Description

Add image inputs to the OpenEngine gRPC Generate path and advertise them only when the loaded model can consume them.

  • Map image URL, data-URI, and raw-byte sources into the LLM API while preserving order and caller UUIDs.
  • Use one cached capability snapshot for both GetModelInfo and Generate, including trtllm_supported_modalities: ["image"].
  • Harden the shared async media fetcher against DNS rebinding and distinguish retryable transport failures; this security-relevant behavior also applies to remote-media fetches used by trtllm-serve.
  • Bound item count, decode concurrency, and aggregate decoded size; report transient fetch failures as UNAVAILABLE.
  • Keep video, audio, LoRA, and proto changes out of scope.

This follows the existing OpenEngine rule: “Reported capabilities describe what Generate accepts.” The change is independent of ai-dynamo/dynamo#15288; Dynamo integration will use a new PR.

Test Coverage

Validated on one RTX 5880 Ada GPU with nvcr.io/nvidia/tensorrt-llm/release:1.4.0rc1.dev202610140007:

  • 139 focused OpenEngine/media tests passed after rebasing onto current main.
  • Real VLM conformance passed with Qwen3-VL-2B-Instruct and confirmed expanded prompt usage.
  • A real-weights OpenEngine request correctly described an ordered red/blue image; prompt tokens expanded from 19 input IDs to 82 tokens.
  • End-to-end Dynamo validation covered data URI, HTTPS URL, two ordered images, text-only input, streaming, and explicit video/audio refusal.
Request main at 701772a14 This branch
one data image UNIMPLEMENTED 200; correct red/blue description; usage 274 + 23
same JPEG over HTTPS UNIMPLEMENTED 200; correct car description; usage 322 + 2
two ordered images UNIMPLEMENTED 200; first red, second blue; usage 163 + 32
video / audio UNIMPLEMENTED UNIMPLEMENTED with the image-only capability named
VLM discovery supports_multimodal=false true; modalities list contains image
text-model discovery false false

Relevant pre-commit hooks pass, including Ruff, formatting, generated-binding checks, and test-list validation.

PR Checklist

  • Reviewed the checklist; the API addition is backward compatible, adds no dependency, and includes regression coverage.

Dev Engineer Review

OpenEngine gRPC now supports image inputs from URLs, data URIs, and raw bytes. The implementation preserves input order and UUIDs, advertises image capability only for supported models, and maps transient fetch failures to UNAVAILABLE.

The change adds limits for image count, concurrent decoding, and aggregate decoded size. It also adds shared media capability resolution, validated asynchronous fetching, raw-byte decoding, and centralized model-type resolution. Video, audio, LoRA, and proto changes remain out of scope.

The working tree is clean, so the repository diff does not independently verify the supplied PR changes. Review finding counts and test execution results are unavailable.

QA Engineer Review

The change adds tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/test_multimodal.py and test_multimodal_conformance.py, and updates OpenEngine, media-loading, URL-validation, and model-configuration tests. It also updates tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_a10.yml and l0_cpu.yml to include multimodal coverage.

