[TRTLLM-12891][feat] Support attention DP in V2 KV cache connectors - #19369
Conversation
Require KVCacheManagerV2 and explicit backend opt-in for owner-local scheduler adapters sharing a storage pool. Keep V1 KVCM and the existing filesystem example unchanged. Exclude dummy requests, preserve grouped V2 allocation callbacks, and coordinate bounded async-load recovery without recycling DMA-owned pages. Add a separate ADP filesystem example and owner, recovery, and persistent pool regressions. Signed-off-by: Simeng Liu <simengl@nvidia.com>

Track async load/save deadlines across normal and recovery iterations, including dummy and mixed batches. Synchronize poll failures and propagate cancellation or shutdown from idle owners without extending the grace. Retain registered pools on forward/callback failures and reject ordinary request cleanup while connector transfers still own the pages. Keep V1 KVCM and non-ADP behavior unchanged. Add regressions for cross-iteration deadlines, root control requests, completion and poll errors, and DMA-safe forward and cleanup failures. Signed-off-by: Simeng Liu <simengl@nvidia.com>

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winScope the scheduler and metadata rules to non-ADP execution.
The earlier API text says that the scheduler runs only on rank 0 and broadcasts metadata to all workers. The ADP section says that every ADP rank owns a scheduler and worker with local metadata, but it does not clearly state that these rules override the earlier contract. A connector author can follow the rank-0 or broadcast model and violate the ADP requirement that nonzero ranks handle callbacks and local metadata. Mark the earlier rules as non-ADP behavior, or state the ADP override here.

…act tests main NVIDIA#20996 renamed PyTorchModelEngine to ModelEngine, and the source-contract tests extract the class by that name. main NVIDIA#19369 stops the sampler's async worker before the CUDA graphs are released and reads enable_attention_dp and _kv_connector_failed during shutdown, so the shutdown-retry test now expects the sampler stop in the runtime phase and sets those attributes. Description
Support attention data parallelism (ADP) in the V2 KV cache connector. Each ADP owner runs its own scheduler adapter and worker, with local request metadata, allocation feedback, transfer completion and prefix-reservation identities. Adapters may share a compatible external content pool. TP without ADP retains its leader/broadcast behavior.
Integrated current main, including #17974. Accepted prefix loads participate in pending-transfer, cancellation, recovery and shutdown bookkeeping. Completions apply on the owning rank; canceled-load responses are delivered at an aligned gate before their routing entries and slots are released.
Pending saves continue progressing after the final response without new traffic. The existing routing exchange carries pending/error state, avoiding the periodic transfer-status vote when no owner has pending work. Every owner polls during recovery, including owners with ready batches, and recovery refreshes the hang detector.
Completion polling removes canceled synchronous prefix hits from the prepared batch and refreshes connector metadata before forwarding. Surviving requests retain their existing KV allocations.
The recovery path can now pad an owner after its final local prefix load is canceled and its slot is released. Draining control requests uniformly skip request broadcast across ADP owners while owner-local completions continue progressing. Regression tests cover both executor loops and a pending load on either owner.
Batch-start status votes also carry the post-preparation batch size. Both executor loops reuse that fleet/local readiness result, removing the subsequent queue allgather while preserving recovery and error/control exchanges. The initial scheduling vote remains because preparation may change batch readiness or fail.
The ADP filesystem example inherits the base leader's metadata, hash and path implementations, so compatible base/ADP examples share cache keys. Files created by the earlier ADP-only JSON key format are not reused and will be repopulated.
Failure policy and worker contract
ADP transfer deadlines are fatal to the executor fleet:
transfer_timeout_secdefaults to 600 seconds, and cancellation/shutdown may shorten the remaining deadline tocontrol_grace_sec, default 60 seconds. Expiration requires a process restart. These settings do not introduce a timeout on the non-ADP path. The generic connector API cannot safely abort DMA. Repeated request-only failures with indefinitely pinned pages/slots can exhaust serving capacity, and backend errors do not establish which transfers remain reliable. The bounded fatal policy stops further admission rather than continuing with a potentially damaged worker. Failed executors retain their pools through a process-wide strong reference, including after outer-worker garbage collection; thread/listener cleanup still runs while unsafe device/resource teardown is skipped. Rank-local failures use the existing crash watchdog and MPI abort/process-kill propagation.
Opted-in workers must support multiple metadata binds/load starts per iteration, each covering newly bound work, and cheap nonblocking completion polling. The documentation describes these requirements and the timeout policy.
Test coverage and validation
At
62d9c9ca6954f86bba30098ed6e26dc624ba169a: 192 source-isolated CPU cases passed across connector lifetime, ADP, shared-pool reuse, reservations and prefix completion. Pre-commit and DCO checks passed. The synchronous-cancellation regressions fail against the preceding executor in both overlap modes, with both a sole canceled request and surviving context/decode requests. They verify that the batch and connector compute metadata exclude canceled requests, responses flush before slot reuse, and surviving requests are not allocated again.
CPU regressions are included in
l0_cpu.yml. Six two-GPU H100 cases cover persistent-pool reuse, async recovery without dummy capacity and fatal transfer timeout with overlap enabled/disabled.Source isolation replaces native bindings, MPI, allocation and CUDA dependencies. These results are not native package, real MPI or GPU validation. No allocated GPU node was available for local runtime validation; CI confirmation on this head is pending.
CI #63164 on the preceding head failed in two H100 setup groups because
default-jrehad no installation candidate, before tests began. The H100 transceiver wrapper was interrupted by Jenkins and exited with SIGTERM/143. These are distinct from the B200 eviction timeout below.B200
TestKVCacheV2Llama::test_eviction[cuda_graph]timed out after 3600 seconds in CI #63164. The parent was blocked submitting a request throughsocket.send; the available log does not explain the worker's lack of progress. This case passed in prior PR runs #63040 (45.432 seconds) and #63008 (43.969 seconds). Its root cause remains unresolved. The earlier CI #63040 H100 DeepSeek startup timeout also lacks a confirmed cause: one worker readiness message was missing. Its H100 group failed setup in #63164, so that run does not establish a fix.
The integration helper imports persistent metadata from the base filesystem example; CPU round trips exercise it as both producer and consumer. Executor readiness fixtures use actual
ScheduledRequests. The docs example-generation step passes; a full Sphinx build was not run locally. Full native golden-manifest generation remains pending because local bindings are unavailable; the narrower connector-config/telemetry check matches the committed manifest.
Public connector settings retain the telemetry/privacy CODEOWNER review requirement.
Reviewed the PR checklist and documented validation limits.
