Summary

v3.4.2 "Countersign": the RustyNES core in RetroArch loads on Apple Silicon Macs again.

Symptom (maintainer): RetroArch on a Mac froze and dropped back to the shell when it loaded RustyNES from the Online Updater, for at least the last couple of releases. The desktop app was fine.

Cause: libretro's rust-apple.yml template runs $STRIP -S on the core after linking. On arm64 the linker has already ad-hoc signed the dylib, and the image's strip (osxcross, on Linux) rewrites it without re-signing. macOS kills any process that loads arm64 code with a broken signature. The buildbot's core of 2026-10-20 had 101 of 538 page hashes mismatched; gambatte and snes9x from the same server (built natively on a Mac) had 0.

Fix: libretro-build-osx-arm64 sets STRIP_CORE_LIB: "0"; libretro_buildbot_audit pins it (mutation: deleting the line fails the test). Intel Macs, the desktop app, iOS and tvOS were not affected.

Verification

  • On the maintainer's Mac (M5 Max, macOS 27.0.1): the buildbot's own arm64 core with only its signature repaired (ad-hoc, 0 of 538 mismatched) loads in RetroArch; the unrepaired file killed it.
  • On libretro's own buildbot: pipeline 125851 built this branch; its unstripped arm64 core verifies (538 pages, 0 mismatched, linker-signed), and the maintainer loaded that exact build in RetroArch on the same Mac.
  • Security: RUSTSEC-2026-0382 / -0381 fixed by rustls-webpki 0.103.16 and webpki-roots 1.0.10; the 0.26.11 shim and basic-toml (RUSTSEC-2026-0374) recorded as documented exceptions, the first guarded by dependency_floor_audit.
  • Upstream report: rust-apple.yml / rust-osx.yml: post-link strip breaks the arm64 macOS code signature, so RetroArch is killed loading Rust cores libretro/libretro-super#2154.
  • Release audits: release_anchor_audit 18, release_state_prose_audit 9, release_notes_render_audit 4, libretro_info_audit 6, libretro_buildbot_audit 2; markdownlint and clippy clean.

Release

No emulation, app, format or RTL change (epoch 5, protocol 9). The MiSTer bitstreams are v3.4.1's, attached byte for byte under v3.4.2 names. RetroArch users get the fix from the nightly buildbot of main and must re-download the core.

Note

Medium Risk
Touches TLS trust roots for netplay and RetroAchievements plus libretro macOS packaging; emulation logic is unchanged, but TLS and how the arm64 core is built affect real user sessions.

Overview
v3.4.2 "Countersign" is a patch release: emulation, apps, and save/movie/netplay formats stay on v3.4.1 (epoch 5, protocol 9).

The headline fix is RetroArch on Apple Silicon. The libretro buildbot job libretro-build-osx-arm64 now sets STRIP_CORE_LIB: "0" so the post-link strip no longer breaks the linker’s ad-hoc arm64 code signature (which had been killing RetroArch at core load). libretro_buildbot_audit locks that variable in the job’s variables: block; x86_64 still strips as before.

Security housekeeping bumps rustls-webpki to 0.103.16 and webpki-roots 1.x to 1.0.10 for netplay and RetroAchievements TLS. dependency_floor_audit fails the build if webpki-roots 1.x drops below 1.0.10, backing documented RUSTSEC-2026-0381 and basic-toml (RUSTSEC-2026-0374) ignores in deny.toml / .cargo/audit.toml.

Everything else is the 3.4.2 version sweep (workspace, Android/iOS, hosted RA_USER_AGENT, libretro .info, changelog and release notes).

RetroArch on Apple Silicon was killed outright (frozen, then back to the
shell) whenever it loaded the RustyNES core from its Online Updater, for
at least the last couple of releases. The desktop app was unaffected.

