Summary

Post-release corrections for v3.4.1, found by checking the shipped Linux download:

  • Desktop binaries do not carry the hosted base. Native desktop netplay never reads it (only the browser lobby and the mobile bridge do), so the option_env! literal is optimized out: 0 occurrences in the v3.4.1 Linux binary. The notes, CHANGELOG and every release anchor said the desktop builds pointed at the hosted lobby; corrected in place, dated.
  • PGO was not promoted in v3.4.1 (-5.05% vs the 3% bar), so the notes' "ships the profile-guided Linux binary" was wrong; corrected.
  • The PGO promotion gate could never pass: it required the hosted base in a native binary. It now checks for the full build's RetroAchievements User-Agent instead (present in the shipped v3.4.1 binary).
  • CI trap recorded: a release PR from feat/ runs the Linux-only matrix (why the CRLF failure reached main).
  • Tickets for the review suggestions deferred from release: v3.4.1 "Beacon" #618 / sibling chore(deps)(deps): bump rfd from 0.14.1 to 0.17.2 #67.

The live v3.4.1 release body is updated to match the corrected notes file.

Verification

  • release_anchor_audit 18, release_state_prose_audit 4, release_notes_render_audit 9 passed; markdownlint clean.

Note

Low Risk
Documentation and release-workflow comment/test updates only; PGO gate logic change affects future Linux release asset selection, not runtime emulation.

Overview
Corrects v3.4.1 release documentation and CI behavior after verifying the shipped Linux binary: native desktop netplay does not use the hosted lobby, so the hosted URL is not embedded in desktop builds, and the v3.4.1 PGO run did not promote (5.05% slower than plain).

PGO promotion gate in pgo.yml no longer requires the hosted base string in the binary (that check could never pass on native builds). Promotion now requires the full build by grepping for the RetroAchievements User-Agent fragment ) rcheevos/ in the kept pgo-out/rustynes artifact. Comments in release.yml and pgo.yml are aligned with browser/mobile-only hosted usage. release_anchor_audit is updated to assert the new grep.

Docs and release notes (CHANGELOG, release notes, AGENTS.md, README, etc.) are edited in place with dated corrections: hosted lobby applies to browser and mobile builds only; desktop stays direct-by-address; PGO/Linux wording reflects non-promotion and the fixed gate.

CI guidance in docs/agents/ci-and-release.md documents that release PRs from feat/* skip macOS/Windows (v3.4.1 CRLF issue on main). MiSTer TASKS.md adds a deferred ticket for automated RTL mutation runs.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that the hosted netplay lobby is available through browser and mobile builds.
    • Clarified that native desktop netplay connects directly rather than using the hosted lobby.
    • Updated release history, roadmap, support guidance, and version planning to reflect the corrected platform scope.
    • Documented hosted URL behavior and the disabled TURN relay.
    • Corrected historical and current PGO release notes, including the v3.4.1 performance result.
    • Added guidance on release workflow behavior and cross-platform testing.

Two claims in the v3.4.1 release were wrong, found by checking the
shipped Linux download after Auto Release published it.

1. "The desktop binaries ... are compiled with [the hosted] address, so
a room code works with no setup." The release builds do set
RUSTYNES_HOSTED_BASE, but native desktop netplay never reads it: the
hosted base is consumed only by the browser lobby (wasm_lobby.rs, wasm
only) and the mobile bridge. rustynes_netplay::hosted::BUILD_HOSTED_BASE
is an option_env! literal, and in the native frontend only `.is_none()`
is evaluated, so the optimizer folds it and drops the string. Measured:
the v3.4.1 x86_64-linux binary contains 0 occurrences of the URL (and 0
of "workers.dev"). Desktop netplay connects directly by address, as it
always has. Corrected in the release notes, CHANGELOG and every
release anchor ("the browser and mobile builds pointing at it"), each
correction marked in place with its date.

2. "Ships the profile-guided Linux binary that was actually optimized."
The v3.4.1 PGO gate did not promote (speedup -5.05% against the 3%
bar; run 39349205257), so the Linux download is the plain build.

The PGO gate itself was broken by the same misunderstanding. v3.4.1
(f6cb343) refused promotion unless the kept binary contained the hosted
base, meant as proof that the kept file is the `full` build rather than
Stage 4's test build at the same path. Since a native binary never
contains the base, that check could never pass: PGO promotion was
blocked permanently, hidden this time only because the speedup missed
anyway ("hosted base present=0" in the run). The marker is now the
RetroAchievements User-Agent ("RustyNES/<v> (<os>) rcheevos/<v>"),
compiled in only with the `full` features' retroachievements; the
shipped v3.4.1 binary contains it, and the v2.9.6 PGO binary (a test
build) is recorded as lacking it. release_anchor_audit's needle follows.
The unused HOSTED_BASE env on the gate step is removed; the optimized
build still exports RUSTYNES_HOSTED_BASE, harmless and future-proof.

