Summary

  • Root cause: The remote MPI session's launcher path spends avoidable time in two places, which pushes a correct run past the harness's fixed 60 s budget during teardown: submit_sync sleeps 8 s after each empty 0.1 s poll instead of blocking on the response socket, and the launcher stops the MPI Comm server by importing all of tensorrt_llm just to send one shutdown message.
  • Fix: Cut remote MPI session submit_sync wait and launcher stop latency. submit_sync blocks on poll(SYNC_IDLE_INTERVAL) instead of sleeping, and the launcher sends the HMAC-signed shutdown with a small pyzmq helper instead of importing the whole package; a CPU-only unit test covers the prompt return.
  • Original test: bash .repair-bot/reproduce/6913451-c98b9765d85f-1791975185945285784/tot/handoff/drive_task_kwargs.sh

Reproduction comparison

  • Failed commit: running at 4393129
  • ToT: repro_on_tot at c98b976
    Signature: subprocess.CalledProcessError: Command '['bash', '/code/tensorrt_llm/tests/unittest/llmapi/_test_remote_mpi_session.sh', 'task_kwargs']' returned non-zero exit status 124.
  • Signature relation: pending

Dev Engineer Review

  • RemoteMpiCommSessionClient.submit_sync now waits on the response socket for up to SYNC_IDLE_INTERVAL instead of sleeping between short polls. poll(timeout=0.1) retains its default for other callers.
  • The launcher sends the MPI Comm server shutdown message with pyzmq. It pickles None, appends the HMAC-SHA256 digest, and avoids importing tensorrt_llm.
  • No test execution results were supplied.

QA Engineer Review

  • tests/unittest/llmapi/test_mpi_session.py adds a CPU-only delayed-response test for synchronous submission. It verifies the task is synchronous, both responses arrive, and the call returns before the 8-second poll timeout.
  • The test file is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml and l0_a100.yml.
  • Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. The supplied test evidence does not show a direct test of the new shutdown-message framing or send-error path.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/llmapi/mpi_session.py — Verify that synchronous submissions return promptly when a response arrives, while pending responses and shutdown behavior remain correct. poll now accepts a timeout and defaults to 0.1 seconds.
  • tensorrt_llm/llmapi/trtllm-llmapi-launch — Verify that the direct pyzmq shutdown message matches the server’s expected HMAC framing and that launcher exit status propagation remains correct.
  • tests/unittest/llmapi/test_mpi_session.py — Adds a CPU-only prompt-return test for delayed responses. The test file is listed in the two test-db CI lists noted above; no manual-QA listing was found in the supplied search results.

…stop latency

test_remote_mpi_session[task_kwargs] runs `timeout 60 mpirun -np 2
trtllm-llmapi-launch ...` and was killed at 60 s after the task had
already exited 0. Two avoidable costs in the launcher path pushed a
correct run past that limit:

- RemoteMpiCommSessionClient.submit_sync slept SYNC_IDLE_INTERVAL (8 s)
after every empty 0.1 s poll, so a result that arrived just after the
first poll waited ~8 s more. It now blocks in poll() on the response
socket for up to SYNC_IDLE_INTERVAL and returns as soon as the result
  arrives.
- The launcher stopped the MPI Comm server with
  `python3 -m tensorrt_llm.llmapi.mgmn_leader_node --action stop`, which
imports all of tensorrt_llm (torch, custom ops, LLM API, MPI) only to
send one None message; that alone took ~30 s on the CPU-only aarch64
CI host. The launcher now sends the same HMAC-signed pickled None with
  pyzmq directly.

Walkthrough

The synchronous MPI session polling path now uses its configured idle interval as the queue timeout. The launcher sends the MGMN shutdown message directly over ZeroMQ. A CPU-only test covers delayed synchronous responses.

The change removes slow imports and sleeps from MPI session submission and launcher shutdown. The direct shutdown sender keeps two existing weaknesses: it may wait indefinitely if the server is gone, and it can report success after the shutdown message fails. Both fixes are small. Merging is reasonable with follow-up.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Test the direct shutdown protocol and unavailable-server path.

The supplied test context covers delayed synchronous responses, not this new shutdown sender. A framing mismatch could leave the server running; an unavailable server could leave the launcher waiting during cleanup. Add a small subprocess test for an authenticated None received by a queue at the configured IPC address. Add an unavailable-server case with a bounded timeout. The likely location is tests/unittest/llmapi/test_mpi_session.py.

As per path instructions, “for each new or materially changed observable behavior,” identify a meaningful test and leave an inline comment for a material coverage gap.

Bound the shutdown socket teardown.

If the server is absent, socket.send() can queue the shutdown message. The with block then closes the socket with the default infinite linger and can wait indefinitely.

The previous ZeroMqQueue stop path had the same unbounded behavior, so this is not a regression from replacing --action stop. It remains an unbounded shutdown path. Set a bounded linger before sending.

Return a failure status for a ZeroMQ error.

If connect() or send() raises zmq.ZMQError, the handler prints the error but exits with status 0. The caller stores that status in mpi_exit_code, logs it, and propagates it when the task succeeds. The launcher can therefore report shutdown success after the shutdown message fails.

The previous stop_server_main path had the same status-masking behavior, so this change preserves the issue.

Heads-up from #20608, which fixes a hang in the same launcher stop path. The comm server's control socket is a ZMQ PAIR socket. It takes a new client only after it has processed the previous client's disconnect, and while it waits for the last task's worker teardown, a single stop request sent right after the task exits is dropped. The leader then never shuts down and the job hangs after the test has finished. That's 2 of 2 runs of the Kimi-K3 DWDP16 perf-sanity lane on 16 GB300 ranks.

#20608 keeps mgmn_leader_node --action stop, but makes it:

  • resend on a new connection until the server replies shutdown-ack, which the server now sends as soon as it reads the request;
  • exit 1 if no ack ever comes.

A send-once helper in the launcher would bring the hang back, but a lightweight sender is fine as long as it keeps that loop: a new PAIR connection per attempt, poll for the HMAC-signed "shutdown-ack" frame (skipping other messages), LINGER 0 on close, about 300 attempts of 1 s, then exit 1. Whichever PR lands second should carry it over. I'm happy to help port it.

Preserve the shutdown retry-and-acknowledgement protocol. The new helper sends None once and exits without confirming receipt. A PAIR socket can drop this request while transitioning from the previous client, leaving the server running until timeout. #20608, merged October 21, fixed this with fresh-connection retries, shutdown-ack, bounded socket cleanup, and failure exit status. This helper bypasses those protections. Keep the lightweight sender, but preserve that protocol and test the actual launcher path.

RepairBot’s #20293 identified unnecessary TensorRT-LLM imports during MPI shutdown as a contributor to NVBUG6913451’s timeouts, and #20434 builds on that work. We chose #20434 because it preserves the acknowledged shutdown protocol from #20608, including retries and failure propagation, while #20293 uses a send-once approach; the separate polling improvement is already covered by merged #20232. #20434 also adds dedicated helper, launcher and packaging tests, with five affected MPI variants passing on both ARM and x86 in CI 66405 before the latest rebase—supporting evidence, though not proof that every intermittent timeout is resolved.