Root cause: libretro's rust-apple.yml template links the core, then runs
`$STRIP -S rustynes_libretro.dylib` when STRIP_CORE_LIB is 1, which the
macOS templates set. On arm64 the linker has already ad-hoc signed the
dylib (CodeDirectory flags 0x20002, adhoc | linker-signed). The image's
strip is osxcross's cctools port, run on Linux; it rewrites the file and
does not re-sign it. macOS on Apple Silicon kills any process that maps
arm64 code whose signature does not match its pages, so RetroArch dies
at core load rather than reporting an error.

Measured on the buildbot's own core (apple/osx/arm64/latest, built
2026-10-20 05:14), with a script that recomputes each 4 KiB page's
SHA-256 and compares it with the CodeDirectory:
rustynes_libretro.dylib 538 pages, 101 mismatched; the signed range
(codeLimit 2201840) ends 32 bytes before the
                            signature (offset 2201872)
  gambatte_libretro.dylib 949 pages, 0 mismatched
  snes9x_libretro.dylib 707 pages, 0 mismatched
The two controls are C cores built natively on libretro's Mac runner
(osx-arm64.yml, tag mac-apple-silicon), with Apple's own toolchain. The
x86_64 core carries no signature at all and needs none, so Intel Macs
were not affected by this.

Fix: the osx-arm64 job sets STRIP_CORE_LIB: "0", overriding the
template's 1, so the linker's signature ships intact. The release profile
has no debug info, so `-S` was removing little. The x86_64 job keeps
stripping. iOS and tvOS are left alone: their dylibs are bundled into the
App Store app and re-signed by Xcode, and iOS cannot download cores.

libretro_buildbot_audit pins the setting inside the job's own variables
block (where it outranks the template). Mutation: deleting the line fails
the test with the reason printed; restored, 2 passed. A second test
guards the job parser so a renamed job cannot read as a reverted fix.

Not yet verified: that the buildbot's branch pipeline produces a dylib
whose signature checks clean. That is the next step, on this branch's
libretro mirror pipeline, before merge.

The other libretro Rust template, rust-osx.yml, has the same post-link
strip, so other arm64 Rust cores built from either template are likely
affected; that is for libretro's ci-templates, reported separately.

The CHANGELOG gains [3.4.2] - 2026-10-20 - "Keystone" (the codename the
maintainer chose), and scripts/release-automation/bump_release.py moved
every anchor from it: the workspace and cosim manifests and both
lockfiles (19 workspace crates, versions only; `cargo update -w`
refreshed the root lock, which the script left), the libretro .info
display_version, Android versionName/versionCode, iOS MARKETING_VERSION,
the hosted Worker's package version and RA User-Agent, and the
current-release prose, each demoting "Beacon" rather than overwriting it.

The script first refused: to-dos/ROADMAP.md's release-line chain ended
"v3.4.1 "Beacon", the current release". That chain now has a v3.4.2
clause. VERSION-PLAN gains a v3.4.2 row and a history row, and the plan
is to-dos/plans/v3.4.2-plan.md: the report, the measurements, the gate
(the branch's own buildbot pipeline must produce an arm64 dylib whose
signature verifies), and what is out of scope (no bitstreams, ladders or
format change; v3.4.1's bitstreams ride along byte for byte).

docs/agents/libretro.md records the finding and how to check a macOS
core's signature without a Mac.

Verified: release_anchor_audit 18, release_state_prose_audit 9,
release_notes_render_audit 4, libretro_info_audit 6,
libretro_buildbot_audit 2 passed; markdownlint clean.

.github/release-notes/v3.4.2.md, the override Auto Release publishes.

The verification rests on a test the maintainer ran on 2026-10-20 on a
MacBook Pro (M5 Max, macOS 27.0.1). The file under test was the
buildbot's own apple/osx/arm64 core of 2026-10-20 (101 of 538 page hashes
mismatched), re-signed ad-hoc on this machine with rcodesign 0.29.0
(release tarball checked against its published SHA-256). After the
re-sign it read 0 of 538 mismatched, the signed range reaching the
signature, all 50 retro_* exports and the same two system libraries.
The unrepaired file killed RetroArch on load; the repaired one loads.
The code is byte-identical outside the signature, so this isolates the
signature as the cause.

