Fix: Sanitize corrupted PCP metrics before embedding in HTML report - #319
The CI-Doctor HTML report fails to load in browsers when PCP performance metrics contain corrupted numeric values. Specifically, values like 0.9XXXXXX999999999 (where 'X' characters appear in numeric data) result in invalid JSON being embedded in the report's window.REPORT_DATA script tag.
Impact: When browsers attempt to parse the invalid JSON, the entire report page appears blank/broken, making CI analysis impossible.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.

Walkthrough
The report loader sanitizes parsed metrics before storing them. List-valued fields retain non-boolean integers and floats; other values become None. The sanitizer warns when it replaces values.

Summary
Sanitize metrics before caching plugins/shared/scripts/create-report.py
New helpers sanitize list-valued metric fields and warn when they replace values. _load_job_metrics sanitizes parsed JSON before caching it.
The reported sanitization changes do not introduce a remaining merge-blocking risk.

Reject non-finite values before serialization.
The sanitizer preserves NaN and Infinity. It also converts an overflowing numeric string such as "1e1000" to inf. The latter is newly introduced by this change. json.dumps then emits nonstandard NaN or Infinity tokens because it does not set allow_nan=False. Replace non-finite values with None and add strict JSON serialization coverage.
The existing NaN/Infinity path predates this change, so the new regression is the string-to-infinity conversion.

Test the production sanitizer and both validation outcomes.
This script calls its copied _sanitize_metrics, not the function changed in create-report.py. A production regression can therefore leave this script passing. The script also checks replacement of one invalid value but does not assert preservation of valid values. Call the production implementation and assert both outcomes, including timestamp preservation. Per CONTRIBUTING.md: “Test validation logic: regex patterns, parsing rules, and validation functions require tests with positive and negative cases.” (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Exclude booleans from numeric samples.
If a metrics file contains true in a numeric array, json.load produces True. Python treats True as an int, so this check preserves the boolean instead of sanitizing it. Use an exact numeric type check so corrupted boolean samples cannot enter the report as measurements.

Warn when sanitization changes a metric.
If an array contains a corrupted sample, this assignment replaces it without a warning. Operators cannot identify which loaded metric contained bad data. The PR explicitly requires warnings for corrupted values. Emit a warning with the metric key when sanitization changes an array.

Updated _sanitize_metrics() to preserve the timestamps array unchanged. The timestamps contain string labels like "2026-10-15 02:47:24" that are used for chart X-axis labels in the report's PCP charts.
Changes:
Added check: if key == 'timestamps': continue
Only numeric metric arrays (user, sys, iowait, idle, etc.) are now sanitized
Timestamp strings are preserved exactly as they appear in the source data
## Problem
The CI-Doctor HTML report fails to load in browsers when PCP performance
metrics contain corrupted numeric values. Specifically, values like
`0.9XXXXXX999999999` result in invalid JSON being embedded in the report's
`window.REPORT_DATA` script tag, causing the page to appear blank.
Example failure:
- Job: periodic-ci-openshift-eng-edge-tooling-main-microshift-ci-doctor/2114975694084640768
- Corruption at char 1,075,042 in window.REPORT_DATA
## Solution
Add simple sanitization to `plugins/shared/scripts/create-report.py`:
1. `_sanitize_metric_array(arr)`: Replace invalid values with None
- Excludes booleans from numeric check (isinstance(True, int) is True)
- Excludes non-finite floats (NaN, Infinity, -Infinity)
- Returns sanitized array and whether changes were made
2. `_sanitize_metrics(dict)`: Apply sanitization to numeric metric arrays
- Preserves 'timestamps' array unchanged (string labels for charts)
- Logs warnings when values are sanitized
3. Modified `_load_job_metrics()`: Call sanitization after loading JSON
4. Added `allow_nan=False` to json.dumps as final guard
The fix ensures all metric values are valid finite numbers or null,
while preserving timestamp strings for chart labels.
Before fix:
JSON error: Expecting ',' delimiter at char 1075045
After fix:
✓ Valid JSON (strict mode, no NaN/Infinity)
✓ Report loads successfully
✓ Corrupted values replaced with null
✓ Non-finite floats (NaN, Infinity) replaced with null
✓ Timestamps preserved as strings for chart labels
✓ Booleans excluded from numeric values
✓ Warnings logged when sanitization occurs

This ensures the report generates strict, standard-compliant JSON that browsers can always parse, even when PCP data contains non-finite values from data collection errors or overflows.
