The recipe reader counts the run's ceiling on files before it builds anything - #219
A recipe whose targets together ask for more than a million files is refused while it is read, at the target that crosses the ceiling and in the same words as before, now with the number of files the whole run asks for. Each target was held to a million on its own, and the run as a whole was counted only by the engine, after every target's list of sizes had been built. tfg validate of fifty such targets took 2.5 GB before it refused.
The ceiling is reported beside the recipe's other problems. A recipe with an unknown property and too many files used to hear only about the property, and about the files after fixing it.
In a recipe built on a preset, validate --json places the ceiling at the file's own target. It was counted through the preset's targets first, so a recipe with one target of its own on size-boundaries was refused at targets[8].count, a box neither the file nor the window has.
Reading a recipe takes a fifth of the memory: a target's list of sizes is reserved at its length rather than grown. The recipe screen reads the recipe on every key.
Exit code, one case: a recipe with a size under its format's minimum and too many files ends with code 3 rather than 4. The reader finds the ceiling now, and the size is the engine's, which is never reached. This is the rule already in place for every problem the reader finds.

validate --json on four recipes: the plain one is unchanged (exit 3, targets[2].count, the same sentence). The one with a second problem now reports both. The one built on a preset goes from targets[8].count to targets[1].count. The one with a size under the minimum goes from 4 to 3.
How
rawRecipe.readTargets (taken out of validate) keeps the files of the targets read so far and hands each target the room left. It refuses once, at the target that crosses the ceiling, and the refusal names the files of every target rather than the running total at that target, which said two million for ten targets of a million. The engine counts every target the same way when it refuses. The count is held one past the ceiling once crossed, and no target adds more than the ceiling, so it cannot wrap.
rawTarget.validate reads a target past the room for everything else and does not build its list. It returns the files the target asks for: the count, also when its size was refused, three for a boundary set, and nothing for a count refused on its own (readCount). For any recipe the reader passes, that is the length of the list, which is what the engine counts.
core.Uniform reserves the list, and engine.Uniform and the reader both use it.
The sentence is core.TooManyFilesInRun, used by the reader and the engine. Its Polish copy moved with it, with the same text and hash.
The engine keeps its count. Plan takes targets from any caller, and planCapacity reserves nothing past the ceiling because of that refusal.
Guards
runceiling_test.go:
a target past the room builds no list (what the reader allocates, against a control that sees the list of a legal million);
lists are reserved at their length for size, size-range and contains;
the edge (a million passes, one more does not, a boundary set at the edge, a refused count beside a million is refused once);
the ceiling beside another problem through validate --json;
its position with and without a preset;
the engine asked directly.
TestTheCeilingCountsTheWholeRunNotOneTarget asks recipe.Parse. Through validate, both the reader and the engine answered it, so either could lose its count and it stayed green. It also took 19 s, so it leaves .github/race-weights.
TestAnImpossibleFileCountInARecipeIsRefused also asks that the count is refused as the target's own. The run's ceiling would turn the same recipe away, but only the target's refusal keeps each part of the sum within a million.
The window guard is renamed TestARefusalAboutTheWholeRunMarksTheBatchThatCausedIt, since it no longer reaches the engine.
The ceiling cases leave the two guards about refusals from below the reader.
Mutation entries: nine new ones. Three of the engine's are repointed to the guard that asks it directly. One reader entry is updated for its new indentation.
…anything
- A recipe whose targets together ask for more than a million files is
refused while it is read, at the target that crosses the ceiling, in the
words the engine used. The engine was the first to count the run, after
every target's list of sizes had been built: tfg validate of fifty
targets of a million took 2.5 GB to refuse it, and now takes 9 MiB.
- A target the run has no room left for is still read for its other
problems, but its list of sizes is not built. The ceiling is reported
beside the recipe's other problems, and in a recipe built on a preset it
names the file's own target rather than one counted past the preset's.
- A target's list of sizes is reserved at its length rather than grown, so
reading a million files allocates 8 B a file instead of 40. The recipe
screen paid that on every key for every batch.
- A recipe with a size under its format's minimum and a run over the
ceiling now ends with code 3, the way every problem the reader finds does.
- The sentence lives in core, so the reader and the engine say it once. The
engine keeps its own count for targets handed to it directly, and a guard
asks it there.