Also:
- docs/agents/ci-and-release.md: a release PR from a feat/ branch runs
CI's LIGHT matrix (Linux only), which is how a CRLF failure reached
main and held the tag until #621; open release PRs from release/*.
- Tickets for the review suggestions deferred from #618 and #67:
  T-MOBILE-RELAY-VALIDATE, T-HOSTED-TURN-SANITIZE, T-WEB-RA-PROXY-LAZY
  (ROADMAP), T-MISTER-RTL-MUTANT-RUNS (to-dos/mister/TASKS.md).

The live v3.4.1 GitHub release body is updated to match this file.
Verified: release_anchor_audit 18, release_state_prose_audit 4,
release_notes_render_audit 9 passed; markdownlint clean.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8496a

The gate will not promote an invalid build, but its CI result can give an incomplete explanation of why promotion succeeded. Update the output before or shortly after merge.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 8496a

The corrected gate can enable future optimized Linux releases, but retains the performance and determinism checks, release-commit verification, and existing publication permissions. No material security regression was identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed gate affects selection of the repository's Linux x86_64 release asset. It can make optimized publication possible where the previous configured hosted-base check rejected it, but does not introduce a new publication destination or authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The binary substring check establishes a feature-presence sentinel, not authenticity against a malicious build producer. Publication continues to depend on the existing trusted workflow, run-local artifact transfer, and tag/build commit comparison; the new marker is not the sole authorization control.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — A missing marker sets full_ok to zero, and an unsuccessful oracle does not emit the required true result. Both prevent promotion and optimized artifact upload. Final replacement still uses the pre-existing external clobber operation; repository source does not establish atomic recovery if that upload is interrupted.

Explanation

PASS — The reviewed range changes release documentation, CI workflow gating, and an audit test. No emulator, frontend, netplay runtime, or other user-visible behavior code changes are present. The release workflow change is comment-only, and the PGO change is CI/tooling logic. Explanation

PASS: The reviewed range changes only release documentation, workflow YAML, and an audit test. The authoritative diff contains no added unsafe { ... } block and no added unsafe fn, so the SAFETY-comment requirement is not triggered.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

Updates the v3.4.1 release notes and documentation to clarify that native desktop netplay does not use the hosted lobby, replaces the PGO promotion gate's unreachable HOSTED_BASE string check with a check for the RetroAchievements User-Agent () rcheevos/), and records follow-up tasks from the v3.4.1 release and review.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • to-dos/plans/v3.4.1-plan.md:21-22 and to-dos/plans/v3.4.1-plan.md:55: While VERSION-PLAN.md:79 and the release notes were updated to correct the desktop and PGO hosted_base claims, the linked plan file (to-dos/plans/v3.4.1-plan.md) still states under Decisions that the scope of the hosted base includes "the desktop release binaries" (lines 21-22) and in row 13 that "The promoted PGO Linux binary keeps the hosted base" (line 55). Adding a brief post-release correction note there would keep the plan record consistent with CHANGELOG.md and VERSION-PLAN.md.
  • .github/workflows/release.yml:116-124 and .github/workflows/pgo.yml:40-50: Since release.yml only builds native desktop binaries and native desktop code dead-strips BUILD_HOSTED_BASE (NetplayConfig::hosted_base has no non-test callers on native targets), setting RUSTYNES_HOSTED_BASE in release.yml, passing hosted_base into pgo.yml, and enforcing both in crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/release_anchor_audit.rs:1533-1550 is dead configuration unless desktop netplay gains hosted-service support later. Consider removing RUSTYNES_HOSTED_BASE from release.yml and hosted_base from pgo.yml (or gating the audit on web, android, and ios only) to avoid maintaining unused workflow plumbing.

Nitpicks

  • .github/workflows/release.yml:122: The comment # A user's hosted_base_url config still overrides it. immediately follows the explanation that native desktop netplay does not use the hosted base; on desktop (crates/rustynes-frontend/src/config.rs:355), hosted_base_url is ignored as well.
  • crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/release_anchor_audit.rs:1505-1506: The doc comment on every_shipped_build_compiles_the_same_hosted_base still opens with every shipped build compiles the same hosted base, which slightly contradicts lines 1513-1515 (a desktop binary does not contain it).

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

This PR corrects the v3.4.1 release documentation and anchor audit to reflect that native desktop builds do not use RUSTYNES_HOSTED_BASE, updates the PGO promotion gate in pgo.yml to check for the RetroAchievements User-Agent (") rcheevos/") instead of the dead-stripped hosted base URL, and records follow-up tasks from the v3.4.1 review and release run.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • to-dos/plans/v3.4.1-plan.md and line 55: Unlike the other v3.4.1 release documents updated in this PR, the v3.4.1 plan still lists "the desktop release binaries" under the scope of the hosted base and states in row 13 that "The promoted PGO Linux binary keeps the hosted base". Consider adding the same 2026-10-20 correction note there so the plan file does not contradict CHANGELOG.md and VERSION-PLAN.md.
  • .github/workflows/pgo.yml: Checking only grep -aqF ") rcheevos/" pgo-out/rustynes verifies that retroachievements was compiled in, not the rest of the full feature aggregate (scripting, script-ipc, hd-pack, av-record, debug-hooks). While sufficient to distinguish Stage 2's --features full build from Stage 4's --features test-roms rebuild, either checking a marker per feature or clarifying in the comment/summary message that retroachievements serves as a proxy for --features full would avoid overstating what the grep proves.

