Resolves: #35103

Spanning barlines currently share one appearance inside the staff and between staves. This adds Span style directly in Barline Properties, allowing solid in-staff barlines with solid, dashed or dotted inter-staff connections. It affects only the selected barlines, so different regions and staff pairs can have independent appearances. Span to next staff is also visible without expanding Show more.

The options are Follow barline type (the default), Solid, Dashed and Dotted. Users can select a region by clicking its first barline and Shift-clicking the last, or use Select > Similar on this staff for the whole staff. Styles persist in MSCX/MSCZ and support undo/redo, copying and measure rewriting.

The appearance change applies to ordinary single, dashed and dotted barlines, both within measures and at measure ends. Double, final, repeat and heavy barlines and initial system barlines retain their existing appearance. MusicXML does not preserve this independent connection appearance.

Barline span editing

  • Dragging the handle or pressing Up/Down on an inherited end-of-measure barline changes the staff default and preserves existing overrides. On a barline with its own span, those controls edit only that barline. Ctrl+drag and mid-measure edits act locally.
  • Span to next staff edits the selected barlines. Editing an end-of-measure barline back to the staff default restores inheritance.
  • Disconnecting a barline hides Span style. Reconnecting it brings back the saved style.

Validation

  • Application and engraving tests built locally on Windows x64 with MSVC and Qt 6.10.2.
  • 197 local tests pass; 6 existing disabled tests remain disabled. Coverage includes span-style XML/property conversions, individual and multiple selection, contiguous selection, default/override precedence, mixed connected/disconnected patterns, reset, undo/redo, copying between staves, instrument reordering, mid-measure persistence, time-signature changes, measure rewriting, copy/paste, parts, linked staves, visibility and read/write/reset regressions.
  • Five vtest scores cover independent appearances, staff geometry, hidden staves, special barlines, mid-measure bars and mixed connected/disconnected regions. All 10 native draw-data comparisons pass locally at normal and reduced page sizes.
  • A new original four-staff demonstration score combines inherited connections, explicit connected/disconnected overrides and different appearance regions. It is exported locally to MSCZ, PDF, SVG and PNG.
  • The contributor's earlier manual testing identified the grip/undo interaction addressed here. The revised default/override behavior has automated coverage; a fresh full manual matrix for this proposal is still pending.
  • A local GUI smoke check verified the visible controls, staff-default grip editing and undo, and single-barline editing from Properties. The test edits were undone.
  • Remote CI checks are left to the contributor to inspect manually.

Related requests #24677, #25698 and #32239 are documented in the linked issue; this PR does not resolve those broader requests.

Walkthrough

The change adds configurable default, solid, dashed, and dotted styles for barline connections between staves. It adds inherited and explicit span state, XML and property conversion, layout and rendering support, and controls in the barline properties panel. New tests and score fixtures cover style conversion, persistence, editing, undo/redo, barline types, and staff geometry.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to e3fe8

Repeat-end toggling and measure rewrites can leave barlines with the wrong type or connection. A mid-measure connection can also be drawn wrongly after a staff-type change. Fix these before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to f3894

The new setting controls score appearance and is validated when loaded or edited. The examined changes do not introduce privileged operations or broader access to data. Normal save/load and undo/reset behavior are supported by regression assertions, but interrupted multi-staff edits and compatibility with older versions are not fully established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The examined new flow affects eligible barline connections belonging to staff objects in the loaded score. File-supplied values reach local layout and painting through the existing score-reading path; no new privileged or cross-service sink was identified in this flow. This does not establish complete safety of the surrounding score parser or numeric geometry handling.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The score-file value crosses into model state only after range validation. Panel edits additionally pass through the validating Staff setter. The changed rendering helper is static and consumes derived layout data; the new QML exposure provides appearance choices, not a new external service entrypoint.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Default initialization, rejection of invalid style values and resetting derived layout style constrain stale or malformed appearance state. Normal recovery has regression assertions, but interrupted multi-owner edits and concurrent mutation remain unverified. The inspected flow does not establish a resulting security-control failure.

