Why

v0.28 item 2: run LTP and musl libc-test against VeridianOS, so the syscall work in item 3 is measured against upstream conformance suites instead of the in-house runtime tests alone. PR #28 gave LTP the shared /dev/shm its results go through; this PR adds the suites, the runner, the expected results per architecture, and the gate and CI hooks.

What changes

  • scripts/build-compat-rootfs.sh <arch> builds LTP 20260930 (runtest/syscalls and the Open POSIX Test Suite, static) and musl libc-test (7b95dfa5) with the architecture's musl toolchain, and writes target/rootfs-compat-<arch>.img.
    • Sources are pinned: LTP by the SHA-256 published with the release, libc-test by commit.
    • Build trees live in /opt/veridian/compat-build/<arch>, not /tmp or target/, and a stamp skips rebuilds when nothing changed.
    • Three LTP sources do not compile against musl (glibc extensions). They are listed in the script with the reason and reported as NOTBUILT, not deleted silently.
    • The image gets the users and groups LTP requires (IDcheck.sh): the base root's /etc is empty.
  • In-guest runner: userland/tests/compat/run.sh and compat_exec.
    • Each test costs one extra process. My first version used several per test, and process creation is slow enough here that it doubled the run time.
    • The time limit is kept by polling waitpid: VeridianOS has no alarm yet, and LTP's own timeout uses it. At the limit the whole process group is killed.
  • Host driver: tools/compat/compat.py, with 37 unit tests run by the gate and CI. --retry runs a test that regressed once more on a fresh guest; it counts only if it fails again.
    • It boots the guest again after a test that hangs or crashes it, and records that test as HANG or CRASH.
    • --jobs N runs guests side by side. The TCG runs take about four hours with seven guests.
    • --resume, --smoke (the expected passes only), collect (rebuilds results from serial logs), compare and --update.
  • tests/compat/expected-{x86_64,aarch64,riscv64}.tsv record each test's result with the reason it gave.
    • FLAKY marks tests whose result differed between runs, or that pass near the time limit.
    • known: notes cite documented limitations: W^X, MAP_SHARED past a file's pages, and memory exhaustion.
  • Bug fix in tools/mkfs-blockfs: directory entries could cross a 4 KiB block, but the kernel reads directories a block at a time. In a 1,000-file test directory it missed 855 names. Current images were unaffected, because every directory fit in one block; the compat image's 1,600-binary LTP directory would have hit it. Entries now start a new block, and a directory over the 12 blocks the kernel reads is refused. The tool's tests now run in the gate and CI.
  • Gate: --rootfs runs the x86_64 smoke subset (1,844 tests, about ten minutes), and --compat runs the full suites. CI: .github/workflows/compat.yml runs the x86_64 smoke subset weekly, on dispatch, and on PRs that touch the suites (about an hour). The full suites do not fit in a GitHub job: there they ran past the six-hour limit, with timer- and fork-heavy tests taking 30 to 90 s each.
  • musl_runtime_test --only dev_shm_maps_the_file_s_pages: the follow-up promised on PR feat(fs): page-backed tmpfs files and a /dev/shm mount (N-230) #28.
  • Docs: tests/compat/README.md (the procedure), COMPATIBILITY-PLAN X4 with the counts, a KNOWN-LIMITATIONS section on the shared causes, CHANGELOG and MASTER_TODO.

Baseline (2026-10-22)

Suite x86_64 AArch64 RISC-V
LTP syscalls (1,552) 24 pass, 206 WARN 24 pass, 203 WARN 24 pass, 202 WARN
Open POSIX (1,965, incl. 195 compile-only) 1,569 1,565 1,565
musl libc-test (560) 523 525 525

Most LTP tests never reach their check:

  • statfs is ENOSYS, and LTP's library needs it for its temporary directory: about 630 TBROK.
  • The release uname reports makes LTP warn "kernel older than 4.4" on every new-API test; about 205 of them otherwise pass.
  • No kernel .config to read: about 95 TBROK.

Those three are the cheapest wins for item 3.

Other findings:

  • libc-test's malloc-oom and malloc-brk-fail stop the whole RISC-V guest; on the other two they run until the time limit.
  • Open POSIX shm_open/23-1 (1,000 processes) does not finish within the limit.

Checks run

  • scripts/dev/gate.sh --boot --rootfs passed (exit 0) on exactly this tree:
    • host 4,779;
    • boot 43/64/57, and 47/68/61 with -smp 4;
    • BUSYBOX_ALL_PASS on all three architectures, on one and four CPUs (AUDIT-RUNTIME 91/91/89, MUSL-RUNTIME 81/79/79);
    • the new steps: mkfs-blockfs tests, compat unit tests and ruff, and the x86_64 smoke subset (0 regressed).
  • Full suite runs: two on x86_64 and one each on AArch64 and RISC-V. Each compares clean (0 regressed, 0 changed) with its expected list. A third x86_64 run, the smoke subset, found one more flaky test (clock_nanosleep/10-1, a signal race), now marked FLAKY.

Note

Medium Risk
Large new QEMU-driven CI/gate path and a filesystem image tool change that affects how compat rootfs images are built; regressions would show up as false conformance failures or broken images rather than kernel runtime changes in this diff.

Overview
Adds conformance testing for LTP syscalls, the Open POSIX Test Suite, and musl libc-test on x86_64, AArch64, and RISC-V: cross-built compat root images (scripts/build-compat-rootfs.sh), an in-guest runner (run.sh + compat_exec with polling timeouts), and a QEMU host driver (tools/compat/compat.py) that compares runs to tests/compat/expected-<arch>.tsv, supports smoke/resume/parallel jobs, and reboots after hangs or crashes.

Gate and CI now exercise mkfs-blockfs and compat Python unit tests in quick checks; gate.sh --rootfs runs the x86_64 smoke subset and --compat runs full suites locally. A new .github/workflows/compat.yml runs weekly/path-triggered x86_64 smoke under KVM (~3 jobs, longer per-test timeouts).