Still to be measured: the buildbot's own unstripped build from this
branch. libretro's GitLab mirror has not synced since about 04:00 UTC
(its newest branch is docs/v3.4.1-post-release; release/v3.4.2 is
absent), so the branch pipeline has not run. The notes make no claim
about it yet; it is added when measured.

The notes also say how the fix reaches users: RetroArch's Online
Updater serves libretro's nightly build of main, not this page, so the
core already downloaded must be re-downloaded. The MiSTer section
attaches v3.4.1's two bitstreams byte for byte under v3.4.2 names, as
v2.9.3-v2.9.7 did; no RTL changed.

Verified: release_notes_render_audit 4 and release_anchor_audit 18
passed; markdownlint clean.

The Apple Silicon build change preserves code signatures rather than weakening macOS enforcement. Its scope is narrow, but the inherited build steps and final distributed library have not been independently verified at the reviewed revision.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The signing-policy delta directly affects the macOS arm64 libretro library and RetroArch installations that obtain its replacement. The inspected job change does not extend builder authority or add signing credentials; its purpose is preserving executable integrity within the existing distribution path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The repository supplies configuration to an external Apple build template, and macOS subsequently enforces the resulting image's signature. Preserving an ad-hoc signature is an integrity measure, not evidence of authenticated publisher identity. External post-processing and publication controls remain outside the verified source coverage; the PR does not introduce that trust dependency.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new advisory-wide webpki-roots exception relies on a separate compensating lockfile test. That test rejects a missing 1.x package, versions below 1.0.10, and unexpected non-1.x versions; a second test requires the separate cosim lockfile to remain free of webpki-roots.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — As follow-on hardening, verify signature integrity on the exact arm64 library selected for publication and retain its digest and build revision. This would complement the configuration audit and manual loading evidence without treating the existing external verification gap as a newly introduced vulnerability.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

This PR cuts release v3.4.2 ("Countersign"), disabling post-link stripping on the macOS arm64 libretro buildbot job so the linker's ad-hoc code signature remains valid, updating rustls-webpki and webpki-roots for recent TLS root advisories, and adding audit tests for both.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/dependency_floor_audit.rs:688-716: webpki_roots_floor verifies that at least one 1.x version of webpki-roots is present and rejects non-1.x versions other than 0.26.11, but does not require 0.26.11 itself to be present. If tungstenite upgrades to webpki-roots 1.x directly and 0.26.11 drops out of Cargo.lock, this test will still pass with ["1.0.10"] instead of prompting removal of the global RUSTSEC-2026-0381 ignore in .cargo/audit.toml and deny.toml (whose expiration comment at deny.toml:907 names that exact condition). Assert versions.iter().any(|v| v == "0.26.11") alongside the 1.x presence check.
  • crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/libretro_buildbot_audit.rs:846-874: Consider extracting the variables: block check into a helper taking YAML text and adding a negative unit test (analogous to the_floor_refuses_what_it_exists_to_refuse in dependency_floor_audit.rs) verifying that STRIP_CORE_LIB: "0" placed only in before_script: or a comment is rejected.

Nitpicks

  • ARCHITECTURE.md:120-122, OVERVIEW.md:410-412, ROADMAP.md:457-459: Applies to: / Project Status: were bumped to v3.4.2 while the adjacent Last Updated: headers remain at 2026-10-06 / 2026-10-07.

Suggestions

  • Historical v2.4.7 codename overwritten by global search-and-replace: When renaming v3.4.2 from "Keystone" to "Countersign" to avoid colliding with v2.4.7, an unscoped replacement also rewrote v2.4.7's own codename from "Keystone" to "Countersign" in SECURITY.md, docs/STATUS.md, and to-dos/ROADMAP.md. Restore **v2.4.7 "Keystone"** in those three files so v2.4.7 keeps its historical codename and does not collide with v3.4.2 "Countersign".
  • Inline YAML comment handling in the_macos_arm64_core_is_not_stripped_after_signing: In libretro_buildbot_audit.rs, l.trim() == "STRIP_CORE_LIB: \"0\"" and l == " variables:" will fail if a trailing YAML comment is added to either line; stripping # comments first (as done in release_anchor_audit.rs) makes the check resilient to comments.

