[#20083][fix] Seed the NCCL-EP communicator from the torch EP group under the Ray orchestrator - #21070
When MPI is disabled, NcclEpContext obtains its communicator from mapping.moe_ep_group_pg and sets _ep_mpi_comm to None. This avoids creating an EP communicator from Ray’s singleton MPI_COMM_WORLD.
When MPI is enabled, the existing MPI split, unique-ID broadcast, and NCCL communicator initialization remain in use. DeepEP’s similar MPI-split path and the separate warmup socket-accumulation issue are out of scope.
The supplied report describes a successful two-node TP16/EP16 Ray serving run. It reports 5 passing CPU-only tests with 4 warnings. A multi-GPU Ray and NCCL-EP end-to-end check is not included.
QA Engineer Review
The CPU-only unit tests cover both bootstrap branches, communicator setup, timeout-proxy registration, teardown order, and MPI-only cleanup. The test is listed in the l0_a10.yml and l0_rtx_pro_6000.yml CI test lists.
Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. The unit tests cover the bootstrap and cleanup logic, but a multi-GPU Ray and NCCL-EP end-to-end test is not included.
Per-File QA Perspective

Under orchestrator_type: ray every GPU actor runs with TLLM_DISABLE_MPI=1 and is not started by mpirun, so its MPI_COMM_WORLD has one rank. NcclEpContext.__init__ built the NCCL-EP communicator from mpi_comm().Split(mapping.pp_rank, mapping.moe_ep_rank), which on that path gives every rank a 1-rank communicator (ncclCommInitRankScalable ... rank 0 nranks 1 logged once per rank, grep -oE 'nRanks [0-9]+ nNodes [0-9]+' | sort | uniq -c prints 8 nRanks 1 nNodes 1 for an EP8 group) while the MoE receive buffers are sized from mapping.moe_ep_size. On an NCCL-EP build with the dispatch assert enabled the first dispatch aborts on recv_x->sizes[0] == group->nRanks; on the 1.3.0rc28 wheel the group is silently created with the wrong size.
This change keeps the MPI split on the MPI orchestrator (and for the MPI-based test infrastructure and microbenchmarks, which was the reason the MPI path was chosen) and, when mpi_disabled(), seeds the communicator from the torch EP process group that the Ray worker has already initialised: nccl.ep.interop.torch.get_nccl_comm_from_group(mapping.moe_ep_group_pg). The helper ships with the embedded nccl.ep package (nccl/ep/interop/torch.py); it creates a fresh communicator whose membership mirrors the group by broadcasting a unique id over that group. _ep_mpi_comm is None on the Ray path, which destroy() already handles.
deep_ep_utils.py builds the DeepEP communicator with the same mpi_comm().Split(...) pattern (two places) and will hit the same 1-rank problem under Ray; it is out of scope here and left for a follow-up, since DeepEP under Ray has not been run.

It stubs the nccl namespace package, mpi4py and the CUDA allocations and asserts: the Ray branch (mpi_disabled() true) seeds the communicator with get_nccl_comm_from_group(mapping.moe_ep_group_pg), never calls mpi_comm() / Communicator.init, and leaves _ep_mpi_comm as None; the MPI branch calls Split(mapping.pp_rank, mapping.moe_ep_rank), generates the unique id on EP rank 0 only and never touches the torch-group helper; destroy() runs group.destroy() -> comm.finalize() -> comm.destroy() and frees the MPI sub-communicator only on the MPI branch. Run (CPU only, no GPU) in the public nvcr.io/nvidia/tensorrt-llm/release:1.4.0rc1 image with this branch's nccl_ep_utils.py overlaid on the installed package, the CUDA driver stub on the loader path and --noconftest (the conftest at main patches tensorrt_llm._device_copy, which the rc1 package does not have, so every test in that directory errors at setup there; the sibling test_communication_factory.py behaves identically with and without the overlay under those conditions, 66 passed / 56 failed from the main-vs-rc1 skew):

A multi-GPU Ray + NCCL-EP end-to-end check is still not part of this PR (it needs a Ray actor group with torch.distributed initialised and a usable nccl.ep); suggestions for where it should live are welcome.