Fixes mkfs-blockfs so directory entries never span a 4 KiB block (matching kernel read behavior) and refuses directories beyond 12 direct blocks—needed for the compat image’s large LTP binary directory. Docs and baselines are updated; musl_runtime_test gains --only dev_shm_maps_the_file_s_pages.

…ctures

v0.28 item 2. LTP 20260930 (runtest/syscalls and the Open POSIX Test
Suite) and musl libc-test (7b95dfa5) are built with each architecture's
musl toolchain into a compat root filesystem and run in QEMU; every
test's result is recorded in tests/compat/expected-<arch>.tsv, and a test
expected to pass that does not is a regression.

- scripts/build-compat-rootfs.sh: pinned sources (SHA-256, commit),
builds outside /tmp and target/ with a stamp, the three LTP sources
that do not build against musl listed with the reason (NOTBUILT), the
users and groups LTP requires, one list per suite and a smoke list of
  the expected passes.
- userland/tests/compat/run.sh and compat_exec: one process per test
(creating processes is slow enough here that a shell pipeline per test
doubled the run time), a time limit kept by polling (no alarm yet; LTP's
own timeout relies on it), the test's process group killed at the limit.
- tools/compat/compat.py (29 host tests): lists, the QEMU driver (boots
again after a test that hangs or crashes the guest, --jobs, --resume,
--smoke), collect from serial logs, compare and --update.
- mkfs-blockfs: directory entries no longer cross a block (the kernel
reads directories a block at a time and missed 855 of 1,000 names in a
test); a directory over 12 blocks is refused. Its tests run in the gate
  and CI now.
- Gate: --rootfs runs the x86_64 smoke subset, --compat the full suites;
.github/workflows/compat.yml runs x86_64 weekly and on PRs that touch
  the suites.
- musl_runtime_test: --only dev_shm_maps_the_file_s_pages (PR #28).

Baseline (2026-10-22), x86_64 / AArch64 / RISC-V: LTP 23/1,552 pass on
each (410-417 more pass with LTP's "older than 4.4" warning), Open POSIX
1,571 / 1,566 / 1,566 of 1,965, libc-test 523 / 525 / 525 of 560. Most
LTP tests stop in its library on statfs ENOSYS; KNOWN-LIMITATIONS lists
the shared causes, including memory exhaustion stopping the RISC-V guest.

Gate (--boot --rootfs, both CPU counts) on this tree: host 4,779; boot
43/64/57, 47/68/61 with -smp 4; BUSYBOX_ALL_PASS everywhere; x86_64 smoke
subset 0 regressed (23 + 1,376 + 445). Full runs: two on x86_64, one each
on AArch64 and RISC-V; every run compares clean with its list.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added compatibility conformance testing for LTP, Open POSIX, and musl libc-test across x86_64, AArch64, and RISC-V, with architecture-specific results and options to run, resume, and compare tests.
    • Added tools to build compatibility test images and run conformance checks locally, plus weekly automated x86_64 conformance runs.
    • Added an option to run the /dev/shm mapping test individually.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Directory entries now stay within block boundaries, and directories exceeding the supported size are rejected.
  • Documentation
    • Added guides, expected-result baselines, and notes on known conformance limitations.

The changes add tooling to build and run LTP, Open POSIX, and musl libc-test suites across three architectures, record and compare results, and integrate conformance runs with gates and CI. They also update BlockFS directory-entry handling and enable individual selection of the /dev/shm runtime test.

Changes: Compatibility conformance suites

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build compatibility root filesystems
scripts/build-compat-rootfs.sh
The builder fetches and builds pinned suites, stages suite files and the runner, generates test lists, and creates architecture-specific BlockFS images.
Run tests and record results
tools/compat/compat.py, tools/compat/test_compat.py, userland/tests/compat/*
The guest runner and helper execute tests with time limits. The host tool runs QEMU workers, records and compares results, and recovers after guest failures. Unit tests cover the host tooling.
Integrate conformance runs
scripts/dev/gate.sh, scripts/run-compat-tests.sh, .github/workflows/*, tests/compat/README.md, docs/compat/COMPATIBILITY-PLAN.md, docs/KNOWN-LIMITATIONS.md, CHANGELOG.md, to-dos/MASTER_TODO.md
The local gate and x86_64 workflow run compatibility suites. Documentation records commands, expected results, baselines, and known limitations.

BlockFS directory-entry boundaries

Layer / File(s) Summary
Keep directory entries within supported blocks
tools/mkfs-blockfs/src/main.rs, CHANGELOG.md
Entries that would cross a block boundary start in the next block. The writer refuses directories larger than 12 direct blocks, and tests cover multi-block scanning and overflow.

Runtime test selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select the /dev/shm runtime test
userland/tests/musl_runtime_test.c, CHANGELOG.md
The --only table registers dev_shm_maps_the_file_s_pages for individual selection.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6597b

The compatibility workflow is mergeable with owner awareness that later runs may execute changed action code unless its references are pinned.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6597b

The new execution path uses snapshot-backed guests and read-only repository permissions in CI. The main lifecycle weakness is that resumed results are not tied to the kernel or image tested; the standard gate and CI do not enable resume.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Resumed results are keyed only by suite and test ID, without binding them to the kernel, compatibility image, or generated command list. After a rebuild retaining those IDs, an explicit resume can skip changed tests and report or accept historical PASS results. Pinned upstream suites reduce list drift, and the standard gate and CI do not enable resume, limiting exposure to operator-invoked recovery.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The new workflow permits pull-request execution on a GitHub-hosted runner with contents: read. It builds repository-controlled code and enables KVM locally, but declares no repository write permission or secret input. These controls bound declared authority without proving external approval or cache policies.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The host starts QEMU using an argument vector rather than shell evaluation. Test output is redirected to a guest file and selected lines are emitted with COMPAT-LOG prefixes. Failed-test cleanup is restricted to named guest temporary-file prefixes and uses physical filesystem traversal rather than following symlinks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The helper establishes a process group, kills it on timeout and after child completion, and reaps the direct child. Worker teardown kills and waits for its QEMU process. These are concrete containment controls, but process-group cleanup does not establish cleanup of descendants that create another session or group.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Persist a run identity covering the kernel, compatibility image, generated lists, and relevant execution settings, and require a matching identity before reusing results through resume or collection.

