When TiKV builds FM sketches from a Bernoulli sample of rows, it sends the number of sampled rows and keeps hashes seen once apart from repeated hashes. TiDB merges the responses of one request hash by hash, so a value seen once in two Regions is repeated, and estimates NDV with GEE: d + (sqrt(T/S) - 1) * f1, where T is the visible rows and S the sampled rows. The estimate stays within the non-NULL rows. TiKV scales NULL counts and sizes to all rows, so they keep the existing additive merge. ANALYZE allocates the sketches that collect the responses before the first response says whether TiKV sampled, so an empty sketch becomes sampled when a sampled sketch merges into it. GEE cannot see from a sample that values never repeat. From 5% of the rows it estimates a unique column at about 1/4.5 of its rows. The row count that ANALYZE takes as the NDV of unique values keeps them exact. Signed-off-by: 0xPoe <poe.liu@pm.me>
MemoryUsage counted 8 bytes for each hash, the size of the key alone. A Go map takes about 30 bytes for each entry, so the estimate was almost four times too low: a sketch with 10,000 hashes takes about 296 KB, and the estimate was 80 KB. Count the struct, the map header, and 30 bytes for each entry. The estimate goes to the memory tracker of a full stats load, which the global stats merge and the stats dump use. What problem does this PR solve?
Issue Number: ref #67449
Problem Summary: TiDB cannot use the FM sketches that TiKV builds from sampled rows (tikv/tikv#20106). This is the first part of sampling-based NDV (#71510), split from #71520.
What changed and how does it work?
TiDB does not request sampling yet, so the only behavior change is the larger memory estimate.