Explanation

The PR implements issue #35103. It adds Follow barline type, Solid, Dashed, and Dotted span styles. It preserves the in-staff appearance and applies the independent style to eligible ordinary single, dashed, and dotted barlines, including mid-measure and measure-end cases. Existing span controls remain active. Special barlines retain their existing behavior. MSCX/MSCZ persistence, undo/redo, copying, staff defaults, selection, and automated tests are included. The selected-barline override model extends the staff-wide default without removing the requested staff-level behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed engraving model, rendering, property panel, serialization, editing paths, fixtures, and tests directly support issue #35103. The per-selected-barline controls, inheritance handling, and staff-default operations support the requested connection styling. The PR explicitly excludes independent MusicXML preservation and related requests #24677, #25698, and #32239.

Copy the span flag with the connection style.

Staff::init(const Staff*) copies m_barLineSpanStyle, but does not copy m_barLineSpan. When Staff::clone() copies a staff with a spanning barline, the clone keeps the default false span flag, so the copied connection style has no visible effect. Copy m_barLineSpan in this initialization path.

Mid-measure barlines ignore the connection style

  1. Open the attached score mid-measure-barlines.mscz.zip
  2. Look at the between-staff barlines segments in b.2–4 and b.6

Notice: The end-of-bar barlines use the chosen connection, but the mid-measure barlines don't (the first occurrence marked in red). A normal mid-measure barline still has a solid connection, and a dashed or dotted one is dashed or dotted all the way through.
Expected: Mid-measure barlines should follow the staff's connection style too.

Anything testing drawing should be a vtest, not tests like these.

Apply the staff connection style to mid-measure barlines as well as
end barlines. Add a dedicated property type and named XML conversion,
retaining read compatibility with saved prototype scores.

Replace drawing assertions with four visual-test scores and keep unit
coverage for persistence, conversions, undo and instrument reordering.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the next-measure staff bottom out of mid-measure connections.

If a one-line staff changes to a taller staff in the next measure on the same system, a mid-measure barline also enters this branch because its rtick() is nonzero. This assignment moves spanStartY to the next staff type’s bottom. The current measure’s connection then retains the barline type below its current staff instead of using the selected connection style. Apply the next-measure bottom only to a barline at that measure boundary.

Thanks for the detailed review and the reproduction score. I've addressed the feedback in commit 59d7185:

  • Mid-measure barlines now follow the staff’s connection style, just like end-of-measure barlines. I checked the attached score locally; the connections in measures 2–4 and 6 now render as expected.
  • Added a dedicated P_TYPE::BARLINE_SPAN_STYLE and TConv mapping. XML now writes named values rather than integers. Reading the initial prototype’s numeric values remains supported for previously saved test scores.
  • Removed the unnecessary <algorithm> include.
  • Replaced the drawing-specific unit assertions with four vtest scores covering connection styles, mid-measure barlines, special barlines, staff geometry, hidden staves and disconnected spans.

The application builds locally, all 12 barline tests and 73 selected regression tests pass, and eight local draw-data comparisons pass at normal and reduced page sizes. Special barlines render identically before and after this correction.

@aaronFortuno Thanks for working on this! We reviewed internally and would like to request a few changes:

Behavior:

  • Rather than "Connection style (all measures)" affecting the entire staff, it should only affect the barlines that are explicitly selected. This way they can be customized as needed. Users can make use of Select > Similar on this staff to affect the whole staff at once via properties.

UI:

  • Rename "Connection style (all measures)" to "Span style" and remove the helper text you added
  • Move "Span to next staff" and "Span style" up out of the "Show more" section so that they're more discoverable.

So it should look like this (excuse the screenshot mockup!)

@avvvvve Thanks for the guidance. The requested UI changes and per-selected-barline Span style are implemented locally, but I have not pushed this revision yet. Testing exposed an interaction with the existing span grip that I would like to clarify first.

The grip can change the staff-wide span default, while Span to next staff and Span style in Properties edit the selected barlines. The grip also switches to local editing when the barline’s span differs from the staff default, so its scope can vary between barlines in the same score.

