KVCM V2 passes four CPU tensors to a CUDA kernel that dereferences them directly from the GPU. Under Confidential Compute, those host allocations are not directly GPU-addressable; this is not an ordinary host-initiated H2D copy, so the kernel faults.

When host mappings are unavailable, gather the active base-page rows in native C++, copy plane 0 into device staging with per-pool cudaMemcpy2DAsync transfers, and invoke the existing, unmodified GPU kernel to derive the attention K/V layout. V2 derives V offsets arithmetically from K, so this avoids uploading the redundant V plane. The expansion arithmetic remains implemented in one place.

Use this staging path for the default manager, TriAttention snapshots, and MiniMax-M3 virtual shared-draft pools that also pass host pointers directly to the expansion kernel. MiniMax's virtual pools reuse the materializer with their own conversion metadata. Preserve the native non-CC paths.

SWA/per-layer and DeepSeek V4 already perform host-initiated H2D uploads before gathering on the GPU. Leave those paths unchanged under both CC and non-CC. The earlier active-row/plane-0 upload branches reduced bytes but added CPU gather work and conditional staging state; they are outside the correctness fix until measurements establish a net performance benefit.

Validate dtype, shape and layout at the binding boundary on every invocation. Gate the CUDA addressability queries for all four inputs behind the existing TLLM_DEBUG_MODE=1 mode so normal decode steps do not incur repeated driver queries. This retains synchronous diagnostics without adding a process-wide raw-pointer cache or buffer-lifetime bookkeeping. Keep snapshot row selection independent of the IndexMapper's asynchronously consumed copy-index buffer.

TLLM_KVCM_V2_DEVICE_PAGE_TABLE is an internal support and test override rather than a public configuration surface. auto is the production default. Forcing 1 lets non-CC CI exercise the CC-only device-staging path; forcing 0 isolates the established native path and must not be used under CC.

Dirty-row staging improvements are tracked separately in TRTLLM-15635.

Test Coverage

  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_kv_cache_manager_v2_device_page_table.py: native/device equivalence, staging reuse, snapshots, heterogeneous pools, layout validation, and preservation of the existing per-layer full-table upload. Fresh subprocesses enable TLLM_DEBUG_MODE=1 before its first cached read and exercise addressability checks for each of the four kernel inputs.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/msa/test_minimax_m3_shared_draft_layers.py: real base and virtual-pool materialization in native and forced-device modes, reordered/shrinking batches, source mutation, invalid pages, and untouched inactive output rows.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/kv_cache_compression/: TriAttention snapshot integration and updated manager test doubles.

Walkthrough

The change adds validated native utilities for base-page row gathering and CUDA uploads. KVCacheManagerV2 selects host or device page-table staging, materializes snapshots, and optionally expands page tables on the device. Attention backends and CUDA tests use the new path.

The PR adds a device-staging path for page-table materialization, but the current code can still accept invalid or foreign-GPU tensors and the target confidential-compute success case is skipped in testing. These gaps could cause asynchronous GPU faults or leave the new path unverified, so merge should wait for fixes or explicit owner acceptance.

Extract the private-attribute stub into one helper.

Five tests repeat the same object.__new__ construction and set the same four private attributes (Lines 132-136, 208-212, 245-249, 265-269, 293-297). _prepare_host_rows also reads _use_device_staging and _row_capacity on the out is None branch. If that method starts reading one more attribute, every one of these tests fails with AttributeError instead of the assertion under test. Extract one module-level helper so the coupling lives in a single place.

Add context messages to the precondition checks.

These five TLLM_CHECK calls report only the failed expression. A caller that passes a mismatched page-table shape gets no dimension values to act on. Validate the remaining page-table arguments at this boundary.

The two new checks cover input contiguity and output placement. copyIndex, indexScales, and kvOffset stay unchecked, and input is not checked for CPU placement. copyBatchBlockOffsetsToDevice is noexcept and dereferences those three tensors from inside the kernel, so a pageable or misplaced tensor produces an asynchronous illegal access at an arbitrary later point instead of an error at the call. The Python layer added _check_page_table_is_gpu_addressable in tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache_manager_v2.py for exactly this reason. Checking here also protects native and test callers that bypass that Python guard.

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.

Two whole-PR notes, both minor:

  • TLLM_KVCM_V2_DEVICE_PAGE_TABLE is a new user-reachable env var but isn't documented anywhere. If it's intended as a support/debug override (force-testing the CC path on non-CC hardware, escape hatch if auto misfires), a short entry in the docs — or at least a sentence in the PR description saying it's deliberately undocumented — would help whoever hits it in a support ticket. The strict ValueError on unparseable values is a nice touch.

