Fix: Run Cortex at normal priority, and keep a timeline cached until its session changes - #1524
Opening the Timeline pane on a long archived session fails. On a 3,115-event session it timed out with context deadline exceeded and drew nothing.
The proxy runs at background priority. The launchd plist sets ProcessType=Background, which keeps Cortex on the efficiency cores. Decoding one 16 MB archive segment took 1.0s at normal priority and 3.9–4.1s under taskpolicy -b. That session's timeline then took 5.3s cold on the live service, past agentop's 5s fetch deadline.
The timeline cache expired after a minute. It did so because Build ages unanswered requests against the current time. An archived session never gains an event, yet it was decoded again every minute.
Three cases had no correct state. agentop's pane couldn't tell a stream cut mid-reply, a retry, or a background shell job from idle time.
#1519 named dropping ProcessType=Background as a follow-up.
Fix
Normal priority. Drop ProcessType from the launchd plist (cmd_service_platform.go). launchd applies it only when it loads a job. agentop setup rewrites and reloads the plist on every upgrade, and make dev-install always does (--restart), so installed services pick it up there.
Cache until the session changes. The clock-dependent step is now Timeline.LoseUnanswered, run on each read's copy. A cached timeline is kept until the session records a new event, and an archived one is decoded once.
No finish reason is an error. The proxy records a stream cut mid-reply as the 200 it started as. A refusal is an error too, as Turn.Error's doc already said.
resent marks a retry: a call that sends its agent's previous call's conversation again, unchanged.
jobs are background shell commands. Each runs from the Command running in background with ID: … result to the first <task-notification> naming that id. The tool call ends at the acknowledgement, so without this an agent waiting on a job looked idle.
docs/session-api.md describes the new cache rule and fields. Both new fields are omitted when empty, so an older agentop ignores them.
What this does not do
agentop reads only resent so far: the gap after a failed call is drawn as retrying only when the next call re-sent it. The other pane fixes come in a follow-up PR: colouring collapsed gaps by their state, retrying a failed first load, scrolling hidden hosts, listing a tool still running in a cell, and treating unexplained main-row time as waiting on the user.
The first cold open is still about a second. Nearly all of it is JSON decoding of message bodies. A reader that skips them is a separate change.
The proxy still records a cut stream as a 200 with no error (forwardproxy/server.go). This PR classifies it on read; recording it at the source would change /v1/usage error counts and is a separate change.
Deferred from review:
The Responses API reports a content filter as status: "incomplete", which this PR leaves as not an error, since incomplete is also a token-limit cut.
A gap after a failed call that nothing re-sent is drawn blank, not as waiting on the user. That comes with the pane follow-up's rule for unexplained main-row time.
Verification
New tests:
A reply with no finish reason, and a refusal, are errors.
resent is set on an unchanged re-send, and not on a call that adds a message, a compaction, or an agent's first call.
A background job runs from its acknowledgement to its notification, and an assistant quoting the marker doesn't end it.
LoseUnanswered on a cached timeline matches a fresh Build.
A cache hit an hour on with no new event is served without a rebuild, ages the unanswered request, and leaves the cached copy untouched.
The plist has no ProcessType.
Each new test fails when the line it covers is reverted.
TestRealSessionWithBackgroundAgents now counts 6 failed turns, not 5. The new one is a 200 that streamed for 40s with no finish reason, which its agent's next call re-sent.
core/session/... and core/sessionapi pass with -race, as do cmd/agentop, ./tui and ./apiclient. vet and gofmt are clean, and golangci-lint --new-from-rev reports nothing on the changed lines.
Not yet measured on the live service. The 1.0s vs 3.9–4.1s figure is from a decode under taskpolicy -b, not from this build run as the launchd job.
…its session changes
The launchd plist set ProcessType=Background, which keeps the proxy on the
efficiency cores. Every request an agent sends waits on that process, and
reading back an archived session showed it most: decoding one 16MB segment
took 1.0s at normal priority and 3.9-4.1s under `taskpolicy -b`. A
3,115-event archived session's timeline took 5.3s cold on the live service,
past agentop's 5s fetch deadline, so the pane showed "context deadline
exceeded" and nothing else. launchd applies ProcessType only when it loads
a job, and agentop setup rewrites and reloads the plist on every upgrade
and on `make dev-install`, so installed services pick this up there.
The timeline cache expired after a minute because Build aged unanswered
requests against now. That aging is now LoseUnanswered, run on each read's
copy, so an entry is kept until the session records a new event and an
archived session is decoded once rather than once a minute.
Three timeline fields, for agentop to read:
- A response that ended with no finish reason is an error. The proxy
records a stream cut mid-reply as the 200 it started as; 117 of 33,227
turns across 651 archived sessions were one. A refusal is an error too,
as Turn.Error's doc already said.
- Resent marks a call that sent its agent's previous call's conversation
again unchanged: a retry. It tells time spent retrying from time waiting
on the user, which a fixed cap on "retrying" got wrong.
- Jobs are background shell commands, from the "Command running in
background with ID" result to the task-notification naming that id. The
tool call ends at the acknowledgement, so without this an agent waiting
on a job looked idle; 535 jobs in local transcripts left 7.0h that way.

