Fix: One intern state per conversation, prefix-shared message arrays, and a soft memory limit - #1590
Fixes#1541 with #1551's interleaved-conversations benchmark. 759 insertions across 10 files — inside the 700–900 estimate. All four measured costs of the store's memory, verified against a full 30-day archive before writing any of it.
Verification first (findings also posted on the issue)
Replaying this laptop's real archive (708 sessions, 111K events, 837 MB distinct message text): the premise holds — 29,900 conversation switches, 99% within-conversation prefix overlap, the issue's fixture at 60.5x — but the keyed tables alone buy 4.3% on real data, not the issue's projected 5.5x. The audit's number came from a 6,148-event snapshot dominated by one pathological session. What the full archive actually holds beyond distinct content: per-event message-header arrays (8.9M headers ≈ 427 MB on the fattest 20 sessions), tool-result headers (194 MB), Role strings (~15M fresh "user"/"assistant" copies), and ~1.4 GB of GC headroom + read-ratchet carrying a 1.4 GB live heap as 2.88 GB RSS (the live proxy, measured while verifying).
So this PR attacks all four, in one core/session/intern.go rewrite plus one config block.
The four fixes
1. One intern state per conversation (#1541's design). Base key = model + first message — which a conversation's single-message first event can register under and its later turns fall back to from a full-key miss (a full-key-only scheme silently orphaned the first event; found by the existing sharing tests). A sibling sharing the prompt (same-type subagents) splits off under the full key the moment their second messages disagree. LRU cap 32 (4 of 708 live sessions exceed it; eviction only costs sharing).
2. Prefix-shared arrays — the headers. Each conversation state holds one growing []InferenceMessage / []InferenceTool / []InferenceToolResult backing array, appended the way a transcript is; every event's slice points into it. A request's response-phase event — which repeats the request's conversation verbatim — now carries the very same backing array (pinned by test). A turn whose prefix stops matching (compaction) shares only the verified prefix and rebases. Safe under the snapshot contract the pipeline already documents ("slice fields are only assigned, never mutated in place, after the parser completes"); the interner only ever appends.
3. Role interning below the length threshold — one line per site through the existing internID, the same mechanism ToolUseIDs already use.
4. memory.limit_mb — the Go runtime's soft memory limit, applied once at boot, defaulting to 2048 for a local install, refused on reload like the other boot-only blocks. Soft by contract: near it the GC trades CPU for memory; a live heap that genuinely exceeds it still grows rather than failing anything. The failure mode of too low a limit is slowness, never a crash. It counts Go-managed memory only (CPEX's cgo allocations sit outside it).