Explanation

The title "feat(compat): LTP, Open POSIX and musl libc-test on all three architectures" matches the main change: the PR adds cross-architecture LTP, Open POSIX, and musl libc-test suites with a runner, host driver, and expected results for x86_64, AArch64, and RISC-V. It follows a conventional-commit style and is specific. It does not mention the mkfs-blockfs fix or the CI/gate hooks, which are secondary to the main change.

The Antigravity review job failed on 606e866 before reviewing anything:
`gh pr diff` refuses a diff with terminal escape sequences, and the
execve06 note in all three expected lists held LTP's colour codes
(execve06_child runs with an empty environment, so it never sees
LTP_COLORIZE_OUTPUT=0). note_for now drops escape sequences and other
control characters, with a test, and the three lists are cleaned.

Quick gate: rc=0 (compat tools 30 tests, ruff).

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

Adds cross-build and sharded QEMU execution infrastructure, BlockFS multi-block directory packing in mkfs-blockfs, and per-architecture regression baselines (4,078 tests each) for musl libc-test, the Open POSIX Test Suite, and LTP syscalls across x86_64, AArch64, and RISC-V 64.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • compat_exec.c (main timeout reap path): status is initialized to 0 at line 221. On timeout (lines 253–269), if the blocking waitpid(pid, &status, 0) after SIGKILL fails with an error other than EINTR (for example ECHILD), status stays 0, which WIFEXITED(status) and WEXITSTATUS(status) interpret as a clean exit with code 0 (PASS) and clear timed_out = 0. Initialize status = -1 or check the return value of the blocking waitpid before inspecting WIFEXITED(status).
  • compat_exec.c (clean_dir) and compat_exec.c (clean_tmp):
    • clean_dir collects at most MAX_CLEAN (256) entries in a single pass and returns. A test that creates more than 256 files in /tmp or /dev/shm will leave the excess behind for subsequent tests in the same guest session. Loop until a pass observes fewer than MAX_CLEAN entries (or makes no progress).
    • In main, clean_tmp is only called when rc != 0. Passing tests that leave files in /tmp or segments in /dev/shm accumulate across the guest session until a later test fails or times out.
  • compat.py (Guest.send) and compat.py (Runner.run_one): Guest.send writes and flushes self.proc.stdin without catching BrokenPipeError or OSError. If QEMU exits between self.guest.alive() (line 937) and self.guest.send(...) (line 944), or during the readiness probe in Runner.boot, the uncaught BrokenPipeError escapes Worker.__call__ (which only catches RunError) and aborts the entire shard instead of recording HANG and rebooting the guest.
  • compat.py (cmd_lists): removed is keyed by Path(src).stem and matched against prog in runtest/syscalls, while not-built.tsv records stem as the test name. This works for the current three LTP_EXCLUDE entries because their runtest tag names equal their binary names (prog), but any future excluded test whose runtest/syscalls tag differs from prog (e.g. *_64 or multi-invocation tags) will produce a test ID in not-built.tsv that does not match the runtest/syscalls tag name. Recording the excluded name from runtest/syscalls when filtering would keep the IDs consistent.

Nitpicks

  • musl_runtime_test.c (test_directory_ops): entries was increased from 40 to 160, but the comment at line 629 still reads /* 40 entries * ~28 bytes > 1024 bytes, forces at least two getdents64.
  • compat.py (Guest.close): self.log_fh.close() is guarded by if self.proc is not None:, so if subprocess.Popen raises in Guest.start after self.log_fh is opened, log_fh is not closed.

Adds cross-compiled build infrastructure, an in-guest/host test runner, CI workflows, and per-architecture baseline results for the LTP syscalls, Open POSIX, and musl libc-test conformance suites across x86_64, aarch64, and riscv64, alongside multi-block directory indexing in mkfs-blockfs.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • compat_exec.c (main timeout path): status is initialized to 0 at line 209. If waitpid(pid, &status, 0) after SIGKILL (line 258) fails with errno != EINTR (for example ECHILD), status stays 0, so WIFEXITED(status) evaluates true (WEXITSTATUS(0) == 0), setting rc = 0 and clearing timed_out = 0 (lines 266–269) — reporting a timed-out test as PASS (rc=0 sig=0 timeout=0). Initialize status = -1 before the final blocking waitpid (or only inspect status when waitpid returns pid).
  • compat_exec.c (clean_dir): Cleanup stops after MAX_CLEAN (256) entries in a single pass (while ((e = readdir(d)) != NULL && count < MAX_CLEAN)). A failed FD-, file-, or POSIX-IPC-exhaustion test that leaves more than 256 entries in /tmp or /dev/shm will leak the remainder across subsequent tests on the same guest. Loop the opendir/readdir/nftw pass while count == MAX_CLEAN (with a progress guard in case an entry cannot be removed).
  • compat_exec.c (print_log): The overlong-line drain check if (line[len] == '\0' && len == sizeof(line) - 1) runs after size_t len = strcspn(line, "\r\n"). If an output line longer than 1,023 bytes contains a \r before byte 1,023, len is less than sizeof(line) - 1 and line[len] is '\r', so the remainder of the line is not drained and its tail is read as separate lines. Check whether strchr(line, '\n') == NULL && strlen(line) == sizeof(line) - 1 before truncating at \r\n.
  • compat.py (Worker._range): The while outcome is None: polling loop checks parser.summary, parser.error, parser.panic, parser.prompts, and stalled(...), but never checks parser.retry directly. When compat_exec prints COMPAT-RETRY because the guest is out of processes or memory, the worker waits for the shell prompt (plus time.sleep(1)) or, if ash itself is wedged by the exhaustion, waits out the full limit + grace stall timeout before rebooting. Breaking as soon as parser.retry is not None avoids that delay.
  • compat.py (run_retries) vs. tests/compat/README.md: The README and --retry help state that each regressed test is run once more "on a fresh guest", and run_retries comments "one test per range so each gets a fresh guest", but Worker(run, "retry", ranges)() reuses the same Guest across ranges in Worker.__call__ unless the previous retry crashed, timed out, or stalled. Call self._reboot(...) between ranges when self.name == "retry" (or stop the guest at the end of each retry range) so state from the first retried test cannot taint the second.
  • compat.py (cmd_collect): cmd_collect loads every entry from build.tsv regardless of which suites were actually executed in the supplied serial logs. If logs come from a single-suite run (for example --suites libc-test), results is populated with notbuilt rows for ltp-syscalls and open-posix, causing report to treat those suites as covered and flag all of their runnable tests as missing. Filter build.tsv rows to the suites present in the parsed logs (or add --suites to collect).