The change updates session timelines to record unchanged resends and background shell jobs, revises turn-error and unanswered-request handling, and changes timeline cache reuse. It also narrows retry-gap classification and removes the launchd ProcessType=Background setting.

Summary
Build timeline turns, jobs, and host spans core/session/timeline/*, docs/session-api.md
Timeline construction records background shell jobs and unchanged resends. It classifies additional turn errors and moves unanswered-request aging to LoseUnanswered. Tests cover these classifications and job spans.
Reuse cached timelines and age unanswered requests core/sessionapi/timeline.go, core/sessionapi/timeline_test.go, core/session/timeline/timeline_test.go, docs/session-api.md
Cache reuse no longer depends on idle age while the newest event remains unchanged. Returned copies age unanswered requests without mutating the cached timeline.
Classify retry gaps in the timeline view cmd/agentop/tui/timeline_layout.go, cmd/agentop/tui/timeline_pane_test.go, cmd/agentop/README.md
The view counts a gap as retry time only when an error is followed by an unchanged resend. The sample, test, and documentation reflect this condition.

Include tool results in the resend comparison.
When a request adds inf.ToolResults but keeps the same inf.Messages, this condition sets Resent even though the request contains new tool output. The background-job test uses that request shape. As a result, the API reports a retry, and waits can classify a gap after a failed call as retry time incorrectly. Compare tool results as well as messages before setting Resent. Invalidate cached timelines when archived history is trimmed.
If archive retention removes an oldest segment without changing the newest event, this check continues to serve the cached full timeline. The archive-prefix path checks OldestSeq for this case, but a timeline cache hit never reaches that check. An archive-only session can therefore keep showing removed spans and tool previews until its cache entry is evicted. Include an archive-history marker in the cache identity, or invalidate the entry when retention changes that history. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Drops ProcessType=Background from the launchd plist, caches a timeline until its session records a new event (with LoseUnanswered re-run on each served copy as the one clock-dependent step), and adds resent, jobs, and empty-finish/refusal errors. The copy discipline is careful (LoseUnanswered only replaces a nil End; clone covers Hosts and Jobs), and the tests target the right things. Two non-blocking suggestions inline: cache eviction now that hits no longer refresh at, and the breadth of the empty-finish-is-error rule.

suggestion: With the one-minute bound gone, a hit no longer refreshes anything, but put still evicts by at (compute time). Before, entries were rebuilt every minute so at tracked recency; now an archived session computed an hour ago and polled every second is the first evicted when a 33rd session is opened, and its next read is the ~1s cold decode this PR set out to avoid. Consider bumping a last-used stamp on a hit (like the prefix cache's c.uses) and evicting by that.

suggestion:failedFinish[""] makes any answered call with no finish reason an error — including when c.resp.Inference is nil, or for a backend the parser can't extract a finish from (unknown dialect, unparseable/encoded body). The cut-stream case is real, but a provider/gateway that never reports a finish would now draw every call red, and an older agentop draws every post-error gap as retrying. Consider limiting the empty-finish rule to c.resp.Inference != nil with a 2xx status, or note which parsers guarantee it's set.