Nitpicks

  • PR title: The PR title still reads release: v3.4.2 "Keystone", whereas CHANGELOG.md and .github/release-notes/v3.4.2.md use "Countersign".
  • triple pre-release ordering: Collapsing all pre-release suffixes to 0 is sufficient when comparing against a stable floor (1, 0, 10, 1), but two pre-releases of the same major.minor.patch will compare equal if triple is ever reused for general version ordering.

Blocking issues

Suggestions

  • dependency_floor_audit.rs: triple strips - suffixes before comparing (v.split(['-', '+']).next()) and defaults parse errors to 0. Under SemVer, a pre-release such as 1.0.10-alpha.1 sorts below 1.0.10, yet triple("1.0.10-alpha.1") < (1, 0, 10) evaluates to false. Consider rejecting - pre-release suffixes (or ordering them below the release tuple) and panicking on unparseable numeric segments instead of .unwrap_or(0).
  • libretro_buildbot_audit.rs: In the_macos_arm64_core_is_not_stripped_after_signing, .take_while(|l| l.starts_with(" ")) stops at the first blank line inside variables:, whereas job allows blank lines within a block (l.is_empty() || l.starts_with(' ')). Allowing empty lines in the variables: slice (l.is_empty() || l.starts_with(" ")) would prevent a false test failure if comments and blank lines are added above STRIP_CORE_LIB in variables:.

Nitpicks

  • SECURITY.md, docs/STATUS.md, to-dos/ROADMAP.md: The release codename "Keystone" duplicates v2.4.7 "Keystone" in the same lineage lists.

This PR cuts patch release v3.4.2 ("Keystone"), disabling post-link binary stripping on the macOS arm64 libretro CI job so the linker's ad-hoc code signature remains valid, updating rustls-webpki and webpki-roots for RUSTSEC-2026-0381/0382, recording advisory exceptions for the webpki-roots 0.26.11 shim and basic-toml (RUSTSEC-2026-0374), and adding audit tests for the CI variable and lockfile version floor.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/libretro_buildbot_audit.rs:820-823: take_while(|l| l.starts_with(" ")) stops at the first blank line inside variables:, whereas job() on line 798 permits empty lines (l.is_empty() || l.starts_with(' ')). Accepting empty lines (l.is_empty() || l.starts_with(" ")) prevents a blank line or comment block inside variables: from causing a false failure.
  • crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/dependency_floor_audit.rs:665-673: triple() falls back to 0 via .unwrap_or(0) if a version segment fails to parse or is missing. Returning an error or panicking on malformed semver strings avoids silently coercing bad input into 0.

Nitpicks

  • crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/dependency_floor_audit.rs:647: crates/rustynes-cosim/Cargo.lock is a separate lockfile in this repository; although it does not currently pull in webpki-roots, noting or asserting that in the test would make the workspace scope explicit.
  • SECURITY.md:5: The codename "Keystone" was already used by v2.4.7 (prior reused codenames in this list used a " II" suffix, e.g., v2.4.9 "Plumbline II").

  • In libretro_buildbot_audit.rs, the_macos_arm64_core_is_not_stripped_after_signing scans the variables: block with .take_while(|l| l.starts_with(" ")). Unlike job, which allows empty lines (l.is_empty() || l.starts_with(' ')), a blank line or comment line inside variables: before STRIP_CORE_LIB: "0" will truncate the slice early and cause a false failure. Allow blank lines (l.is_empty() || l.starts_with(" ")) and strip trailing # ... comments before comparing.

Nitpicks

  • SECURITY.md and to-dos/ROADMAP.md: the release codename "Keystone" duplicates v2.4.7 "Keystone" in the same lineage lists.
  • CHANGELOG.md: the summary sentence omits the web build ("Nothing in the emulation core, the desktop or mobile apps or the MiSTer core changes"), whereas v3.4.2.md lists "the desktop, web and mobile apps".