Tests
The issue's acceptance (2 and 4 conversations against the single-conversation baseline), tunnel-opens interleaved per gotcha 14, response-phase array sharing, sibling split, compaction rebase-without-corruption, BenchmarkRetainedHeapInterleaved beside BenchmarkRetainedHeap, memory config + reload-refusal. All existing interning tests pass; core 75/75 and agentop 11/11 (agentop's snapshot decoder and the timeline use the same Interner and get the improvement for free); vet/gofmt/tidy clean; cmd/cortex builds with the full profile.
The two existing tests that pinned the old internals (table size, pins-no-duplicate) were adapted, not weakened: the table now counts the interned role (+1), and the pins-no-duplicate check collects roles — which the array legitimately references.
Deferred from review
shareTools' prefix loop records Description and Name into the rolled table but not Parameters, so a full-manifest match drops the schema canonicals and a later manifest reorder/edit keeps wire copies — missed sharing only, one line (both round-2 reviewers).
cortex-praxis loads the shared config, so memory.limit_mb parses there and is silently inert; paused binary, ships in no image.
limit_mb: 0 skips SetMemoryLimit, so an operator-set GOMEMLIMIT stays active while the docs say zero disables the limit — shared shape with cmd/cortex's boot guard.
/config on a local install shows no memory: block while the 2048 default is in force — the boot log is the only place it is visible. Deliberate (same convention as the archive default); a doc sentence could close it.
The prefix-share branch also makes empty-Messages inference events (legacy prompt-only /v1/completions) truncate-to-0 instead of wiping the conversation's shared array; an untested boundary.
TestIntern_SiblingConversationsSplit's a0 == b0 fatal message reads as accepting the condition it aborts on; reword or drop the fatal.
Local installations now have a default Go memory soft limit of 2048 MB. Configure memory.limit_mb to change the limit or set it to zero to disable it. Changes take effect after restarting the service and cannot be applied through a reload.
Improvements
Memory use is reduced when handling interleaved conversations, repeated message content, and events without content.
Documentation
Updated memory guidance explains the soft limit’s behavior and its scope; it does not cap CPEX allocations or prevent memory use from exceeding the limit.
… and a soft memory limit (#1541, #1551)
Verified against a full 30-day archive first (708 sessions, 111K
events): the interleaving premise holds (29,900 conversation switches,
99% within-conversation prefix overlap, the issue's fixture at 60.5x),
but the keyed tables alone buy only ~4% on real data — the bulk is
per-event message-header arrays (8.9M headers, 427 MB on the fattest
20 sessions), Role strings (~15M copies), and ~1.4 GB of GC headroom
plus read-ratchet carrying a 1.4 GB live heap as 2.88 GB of RSS. This
PR attacks all four measured costs:
- Interner keeps one state per conversation (base key = model + first
message, which a conversation's single-message first event can
register under and its later turns fall back to; a sibling sharing
the prompt splits off under the full key the moment their second
messages disagree), LRU-capped at 32. Alternating conversations no
longer evict each other's table: the issue's two-conversation
fixture goes from 60.5x the distinct content to 1.2x the
single-conversation heap (1.5x for four conversations).
- The message, tool and tool-result arrays are prefix-shared: each
conversation state holds one growing backing array appended the way
a transcript is, and every event's slice points into it — so a
request's response-phase event, which repeats the request's
conversation verbatim, carries the very same array, and per-event
headers cost one array per conversation instead of one per event.
A turn whose prefix stops matching (compaction) shares only the
verified prefix and rebases. Safe under the snapshot contract the
pipeline already documents: slice fields are assigned, never
mutated, after the parser completes — the interner only appends.
- Roles intern below the length threshold (internID): a Role string
repeats as hard as message content and was ~15M fresh copies on the
measured archive.
- memory.limit_mb applies the Go runtime's soft memory limit at boot,
defaulting to 2048 for a local install and refused on reload like
the other boot-only blocks. Soft by contract: near it the GC trades
CPU for memory, and a live heap that genuinely exceeds it still
grows rather than failing anything.
Tests: the issue's interleaved acceptance (2 and 4 conversations
against the single-conversation baseline), tunnel-opens interleaved
per gotcha 14, response-phase array sharing, sibling split, compaction
rebase, BenchmarkRetainedHeapInterleaved (1.14 MB/session for two
conversations + tunnel opens at 300 turns, against 0.51 single — the
honest cost of holding two conversations' content), memory config and
reload-refusal tests. agentop and the timeline use the same Interner
and get the improvement for free; both modules' suites pass.

Walkthrough
The PR adds conversation-scoped interning that shares event content across interleaved conversations. It also adds a configurable Go runtime soft memory limit, applies it at startup, and rejects memory configuration changes during reload.
Changes: Conversation-scoped event interning
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Conversation state and key selection core/session/intern.go, core/session/intern_test.go
The interner now maintains per-conversation string tables and an LRU limit of 32 states. Tests cover string thresholds, table contents, and the new state model.
Event slice and content sharing core/session/intern.go, core/session/intern_interleaved_test.go
InternEvent shares prefixes of message, tool, and result slices, and interns their content. Tests check backing-array sharing, sibling conversations, compaction, and truncated histories.
Interleaving and retention validation core/session/intern_interleaved_test.go
Tests measure retained heap for interleaved conversations and contentless events. A benchmark covers interleaved turns with contentless session-request events.
Config adds memory.limit_mb. An absent block defaults to 2048 MB for local installs and zero elsewhere; a configured non-positive limit disables the runtime limit.
Startup application and reload validation cmd/cortex/main.go, core/reloader/reloader.go, core/reloader/reloader_test.go
Startup applies and logs a positive memory limit. Reload validation rejects changes to the memory configuration.
Memory and interning guidance docs/laptop-service.md, CLAUDE.md
The service documentation describes the memory setting and restart behavior. CLAUDE.md updates memory-limit and conversation-scoped interning guidance.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review d2ddb
The change reduces retained memory for interleaved conversations and adds a soft Go memory limit. Remaining issues are narrow: the limit can override or fail to override an environment setting, cortex-envoy ignores it, tool schema sharing is partly lost in some cases, and some tests and docs are imprecise. These are worth fixing but are not serious merge blockers.