Nitpicks

  • userland/tests/musl_runtime_test.c: Placing static void test_dev_shm(void); right above the only_tests table splits the comment /* Tests --only NAME can run alone ... */ from the table declaration; move test_dev_shm above only_tests with the other test functions instead of forward-declaring it mid-comment.
  • tools/mkfs-blockfs/src/main.rs (alloc_dir_slot): When extending a directory to a new block, dir_inode.blocks (the 512-byte sector count) is never updated from the initial BLOCK_SIZE / 512 set in alloc_inode, unlike write_inode_data. Update dir_inode.blocks alongside dir_inode.size so stat.st_blocks on large directories matches the allocated blocks.

Blocking issues

Suggestions

  • Cross-test state pollution in /tmp and /dev/shm (compat_exec.c, compat_exec.c):
    • clean_tmp only runs when rc != 0 and only removes entries prefixed with LTP_ in /tmp and ltp_ in /dev/shm. Open POSIX tests create shared memory objects and semaphores under /dev/shm without an ltp_ prefix (e.g., /shm_*, /posix_*, /sem.*), so timed-out or crashed Open POSIX tests leak tmpfs pages across a worker's batch.
    • Neither clean_tmp nor main restores /tmp permissions (chmod("/tmp", 01777)) or resets UID/GID state if a test mutates /tmp mode bits before failing; in the checked-in baselines (expected-x86_64.tsv, expected-x86_64.tsv), nftw01, nftw6401, and symlink03 fail in tst_tmpdir with mkdtemp(/tmp/LTP_XXXXXX) failed: errno=EACCES(13).
  • Unlinking entries while iterating readdir in clean_dir: Calling nftw to unlink subdirectories/files of dir inside an active readdir(d) loop on dir can skip entries if getdents64 refills across directory compaction. Collect matching names first or re-scan until no matching entries remain.
  • Parallel make -j output interleaving in compile_errors: build_ltp builds Open POSIX tests with make -j"${JOBS}", while compile_errors buffers any undefined reference to ... line into a single pending list and attaches it to whichever compile FAILED verdict line appears next in ltp-make.log. Under parallel builds, linker diagnostics from one target can be attributed to a different target's FAILED line.
  • Retry timing records overwrite initial timing entries without updating times.tsv on failure (compat.py, compat.py): If run_retries re-runs a failed test, Worker._range appends a duplicate (suite, id, ms) entry to run.times, and times.tsv is only written after run_suite completes without an unhandled exception. Deduplicating run.times by (suite, id) (or writing times.tsv in a finally block) avoids duplicate rows and preserves timing data on partial runs.

Nitpicks

  • tools/mkfs-blockfs/src/main.rs: Comment in BlockFsBuilder::write_dir_entry refers to "the kernel's own add_dir_entry"; the kernel method in kernel/src/fs/blockfs.rs is named write_dir_entry.
  • scripts/build-compat-rootfs.sh: Putting all ~1,600 LTP binaries into a single /opt/ltp/testcases/bin directory consumes ~10 of BlockFS's 12 direct blocks (DIRECT_BLOCKS = 12, 48 KiB hard ceiling per directory in BlockFsBuilder::write_dir_entry). Enabling additional LTP runtest files in the future will hit that assertion unless binaries are sharded or indirect blocks are supported for directories.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

Adds cross-built LTP (syscalls and Open POSIX) and musl libc-test conformance suites, an in-guest runner and host QEMU driver with per-architecture expected baselines, a mkfs-blockfs fix preventing directory entries from straddling 4 KiB block boundaries, and gate/CI integration.

Blocking issues

  • Resource-exhaustion exit path in compat_exec.c and compat.py records the unstarted test as EXECFAIL and skips it after rebooting. When open() on OUTFILE or fork() fails in main, compat_exec exits with status 4 so run.sh stops and the host boots a fresh guest. However, compat_exec also prints COMPAT-END <n> <id> rc=127 sig=0 timeout=0 ms=0 before returning 4. Because COMPAT-END is emitted:
    1. SerialParser._line moves test n into parser.done and clears parser.current = None.
    2. Worker._record classifies rc=127 as EXECFAIL and records test n in run.results even though the failure came from prior tests exhausting guest resources before test n could start.
    3. Worker._range then takes the elif parser.done: branch (first = parser.done[-1].n + 1) and resumes the newly booted guest at n + 1 instead of re-running test n (and on a fresh guest where self.used is False, a non-empty parser.done also bypasses the else: raise RunError("the runner started no test ...") guard at lines 14132-14142).

Suggestions

  • Store build.tsv inside the compat rootfs tree alongside the .list files (scripts/build-compat-rootfs.sh, tools/compat/compat.py). build-compat-rootfs.sh writes *.list and *-smoke.list to ${OUT}/usr/lib/compat/, but writes build.tsv (containing NOTBUILT entries and the ~220 compile-only PASS entries for open-posix and libc-test api/*) to target/compat/<arch>/build.tsv (run.out). If target/compat/<arch>/ is cleaned without rebuilding the rootfs image, or if --out is passed to cmd_run or cmd_collect, build.tsv is missing: --smoke then aborts in stale_smoke claiming the smoke lists lack 223 expected passes, and full runs report all compile-only tests as missing. Writing build.tsv into ${OUT}/usr/lib/compat/build.tsv (or falling back to root / "usr" / "lib" / "compat" / "build.tsv") avoids coupling build-time metadata to run.out.
  • Drop self.guest if the post-summary prompt wait times out in Worker._range. If /bin/ash hangs after printing COMPAT-SUMMARY and parser.prompts is still 0 at deadline, _range returns while keeping self.guest alive; the next range in self.ranges then sends its command to a stuck guest and waits a full limit + grace timeout before rebooting.
  • Keep full-run serial logs separate from --smoke runs in cmd_run. Line 14288 writes smoke results to smoke-results.tsv so a smoke run does not overwrite a full run's results.tsv, but lines 14269-14270 still unlink every serial-*.log in run.out.
  • Run clean_tmp unconditionally after each test in compat_exec.c. Currently clean_tmp() only runs when rc != 0; a passing test (or backgrounded child) that leaves /tmp/LTP_* or /dev/shm/ltp_* behind will accumulate files until a subsequent test fails.

