Closes #1560

Summary

  • add copy json and save json to the Studio selection export menu
  • preserve JSON values as real JSON types instead of stringifying everything
  • export a single selected row as one object instead of a one-item array

Validation

  • pnpm typecheck
  • pnpm test -- ui/studio/views/table/selection-export.test.ts
  • validated in local demo

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added JSON export options for selected data.
    • Copy selections as JSON to the clipboard or save them as .json files.
    • JSON exports preserve visible columns, current column order, and pinned-column layout.
    • Multiple selected rows export as an array; a single selected row exports as an object.
    • Object-valued cells are preserved, with safe conversions for values such as bigint and undefined.
  • Documentation

    • Updated selection export documentation to cover JSON support and formatting.

Walkthrough

Studio table selection exports now support JSON for clipboard copying and file downloads. JSON output uses visible column IDs as object keys, preserves nested values, normalizes unsupported values such as bigint and undefined, and emits a single object or an array based on row count. The export menu, filenames, MIME types, tests, feature documentation, and release changeset were updated.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk | 🟡 Moderate · up to a2cec

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to a2cec

A single-row export does not meet the requested array format, and introspection reload failures can leave users without an error notice. The Save JSON menu action also lacks a test of its download behavior; address these issues before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a2cec

The JSON actions reuse existing selection and export controls without adding database access or privileges. No material security concern was found in the inspected flow, but wider consumer and authorization coverage is incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is the current user's selected, already loaded table values reaching that browser's clipboard or downloaded file. The new format does not demonstrate broader row access, cross-tenant access, or added service authority; upstream authorization guarantees were not independently established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Table values flow through the existing user-invoked selection-export boundary. The full comparison adds JSON arguments to existing handlers, not new query calls, privileged APIs, credentials, or remote destinations. Structured object values were already included in CSV and Markdown through JSON stringification.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Serialization completes synchronously before either export side effect, so serialization failure precedes clipboard writes or download creation. Clipboard rejection is caught and logged without changing table data. Normal downloads remove the temporary anchor and revoke its object URL. These handlers and their failure ordering predate the JSON additions; they introduce no database transaction or recovery state.

Explanation

Issue #1560 requires Copy JSON and Save JSON to export selected rows as a JSON array of objects. The menu actions, .json filename, JSON MIME type, keyed visible columns, nested value normalization, and header-toggle independence are implemented. The JSON serializer returns a single object when exactly one row is selected: JSON.stringify(records.length === 1 ? records[0] : records, null, 2). The related tests also require this object output. This does not meet the one-item-array requirement in #1560.

264-322: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Loosened assertions in the JSON download test suggest unreset mock state between tests.

The CSV test (Lines 281, 291) asserts mock.calls[0] and toHaveBeenCalledTimes(1) exactly, while the JSON test right after it uses mock.calls.at(-1) (Line 312) and toBeGreaterThanOrEqual(1) (Line 320). This asymmetry implies URL.createObjectURL/click spies aren't cleared between it blocks, so the JSON test's own call could be masked by accumulated calls from the prior test — toBeGreaterThanOrEqual(1) would still pass even if click weren't invoked in this test at all.

Add vi.restoreAllMocks()/vi.clearAllMocks() in a beforeEach/afterEach so both tests can use precise, order-independent assertions (toHaveBeenCalledTimes(1), mock.calls[0]).

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep single-row JSON exports as arrays.

The requested export shape is an array of row objects, including when one row is selected. The reported single-row output is a bare object. This makes both JSON actions produce a cardinality-dependent top-level type. Keep the serializer output as an array for copy and save.

ui/studio/views/table/ActiveTableView.tsx:895-896
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Propagate introspection refetch errors to useTableReload.

useIntrospection returns TanStack Query's default refetch. When adapter.introspect fails, that promise resolves with an error result instead of rejecting. useTableReload therefore can skip its catch, continue to the row refetch, and leave reloadError unset.

The active-table refetch already uses throwOnError: true. Handle the introspection result before refetching rows:

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add an ActiveTableView test for save json.

The tests only check that save json appears in the menu. They do not select it or assert the JSON download. A wiring error in this menu action could pass the current tests because the JSON download helper is tested separately.

Add an ActiveTableView test that selects save json and asserts the downloaded JSON content, MIME type, and filename.