Explanation
The changes satisfy the coding requirements in #1541. core/session/intern.go keeps bounded state per conversation, preserves sharing across contentless events, and shares message, tool, and tool-result prefixes. It also interns repeated short roles. core/session/intern_interleaved_test.go adds the required interleaved benchmark with tunnel-open events and tests the two- and four-conversation cases. It also tests response-phase array sharing, sibling splitting, compaction, and truncated histories. The supplied validation reports that existing interning tests pass.

…nical elements
Fixes review: the #1590 review round's three findings.
- The boot-time cfg.Memory assignment refused every config reload on a local
install (validateReloadable compared the mutated active config against a
fresh disk load): the 2048 default is now computed by
MemoryLimitBytes(localInstall), never stored.
- The intern rebuild path copied the arriving event's prefix strings instead
of the canonical ones, and a truncated re-send re-copied the whole
conversation: a full-prefix match now returns the shared prefix itself, and
the rebuild copies the verified prefix from the state's array.
- The package-global test Interner moved into its test (shared mutable
state across tests).

Cover the sibling-split branch with a seeded base state.
The current test starts every conversation with two messages. Each conversation therefore registers under its own full key, so the base-key split is never reached. A single one-message seed is not enough because the split condition also requires the base state to already contain two messages.
Seed task-a with one message, extend it to two messages, then append task-b's differing two-message event.
No other inspected test in core/session establishes this base-key state followed by a differing second message.

Keep an operator-set GOMEMLIMIT and honor an explicit zero.
On a local install with no memory block, the default at line 650 replaces a GOMEMLIMIT that the operator set for the process. A lower operator limit is raised to 2048 MiB. An explicit limit_mb: 0 also leaves that environment limit active, although the MemoryConfig contract describes zero as "off". Keep the local default from replacing an environment limit. Map an explicit zero to math.MaxInt64, which disables the runtime limit.

Make these checks measure retained store memory and the correct distinct volume.
heapAfterGC() returns process-wide absolute HeapAlloc. The interleaved test compares absolute values from separate runs, so the result includes unrelated heap state. The two-conversation case can pass with sharing disabled because its no-sharing content is only about 2× the one-conversation content, below the 2.5× limit. The four-conversation case may catch the regression, but only depending on unrelated heap usage.
The tunnel-open test counts resent messages as distinct content. With 30 turns, each conversation sends 465 messages but has only 30 distinct messages. Both conversations therefore send 930 messages but contain 60 distinct messages. The fixture produces about 31.5 KB of distinct content and about 487.7 KB of resent content. The current denominator is about 483.6 KB, so a no-sharing implementation can remain near 1× and pass the ratio > 3 check.
Use a heap delta, as BenchmarkRetainedHeapInterleaved does, and base the denominator on the 60 distinct messages:

Record Parameters in the prefix-match loop, as the tail and rebuild paths do.
The tail path (Line 453) and the rebuild path (Line 464) intern Parameters. The prefix loop only records Description and Name. After one event matches its whole manifest, the next table therefore has no schema strings, and st.strings = next drops them. If a later event reorders or edits the manifest, the rebuild path cannot find the canonical schemas. It then keeps that event's own wire copy of every schema. The comment above this code says schemas are the largest remaining duplicate, so this misses the main saving on that path.

Summary
I checked the per-conversation keying, prefix sharing, and LRU logic in core/session/intern.go closely. The interner never writes an index below a length that a published event references. All writes happen under the store mutex inside appendLocked. The LRU map and list stay consistent past the cap. I also ran an ad-hoc stress test: 45 conversations, siblings sharing a system prompt, compaction rewrites, tunnel-opens between the two phases of each request, 1,620 events. Content was byte-correct for every event, with convs == lru == 32 at the end. The memory-limit wiring is right too: MemoryLimitBytes computes the local default instead of storing it, so reloads keep working, and memory.* is refused in validateReloadable, which cortex-envoy shares. I found no blocking issues.
One hardening suggestion: the shared slices come back with spare capacity, so an append by a reader would write over a later event's messages. I reproduced this; details are inline. The fix costs nothing, and I checked it against the existing tests and benchmarks. The rest are small config and doc points.