I reproduced an undo problem with eight measures: the staff default is disconnected, with individual connections in measures 1–6. Dragging the disconnected grip at measure 7 connects all eight measures. Undo then disconnects all eight instead of restoring the original six connections.

This also happens after removing every custom span style. The relevant grip/default-update functions are unchanged from the PR’s base revision, which points to an existing span-editing issue. Incorrect undo needs fixing regardless of the intended UX.

Could you confirm the intended precedence? My proposed model would be:

  • Keep the grip as the staff-default connection editor, preserving explicit per-barline connection overrides.
  • Let Properties edit connection and style overrides on the selected barlines. A style-only override should not itself freeze the connection state.

Would you prefer that model, or should this PR preserve the current grip semantics and address default/override behavior separately?

One useful discovery from testing: clicking the first barline and Shift-clicking the last selects the intervening barlines, including mid-measure ones. A regular measure-range selection does not expose Barline properties, so clarifying the expected workflow would still help.

Update: working proposal for assessment

I have now implemented and pushed the requested per-selected-barline Span style and UI changes, together with a concrete proposal for the default/override behavior discussed above.

The end-of-measure grip edits the staff connection default while preserving explicit local connections and disconnections. Properties edits the selected barlines, and the existing Default span preset restores inheritance without resetting the appearance. Style-only changes remain independent of connection inheritance. Ctrl+grip and mid-measure grip editing remain local.

Undo/redo now restores the mixed connection pattern and override state. The implementation also preserves these settings when saving/reopening, copying barlines or rewriting measures after a time-signature change.

This is a working proposal for your assessment, not a presumption that the UX decision is settled. I am happy to adjust its behavior or separate the span-default changes if you would prefer a different scope.

Implementation: e3fe82d31a. 197 local tests pass; the PR description contains the validation details. A fresh full manual matrix for the proposed default/override behavior is still pending.

Remove redundant integer range validation and numeric XML fallback as
requested in review. Drop tests for the removed prototype compatibility.

Keep the current staff-wide behavior and UI unchanged in this commit;
selection behavior is being discussed separately.

Address review findings on musescore#35104 and the unit-test build failure when
GitHub tests the branch merged with newer main.

- Create the test time signature with an existing Segment, avoiding the
  DummyParent::segment API removed on main.
- Restore saved span values and inheritance when rewriting into an
  existing barline, preserving explicit disconnections.
- Distinguish repeat-end types forced by layout from explicitly chosen
special barlines, so removing a repeat restores the normal type while
preserving span style and connection overrides, including after reload.
- Use the next measure's staff bottom only for end-of-measure spans.
- Reset span-from and span-to together with the connection when promoting
a selected span interval to the staff default.

Add regression tests for these state and geometry cases and for preserving
explicit special barline types.

its other 995 comparisons were identical.

An extra rerun exposed an intermittent copypasteparts tremolo snapshot
difference; the final complete 201-test run passed without further changes.

Address the failures in the unit-test run for musescore#35104.

Keep barline initialization inherited when its value matches the staff
default, without clearing an existing explicit override. Property edits
and explicit MSCX 5 span tags still create local overrides. Omit redundant
mid-measure span tags while preserving local values from legacy styled
initialization. This restores the existing import snapshot output for
GuitarPro, MEI, MNX and MusicXML.

Make the reorder test toggle the actual post-reorder connection state
and check canUndo before undoing. Setting an already-disconnected barline
to false creates no command, so the previous second undo aborted Debug CI.
Use property editing when constructing an explicitly customized pattern
and verify that reinitialization preserves an existing explicit override.

Validation: application and five complete test targets built locally;
1,646 tests and ten draw-data comparisons passed. Three local MNX harness
failures remain (MSVC regex limits and compiler-dependent warning tags);
these cases passed in the investigated Linux run. Existing disabled tests
were left unchanged. Of the 168 previous CI import failures, 164 were
verified passing locally; four cases require the Linux/newer-main setup.

@aaronFortuno On the question of the span handle and Properties: a change to the staff default (a handle drag, Up/Down in edit mode, Set as staff default) should keep the spans set on individual barlines, as it does now. On a barline that has its own span, though, the handle and Up/Down should change only that barline, as they do in main when a barline differs from the staff default. Ctrl+drag and mid-measure barlines stay local, as before.