  • On the CodeRabbit note about test lists: unittest/_torch/executor is already registered as a directory in l0_cpu.yml, l0_h100.yml, and l0_dgx_b300.yml, so test_kv_cache_manager_v2_device_page_table.py will run in CI without a test-list change. No follow-up needed there.

Smaller maintainability point: _page_table_materializer is a private attribute of the manager, but it's now consumed from three modules (triattention, DSV4, and the kv_cache_compression conftest stub had to grow it too). A public property (page_table_materializer or narrower uses_device_page_table flags on the manager) would keep the fixture and cross-module callers off the private surface. Optional.

I checked the plane-0-only staging contract against all three consumers — the expansion kernel, the SWA compiled gather, and the DSV4 sliding-table kernel each read only plane 0 of the source — and the identity copy-index tensors are sized to their staging tables, so they stay in bounds. The pageable-fresh-staging rationale (raw cudaMemcpy2DAsync being invisible to PyTorch's pinned caching allocator) is correct and well documented in the code.

The remaining review-body items are addressed in e46366ee98:

  • Extracted the repeated materializer test stub and added explicit TriAttention device-path coverage.
  • Added contextual launcher diagnostics and replaced the repeated K/V-plane literal with kKvFactor.
  • Validated dtype, contiguity, rank, extents, and source/metadata placement at the nanobind boundary. The binding deliberately supports both valid arrangements: mapped CPU inputs on the established non-CC path and CUDA inputs on the device-staging path. It does not add a per-step pinned-memory query; construction validates the native path once, and pinnedness is not sufficient under CC.
  • Added the narrow uses_device_page_table transport predicate. Snapshot materialization separately checks the stronger device-expansion capability and reports a named RuntimeError for staging-only managers.
  • Documented TLLM_KVCM_V2_DEVICE_PAGE_TABLE in the PR description as an internal support/test override. auto remains the production default, and forcing 0 is explicitly unsafe under CC.

No test-list change is required: unittest/_torch/executor is registered in l0_a10.yml, l0_b300.yml, l0_cpu.yml, l0_dgx_b300.yml, l0_gb300_multi_gpus.yml, l0_h100.yml, and l0_sanity_check.yml.

The rebased delta passes pre-commit, Python byte-compilation, and git diff --check.

Add coverage for CC and cross-device native sources.

Test coverage summary: 26 test functions were added, including host gathering, native validation, policy selection, device-path equivalence, manager integration, and destination validation. No test functions were modified or removed. Existing directory entries in l0_h100.yml, l0_dgx_b300.yml, l0_b300.yml, l0_gb300_multi_gpus.yml, and l0_cpu.yml include unittest/_torch/executor, so the module is registered in test-db/.

Coverage verdict: insufficient.

  • test_native_materializer_accepts_each_gpu_readable_source_independently is skipped when prefer_pinned() is false, including the all-device case required for Confidential Compute.
  • Every .cuda() source and the output use the current CUDA device. Add a multi-GPU case with a source on a different device and assert the behavior required by checkTensorReadableByGpu.

Clarify the _device_base_page_rows is None assertion for the forced path.

Line 807 asserts that the device staging buffer is None only when the override is "1". Line 670 asserts the same value for the auto non-device path. The assertion therefore holds for both settings and does not distinguish the forced device path. State the intent, which is that the buffer is allocated lazily on the first copy, and assert the selected mode explicitly.

KVCM V2 passes four host tensors to a CUDA kernel that dereferences them directly from the GPU. Confidential Compute cannot map those host allocations into the GPU address space, so the kernel faults instead of performing an H2D transfer.

When host mappings are unavailable, gather the active base-page rows in native C++, copy plane 0 into device staging with per-pool pitched H2D transfers, and invoke the existing GPU kernel to derive the attention K/V layout. V2 derives V offsets arithmetically from K, so transferring only plane 0 halves the page-table H2D volume.

Use this device-staging path for the default manager, SWA/DeepSeek V4, and TriAttention snapshots. Preserve their established non-CC paths, including the full-table uploads and GPU gathers.

Validate the layout and GPU-addressability contracts for the page table, copy index, index scales, and K/V offset tensors. Keep snapshot row selection independent of the IndexMapper's asynchronously consumed copy index buffer.

Add forced-device tests that exercise the CC-only paths on non-CC systems and compare their results with the native host-mapped implementation.