Nitpicks

  • userland/tests/compat/compat_exec.c: deadline = start + limit * 1000; multiplies limit as long before widening to long long; limit * 1000LL avoids signed overflow on large SECONDS inputs.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

Adds cross-compilation, BlockFS packaging, an in-guest timeout/execution harness, a multi-worker QEMU host driver, CI/gate integration, and tri-architecture baseline expectations for LTP syscalls, the Open POSIX Test Suite, and musl libc-test, while fixing mkfs-blockfs so directory entries never straddle block boundaries.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • tools/compat/compat.py (lines 456-458, 1160-1170, 1230-1234): In --smoke mode (subset=True), report() filters expected through only_run(expected, results) before calling compare(). Because only_run drops every key absent from results—including keys whose expected status is PASS—running --smoke against a stale compat image (where <suite>-smoke.list was generated before new PASS entries were added to expected-<arch>.tsv) silently drops the un-run PASS tests instead of failing. For --smoke (unlike --first), keeping all expected PASS entries in expected and only filtering out non-PASS entries would ensure every expected pass in the selected suites actually ran.
  • userland/tests/compat/compat_exec.c (lines 204-220) and userland/tests/compat/run.sh (lines 75-77): If open() or fork() fails in compat_exec (e.g., EAGAIN/ENOMEM/ENOSPC after a prior test exhausted guest resources, leaving just enough headroom for run.sh to spawn compat_exec but not for compat_exec to fork the test), compat_exec emits COMPAT-END ... rc=127 and exits 0. Because it exits 0, run.sh continues the loop on the degraded guest and compat.py records every subsequent test in the range as EXECFAIL without rebooting. Exiting with a non-zero code (such as 1) when harness setup (open/fork) fails would allow Worker._range to reboot a fresh guest.

Nitpicks

  • userland/tests/compat/run.sh (lines 59-65): sed -n "$first,\$p" "$list" streams all remaining lines into the pipe even when LAST ($stop) is set, relying on the loop to break at [ "$n" -gt "$stop" ]. Since list entries are numbered contiguously from 1, sed -n "${first},${stop:-$}p" "$list" can bound the range directly.
  • scripts/dev/gate.sh (lines 150-152, 172-189): Passing both --rootfs and --compat runs scripts/build-compat-rootfs.sh x86_64 twice and runs the x86_64 smoke subset right before the full x86_64 suite. Guarding the --rootfs smoke step with [ $compat -eq 0 ] would avoid the redundant build and smoke pass.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

This PR adds the cross-build scripts, in-guest runner (compat_exec and run.sh), host QEMU driver (tools/compat/compat.py), per-architecture baseline result tables, and CI workflow to run LTP syscalls, the Open POSIX Test Suite, and musl libc-test on x86_64, AArch64, and RISC-V, alongside a mkfs-blockfs fix for multi-block directories.

Blocking issues

  • Misclassified LTP skips (TCONF | TWARN) and false pass-count claims across docs and baselines:
In LTP 20260930's new-API library (lib/tst_test.c), do_setup() emits tst_res(TWARN, "Kernel is older than minimal supported 4.4") before checking .min_kver, .needs_kconfigs, or running setup()/test(). When a test subsequently skips via tst_brk(TCONF, ...) or tst_res(TCONF, ...) with zero passes, LTP's do_exit() sets both bits (if (results->skipped && !results->passed) ret |= TCONF; and if (results->warnings) ret |= TWARN;), exiting with 36 (_TCONF | _TWARN).
In classify (compat.py), rc & _TWARN is checked before _TCONF (and _TCONF is tested with rc == _TCONF instead of rc & _TCONF), so every new-API test that was skipped (TCONF) after the initial uname warning is classified as WARN. Then note_for looks up _STATUS_TAG["WARN"] == "TWARN" and records tst_test.c:1101: TWARN: Kernel is older than minimal supported 4.4, discarding the actual TCONF skip reason from record.logs.
    Consequently:
    1. expected-x86_64.tsv, expected-aarch64.tsv, and expected-riscv64.tsv record WARN ("passed with warnings") for dozens of tests for syscalls VeridianOS does not implement at all (ENOSYS / .min_kver skips), e.g. add_key01–05, request_key01–06, bpf_map01, bpf_prog01–07, mseal01–02, move_mount03, fanotify08/22, delete_module02, pidfd_open01–02, cachestat03, close_range02, clock_adjtime01–02, sched_getattr01, sched_setattr01, capget01, capset01–04, process_vm_readv01, process_vm_writev01, etc.
    2. CHANGELOG.md ("another 410 to 417 pass with LTP's warning that the kernel is older than 4.4"), docs/KNOWN-LIMITATIONS.md ("in about 420 tests that otherwise passed"), docs/compat/COMPATIBILITY-PLAN.md, and tests/compat/README.md all claim these ~410–417 WARN tests passed their checks.
Because do_exit() only sets TCONF when !results->passed, rc & _TCONF means zero subtests passed and the test was skipped; classify must check rc & _TCONF before rc & _TWARN (or CONF must take precedence over WARN), and the expected lists and documentation counts must be regenerated to reflect the real pass/warn vs. skip numbers.

