Thanks @Frisches-T for reporting the issue.

This is a bit odd, because nothing in the recent PRs actually touched the build logic or dependency resolution in a way that would explain a version mismatch. The only relevant change I saw was related to wheel repair on Windows, so it shouldn’t affect Linux builds or runtime behavior.
Could you try checking what is actually being linked when the extension loads? with ldd path/to/_pywhispercpp*.so

If that looks correct, then I would suspect is a change in the upstream whisper.cpp submodule. It might be worth trying to temporarily downgrade/pin the submodule to the version used in v1.4, rebuild the wheel from scratch, and see if the behavior changes.

At that point we can narrow it down to either a linking/runtime issue or an upstream regression.

I was able to reproduce the issue on my end. It looks like one of the recent PRs accidentally disabled the wheel repair step on Linux, which explains why the required libwhisper / libggml libraries were no longer being bundled into the final installation.

What's strange is that CI continued to pass without any obvious issues, so this slipped through unnoticed.

I've pushed a change to restore the previous behavior for Linux.

One thing to keep in mind: even if the import succeeds, CUDA builds may still run into a segmentation fault afterwards. The reason is that the wheel repair process also bundles libcuda, and unless the bundled version happens to match your system exactly, that can cause crashes at runtime.

So for CUDA builds, the recommended workaround remains the same as in previous issues: clone the repository locally and install with:

NO_REPAIR=1 GGML_CUDA=1 pip install .

That avoids bundling the CUDA driver libraries and lets the build use the system-installed CUDA stack instead.
