v3.5.0 post-release

Records v3.5.0 as published. Also closes one coverage gap the release review found.

  • Release notes: .github/release-notes/v3.5.0.md now matches the published release page. The MiSTer pin, bitstream and verification lines were placeholders at merge and were filled in on the page afterwards.
  • PGO: the CHANGELOG records why the Linux download is the plain build. The gate's own output: NO PROMOTE: speedup -4.92% (need > 3.0%) / oracle=true, from Auto Release run 39898198885. For comparison, v3.4.1 measured -5.05%.
  • CI (T-WIN-SCRIPT-IPC-CI): the OS shared-memory store's #[cfg(windows)] tests, including v3.5.0's recovery when a region is grown while another program holds it, ran in no job. full-build's Windows leg now runs the shm:: and script_host:: tests with script-ipc. It fails on a missing or zero ok. N passed line. This PR's Windows run is the first time that code is tested.
  • Tickets:
    • T-MMC5-LATCH-VBLANK: the MMC5 split and ExGrafix CHR latches survive VBlank in both cores. It also carries the held-back mmc5.sv comment fix.
    • T-V350-REVIEW-RESIDUE: the review suggestions not taken.
  • Agent notes: the seed-script trap goes in docs/agents/mister-cosim.md. docs/SALVAGE_MANIFEST.md gets today's salvage record.

Checks run

  • markdownlint on every changed file.
  • actionlint and check-yaml on ci.yml.
  • release_anchor_audit, release_notes_render_audit, release_state_prose_audit and contribution_checklist_audit: 45 passed, 0 failed.
  • The new step's command on Linux runs 32 tests, so the filter matches.

Note

Low Risk
Documentation and CI coverage for script IPC shared memory; the only code change is a platform-specific unit test adjustment with no production behavior change.

Overview
Post-release housekeeping for v3.5.0: published MiSTer oracle pin, seed-2 bitstream checksums/timing, and verification lines replace placeholders in .github/release-notes/v3.5.0.md; CHANGELOG records that Linux stayed on the plain build (PGO −4.92%, below the 3% bar) and documents the CI gap fix.

CI (T-WIN-SCRIPT-IPC-CI): after the full build on Windows and macOS, full-build now runs shm::, script_host::, and memif:: lib tests and fails unless each module shows at least one passing test; Windows must pass the grow-while-reader-attached test by name.

Tests: the Unix squatter-permission test in shm.rs is adjusted for macOS (fchmod unsupported on POSIX shm): plant uses umask-reduced mode, dynamic expected mode in errors, Plant RAII cleanup, and umask preconditions on Apple.

Docs/process: MiSTer seed-rule lesson in mister-cosim.md, salvage manifest entry for the v3.5.0 session, and three roadmap tickets (T-MMC5-LATCH-VBLANK, T-WIN-SCRIPT-IPC-CI, T-V350-REVIEW-RESIDUE).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated MiSTer release notes with seed-2 build details, checksums, timing margins, and byte-for-byte verification of 256 stems and 1,156 artifacts. The bitstreams are attached.
    • Updated the changelog and roadmap with release, build, and investigation notes.
  • Tests
    • Windows and macOS CI now run shared-memory, script-host, and memory-interface tests, requiring a passing test in each group. Windows also requires the region-growth test to pass.
    • Adjusted shared-memory permission tests to account for platform-specific behavior and verify recovery after a permission-denied result.

The v3.5.0 post-release pass. Four documentation fixes and one CI change.

Release notes. .github/release-notes/v3.5.0.md merged with placeholder
MiSTer lines: the pin, the bitstreams and their verification exist only
after the oracle merges, the sibling pins that merge and the bitstreams
are compiled from the sibling's release commit. Those three lines were
filled in on the published release page; the file now carries the page
byte for byte (diffed against `gh release view v3.5.0`, trailing blank
lines trimmed). The bitstream line also records the seed-3 pair that was
attached for a few hours before the seed-2 rebuild.

PGO. Auto Release run 39898198885 built and gated the profile-guided
Linux binary and did not ship it ("Ship PGO binary" skipped). The gate's
own line: "NO PROMOTE: speedup -4.92% (need > 3.0%) / oracle=true / full
build kept=1" -- byte-identical to plain, and 4.92% slower. v3.4.1
measured -5.05%. The CHANGELOG records it, so nobody reads the skipped
job as a failure; v2.9.6 stays the only promotion.