Suggestions

  • Clean /tmp and /dev/shm unconditionally in compat_exec:
In main (compat_exec.c), clean_tmp is only called when rc != 0. If a passing Open POSIX or libc-test binary leaves /tmp/LTP_* or /dev/shm/ltp_* artifacts behind, they accumulate across the ~4,000-test run in tmpfs/BlockFS. Since clean_tmp is a fast opendir/readdir scan when nothing matches, calling it unconditionally avoids cross-test state pollution.
  • Avoid hardcoded host target triple in scripts/build-compat-rootfs.sh:
build_image hardcodes target/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/release/mkfs-blockfs. While tools/mkfs-blockfs/.cargo/config.toml sets target = "x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu", honoring ${CARGO_BUILD_TARGET:-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu} would match the rest of the build scripts.
  • Guard against WaitMs / clock jumps or partial line truncation in compat_exec:
In print_log, fgets(line, sizeof(line), f) reads at most 1,023 bytes; if a test emits a line longer than 1,023 bytes without a newline, the remainder of that line is treated as a separate line on the next iteration and can match names_a_problem or overwrite tail with a line fragment. Draining to \n when fgets does not end in \n prevents split lines.

Nitpicks

  • compat.yml: The Build musl toolchain step runs unconditionally even when steps.musl-toolchain-cache.outputs.cache-hit == 'true', unlike the Build cross toolchain step above it (compat.yml).
  • compat.py: for name in ("ltp-syscalls", "open-posix", "libc-test"): can use SUITES.

Antigravity review (Gemini via Ultra)

Adds cross-compilation and QEMU runner infrastructure, per-architecture baseline tables (expected-{x86_64,aarch64,riscv64}.tsv), a CI smoke workflow, and a mkfs-blockfs directory block-boundary fix to build and run LTP syscalls, Open POSIX, and musl libc-test across x86_64, AArch64, and RISC-V.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • Failed --smoke runs overwrite full-run results.tsv: In cmd_run (compat.py), an error during the initial pass writes partial results to run.out / "results.tsv" unconditionally, whereas run_retries and the final write at compat.py select "smoke-results.tsv" if args.smoke else "results.tsv". If --smoke fails mid-run in a directory that already holds a full results.tsv, it clobbers the full results.
  • clean_tmp() is skipped when a test exits 0: In main (compat_exec.c), clean_tmp only runs when rc != 0. Passing tests that leave scratch files or POSIX shm/semaphore entries behind—or a test that times out (timed_out = 1) and has its background children SIGKILLed just as the group leader exits 0 (compat_exec.c)—will leak entries in /tmp and /dev/shm across the rest of the batch. Calling clean_tmp() unconditionally after each test avoids cross-test accumulation.
  • Host build paths leaked into baseline TSV notes: clean_note strips temp-dir suffixes, PIDs, and timestamps, but leaves absolute host build paths such as /opt/veridian/compat-build/<arch>/ltp-full-20260930/... in expected-x86_64.tsv, expected-aarch64.tsv, and expected-riscv64.tsv. Stripping .*?/ltp-full-[0-9]+/ in clean_note prevents unnecessary diff churn when VERIDIAN_ROOT or COMPAT_BUILD differs.

Nitpicks

  • results_from_logs: When a single serial log contains multiple ranges of the same suite (e.g., serial-retry-*.log from run_retries or multi-range --resume), suite_of(m[1]) != suite is false on subsequent _RUN_LINE matches, so the existing SerialParser instance (including summary_seen = True) is reused across ranges. Resetting parser state after COMPAT-SUMMARY would keep per-range parsing isolated.

Cross-compiles LTP (syscalls and the Open POSIX Test Suite) and musl libc-test into per-architecture compatibility rootfs images, adds an in-guest test runner (compat_exec / run.sh) and host QEMU orchestrator (tools/compat/compat.py) with baseline expectations for x86_64, aarch64, and riscv64, and fixes mkfs-blockfs directory entry block-boundary alignment.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • Stale serial-*.log files across non-resumed runs: In cmd_run and Worker._boot, a fresh run without --resume does not remove old serial-*.log files from target/compat/<arch>/. If that run is later interrupted and recovered with cmd_collect, out.glob("serial-*.log") will ingest logs from earlier runs alongside the current run. Clear existing serial-*.log files at the start of cmd_run when not args.resume.
  • Silent fork() failure in compat_exec: In main, if fork() fails (e.g., EAGAIN/ENOMEM after a previous test leaked processes), compat_exec emits rc=127 (EXECFAIL) without a COMPAT-LOG line naming fork and strerror(errno), unlike the open() failure path right above it (compat_exec.c). Logging the fork error will distinguish process/memory exhaustion from a missing test binary.
  • Open POSIX pass counts in docs vs. expected TSVs: CHANGELOG.md and docs/compat/COMPATIBILITY-PLAN.md report Open POSIX PASS counts of 1,571, 1,566, and 1,566 on x86_64, aarch64, and riscv64, whereas expected-x86_64.tsv, expected-aarch64.tsv, and expected-riscv64.tsv contain 1,569, 1,565, and 1,565 PASS entries (likely after marking tests FLAKY).

Nitpicks

  • scripts/build-compat-rootfs.sh: The stamp check tests ! -d "${LTP_STAGE}/opt/ltp" but not ! -d "${LTP_SRC}", even though compose_root and compat.py lists read from ${LTP_SRC} unconditionally.
  • userland/tests/compat/compat_exec.c: Running clean_tmp unconditionally rather than only on rc != 0 would also catch passing tests that leave /tmp/LTP_* or /dev/shm/ltp_* behind.