The remaining failures also fail on main in my sandbox: module download EOFs for opa/contextguru, a proxy 403 in tokenbroker/client, and no systemd user bus for two agentop tests. BenchmarkRetainedHeapInterleaved reproduces 1.137 MB/session against 0.504 for BenchmarkRetainedHeap.

suggestion: The slices returned here (st.msgs[:k]) and at the two return st.msgs sites keep the shared array's spare capacity. An event stored at turn N can have cap > len, and the slots past its len are the next turns' messages. A reader that does append(ev.Inference.Messages, x) on a stored event therefore writes over a later event's message in the store. The snapshot contract ("only assigned, never mutated in place") does not clearly forbid append, and the old slices.Clone made it safe.
I reproduced it on this branch with 5 single-conversation turns, then _ = append(v.Events[2].Inference.Messages, clobber). Event 3's Messages[3] became clobber in the store itself, visible on a fresh View. No in-tree consumer appends today (I grepped), so this is a latent hazard, not a live bug. It is still the kind that surfaces silently in agentop or a plugin later.
Full slice expressions close it at no cost. Writes still go only to indices nobody's len covers, and an append on a returned slice reallocates instead:
Apply the same in shareTools and shareToolResults. I ran it locally: core/session/... and core/sessionapi pass, TestIntern_ResponsePhaseEventSharesTheArray still holds (same SliceData), and BenchmarkRetainedHeapInterleaved is unchanged at 1.137 MB/session. A test pinning "append on a stored event's slice does not change another event" would lock it in.

suggestion: debug.SetMemoryLimit replaces whatever the runtime read from GOMEMLIMIT. On a local install with no memory: block, an operator who exported GOMEMLIMIT=4GiB in the service environment gets that value silently replaced by the computed 2048 default. This is the mirror image of the limit_mb: 0 case listed under Deferred. Consider skipping the computed default when os.Getenv("GOMEMLIMIT") != "", so an explicit environment setting wins over an implicit default and only an explicit limit_mb overrides it. Alternatively, log that the env value was overridden. Not blocking.

nit: A negative limit_mb is silently treated as "off". A typo like -2048 would disable the limit with no signal. A MemoryConfig.Validate() that rejects < 0, wired in next to the other block validators in Load, would surface it at boot.

nit: "The table pins no content of its own" holds without trimming. With session.max_events set, a conversation whose events have all been trimmed still has its convState (array plus last-event strings) held in convs until it falls out of the LRU. That is at most 32 states, so it is bounded, but the comment should say so: "pins nothing beyond up to maxConversations conversations' last arrays".

nit: No test drives the interner past maxConversations, so the eviction path (delete(in.convs, in.lru[0]) and the lru bookkeeping in touchLRU) has no coverage. I ran an ad-hoc test with 45 interleaved conversations, including siblings and compaction, and it checks out: content stays correct and len(convs) == len(lru) == 32. A small test that also asserts every lru key is in convs would keep it that way.
Main moved under the branch (#1590–#1596, touching the CONNECT path and
the session store). Git reports no textual conflicts; verified the
merged tree builds and both touched packages stay green — the trusted-pin
case in handleConnect and appendTunnelOpen's SessionSource condition sit
where the dead-origin rework (#1595/#1596) left them.

Fixes #1541 with #1551's interleaved-conversations benchmark.
So this PR attacks all four, in one
core/session/intern.gorewrite plus one config block.
Each conversation state holds one growing
[]InferenceMessage/[]InferenceTool/[]InferenceToolResultbacking array, appended the way a transcript is; every event's slice points into it. A request's response-phase event — which repeats the request's conversation verbatim — now carries the very same backing array (pinned by test). A turn whose prefix stops matching (compaction) shares only the verified prefix and rebases. Safe under the snapshot contract the pipeline already documents ("slice fields are only assigned, never mutated in place, after the parser completes"); the interner only ever appends.3. Role interning below the length threshold — one line per site through the existing
internID, the same mechanism ToolUseIDs already use.4.
memory.limit_mb— the Go runtime's soft memory limit, applied once at boot, defaulting to 2048 for a local install, refused on reload like the other boot-only blocks. Soft by contract: near it the GC trades CPU for memory; a live heap that genuinely exceeds it still grows rather than failing anything. The failure mode of too low a limit is slowness, never a crash. It counts Go-managed memory only (CPEX's cgo allocations sit outside it). Results

The issue's acceptance (2 and 4 conversations against the single-conversation baseline), tunnel-opens interleaved per gotcha 14, response-phase array sharing, sibling split, compaction rebase-without-corruption,
BenchmarkRetainedHeapInterleavedbesideBenchmarkRetainedHeap, memory config + reload-refusal. All existing interning tests pass; core 75/75 and agentop 11/11 (agentop's snapshot decoder and the timeline use the sameInternerand get the improvement for free); vet/gofmt/tidy clean;cmd/cortexbuilds with the full profile. The two existing tests that pinned the old internals (table size, pins-no-duplicate) were adapted, not weakened: the table now counts the interned role (+1), and the pins-no-duplicate check collects roles — which the array legitimately references.