Walkthrough
Recipe parsing now counts files across all targets and rejects totals above one million before building target size lists. Validation reports the target that crosses the ceiling. The engine retains its ceiling check for directly supplied targets.
Recipe validation tracks cumulative counts, passes remaining capacity to each target, and reports the first target that exceeds the ceiling. Size lists are allocated at their final length and are not built for over-capacity targets. Tests cover the exact one-million boundary, target types, allocation, and count errors.
The engine uses core.TooManyFilesInRun for its run-limit error detail. English and Polish locales add run file and target messages. Tests cover direct engine planning and engine refusal attribution.
Recipe and CLI refusal attribution internal/guard/runceiling_test.go, internal/guard/recipescreen_test.go, internal/guard/refusaladdress_test.go, .github/race-weights, CHANGELOG.md
Validation tests cover combined recipe errors and JSON attribution to the target that crosses the ceiling, including recipes built on presets. Related refusal tests and the race-weight entry are updated for the check moving into recipe reading.
The ceiling is enforced, but its refusal can understate the recipe’s total file count. This is a bounded diagnostic issue.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title clearly describes the main change: the recipe reader counts the run-wide file ceiling before building target data. It is specific, plain-language, and suitable for release notes or git history.
Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
The diff shows direct coverage for the changed runtime behavior: runceiling_test.go tests reader-wide counting, exact-million boundaries, refusal before list construction, reserved lists, co-reported problems, preset target attribution, and direct engine calls. The aggregate test now calls recipe.Parse to isolate reader behavior, and the PR description explicitly explains why. The only removed test declaration is a rename. Removed ceiling cases from refusaladdress_test.go are covered by the new run-ceiling tests and the description states that the check moved to runceiling_test.go. No test skip or assertion weakening lacks justification.
Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
The pull request adds no CLAUDE.md, CLAUDE.local.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/, or .env files. Added content contains no credentials, tokens, API keys, private URLs, local absolute paths, IP addresses, or personal email addresses. No listed debug calls or breakpoint/debugger calls were added; the fmt formatting calls are test-fixture generation.
Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling
Explanation
PASS: The PR does not add or change GUI code in XAML, Slint, Fyne, Tkinter, or WPF code-behind. The only GUI-path changes are text locale JSON resources, with no colors, fonts, spacing, sizes, radii, or copied controls.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
No clear performance problem was introduced. The changed recipe path remains linear over targets and file counts. sizesOf reserves each size list before filling it, replacing repeated append growth, and targets past the run ceiling skip list allocation. The GUI still parses on its existing path, but this change reduces its allocation cost rather than adding per-item I/O, nested collection work, or polling.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
The PR changes recipe validation, file-count accounting, error text, and size-list allocation. The changed runtime code does not load or save files, use working-directory paths, make network calls, request admin rights, start background work, or add destructive actions. The GUI still calls the existing synchronous recipe.Parse path; the PR does not introduce a new long-running operation or double execution. No culture-dependent number/date parsing was added.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
No unsafe file parsing was introduced. The PR changes validated recipe data after the existing YAML decode path, which already enforces MaxBytes, UTF-8, nesting depth, one document, strict keys, and panic recovery. readCount rejects invalid or over-limit counts before sizesOf allocates; valid allocation is capped at core.MaxFilesPerRun. The changed locale files are valid static JSON, and test-only encoding/json use parses test output.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
The PR does not add or change system-state code. The authoritative diff changes recipe validation, file-count limits, localization, documentation, and tests. It contains no network filters, proxy, firewall, system-time, process-hooking, service, registry, or driver operations. The reversibility requirements are therefore not applicable.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
PASS: The PR changes only refusal text and changelog wording; it adds no controls or buttons. The new run-ceiling message states the requested file and target totals, while the existing reason states the one-million-file limit and the remedy tells the user to request fewer files or split the work. English and Polish use the existing file/target terminology consistently, and no raw exception or vague action label was introduced.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
No resource leak is introduced. The changed code allocates only per-parse target data: sizesOf creates a fixed-length slice, and readTargets stops building size lists after the run reaches core.MaxFilesPerRun while capping planned at MaxFilesPerRun+1 (internal/recipe/recipe.go:434-473, internal/recipe/target.go:78-134,403-419). recipe.Parse returns the validated recipe or an error, so rejected parse data is not retained (internal/recipe/recipe.go:188-199). The GUI converts the parsed targets into the run targets and does not add a persistent cache or handler (internal/gui/window/preset.go:297-312). No changed timer, subscription, handle, goroutine, queue, or unbounded persistent collection requires release.
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
The PR scope and CHANGELOG coverage match the described run-ceiling and allocation changes. However, it adds internal/recipe/target.go:sizesOf, which duplicates the existing internal/engine/engine.go:Uniform helper. Both implement the same nil check, fixed-length allocation, and fill loop. The new helper even documents that engine.Uniform is the same list.
Resolution
Move the shared fixed-length []int64 allocator to a dependency-neutral package, such as internal/core. Make engine.Uniform and the recipe code delegate to that implementation. Keep engine.Uniform as a wrapper if existing internal callers require it.

## What a change has to satisfy
- **Every change in behaviour comes with a test that fails without it.** A green
suite is not evidence on its own. The question to answer in the pull request
is "which test would go red if this change were undone". Each test in
`internal/guard` is also broken on purpose by an entry in
`internal/guard/mutation/entries.py`, and the `mutation` check on a pull
request runs the entries the change reaches. A new test needs an entry there,
or a line in `internal/guard/mutationcoverage_test.go` saying why it has none.

- A run past the ceiling on files is told every file its targets ask for.
The reader and the engine both refuse where the run crosses the ceiling
and said the running total there, so ten targets of a million were told
they asked for two million. The reader now adds its one refusal once
every target is counted, still at the target that crossed, and the
engine counts every target's files when it refuses. The number is an
int64, since a recipe of a megabyte can hold more targets of a million
than an int of 32 bits counts.
- The list of files of one size is a single function in core, which
engine.Uniform and the recipe reader both use, rather than a copy in each.