Coverage includes capability discovery, image and video mapping, ordering, UUIDs, token inputs, text-only requests, concurrency and size limits, cancellation, usage accounting, malformed media, unsupported modalities, transient fetch failures, DNS validation, raw-byte image decoding, and GPU-gated Qwen3-VL conformance. Coverage verdict: sufficient, subject to execution of the GPU-gated conformance test.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/capabilities.py — Adds cached media capability resolution and placeholder formatting. Verify model capability detection and malformed-template handling.
  • tensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/control.py — GetModelInfo now reports supported media modalities. Verify metadata for multimodal and non-multimodal models.
  • tensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/errors.py — Adds MediaUnavailableError. Verify public export and error translation.
  • tensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/request_mapping.py — Adds asynchronous image loading, ordering, UUID propagation, limits, and cancellation. Verify validation and failure status mapping.
  • tensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/servicer.py — Caches capabilities and maps media failures to UNAVAILABLE. Verify Generate behavior and existing LoRA and prefix-cache restrictions.
  • tensorrt_llm/inputs/media_io.py — Adds shared-session fetching, DNS validation, transient fetch errors, and byte decoding. Verify URL security, retryable errors, timeouts, and cleanup.
  • tensorrt_llm/inputs/model_config.py — Adds shared top-level model-type resolution. Verify class-level precedence and instance fallback.
  • tensorrt_llm/inputs/utils.py — Media loaders now use shared session handling. Verify image, video, and audio fetch behavior.
  • tensorrt_llm/serve/chat_utils.py — Uses the centralized model-type resolver. Verify unchanged model-type behavior.
  • tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_a10.yml — Adds multimodal conformance to the A10 CI list.
  • tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml — Adds the CPU multimodal unit-test module to the CI list.
  • tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/test_control.py — Verifies advertised image capability metadata. It is covered by the configured OpenEngine test lists.
  • tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/test_multimodal.py — Covers mapping, limits, cancellation, errors, and usage accounting. It is listed in l0_cpu.yml.
  • tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/test_multimodal_conformance.py — Covers GPU-gated Qwen3-VL image generation. It is listed in l0_a10.yml.
  • tests/unittest/inputs/test_async_media_loading.py — Covers raw-byte image decoding and validating resolver use. Verify it remains included in the applicable input-test suite.
  • tests/unittest/inputs/test_url_validation.py — Covers transient DNS, timeout, retryable HTTP, resolver, and private-address behavior. Verify it remains included in the applicable input-test suite.
  • tests/unittest/inputs/test_model_config.py — Covers model-type precedence and fallback behavior. Verify it remains included in the applicable input-test suite.

Walkthrough

OpenEngine now resolves supported media modalities from the loaded model, maps image inputs for generation, and reports multimodal capability in model info. Remote media fetch failures receive distinct error classifications and map to gRPC UNAVAILABLE.

Changes

OpenEngine multimodal media support

Image support makes request mapping asynchronous. On servers without a frontend coordinator, two concurrent requests that share an ID can now both start, and one of them cannot be cancelled. Reserve the ID before media mapping before merging. The earlier import-order failure is fixed.

306-311: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

A non-retryable HTTP error escapes as a raw ClientResponseError.

For a 4xx status other than 408 or 429, the bare raise propagates aiohttp.ClientResponseError. The mapper converts that error to ValueError, which is acceptable. This behavior has no test, so a regression in the status split would go undetected. Add a test where raise_for_status raises ClientResponseError(status=404). The test must assert that MediaFetchError is not raised. Add a second case with status 503 that expects MediaFetchError. Place both tests in tests/unittest/inputs/test_url_validation.py.

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.

The OpenEngine side holds together: capability and Generate read one snapshot, the gather cleanup cancels and drains siblings, and the CPU tests pin ordering, UUIDs, caps, and status codes. Two whole-PR points:

Description scope vs. media_io.py. The resolver-level DNS re-validation on the shared aiohttp session and the new MediaFetchError taxonomy apply to every path that fetches remote media, including the OpenAI chat server (inputs/utils.py uses the same global session). The description's bullets only mention UNAVAILABLE mapping. Either call the resolver change out explicitly in the description (it is a security-relevant behavior change for trtllm-serve users) or split it into its own PR per the one-concern rule in AGENTS.md.

Placeholder contract is implicit. Nothing in this path inserts model placeholders; the client must already embed them in prompt / token_ids in media order (the placeholder strings in mm_item_order are only consumed by the chat-template path). A mismatch surfaces as INVALID_ARGUMENT from generate_async, which is fine, but a Dynamo integrator has no way to learn the rule. The proto comment on MediaItem in generation.proto is the natural place for one or two lines stating it.

No OpenEngine user doc exists under docs/source, so there is nothing to update there; the proto comment is the only discoverable contract.
