

The check is now per group: each of shm::, script_host:: and memif::
must show at least one `test <group>::... ... ok` line, and the
Windows-only test the step exists for,
script_host::tests::a_larger_write_with_a_reader_attached_is_refused_and_the_region_kept,
must pass by name. `set -o pipefail` makes a cargo failure fail the
step directly instead of relying on the grep.

Antigravity's second point: the step built with `--features script-ipc`
right after the job built `--features full`, so Cargo compiled the
dependency chain a second time under another feature fingerprint and
cached both. It now tests with `full`, which contains script-ipc and
memif, reusing the build and adding the memif:: tests to the run.

Verified on Linux with the exact command: 35 passed, 1 ignored; per-group
pattern counts shm 9, script_host 23, memif 3. The named test is
#[cfg(windows)], so on Linux only its twin
(a_larger_write_replaces_the_region) runs; the Windows leg of this PR
is the first execution of the named one.

* ci: run the shm tests on macOS too; correct the step's description

Antigravity's second pass on #625, three points, all taken.

macOS. shm.rs has an Apple implementation of its own (target_vendor =
"apple": the variadic shm_open, PSHMNAMLEN's 31-byte name limit, a u16
st_mode, a single-resize ftruncate), and full-build compiles it on
macos-15 exactly as it compiles the Windows one, yet only the Windows leg
ran the tests. The step now runs on both legs. The per-group checks
(shm::, script_host::, memif:: each with a passing test) apply to both;
the by-name check for the Windows-only grow-recovery test is gated on
RUNNER_OS, since on macOS its #[cfg(not(windows))] twin runs instead.

Descriptions. The CHANGELOG said no job built script-ipc on Windows,
which is wrong: full-build has compiled `full` (which includes it) on
Windows and macOS since v2.9.7; what no job did was run its tests. That
entry and the T-WIN-SCRIPT-IPC-CI row also still described the first
version of the step (script-ipc, two groups). Both now say what the step
does, and the ticket closes when it has passed on both systems.

Margins. docs/agents/mister-cosim.md quoted seed 2's off-die
+0.224 / +0.088 beside release notes giving +0.380 / +0.081 for the same
seed. Both are right for different builds: the first is the 2026-10-22
sweep, before the review fixes changed the RTL; the second is the
released rebuild of 2026-10-23. The bullet now says which is which.

Verified: pre-commit (check-yaml, actionlint, markdownlint) on the four
files; release_anchor_audit 18/0 and release_state_prose_audit 9/0. The
macOS and Windows runs of this PR are the first executions of those
platforms' shm tests.

* test(shm): plant the squatted object without fchmod on macOS

The new full-build step's first run (CI 40039138613) did its job on both
systems. Windows: 33 passed, among them
a_larger_write_with_a_reader_attached_is_refused_and_the_region_kept,
the v3.5.0 grow-recovery test, which had never run anywhere. macOS: 34
passed and one failed, shm::tests::a_squatted_object_with_open_permissions_is_refused,
at shm.rs:902, `assert_eq!(libc::fchmod(fd, 0o666), 0)`.

The cause is the fixture, not the check. macOS does not implement fchmod
on a POSIX shared-memory descriptor, so the test died planting its
squatted object, before it reached SharedRegion::open/create. The
production check reads the mode with fstat, and every other shm test,
create and open included, passes on macOS.

On Apple the plant now keeps the mode shm_open gives it (0666 less the
umask: 0644 under the usual 022, which others can read, so the owner rule
must refuse it); elsewhere fchmod still forces 0666. Either way the test
reads the mode back with fstat and expects exactly that "mode NNN" in the
refusal, instead of assuming 666. It asserts the plant actually has group
or other bits, so a runner with umask 077 fails loudly ("no squatted
object can be planted") rather than passing a test that tested nothing.
The u32::from on st_mode carries the same justified
#[allow(clippy::useless_conversion)] as check_owner (u32 on Linux, u16
on macOS).

Verified on Linux: cargo fmt --check; clippy -D warnings for the
workspace and for rustynes-frontend --features full; the step's command,
35 passed, 1 ignored. Mutation: owner_ok reduced to `uid == me` (the
mode half removed) makes the test FAIL at the open/create assertion;
restored from a snapshot, diff confirmed. The macOS path is verified by
this PR's next macOS run only; it cannot run here.

* test(shm): unlink the planted object on every exit from the squat test

Antigravity on 31b0302, both points taken.

The test unlinked its planted object only at the end, so any failing
assertion between shm_open and that line (ftruncate, fchmod, fstat,
the new "plant has group or other bits" check, or the refusal checks
themselves) returned early and left a named object in the system's
POSIX shared-memory namespace, where it outlives the test process. A
local Plant(CString) guard now owns the name from the moment shm_open
succeeds and unlinks it on drop; the success path drops it explicitly at
the point the old shm_unlink stood, before the fresh create. The struct
sits at the top of the function because clippy's items_after_statements
rejects it after the first statement.

The comment above shm_open still said the fchmod "sets them
regardless", which 31b0302 made false on Apple. It now says the fchmod
forces 0666 outside Apple and that Apple keeps the umask-reduced mode.

Evidence for 31b0302 itself, from CI run 40040552828 (the run this push
supersedes): full build (macos-15) passed, the step's log showing
`shm::tests::a_squatted_object_with_open_permissions_is_refused ... ok`
and 35 passed, 0 failed; full build (windows-latest) passed.

Verified on Linux: cargo fmt --check; clippy -D warnings for the
workspace and for rustynes-frontend --features full; the step's command,
35 passed, 1 ignored.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_014qfTKi2M3swo7qnwvYCkDj

* test(shm): require owner read/write on the planted object

CodeRabbit on 31b0302. On Apple the planted object keeps the mode
shm_open's 0666 is reduced to by the umask. The existing precondition
only required a group or other bit, so an unusual umask such as 0700
gives mode 0066 and passes it; SharedRegion::open and ::create then
open the object O_RDWR, the owner has neither bit, and both fail with
the OS's EACCES before check_owner reads the mode. The test would
report a raw permission error rather than the refusal it exists to
check, or the precondition message saying why it could not run.

A second precondition now requires mode & 0o600 == 0o600, with a
message naming the umask as the cause. Outside Apple fchmod forces
0666, so neither precondition can bind there; the comment says so.

Verified on Linux: cargo fmt --check; clippy -D warnings with
rustynes-frontend --features full; the full-build step's command, 35
passed, 1 ignored. Supersedes CI run 40041659268, which was mid-run.
