Resolves: #34797

Overview

This PR implements a new global style option (Sid::oversizedNoteheads) to support oversized noteheads. More specifically, it allows users to opt out, as external fonts are currently loaded with oversized noteheads by default. This ensures better usability across a wider range of fonts. To maintain backward compatibility, the option is disabled by default for all fonts except Bravura, which has it enabled by default when loading font defaults.

Changes Made

  • Symbol Mapping: Added new SymId enums and string mappings specifically for oversized noteheads.
  • UI & Styling: Introduced the Sid::oversizedNoteheads style definition along with a corresponding checkbox in the EditStyle dialog.
  • Font Handling: Updated EngravingFont to enable dynamic symbol resolution and cloning, which is necessary to isolate font instances and prevent state sharing.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The change adds five oversized notehead symbols and exposes them through the API. Engraving fonts can clone themselves, track oversized-notehead state, and resolve standard noteheads to oversized variants when the variants are valid. A new score style controls this behavior. Score layout caches the selected font and applies the style. The EditStyle dialog includes a “Use oversized noteheads” checkbox.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to cb39a

Bravura scores can lose their intended oversized noteheads, while certain font changes or buffer-backed fonts can render with the wrong font or notehead variant. Resolve these font-state issues before merging.

[#34797] The style control, oversized symbol mappings, and per-score font cloning support selection of ordinary or oversized noteheads. That selection is connected to the reported anchor mismatch. The API mappings and UI changes support the same objective.

Explanation

[#34797] The PR separates ordinary and oversized symbol IDs and selects the variant through EngravingFont::sym(). It also loads glyphsWithAnchors and adds a style control. This change addresses the prior replacement of ordinary notehead symbols by oversized symbols. The available source output does not show how anchor metadata is stored or how stem placement reads it. The PR includes no automated regression test for the reported extreme-anchor case.

Resolution

Provide the anchor-loading and stem-placement code or an automated regression result that shows the selected variant uses its own glyphsWithAnchors coordinates.

Load glyph metadata without oversized notehead resolution.

clone() copies m_oversizedNoteheads and reloads metadata while that flag is enabled. loadGlyphsWithAnchors() then maps noteheadWhole to the valid noteheadWholeOversized symbol, although Bravura defines no anchors for the oversized glyph. The clone therefore assigns base-notehead anchors to the oversized symbol. Use direct m_symbols indexing while loading metadata, or disable oversized resolution during the load.

Preserve existing Sid ordinals.

Sid uses implicit numeric values and is exposed through Q_ENUM_NS(Sid). Inserting oversizedNoteheads shifts every later ordinal. Name-based plugin access and XML persistence remain safe, but consumers that use raw Sid or QMetaEnum values can resolve old ordinals to different styles. Append the member before STYLES with its matching styleValues entry, or assign explicit stable values while preserving array indexing.

Yes, that was phrased a bit too defensively. In general, I'd suggest only making the checkbox 'enableable' if the font actually supports oversized variants. That way, one could also get rid of that "Prefer ...".

I'll try to investigate this next week, but I'm not sure yet how to check a font for feature compatibility. As far as I know, Leland, Emmentaler, Finale Maestro & Broadway, and MuseJazz don't support oversized variants. Gootville and Petaluma do have values in their metadata, but currently (almost) nothing changes for them in my implementation – for example either because my code is buggy or because no alternative glyphs are present despite the metadata. If it's the latter, I'm out of ideas concerning font compatibility checks.

Hi Michael,

Thank you for working on this! As the developer of numerous third-party SMuFL music fonts, including the NorFonts collections, and having reviewed and maintained the MTF and LS Iris fonts, I strongly support this improvement.

I've recently encountered stem-alignment problems with noteheadBlackOversized and noteheadHalfOversized in MuseScore 4.6.7. Modifying their stemUpSE and stemDownNW anchors resolves the problem in MuseScore, but my tests showed that those same modifications cause misalignment in Dorico and Finale v27.

Allowing users to switch between regular and oversized noteheads would therefore be a very welcome improvement, particularly for third-party font compatibility.

One important consideration: MuseScore should preserve the correct SMuFL attachment anchors for whichever notehead variant is selected, without mixing the regular and oversized metadata.

I hope this PR can move forward once the remaining technical issues are resolved. It would certainly save us quite a few headaches. ;-)

Many thanks for your efforts!

Keep buffer-backed font clones valid.

With the Qt font provider, loading a buffer-backed font leaves the device at its end. clone() reuses that device, so its reload fails. The clone retains valid symbols but has no initialized m_font; drawing can use the wrong font.