…ignores

#623's Dependency Audit and Cargo Deny Check failed on three advisories
published after v3.4.1 (RustSec database of 2026-10-20, 1,348 entries).
Nothing in the branch caused them; main would fail the same way.

- RUSTSEC-2026-0382, rustls-webpki 0.103.15: certificate verification
may accept distrusted intermediates. -> 0.103.16.
- RUSTSEC-2026-0381, webpki-roots 1.0.9: bundled roots trust distrusted
emSign intermediates. -> 1.0.10 (120 roots, one emSign root fewer than
1.0.9's 121, counted in the crate sources).
- The same advisory also names webpki-roots 0.26.11, which stays:
tungstenite 0.30.0 (the newest release) requires 0.26, and 0.26.11 is
the newest 0.26. It is a semver-trick shim whose whole library is
  `pub use parent::TLS_SERVER_ROOTS` with `parent` = webpki-roots 1.x,
and the lock gives that 1.0.10, so no build trusts the old roots.
Ignored by ID in deny.toml and .cargo/audit.toml.
- RUSTSEC-2026-0374, basic-toml unmaintained (informational): reached
  only via uniffi 0.32.2 -> uniffi_bindgen -> askama 0.16.1 ->
  askama_derive, a proc-macro reading askama's config at compile time.
All three are the newest releases, so nothing in our manifests removes
it. Ignored with that reason and an expiry condition.

The trap that shaped the webpki-roots ignore: I first wrote it as
cargo-deny's `{ crate = "webpki-roots@0.26.11" }` to scope it to the
shim. cargo-deny 0.20.2 rejected it ("yanked crate not detected"): the
version-scoped form applies only to YANKED crates. An ID ignore also mutes
the advisory for 1.x, so dependency_floor_audit now fails if the lock
resolves webpki-roots 1.x below 1.0.10, or carries any 0.26 other than the
checked 0.26.11, or loses 1.x. It tests lockfile TEXT: a doctored
Cargo.lock cannot serve as a mutant, because cargo refuses to build when a
checksum changes. Mutation: lowering the floor to 1.0.9 fails
the_floor_refuses_what_it_exists_to_refuse; restored, 3 passed.

Verified locally: cargo deny check advisories -> "advisories ok";
cargo audit exit 0; clippy on the harness clean.

libretro's GitLab mirror synced and built release/v3.4.2 at e70347a
(pipeline 125851). Its arm64 artifact (job 2596309), fetched before the
10-minute expiry, verifies: 538 pages, 0 mismatched, codeLimit equal to
the signature offset (2201792), CodeDirectory flags 0x20002
(linker-signed ad-hoc), 50 retro_* exports. Against the pre-fix buildbot
core: 101 mismatched and a signed range 32 bytes short. So the fix
works on the builder that serves RetroArch, not only in a re-signed copy.

The release notes and the plan's Gate section now carry the figures.

… round

Codename. Antigravity noticed that "Keystone" was already v2.4.7's
codename (2026-08-23). Exact repeats have precedent (Lens, Curator and
Caliper each appear twice), but the maintainer chose a new name:
"Countersign". Every v3.4.2 occurrence is renamed, 17 across 12 files,
each on a line that names 3.4.2. The six that belong to v2.4.7 or to
older plans are untouched: its notes and CHANGELOG header, its
VERSION-PLAN and docs/mister.md rows, and two plan mentions. Earlier
commit subjects on this branch still say "Keystone"; they are history.

Review fixes (no blocking findings):

- libretro_buildbot_audit's module doc said the buildbot "only runs
after a merge". Wrong, and this release disproved it: libretro's
mirror builds every pushed branch, and pipeline 125851 is how the fix
was verified before merge (CodeRabbit). It now says that a green job
proves only that the core linked.
- The variables-block scan stopped at the first blank line, while the
job parser allows them; a blank line or comment block inside
`variables:` would have failed the test falsely (Antigravity).
- dependency_floor_audit's version compare dropped a pre-release suffix,
so "1.0.10-alpha.1" read as >= 1.0.10, and an unparseable segment read
as 0 (Antigravity). It now returns (major, minor, patch, release) with
release 0 for a pre-release, ignores build metadata, and panics on a
malformed segment. New cases: 1.0.10-rc.1 is refused, 1.0.10+build.5
passes, "1.x.10" panics. Mutation: making a pre-release count as a
release fails 2 of the 5 tests; restored, 5 passed.
- The cosim crate's separate lockfile was outside the floor's view
(Antigravity, nitpick). A test now asserts it has no webpki-roots, so
gaining one means extending the floor.