Test score: f2-f3.mscz.zip

With this in mind:

Up and Down in edit mode change the rest of the staff instead of the edited barline

  1. Open the attached score f2-f3
  2. Select the Violin's barline at the end of b.5, tick Span to next staff, then Show more > Set as staff default
  3. Select the Violin's b.3 barline and untick Span to next staff
  4. Double-click that barline, press Down
Screen.Recording.2026-11-05.at.13.19.36.mov

Notice: Every connection between the Violin and the Viola disappears, and b.3 is still not connected. The same happens the other way round: on a staff that isn't connected, tick Span to next staff on one barline, double-click it and press Up. Every other barline on the staff connects, and the edited one stays connected.

Expected: Only the edited barline should change: b.3 should connect, as in Nightly main.

Dragging the handle of a barline with its own span does nothing

Following steps 1–3 above, so b.3 is the only Violin barline that isn't connected:

  1. Click the b.3 barline and drag its lower handle down (without Ctrl)
Screen.Recording.2026-11-05.at.13.32.03.mov

Notice: The handle snaps back and nothing changes. The same happens the other way round: on a staff that isn't connected, tick Span to next staff on one barline and drag its lower handle back up. Ctrl+drag works as it should.

Expected: The drag should connect b.3 (only, as it differs from the default), as in Nightly main.

A barline set back to the staff default no longer follows it

  1. Open f2-f3
  2. Select the Violin's b.3 barline, tick Span to next staff, then untick it
  3. Click the Violin's b.5 barline and drag its lower handle down (without Ctrl)
Screen.Recording.2026-11-05.at.13.36.14.mov

Notice: Every Violin barline connects except b.3, though nothing showed that it was any different from the others.

Expected: A barline adjusted to be the same as the staff default should follow the staff default again.

After an end repeat is replaced by a single barline, its span style and span show but aren't saved

f4.mscz.zip

  1. Open the attached score f4
  2. Select the Violin's barline at the end of b.4 and set Span style to Dashed
  3. Select the Viola's b.4 barline and tick Span to next staff
  4. Select the Violin's b.4 barline and click End repeat in the Barlines palette
  5. Select the b.4 barline again and click Single barline in the palette
  6. Save, close and reopen the score
Screen.Recording.2026-11-05.at.13.47.12.mov

Notice: After step 5, b.4 still shows the dashed connection and the Viola's connection to the Cello, and the Properties panel still shows both. After reopening, both are gone. Undoing the end repeat, or replacing it with a double barline, keeps both.

Expected: What's shown before saving should be identical when reloading the score.

[UPDATE: There are preexisting issues here, which should probably be dealt with separately. See #35532.]

Span style can also be set while Span to next staff is unticked, where it has no effect. It should only be shown when Span to next staff is ticked.

Use the same scope for dragging the grip and using the arrow keys. A
barline with its own connection is edited locally. Inherited end
barlines edit the staff default while preserving local connections.

Restore inheritance when a local end-barline edit returns to the staff
default. Keep the existing flag when applying an unchanged value, so a
staff default that happens to match an override does not erase it.
Exercise both keyboard and grip directions, undo, and score round-trips.

Follow the checked state of Span to next staff, including mixed
selections. Keep the stored style when the dropdown is hidden and
adjust the navigation order when the control is absent.

Thanks, David. I’ve pushed two commits addressing your feedback, I think I've covered all the pending issues.

  • The span handle and Up/Down now edit a barline locally when it has its own span. On an inherited end-of-measure barline, they change the staff default and preserve existing overrides. Ctrl+drag and mid-measure edits still act locally.
  • Editing an end-of-measure barline back to the staff default restores inheritance.
  • Span style now appears only when Span to next staff is checked. Reconnecting a barline brings back its saved style.
Local validation included the Down-key case in your f2-f3 score. All 33 barline tests and 10 draw-data comparisons passed. The repeat/save behavior is tracked separately in Adding an end repeat resets a barline's _Span to next staff_, and its colour is lost on save #35532.
