Direct H2D copies from pageable or mmap-backed input could block batch submission, preventing transfer/compute overlap despite an auxiliary stream.

Stage pageable batches through bounded pinned host buffers in the existing single- and multi-GPU KMeans loader. The full dataset remains mapped, and already-pinned input retains its direct-copy path.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • K-means fitting supports pageable and unregistered memory-mapped input through bounded, batch-sized pinned staging buffers. Already-pinned input is transferred directly.
    • Transfers and compute can overlap when a stream pool is configured and the host reader supplies batches quickly enough.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified default full-dataset buffering, smaller-batch configuration, serialized behavior without a stream pool, and double-buffering with one.
    • Updated memory estimates and guidance for weighted and multi-partition input, including stream and memory pool configuration.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for pinned, pageable, memory-mapped, mixed, and multi-pass batch-loading scenarios.

KMeans host-input handling now stages pageable batches in pinned buffers and transfers pinned input directly. The changes also clarify full-dataset buffering, smaller batches, stream behavior, and transfer overlap in API documentation.

The documentation states that a zero batch setting uses one full-dataset GPU input buffer for a single host matrix. A positive value below the sample count selects smaller batches. It describes serialized transfers by default and overlap when an auxiliary stream pool is configured.

The loader detects pageable partitions and uses per-slot pinned buffers to stage batches before H2D transfer. Pinned input transfers directly. The documentation describes bounded staging and states that overlap depends on host batch delivery.
Batch loader validation
cpp/tests/cluster/kmeans_batch_loader.cu, cpp/tests/CMakeLists.txt, cpp/tests/cluster/kmeans_mg.cu
CUDA tests cover mapped input, pinned and mixed partitions, prefetch, and cleanup. The cluster test target includes the new test source. The multi-GPU test fixture sets a one-stream pool.

Qualify the claim that the input is never copied in full.

For one pageable host matrix, the default full-dataset batch allocates a full-size pinned buffer. queue_h2d then copies every input row into that buffer. State that the original input is not registered, but a full-size batch can create a full-size pinned copy.

🟡 Minor · Correct the pageable-input staging description. · cpp-api-cluster-kmeans.md:128

fern/pages/cpp_api/cpp-api-cluster-kmeans.md:128
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Correct the pageable-input staging description.

With the default device_buffer_samples = 0, the single-matrix loader creates one batch covering the complete input and copies that batch into pinned memory. The statement that the complete input is never copied into pinned memory is therefore incorrect. This is a documentation issue; the loader implementation does not need to change.

Suggested fix
-The complete input is never registered or copied into pinned memory. Already pinned input is transferred directly.
+The input is never registered. Pageable input is copied into pinned memory one batch at a time; with the default `device_buffer_samples = 0`, one batch covers the complete input. Already pinned input is transferred directly.

Update the out-of-core staging description near the single-matrix loader
documentation to clarify that pageable input is copied into pinned memory one
batch at a time, and that the default device_buffer_samples = 0 makes one batch
cover the complete input. Keep the distinction that input is not registered and
already-pinned input is transferred directly; do not change the loader
implementation.

One minor concern: for the single batch case (device_buffer_samples = 0), we are doing the additional copy to a pinned buffer. Do you think it would be beneficial to directly transfer to device in that case (so if number of batches == 1, skip the kmeans batch loader entirely)?

For a single batch, the transfer happens only once, so it mostly comes down to the cost of explicitly allocating and filling a pinned buffer versus the time cudaMemcpyAsync may block while staging internally. I'm not sure the change is worth it. I'd also keep the batch loader responsible for managing the data, since bypassing it for the single-batch case would add complexity.

cpp/src/cluster/detail/kmeans_batch_loader.cuh: 1

196-197: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Skip pageable detection for single-batch inputs.

is_pageable performs an unnecessary cudaPointerGetAttributes query when the loader has one batch and does not allocate or use host staging. This is a small one-time cost. The cudaGetLastError() call handles the cudaErrorInvalidValue returned by that pointer query; this path does not establish that it clears a separate prior CUDA error.