Windows shared memory. v3.5.0's review fix for growing an OS
shared-memory region that another program still holds is Windows-only
code with a #[cfg(windows)] test, and no CI job ran it: the test
matrix reaches Windows only on a full run, without script-ipc, and every
feature-test step is `if: runner.os == 'Linux'`. full-build's Windows leg
(every ready PR) now runs `cargo test -p rustynes-frontend --lib
--features script-ipc -- shm:: script_host::`. Two traps it handles:
`tee` hides cargo's exit status, so the step instead greps for an
`ok. N passed` line with N >= 1, which a failure (FAILED), a compile
error (no line) and an empty filter (0 passed, exit 0) all miss. On Linux
the same command runs 32 tests (1 ignored), so the filter matches; the
Windows run is this PR's first, and its result is the evidence.

Tickets (to-dos/ROADMAP.md):
- T-MMC5-LATCH-VBLANK: the MMC5 split and ExGrafix CHR latches survive
  VBlank in the oracle (split_chr_bank_latch / ex_chr_bank_latch clear
  only on the next nametable fetch or a $5104 write) and the MiSTer core
  matches; the NESdev page suggests hardware may not. Settle from the
  page and a $2007-in-VBlank stimulus, not from either core. Carries the
  mmc5.sv detection-comment fix held back at v3.5.0 so the tagged tree
  matched the compiled one.
- T-WIN-SCRIPT-IPC-CI: the step above; closes when it has passed once.
- T-V350-REVIEW-RESIDUE: the Antigravity suggestions not taken on #624
  and #69, each to be confirmed with a failing test or refuted.

docs/agents/mister-cosim.md gains the seed-script trap: the sweep
script's footer printed the pre-v2.6.23 rule and the v3.5.0 pin followed
it (seed 3 over seed 2) until CodeRabbit caught it on sibling #69.
docs/SALVAGE_MANIFEST.md records today's scratch salvage (7,395 files,
166 MB, into the gitignored salvaged/tmp-scratch/f63c2db0/).

Verified: markdownlint on every changed Markdown file; pre-commit's YAML
and actionlint hooks on ci.yml; release_anchor_audit,
release_notes_render_audit, release_state_prose_audit and
contribution_checklist_audit pass (45 tests across the four, 0 failed). No
code changed, so no clippy or test suites were run.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

Updates the v3.5.0 release documentation, roadmap, and post-release notes, runs the shm::, script_host::, and memif:: test suites on the Windows and macOS full-build CI legs with explicit per-group pass checks, and adapts the POSIX shared-memory permissions test in shm.rs to avoid fchmod on macOS and clean up its planted object on panic.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

None.

Nitpicks

  • to-dos/ROADMAP.md:1480: Once the macOS leg passes with the shm.rs fix on this PR, T-WIN-SCRIPT-IPC-CI's closing condition ("Closes when that step has passed once on both") will already be met and the row can be marked DONE rather than deferred to v3.5.1.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

Updates the v3.5.0 release notes and project docs with post-release verification data, runs the shm::, script_host::, and memif:: test suites on macOS and Windows in the full-build CI job, and adjusts the Unix shared-memory permission test in shm.rs to work on macOS where fchmod is unsupported on POSIX shared-memory descriptors.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • crates/rustynes-frontend/src/shm.rs:920-937: On macOS (target_vendor = "apple"), where fchmod on a POSIX shared-memory descriptor returns EINVAL, the test relies on the process umask leaving at least one group/other bit set (0o666 & ~umask). On a developer machine or runner configured with a hardened umask 077, mode & 0o077 will be 0 and the test will fail its precondition assertion. If mode & 0o077 == 0 on Apple, consider planting the object from a short-lived child process (similar to shm_child_process_reader below) that calls libc::umask(0) before shm_open, avoiding process-global umask races in the multithreaded test runner.

Nitpicks

  • to-dos/ROADMAP.md:1480 / CHANGELOG.md:57: T-WIN-SCRIPT-IPC-CI states that it "Closes when that step has passed once on both" Windows and macOS; once this PR's full-build matrix is green, the ticket can be marked DONE directly rather than left open for v3.5.1.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

Updates the v3.5.0 release notes and post-release documentation (PGO gate result, salvage manifest, and follow-up roadmap items), wires the shm::, script_host::, and memif:: unit tests into the macOS and Windows full-build CI job, and adjusts the Unix permission test in shm.rs to avoid calling fchmod on POSIX shared-memory descriptors on macOS.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • crates/rustynes-frontend/src/shm.rs:900-935: If ftruncate, fchmod, fstat, or the new assert_ne!(mode & 0o077, 0, ...) assertion panics after shm_open succeeds (for example, on a macOS machine with umask 077), execution returns before reaching libc::shm_unlink(c.as_ptr()) at line 935 and leaks the named POSIX shared-memory object in the kernel namespace. Unlinking via a drop guard (or unlinking before panicking on mode & 0o077 == 0) would keep failed runs clean.