Suggestions

  • scripts/build-compat-rootfs.sh: Under set -euo pipefail, the pipeline ending with
    while read -r name; do
        [[ -f "${bin}/${name}" ]] && install_stripped "${bin}/${name}" "${dst}/${name}"
    done
exits with status 1 if the alphabetically last name in the sorted list is absent from ${bin} (for example, an excluded test or a non-installed executable in ${LTP_SRC} sorting after writev07), because a while loop returns the exit status of the last command executed in its body. Use if [[ -f "${bin}/${name}" ]]; then install_stripped ...; fi (or append || true).
  • userland/tests/compat/compat_exec.c and child: main opens OUTFILE with O_CLOEXEC and child duplicates it onto fds 1 and 2 via dup2(out, 1) and dup2(out, 2). If compat_exec is ever invoked with fd 1 or 2 closed so open() returns 1 or 2, dup2(out, out) is a POSIX no-op that does not clear FD_CLOEXEC, causing execvp() to close the child's stdout or stderr. Since the parent never execs and closes out immediately after fork(), drop O_CLOEXEC from open().
  • userland/tests/compat/compat_exec.c: clean_tmp only runs when rc != 0 and only removes /tmp/LTP_*. Running clean_tmp unconditionally (and cleaning /dev/shm/ltp_* or leftover POSIX shm/sem objects if a test crashes mid-run) would avoid accumulating state in /tmp or /dev/shm across a 4,000-test single-boot run when a passing or crashed sub-process leaks temporary files.
  • tools/compat/compat.py: In cmd_run, loading previous_times on --resume does suite, tid, ms = line.split("\t") without skipping blank or #-prefixed lines, unlike read_tsv.

Nitpicks

  • tools/compat/compat.py: The module docstring's Subcommands: list omits collect ([cmd_collect](file:///home/parobek/actions-runner/ve[agy] print timeout after 8m0s with turn in progress; returning partial output

Adds a cross-architecture conformance test harness and rootfs builder for LTP syscalls, the Open POSIX Test Suite, and musl libc-test, along with per-architecture baseline expectation tables (expected-{x86_64,aarch64,riscv64}.tsv), a directory block-boundary fix in mkfs-blockfs, and CI/gate integration.

Blocking issues

None found.

Suggestions

  • Serial protocol spoofing and false prompt detection from unprefixed guest stdout: SerialParser.feed searches for "COMPAT-" anywhere inside a line (line.find("COMPAT-")) rather than anchoring to the start of the line (or after a known prompt prefix), and Guest.read_until checks PROMPT in line and any(m in line for m in PANIC_MARKERS) across raw serial output including test log dumps between COMPAT-LOG-BEGIN and COMPAT-LOG-END. Any test whose output happens to contain "COMPAT-END", "root@veridian", or "panicked at" can corrupt parser state, prematurely satisfy prompt waits, or trigger a false panic abort. Anchor COMPAT-* markers to line start (except right after a shell prompt) and suppress prompt/panic matching while inside a COMPAT-LOG-BEGIN..COMPAT-LOG-END block.
  • Unquoted $args in the in-guest runner undergoes pathname expansion: In userland/tests/compat/run.sh, "$exec_helper" ... $args relies on word splitting for multi-argument LTP entries, but without set -f (noglob) /bin/ash will also glob-expand any *, ?, or [...] tokens in $args against /tmp. Enable set -f before the loop.
  • /tmp/LTP_* cleanup in run.sh only runs when compat_exec exits non-zero: In userland/tests/compat/run.sh, compat_exec returns 0 even when the child test fails (FAIL/BROK/signal) and only returns 3 on timeout (timed_out). Consequently, || rm -rf /tmp/LTP_* is skipped for failing/crashing LTP tests that abort before removing their temporary directories, allowing stale /tmp/LTP_* trees to accumulate across a 1,500-test shard. Clean /tmp/LTP_* unconditionally after each test.
  • --resume overwrites times.tsv with only the resumed subset: In cmd_run, times.tsv is rewritten from run.times without merging existing entries from times_path. Running with --resume discards timing history for all tests that passed in the earlier run, degrading duration-based shard balancing on subsequent runs.
  • scripts/dev/gate.sh --compat without --rootfs only stages the x86_64 base rootfs: In scripts/dev/gate.sh, when --compat is passed without --rootfs, line 157 runs scripts/build-busybox-rootfs.sh rootfs (x86_64 only), and then loops over COMPAT_ARCHES (x86_64 aarch64 riscv64). If target/rootfs-aarch64 or target/rootfs-riscv64 was not previously built, check_base_rootfs fails immediately. Stage scripts/build-musl-rootfs.sh "$arch" for aarch64/riscv64 when [ $rootfs -eq 0 ].
  • Race between normal child exit and timeout deadline in compat_exec: In userland/tests/compat/compat_exec.c, if the child exits 0 during the nanosleep just as now_ms() >= deadline becomes true, timed_out is set to 1 and the subsequent blocking waitpid reaps the clean exit (rc = 0), but classify checks if timed_out: before if rc == 0: and compat_exec returns 3. Do one final waitpid(pid, &status, WNOHANG) check or clear timed_out if waitpid reports WIFEXITED(status) && WEXITSTATUS(status) == 0.

Nitpicks

  • .github/workflows/compat.yml: Uses actions/cache/restore@v4 without a corresponding save step; if compat.yml runs when ci.yml has not populated that exact cache key, the newly built musl toolchain is never saved back to the cache. Also add tools/compat/test_compat.py to on.pull_request.paths.
  • scripts/build-compat-rootfs.sh: Hardcodes local mkfs="${mkfs_dir}/target/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/release/mkfs-blockfs", which breaks if CARGO_TARGET_DIR is set in the environment or on a non-x86_64 Linux build host.
  • userland/tests/compat/compat_exec.c: kill(-pid, SIGKILL) runs after waitpid(pid, ...) has already reaped the process group leader pid; killing -pid before reaping pid (or while pid is still a zombie) avoids any theoretical PID reuse window.

Autofix Details

Bugbot Autofix prepared fixes for both issues found in the latest run.

  • ✅ Fixed: --first skips later suites too
    • The --first offset is now applied only to the first selected suite; later suites start at test 1.
  • ✅ Fixed: Partial update drops other suite rows
    • build.tsv rows are now merged only for the selected suites, so merge_expected and report no longer treat unrun suites as covered.

Codecov Report

✅ All modified and coverable lines are covered by tests.

📢 Thoughts on this report? Let us know!