Signed-off-by: Dan Hansen <218031328+dhansen-nvidia@users.noreply.github.com>
Mark the IndexMapper coverage CUDA-only and add forced-device DSV4 and TriAttention coverage. Initialize inactive device-staging rows before capacity-wide SWA and DSV4 gathers so their unused tail reads remain defined.

Validate tensor dtype, layout, shape, and placement at the native boundary, improve copy diagnostics, and expose a narrow manager predicate for compression consumers. Preserve both valid source arrangements: mapped CPU tensors on the established non-CC path and CUDA tensors on the CC staging path.

Signed-off-by: Dan Hansen <218031328+dhansen-nvidia@users.noreply.github.com>
Validate each page-table kernel input independently against the output GPU before launch. Accept CUDA tensors and mapped host tensors whose original pointers are directly readable, including registered host memory when the device supports using its host pointer, and reject inaccessible inputs synchronously rather than surfacing a later asynchronous kernel fault.

Keep the GIL held while gather_k_block_offsets reads mutable IndexMapper state, restoring the pre-PR serialization against add/remove operations. Complete the TriAttention test doubles with the device-page-table predicates required by the manager interface so the existing host-path tests do not fail during setup.

Preserve mixed host/device source arrangements and cover all 16 placements of the page table, copy index, index scales, and K/V offset tensors, together with the pageable-host failure path.

Signed-off-by: Dan Hansen <218031328+dhansen-nvidia@users.noreply.github.com>
Make the destination device current before issuing raw base-page H2D copies, so multi-GPU callers execute the transport in the output device context.

Initialize unused DSV4 staging rows with BAD_PAGE_INDEX. Exercise the all-CUDA source arrangement when host mappings are unavailable and assert that forced SWA coverage selects device expansion before comparing results.

… staging

Extend native-versus-forced-CC equivalence coverage to heterogeneous page strides with SWA scratch reuse disabled. Verify that the per-layer conversion path is selected and does not allocate a redundant materializer staging source, while retaining the SWA case.

Signed-off-by: Dan Hansen <218031328+dhansen-nvidia@users.noreply.github.com>
Retain the established full-table H2D uploads and GPU gathers for SWA and DeepSeek V4. These paths already work under CC; remove the additional staging branches and their unused helper rather than include an unmeasured transfer optimization in the correctness fix.

Gate CUDA addressability queries behind TLLM_DEBUG_MODE=1 so normal decode steps do not incur repeated driver queries or require a pointer-lifetime cache. Keep shape, dtype and layout checks unconditional, and exercise debug validation in fresh subprocesses for all four kernel inputs.

Route MiniMax-M3 virtual shared-draft pools through the existing CC materializer and unmodified GPU expansion kernel, using each pool’s conversion metadata. Limit the base materializer output to storage pools and retain the native virtual-pool path when staging is not selected.

Add real-kernel coverage for base and virtual pools, reordered and shrinking batches, source mutations, invalid pages and untouched inactive output rows. Retain per-layer equivalence coverage for the original full-table transport.

Signed-off-by: Dan Hansen <218031328+dhansen-nvidia@users.noreply.github.com>
Initialize CUDA with torch.cuda.init() instead of importing init_cuda_once from the removed KVCM V2 Python backend. This removes the executor-test collection failure and the same stale import from the debug-validation subprocesses.

…draft views

Size CC staging and identity indices for output beam capacity, including cross-attention broadcasts, and reject oversized batches before launching materialization.

Route the NVFP4 MiniMax-M3 draft view through the existing materializer with its own conversion metadata while retaining the native non-CC path. Cover full and narrow staging, cross-attention beams, and native versus staged draft inputs; update scheduler and MiniMax test doubles for the current manager interface.

…er accessors

Replace the two bufferCast calls in copyBasePageRowsToDevice with getBufferPtr. Upstream NVIDIA#20205 removed bufferCast; use its replacement to restore CUDA compilation while preserving constness and runtime dtype validation.

…zation

Share page-table materializer setup between the base and FP4 MLA layouts so the inherited copy path has the required transport state. Correct the MiniMax-M3 dense-layer test fixture to provide that state.

Exercise native and forced device staging in the FP4 MLA regression test, checking all pools and both planes across reordered and shrinking batches.

Signed-off-by: Dan Hansen <218031328+dhansen-nvidia@users.noreply.github.com>
…ate page-table tests

Allocate kv_offset explicitly using prefer_pinned() so native page-table expansion can read it from the GPU. Check all four native kernel inputs are pinned in the FP4 MLA regression test.

Remove obsolete prepare_resource arguments from device-page-table tests; add_dummy_requests now prepares resources unconditionally.