Ensure the clone can reload the device, and do not return an invalid clone when loading fails.

Hi @Jojo-Schmitz,

I have rebased this PR onto the latest main. Along with the rebase, I implemented the dynamic UI behavior I suggested: the visibility of the "Use oversized noteheads" checkbox (title updated according to your suggestion) now depends on the capability of the selected font. Which means it is now hidden for most fonts (see video). The only problematic font is Petaluma, which seems to have the oversized glyphs in its metadata, but apart from displaced stems, nothing changes visually.

I also addressed the feedback from CodeRabbit and fixed the codestyle violations. The VTest is likely failing because it is currently comparing oversized noteheads from the reference build with normal noteheads from the current build. I will perform a manual verification likely next week.

Hi @NorFonts,

thank you for sharing your font expertise and supporting this feature! Unfortunately, I currently have very limited time resources and only a basic understanding of the SMuFL mechanics. I hope we can get the core developers on board to look into this and fix the incorrect interpretation of the stem anchors in the future. I guess the next step is finding a free font triggering this specific behavior.

Best,
Michael

It also affects score using Emmentaler and Gonville, here I don't know whether that is intended or acceptable. Not sure how to deal with Petaluma, maybe an issue needs to get raised on its GitHub

Thanks a lot for the reply. I spent today looking into the VTests:

  1. They failed for Bravura because I was so focused on new scores that I completely forgot to set the default value for Bravura’s oversized noteheads to true when a old score is opened that naturally doesn't have a defined value yet. A silly mistake, but thankfully a quick fix.

  2. For Petaluma, selecting oversized noteheads was previously enabled but didn't change anything in the visual appearance, except for the stems shifting slightly. Here is the background: At the moment, my patch checks whether a symbol with the SymID "noteheadBlackOversized" exists (m_symbols[static_cast<size_t>(SymId::noteheadBlackOversized)].isValid();). MuseScore, in turn, looks for noteheadBlackOversized at U+F4BE in the font. I took a look at Petaluma and indeed there is a glyph at this position—however, it is completely identical to the regular glyph at U+E0A4. Since the metadata.json contains different bBox values for the oversized variants, this causes the described behavior. So essentially, the layout engine is doing exactly what it's told to do. However, because this option might look buggy to the user in practice, I recommend simply adding an exception for Petaluma and disabling this functionality.

  3. The VTests also failed for Gootville, and indeed, the note stems here are horribly misaligned in my PR. I need to elaborate a bit on this...
How did MuseScore work before my PR?
First, the regular glyphs and their metadata were loaded. If oversized variants were found subsequently via loadGlyphAlternates (which maps noteheadBlackOversized onto the regular noteheadBlack), those glyphs and their metadata overwrote the regular SymIDs. Since Gootville does not have any oversized glyphs, but contains oversized metadata, this originally created a mismatch (normal glyph + oversized metrics)—yet in practice, it used to look perfect (more on that later).
    How does my patch work?
Now, regular and oversized glyphs and their metadata are loaded under their respective SymIDs. If an oversized variant is not available, the corresponding regular glyph is used as a fallback. The availability of oversized variants is verified (see point 2). If the user enables oversized noteheads, MuseScore no longer overwrites the regular SymIDs dynamically. Instead, it internally redirects requests from regular SymIds to their oversized counterparts via resolveSymId(). With Gootville, no oversized glyph is found, so the functionality is not provided, and the regular glyphs and metadata are loaded instead. So here too, everything works as expected. Nonetheless, it looks terrible...
After diving into the origin story of Gootville/Gonville and going down a few wrong paths, I accidentally stumbled upon the root cause: During the SMuFL adaptation, Bravura's metadata was apparently used as a template. Since MuseScore previously used the oversized variants by default and hard-overwrote them, the actual customized metrics of Gootville were written into the oversized JSON blocks, while the metadata for the regular variants was left untouched at Bravura's default values and still matches them today. So in my opinion, the metadata needs to be fixed here, not the code! I would suggest copying all oversized metrics into the regular metadata blocks and deleting the oversized blocks from Gootville's JSON entirely. This way, the metadata will accurately reflect the font: a single, regular variant.

I'm sorry for the long text—I just wanted to make sure point three was clearly and transparently documented to all reading here.

I will resolve these three straightforward issues over the next few days and inspect the Emmentaler thing. Then everything should run through without errors.

Making an exception for Petaluma would be a temporary solution, until Steinberg fixes it. Which means that the issue needs to get reported to them 😉
