build(deps): bump jvector from 4.0.1 to 4.0.2, with its native vectorization off unless configured - #10540
Conversation
…ization off unless configured jvector 4.0.2 carries the duplicate-neighbour fix (datastax/jvector#738, ArcadeData#765) and switches its native Highway provider on by default on Linux x86_64 and aarch64. ArcadeDB now sets jvector.enable_native_vectorization from the new setting arcadedb.vectorIndex.nativeVectorization (default false) before jvector picks its provider, unless the user already set that property or its deprecated alias. What looks good
Minor suggestions (non-blocking)
CI noteI agree with the author's comment that the red No new dependency was added, only a version bump of an existing one. The new native library inside the jvector jar is covered by the same Apache 2.0 artifact, but double-check that |
- note the log-text dependency of JVectorProviderSelectionTest in the jvector bump checklist - test provider=panama together with enable_native_vectorization=true (the provider property beats both) - say in the setting's description that it writes jvector.enable_native_vectorization when the user has not set it - make the two jvector property constants package-private - tag JVectorProviderSelectionTest slow (it starts a JVM per case), so it runs in the slow lane Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Measured the three jvector variants of this PR on an i9-12900HK host (mini), index build wall time, one fresh process per run, 2 pinned P-cores, ABBA rounds, round 0 dropped, scored with our ab.py (median of per-pair ratios, bootstrap 95% CI; a pair is dropped when its two arms differ by more than 5 C at start or by more than 1 point in throttled share of their own run time). Ratio > 1 means the second arm is slower.
Reading: with native vectorization on, 4.0.2 builds 22 to 29 percent slower than 4.0.1 or than 4.0.2 with it off at 128 dimensions (ArcadeDB NONE and INT8, and jvector alone 14 to 30 percent), so keeping it off unless configured is the right default. With it off, 4.0.2 is indistinguishable from 4.0.1 in every workload. At 768-d the native-on vs native-off cell has the minimum 7 clean pairs and shows no difference; the other high-dimension cells with native vectorization on kept too few clean pairs to judge: on this mobile CPU the native arm runs hotter and throttles a larger share of its run, which the pair rule drops, so those two cells stay open; we will rerun them on a setup that does not throttle. |
Bumps io.github.jbellis:jvector from 4.0.1 to 4.0.2 (the latest release) and keeps its new native vectorization off unless it is configured. No open or merged PR covers this bump (the last one was #8518, 4.0.0-rc.9 to 4.0.1).
Why bump. 4.0.2 fixes duplicate neighbour ids in the graph builder (datastax/jvector#738, #765), which matters for graphs built with approximate (PQ) scoring. It is a drop-in for the code here: in a swap of the jar into a build of main, recall@10 was identical to four decimals for FLAT and INT8 on 100k SIFT vectors, and the sparse index, reopen after close and INT8 paths behaved as before.
Why native vectorization is off by default for now. 4.0.2 bundles a native library (Highway, called through the Java foreign function API) and uses it by default on Linux x86_64 and aarch64 with Java 22 or later. Each distance between two vectors becomes one foreign call, and vectors become MemorySegment-backed objects. In an untimed profile of an index build of 128-dimension vectors on an AVX2 laptop (E-cores), about half of the samples were in that per-call wrapper and a smaller share in the SIMD kernel, and the build was slower with native on in every untimed sample. That is a hypothesis about a mechanism and one CPU class, not a benchmark. A measured comparison on more CPUs (AVX-512, aarch64, higher dimensions) follows, and the default can change if the evidence supports it. Until then the bump keeps the behaviour of 4.0.1, which is the Java Vector API.
How to enable it. Set
arcadedb.vectorIndex.nativeVectorization=true(JVM scope, so a-D, an environment variable orGlobalConfigurationbefore the first database is opened), or pass-Djvector.enable_native_vectorization=trueto the JVM. An explicit jvector property, or its deprecated aliasjvector.experimental.enable_native_vectorization, always wins over the setting in both directions, and-Djvector.vectorization_providerwins over both.VectorApiSupport.configureJVectorProvider(), which already runs inLocalDatabase's class initializer and beforeVectorApiSupport.jvectorProvider()resolves jvector (added in #10077), now also applies the setting, so it works for embedded and server use.Packaging notes. The native library sits in the jvector jar for Linux x86_64 and aarch64. jvector copies it to
java.io.tmpdirand loads it from there. If that directory is read-only or mounted noexec, or the platform is macOS or Windows, jvector logs a warning and uses the Java Vector API.--enable-native-access=ALL-UNNAMED(already passed byserver.shand the test configuration) silences the restricted-method warning that Java 22 to 25 print otherwise. It needs--add-modules jdk.incubator.vectortoo. A GraalVM native image is unchanged: #10077 forces jvector's scalar provider there unless the user chose one, and that covers the new native provider as well.Tests. New
JVectorProviderSelectionTeststarts a fresh JVM per case (jvector chooses once per JVM) and asserts the provider class: Panama by default and with the setting false, native with the setting, with-Djvector.enable_native_vectorization=trueand with the deprecated alias, and the explicit property or a forced provider winning over the setting. Where the platform has no native provider (not Linux x86_64 or aarch64, or Java before 22) the same cases expect Panama, so nothing is skipped.VectorApiSupportTestgains the decision-table and default checks. Run inmaven:3.9-amazoncorretto-25(Java 25, Linux x86_64):VectorApiSupportTestandJVectorProviderSelectionTest(16 tests), and the vector suite of the engine (*Vector*Test,Issue*Vector*,LSMVector*,LSMSparse*,PQ*,Quantiz*,JVector*,GloVe*,DuplicateVectorId*and the quantization and PQ file issue tests, benchmarks excluded: 977 tests, 0 failures) on the default and again withJAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS=-Djvector.enable_native_vectorization=true(977 tests, 0 failures). Not run: the GraalVM native image build, macOS, Windows, aarch64.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