Nitpicks

  • crates/rustynes-frontend/src/shm.rs:889-890: The comment above shm_open still states (umask may clear some bits; the fchmod below sets them regardless), which contradicts the new #[cfg(not(target_vendor = "apple"))] gate on fchmod immediately below.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

None.

Nitpicks

  • .github/workflows/ci.yml: Consider adding || { echo "Windows grow-recovery test did not run"; exit 1; } to the RUNNER_OS = Windows grep check so a renamed or skipped test produces a diagnostic message matching the loop above rather than a silent exit code 1.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

Updates the v3.5.0 release notes and salvage/cosim documentation with post-release artifacts and PGO results, records follow-up roadmap tickets, and runs the shm, script_host, and memif unit tests on Windows in the full-build CI job.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • macOS shm, script_host, and memif tests remain unexecuted in CI (ci.yml): full-build already compiles --features full on both macos-15 and windows-latest (ci.yml), while the test job only runs --features full on Linux (ci.yml). Gating the new test step to runner.os == 'Windows' leaves the macOS-specific code paths in shm.rs (#[cfg(target_vendor = "apple")] variadic shm_open, PSHMNAMLEN, u16 st_mode, and single-resize ftruncate) and the #[cfg(unix)] / #[cfg(not(windows))] tests in shm.rs and script_host.rs completely unexercised on macos-15. Consider running shm:: script_host:: memif:: on both full-build matrix OSes (keeping only the final grep for a_larger_write_with_a_reader_attached_is_refused_and_the_region_kept gated on Windows).
  • Stale description of the CI step in CHANGELOG.md and to-dos/ROADMAP.md (CHANGELOG.md, ROADMAP.md):
    • CHANGELOG.md states "no CI job built script-ipc on Windows", but full-build has compiled --features full (which includes script-ipc) on Windows since v2.9.7 (ci.yml); it only skipped running the tests.
    • Both CHANGELOG.md and ROADMAP.md still describe the step as running shm:: and script_host:: with script-ipc, whereas ci.yml now runs --features full and checks shm::, script_host::, and memif::.

Nitpicks

  • Pre-fix vs. post-fix seed-2 timing margins (mister-cosim.md, v3.5.0.md): mister-cosim.md cites seed 2's off-die margin as +0.224 / +0.088 (from the pre-review-fix sweep), while v3.5.0.md records +0.380 / +0.081 ns for the rebuilt seed-2 bitstream that includes the review fixes. Noting in mister-cosim.md that +0.224 / +0.088 was the pre-fix sweep number would avoid look-up confusion between the two documents.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

This PR updates the v3.5.0 release notes and changelog with post-release bitstream/PGO results, logs the post-release scratch salvage manifest and v3.5.1 follow-up tickets, and wires the Windows shm and script_host unit tests into CI.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • ci.yml: Line 616 compiles rustynes-frontend with --features full (which enables rustynes-core/hd-pack, retroachievements, memif, etc.), and line 627 then runs cargo test with --features script-ipc. Switching the feature set forces Cargo on the Windows runner to recompile rustynes-ppu, rustynes-core, rustynes-probe, and rustynes-frontend under a second feature fingerprint and stores both in the full-build cache. Passing --features full to cargo test (which already includes script-ipc and memif) reuses the dependencies compiled in the previous step and allows adding memif:: to the filter as well.
  • ci.yml: libtest ORs multiple filter arguments (-- shm:: script_host::) into a single run with one test result: ok. N passed summary line. If either shm:: or script_host:: stops matching any tests due to a rename or #[cfg] change, the grep check on line 628 still exits 0 because the remaining filter produces a non-zero pass count. Also checking grep -q '^test shm::' test.log && grep -q '^test script_host::' test.log (or explicitly matching a_larger_write_with_a_reader_attached_is_refused_and_the_region_kept ... ok) ensures neither filter can silently match zero tests.

Nitpicks

None.

Comment thread .github/workflows/ci.yml Outdated
Review of #625 (CodeRabbit and Antigravity, the same finding): libtest
ORs its name filters into one run with one summary line, so the step's
check, a non-zero `ok. N passed`, held as long as ANY of `shm::` and
`script_host::` matched. A rename or a #[cfg] change emptying one group
would have left the step green with that group untested, which is the
exact silent-coverage failure the step was added to end.