Also recorded: the maintainer loaded the buildbot-built core (pipeline
125851) in RetroArch on their Mac, and it works.

Verified: release_anchor_audit 18, release_state_prose_audit 9,
release_notes_render_audit 4, libretro_info_audit 6,
libretro_buildbot_audit 2, dependency_floor_audit 5 passed; clippy on the
harness and markdownlint clean.

Review round 1: replies

Antigravity (no blocking findings), all handled in d55cf45:

  • triple() mis-orders pre-releases and reads unparseable segments as 0. Valid. It now returns (major, minor, patch, release) with release 0 for a pre-release, ignores build metadata, and panics on a malformed segment. New cases: 1.0.10-rc.1 refused, 1.0.10+build.5 accepted, 1.x.10 panics. Mutation (pre-release counted as release): 2 of 5 tests fail.
  • The variables: scan stops at a blank line. Valid, it now allows blank lines like the job parser does.
  • The cosim lockfile is outside the floor (nitpick). A test now asserts it has no webpki-roots.
  • "Keystone" duplicates v2.4.7 (nitpick). Valid. The maintainer renamed the release "Countersign"; only v3.4.2's 17 occurrences changed, v2.4.7's are untouched.

Copilot ("needs a closer look: the branch-built arm64 artifact still needs the pre-merge signature verification"): done. libretro's pipeline 125851 built this branch, and its arm64 core verifies with 0 of 538 pages mismatched, signed range intact, linker-signed. The maintainer loaded that build in RetroArch on an M5 Max (macOS 27.0.1), and it works.

CodeRabbit: the one inline finding is fixed and resolved.

Codex: no findings.

Answers #623's second CodeRabbit round.

- The rename to "Countersign" (d55cf45) replaced "Keystone" on every
line that also named 3.4.2. The long release-lineage lines in
  SECURITY.md, docs/STATUS.md and to-dos/ROADMAP.md name BOTH releases,
so v2.4.7 was relabelled "Countersign" in those three. Restored. That
commit's message claimed the v2.4.7 occurrences were untouched; that
held only for lines naming v2.4.7 alone. Checked now with a pattern on
the release-and-name pair, not on the line: v2.4.7 reads "Keystone" in
all six places (its notes, CHANGELOG header... VERSION-PLAN,
docs/mister.md, STATUS, SECURITY, ROADMAP), and every v3.4.2 reference
  reads "Countersign".
- libretro_buildbot_audit trimmed each line of the variables block, so a
deeper-indented block scalar inside ANOTHER variable reading
`STRIP_CORE_LIB: "0"` would have satisfied it with the job variable
absent. It now requires a direct entry, exactly four spaces then the
key. Mutation: moving the setting into a `NOTE: |` block scalar fails
the test ("must be in the job's variables: block"); restored, 2 passed.

Final round (c6033d5)

No blocking findings. All 44 checks pass, every thread is resolved.

  • The v2.4.7 codename overwritten (Antigravity, 23:36 round; CodeRabbit inline): fixed in c6033d5. v2.4.7 reads "Keystone" in all six places, and v3.4.2 reads "Countersign".
  • webpki_roots_floor checks that at least one 1.x exists (00:06 round): it does, and it also fails on any 1.x below 1.0.10 and on any 0.26 other than 0.26.11, which is the property the ignore needs. Left as is.
  • Extract the variables: check into a helper taking YAML text (00:06 round): a reasonable refactor, not a defect. It is pinned by two mutations as it stands. Left for a later pass.

Merging on green.