…roup under the Ray orchestrator
Under `orchestrator_type: ray` every GPU actor runs with TLLM_DISABLE_MPI=1 and
is not started by mpirun, so its MPI_COMM_WORLD has one rank. NcclEpContext
built its NCCL-EP communicator from `mpi_comm().Split(pp_rank, moe_ep_rank)`,
which therefore produced a 1-rank communicator on every rank (NCCL logs
`rank 0 nranks 1` eight times for an EP8 group) while the receive buffers
were sized by `mapping.moe_ep_size`. On an NCCL-EP build with the dispatch
assert enabled, the first dispatch aborts on
`recv_x->sizes[0] == group->nRanks`.
When `mpi_disabled()`, seed the communicator from the torch EP process group
that the Ray worker already initialised (`mapping.moe_ep_group_pg`) via the
embedded `nccl.ep.interop.torch.get_nccl_comm_from_group` helper, and leave
`_ep_mpi_comm` as None (`destroy()` already handles that). The MPI
orchestrator, the mpi_pool_executor test infrastructure and the
microbenchmarks keep the MPI split unchanged.
With this change a two-node TP16/EP16 Ray run logs `nRanks 16 nNodes 2` on
every rank, becomes healthy and answers requests.
`deep_ep_utils.py` builds the DeepEP communicator with the same
`mpi_comm().Split(...)` pattern and is left for a follow-up.

Walkthrough
NcclEpContext uses the torch-distributed EP process group when MPI is disabled. When MPI is enabled, it retains the MPI-based communicator setup. CPU-only tests cover both paths and teardown.
The utility imports mpi_disabled. When MPI is disabled, communicator setup uses mapping.moe_ep_group_pg and sets _ep_mpi_comm to None. When MPI is enabled, it retains the MPI split, unique-ID broadcast, and NCCL communicator initialization.
Test bootstrap and teardown tests/unittest/_torch/moe/test_nccl_ep_utils.py, tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_a10.yml, tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_rtx_pro_6000.yml
CPU-only tests check both bootstrap paths, NCCL group configuration, timeout-proxy registration, and teardown. The test is added to the A10 and RTX Pro 6000 pre-merge test lists.
The Ray bootstrap path now has automated unit coverage. No actionable merge-blocking issue remains from the supplied evidence.

Add focused coverage for both NCCL-EP bootstrap branches.
The PR changes only tensorrt_llm/_torch/moe/fused_moe/nccl_ep_utils.py, and the inspected tests do not assert either bootstrap branch.
Add a CPU-only unit test under tests/unittest/_torch/moe/. Mock the NCCL-EP objects and CUDA tensor allocation, not only torch.cuda, because the constructor allocates CUDA tensors. Verify that:
mpi_disabled() == True calls get_nccl_comm_from_group(mapping.moe_ep_group_pg), does not call mpi_comm(), and sets _ep_mpi_comm to None.
mpi_disabled() == False calls Split(mapping.pp_rank, mapping.moe_ep_rank) and does not call the torch-group helper.
destroy() calls comm.finalize() and comm.destroy() for the disabled branch, while skipping MPI Free().
This catches regressions that select the wrong bootstrap or pass the wrong EP process group without requiring a multi-GPU Ray test.