The check is now per group: each of shm::, script_host:: and memif::
must show at least one `test <group>::... ... ok` line, and the
Windows-only test the step exists for,
script_host::tests::a_larger_write_with_a_reader_attached_is_refused_and_the_region_kept,
must pass by name. `set -o pipefail` makes a cargo failure fail the
step directly instead of relying on the grep.

Antigravity's second point: the step built with `--features script-ipc`
right after the job built `--features full`, so Cargo compiled the
dependency chain a second time under another feature fingerprint and
cached both. It now tests with `full`, which contains script-ipc and
memif, reusing the build and adding the memif:: tests to the run.

Verified on Linux with the exact command: 35 passed, 1 ignored; per-group
pattern counts shm 9, script_host 23, memif 3. The named test is
#[cfg(windows)], so on Linux only its twin
(a_larger_write_replaces_the_region) runs; the Windows leg of this PR
is the first execution of the named one.

Thanks. Both suggestions are taken in 0a05009b:

  • Reuse the build: the step now tests with --features full, the set the previous step built. That avoids a second dependency fingerprint, and the run now includes memif::.
  • Per-group check: each of shm::, script_host:: and memif:: must show a passing test, and the Windows grow-recovery test must pass by name.

Antigravity's second pass on #625, three points, all taken.

macOS. shm.rs has an Apple implementation of its own (target_vendor =
"apple": the variadic shm_open, PSHMNAMLEN's 31-byte name limit, a u16
st_mode, a single-resize ftruncate), and full-build compiles it on
macos-15 exactly as it compiles the Windows one, yet only the Windows leg
ran the tests. The step now runs on both legs. The per-group checks
(shm::, script_host::, memif:: each with a passing test) apply to both;
the by-name check for the Windows-only grow-recovery test is gated on
RUNNER_OS, since on macOS its #[cfg(not(windows))] twin runs instead.

Descriptions. The CHANGELOG said no job built script-ipc on Windows,
which is wrong: full-build has compiled `full` (which includes it) on
Windows and macOS since v2.9.7; what no job did was run its tests. That
entry and the T-WIN-SCRIPT-IPC-CI row also still described the first
version of the step (script-ipc, two groups). Both now say what the step
does, and the ticket closes when it has passed on both systems.

Margins. docs/agents/mister-cosim.md quoted seed 2's off-die
+0.224 / +0.088 beside release notes giving +0.380 / +0.081 for the same
seed. Both are right for different builds: the first is the 2026-10-22
sweep, before the review fixes changed the RTL; the second is the
released rebuild of 2026-10-23. The bullet now says which is which.

Verified: pre-commit (check-yaml, actionlint, markdownlint) on the four
files; release_anchor_audit 18/0 and release_state_prose_audit 9/0. The
macOS and Windows runs of this PR are the first executions of those
platforms' shm tests.

Thanks for the second pass. All three points are taken in the next commit on this branch:

  • macOS: the step now runs on both full-build legs. The per-group checks apply to both; the by-name check for the Windows-only grow test is gated on RUNNER_OS, because on macOS its #[cfg(not(windows))] twin runs instead.
  • Stale description: corrected in the CHANGELOG and in the T-WIN-SCRIPT-IPC-CI row. full-build did compile script-ipc on Windows; it was the tests that never ran. Both now describe the current step.
  • Margins: docs/agents/mister-cosim.md now labels +0.224 / +0.088 as the 2026-10-22 sweep, from before the review fixes, and gives the released 2026-10-23 rebuild's +0.380 / +0.081 beside it.

Third pass: thanks. No blocking issues or suggestions remain. Leaving the nitpick (a message on the Windows by-name grep) as it is. The step already fails on a missing or renamed test, and the full teed test list just above that line shows which test is absent. Moving to ready.

The new full-build step's first run (CI 40039138613) did its job on both
systems. Windows: 33 passed, among them
a_larger_write_with_a_reader_attached_is_refused_and_the_region_kept,
the v3.5.0 grow-recovery test, which had never run anywhere. macOS: 34
passed and one failed, shm::tests::a_squatted_object_with_open_permissions_is_refused,
at shm.rs:902, `assert_eq!(libc::fchmod(fd, 0o666), 0)`.