Nitpicks

  • release_anchor_audit.rs (diff line 266): The edited doc-comment line on every_shipped_build_compiles_the_same_hosted_base runs to 126 columns where the surrounding comment block wraps at ~80 columns.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

This PR corrects the v3.4.1 release notes and status docs to clarify that only browser and mobile builds use the hosted netplay lobby (and that the v3.4.1 PGO build did not promote), switches the PGO promotion gate from checking for the dead-stripped RUSTYNES_HOSTED_BASE literal to checking for the full build's rcheevos User-Agent string, and records the review follow-ups and CI branch-matrix lesson.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • .github/workflows/pgo.yml:65-74,162-175, .github/workflows/release.yml:54-60,290-294, and crates/rustynes-test-harness/tests/release_anchor_audit.rs:1505-1515,1570: Now that .github/workflows/pgo.yml:230-237 and release_anchor_audit.rs:211-213 document that native desktop netplay never reads BUILD_HOSTED_BASE and the optimizer strips the literal from desktop binaries, the earlier comments in the same files (e.g., pgo.yml:65-69, pgo.yml:174-175, release.yml:54-58, and the doc comment on every_shipped_build_compiles_the_same_hosted_base) still state the opposite ("without this the promoted PGO archive replaced release.yml's Linux binary with one built WITHOUT the base"). Either remove the no-op RUSTYNES_HOSTED_BASE / hosted_base plumbing from release.yml and pgo.yml (limiting the audit loop to ["web", "android", "ios"]), or update those comments so they do not contradict the gate comment right below them.
  • .github/release-notes/v3.4.1.md:9-23: Because the v3.4.1 tag and GitHub Release already exist, updating .github/release-notes/v3.4.1.md in git will not automatically update the published release body on GitHub; run gh release edit v3.4.1 --notes-file .github/release-notes/v3.4.1.md after merging so the live release page matches the repo.

Nitpicks

  • to-dos/plans/v3.4.1-plan.md:21-23,42,55: Rows 4 and 13 and the Decisions bullet still describe the desktop and PGO binaries as carrying the hosted base without the 2026-10-20 correction note added to CHANGELOG.md and .github/release-notes/v3.4.1.md.

Answers #622's reviews (no blocking findings).

- Antigravity: pgo.yml, release.yml and the anchor audit's doc comment
still said the PGO archive needed the hosted base, contradicting the
gate comment beside them. Reworded: the plumbing stays so the
optimized build is configured exactly like the plain one, the base
matters to the browser and mobile builds, and native desktop netplay
does not read it. Kept rather than removed: dropping it would make
release.yml's builds differ from the other shipped workflows for no
gain, and the audit that keeps the literals in step still holds.
- CodeRabbit (CHANGELOG, notes line 7): lead with the behaviour (desktop
netplay connects directly) rather than the binary's contents; the
measurement (no copy of the address in the v3.4.1 Linux download) is
kept as evidence, not as the claim.
- CodeRabbit (ci-and-release.md): Windows runs only in the full matrix
(release/* PRs, pushes to main), so the guidance says that.
- CodeRabbit (TASKS.md): T-MISTER-RTL-MUTANT-RUNS fails closed on patch,
build and gate-execution errors too, with BUILD-FAILED reported apart.

Verified: release_anchor_audit 18 and release_notes_render_audit passed;
markdownlint and actionlint clean.

Antigravity round on ca02405

  • Comments contradicting the new gate (pgo.yml, release.yml, the audit's doc comment): fixed in the latest commit. The plumbing stays, so the optimized build is configured like the plain one; the comments now say the base matters to browser and mobile builds and that native desktop netplay does not read it.
  • Update the live release body after merging: already done when this PR opened, and repeated with this round's wording.

Update the `promotable` output description to document all three gate
requirements: the retained full PGO build, the speedup threshold, the
byte-identical determinism oracle, and the full-feature marker. Replace the
outdated wording that describes only two conditions.

Keep the binary-content claim artifact-specific.

BUILD_HOSTED_BASE is a compile-time value. Native desktop netplay does not consume it. That behavior does not prove that every native binary omits the URL literal. Refer to the measured v3.4.1 Linux download, as Lines 38-40 already do.

Proposed wording
- required the hosted base, which a native binary never contains, so it could not pass
+ required the hosted base, which the measured v3.4.1 Linux download did not contain, so it could not pass

CodeRabbit on #622: an aggregate exit status could hide which mutant
survived. The gate now prints exactly one result per row, naming the
mutant (CAUGHT, NOT CAUGHT or BUILD-FAILED).