…-only unit test
`NcclEpContext` now has two bootstrap branches: the Ray orchestrator path seeds the
NCCL communicator from `mapping.moe_ep_group_pg`, the MPI path splits `MPI_COMM_WORLD`
by pipeline stage. `tests/unittest/_torch/moe/test_nccl_ep_utils.py` stubs the `nccl`
namespace package, `mpi4py` and the CUDA allocations and asserts:
- `mpi_disabled()` true: `get_nccl_comm_from_group(mapping.moe_ep_group_pg)` becomes
the comm, `mpi_comm()` and `Communicator.init` are never called, `_ep_mpi_comm` is
None, and the group is created from that comm with the LL rank-major config.
- `mpi_disabled()` false: `mpi_comm().Split(mapping.pp_rank, mapping.moe_ep_rank)`,
the unique id is generated on EP rank 0 only and broadcast from root 0, and the
torch-group helper is never called.
- `destroy()` runs `group.destroy()` -> `comm.finalize()` -> `comm.destroy()`, frees
the MPI sub-communicator only on the MPI branch, and unregisters the timeout proxy.
Registered next to `test_communication_factory.py` in `l0_a10.yml` and
`l0_rtx_pro_6000.yml` (the CPU-only tests ride those lists; there is no CPU job).

there): `5 passed in 13.03s`.

`destroy()` unregisters the MoE-comm timeout proxy before `group.destroy()`, because the

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.
This fixes the Ray bootstrap, and it does so without changing the MPI path. destroy() already handles _ep_mpi_comm is None, so teardown needed no changes. The unit test pins the branch choice, the group passed to the helper, and the LIFO teardown order, which covers the regression risk in this diff.
Things to address or follow up on:
Add a guard on communicator size. The original bug was a communicator whose rank count differed from moe_ep_size, and it either asserted at the first dispatch or went unnoticed. A one-line check after the if/else would catch this class of bug at init on both orchestrators. See the inline comment.
The two branches build different groups. On the MPI path, the split color is pp_rank only, so the communicator spans the whole PP stage. On the Ray path, it spans exactly the EP group. The two agree only when moe_tp_size == 1 and cp_size == 1. Please either state that assumption or switch the MPI color to something EP-group-scoped. If that is out of scope here, the size check above would at least turn a mismatch into a clear error.
DeepEP follow-up. The description says deep_ep_utils.py has the same Split() pattern in two places. Please open a tracking issue and link it here, so the known Ray breakage for DeepEP doesn't depend on someone rereading this PR.
Multi-GPU coverage. The only end-to-end evidence is the manual two-node run. If a Ray multi-GPU stage exists that can force NCCL_EP, a short smoke test there would protect this path. Otherwise, please note it as a known gap.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Please add a size check after the if/else, for example:
ifself.comm.nranks!=self.ep_size: # or whatever nccl4py exposes for comm sizeraiseRuntimeError(
f"NCCL-EP communicator has {self.comm.nranks} ranks but moe_ep_size={self.ep_size}"
)
The bug fixed here was exactly this mismatch, and it only showed up through a dispatch assert in some builds. On the 1.3.0rc28 wheel it didn't show up at all. The MPI branch can also mismatch: Split(mapping.pp_rank, ...) groups every rank in the PP stage, which is more than moe_ep_size when moe_tp_size > 1 or cp_size > 1. A check at init makes both cases fail loudly. If you want to keep it, a unit test for this is easy to add with the existing mocks.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The docstring says these tests "run in the CPU-only stage", but the file has no pytest.mark.cpu_only marker, and the test-list changes register it only on the A10 and RTX Pro 6000 GPU stages. tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml exists now. Please consider adding pytestmark = pytest.mark.cpu_only and listing the file in l0_cpu.yml instead of the GPU stages. If it has to stay on GPU stages (for example because the CPU image lacks something), please update the docstring so it doesn't claim otherwise.

torch.distributedinitialised and a usablenccl.ep); suggestions for where it should live are welcome.Note for reviewers: the socket accumulation during warmup that stopped the one-node runs in the issue is a separate defect ([Bug]: Ray orchestrator with attention DP and TRTLLM_FORCE_COMM_METHOD=NCCL_EP: each rank accumulates thousands of listening TCP sockets during warmup (1.3.0rc28) #20082) and is not addressed here.