The cause is the fixture, not the check. macOS does not implement fchmod
on a POSIX shared-memory descriptor, so the test died planting its
squatted object, before it reached SharedRegion::open/create. The
production check reads the mode with fstat, and every other shm test,
create and open included, passes on macOS.

On Apple the plant now keeps the mode shm_open gives it (0666 less the
umask: 0644 under the usual 022, which others can read, so the owner rule
must refuse it); elsewhere fchmod still forces 0666. Either way the test
reads the mode back with fstat and expects exactly that "mode NNN" in the
refusal, instead of assuming 666. It asserts the plant actually has group
or other bits, so a runner with umask 077 fails loudly ("no squatted
object can be planted") rather than passing a test that tested nothing.
The u32::from on st_mode carries the same justified
#[allow(clippy::useless_conversion)] as check_owner (u32 on Linux, u16
on macOS).

Verified on Linux: cargo fmt --check; clippy -D warnings for the
workspace and for rustynes-frontend --features full; the step's command,
35 passed, 1 ignored. Mutation: owner_ok reduced to `uid == me` (the
mode half removed) makes the test FAIL at the open/create assertion;
restored from a snapshot, diff confirmed. The macOS path is verified by
this PR's next macOS run only; it cannot run here.

Antigravity on 31b0302, both points taken.

The test unlinked its planted object only at the end, so any failing
assertion between shm_open and that line (ftruncate, fchmod, fstat,
the new "plant has group or other bits" check, or the refusal checks
themselves) returned early and left a named object in the system's
POSIX shared-memory namespace, where it outlives the test process. A
local Plant(CString) guard now owns the name from the moment shm_open
succeeds and unlinks it on drop; the success path drops it explicitly at
the point the old shm_unlink stood, before the fresh create. The struct
sits at the top of the function because clippy's items_after_statements
rejects it after the first statement.

The comment above shm_open still said the fchmod "sets them
regardless", which 31b0302 made false on Apple. It now says the fchmod
forces 0666 outside Apple and that Apple keeps the umask-reduced mode.

Evidence for 31b0302 itself, from CI run 40040552828 (the run this push
supersedes): full build (macos-15) passed, the step's log showing
`shm::tests::a_squatted_object_with_open_permissions_is_refused ... ok`
and 35 passed, 0 failed; full build (windows-latest) passed.

Verified on Linux: cargo fmt --check; clippy -D warnings for the
workspace and for rustynes-frontend --features full; the step's command,
35 passed, 1 ignored.

Thanks. Both points are taken in the next commit on this branch:

  • Leak on failure: a local Plant(CString) guard now owns the planted name from the moment shm_open succeeds and unlinks it on drop, so an early failure cleans up after itself. The success path drops it explicitly where the old shm_unlink was.
  • Stale comment: fixed. It now says the fchmod forces 0666 outside Apple, and that on Apple the object keeps the mode the umask leaves.

The first fix (31b03020) passed on macOS in run 40040552828: a_squatted_object_with_open_permissions_is_refused ... ok, 35 passed, 0 failed.

Fifth pass: thanks. No blocking issues; leaving both of the remaining points as they are.

  • umask 077 on macOS: that is a deliberate choice. Under a umask that private no squatted object can be planted, so the test fails at its precondition with a message saying exactly that, rather than passing having tested nothing. GitHub's macOS runners use 022, which is what this PR's run shows. Planting from a child process with umask(0) would work, but it adds a process-spawn fixture to cover a configuration CI does not have. Worth doing if a developer machine ever hits it.
  • Mark T-WIN-SCRIPT-IPC-CI DONE here: the ticket closes on a recorded passing run. That record will be the merge's main run, and the closure goes in the next docs pass rather than being asserted ahead of it.

CodeRabbit on 31b0302. On Apple the planted object keeps the mode
shm_open's 0666 is reduced to by the umask. The existing precondition
only required a group or other bit, so an unusual umask such as 0700
gives mode 0066 and passes it; SharedRegion::open and ::create then
open the object O_RDWR, the owner has neither bit, and both fail with
the OS's EACCES before check_owner reads the mode. The test would
report a raw permission error rather than the refusal it exists to
check, or the precondition message saying why it could not run.

A second precondition now requires mode & 0o600 == 0o600, with a
message naming the umask as the cause. Outside Apple fchmod forces
0666, so neither precondition can bind there; the comment says so.

Verified on Linux: cargo fmt --check; clippy -D warnings with
rustynes-frontend --features full; the full-build step's command, 35
passed, 1 ignored. Supersedes CI run 40041659268, which was mid-run.