Antigravity, Codex, Copilot and CodeRabbit (19 threads):

- Results: a full run fails when a test expected to PASS has no
result; a range counts as done only if every test in it has one and
the summary names its last test; the runner stops when compat_exec
dies, so the host records that test as CRASH and boots again.
- --update refuses results with gaps in a suite they touch (--first,
interrupted runs, partial collects), and only the selected suites'
build-time rows are loaded, in smoke runs too (so a compile-only test
that stops building fails the smoke comparison).
- Prompt and panic detection ignores test output (COMPAT-LOG lines);
--first applies to the first suite only; a guest that died between
ranges is replaced; --resume keeps earlier times; x86_64 without KVM
  is refused unless --tcg.
- compat_exec: OUTFILE is opened before fork (a test whose output
cannot be captured is not run); a test that exits as the deadline
passes is not a timeout; LTP_* directories in /tmp are removed after
any failed test without starting a process. run.sh: set -f.
- The image gains LTP's shell API commands (tools/apicmds): ioctl02,
the one shell test in runtest/syscalls, now passes on all three
architectures (LTP 24 of 1,552, rerun on each).
- gate.sh --compat builds the kernels and each selected base root;
run-compat-tests.sh takes options without an architecture; the
workflow saves the toolchain caches it builds and runs three guests.
- sem_timedwait/9-1 is FLAKY (failed once in four x86_64 runs: a forked
child missing from /proc for a moment), noted in KNOWN-LIMITATIONS.

Gate (--boot --rootfs) on this tree: host 4,779; boot 43/64/57 and
47/68/61; BUSYBOX_ALL_PASS everywhere; x86_64 smoke 0 regressed; compat
tools 34 tests.

Thanks for the review. Answered in 2b83053:

  • Prompt and panic detection from test output: fixed. Test output reaches the console only inside COMPAT-LOG lines (compat_exec writes the rest to a file), and prompt and panic matching now skips those lines; a prompt still counts when it is the unfinished last line. Two tests cover it. (The names in the review, Guest.read_until, PANIC_MARKERS and COMPAT-LOG-BEGIN, are not in the code, but the problem was real.)
  • Pathname expansion of $args: fixed with set -f.
  • /tmp/LTP_* cleanup only after a timeout: fixed, without a process per test. compat_exec now removes the LTP_* directories in /tmp itself (nftw) after any test that did not exit 0.
  • --resume and times.tsv: fixed. The earlier times are kept. Ranges are split by test count, not by time, so balancing was not affected.
  • --compat without --rootfs: fixed. It builds each selected architecture's base root, and the kernels.
  • Timeout race in compat_exec: fixed. A test counts as timed out only if it was killed by the SIGKILL. One that exited on its own as the deadline passed keeps its exit status.
  • Nitpicks: the workflow now saves the two toolchain caches it builds, and tools/compat/test_compat.py is in its paths. The hard-coded mkfs-blockfs path is the convention of every rootfs script (the tool's own .cargo/config.toml fixes its target), so it is left as is. The final kill(-pid) after reaping is safe: POSIX does not reuse a PID while a process group with that ID still exists, and the timeout path kills the group before reaping.

CodeRabbit:
- --update refuses results for a suite with no list (its coverage is
unknown), with a test; collect and compare take --root.
- A run with --first is compared as a subset.

Antigravity:
- build-compat-rootfs.sh: the binary-copying loop used `[[ ]] &&`, so
under set -e and pipefail a last name that is not an installed binary
would end the build; it is an `if` now (lists byte-identical after
  the rebuild).
- compat_exec: OUTFILE without O_CLOEXEC (dup2 onto itself would keep
the flag); a failed test's /dev/shm/ltp_* results file is removed
  too.
- --resume skips blank lines in times.tsv; the docstring lists collect.

Gate (--boot --rootfs) on this tree: rc=0, x86_64 smoke 0 regressed;
compat tools 35 tests.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The full suites did not finish on a GitHub runner: the Conformance job
hit its 330-minute limit on 2b83053, with timer- and fork-heavy tests
taking 30 to 90 s each there (KVM nested in a VM) against about 1 s on
a host. The workflow now runs the x86_64 tests expected to pass
(--smoke) with the TCG time limits; the full suites stay in
scripts/dev/gate.sh --compat. Of the 3,460 results that run produced,
only aio_suspend/1-1 (a race on in-flight I/O) differed from the
expected PASS; it is FLAKY now.

--retry runs each test that regressed once more on a fresh guest, and
counts it only if it fails again; one that passes is printed as a
FLAKY candidate. A timing-flaky test otherwise fails the gate, whose
rule is to run again in full (sem_timedwait/9-1 cost one such rerun).
The gate's smoke step, its --compat runs and the workflow use it.
Checked with a faked regression: the retry ran that one test, which
failed again, and the run failed.

KNOWN-LIMITATIONS, memory exhaustion: on x86_64 libc-test's oom tests
reach ENOMEM within 10 to 16 s when libc-test runs alone, and run to
the limit after the full LTP and Open POSIX runs in the same guest.

Gate (--boot --rootfs) on this tree: rc=0, x86_64 smoke 0 regressed;
compat tools 36 tests.

Thanks. Answered in 4ecd9f3:

  • [[ -f ... ]] && install_stripped ending the loop under set -e: fixed with an if. It had not failed only because the last name in sorted order happens to be an installed binary. The generated lists are byte-identical after the rebuild.
  • O_CLOEXEC on OUTFILE: dropped. The parent closes it right after fork, and if open returned 1 or 2, dup2 onto itself would have kept the flag.
  • Cleanup: compat_exec now also removes the /dev/shm/ltp_* results file a crashed LTP test leaves, besides /tmp/LTP_*. It still does this only after a test that did not exit 0. A passing LTP test has run its own cleanup, and checking both directories after every test would cost two directory scans per test for no gain.
  • Blank lines in times.tsv on resume: skipped, like read_tsv does.
  • Docstring: collect is listed.

Also in ed71ebc: the Conformance job ran out of time on 2b83053 (330 minutes; many timer- and fork-heavy tests take 30 to 90 s each on these runners). The workflow now runs the x86_64 smoke subset with the TCG time limits, and the full suites stay in scripts/dev/gate.sh --compat. --retry (used by the gate and CI) runs a test that regressed once more on a fresh guest, so a timing-flaky test is reported as a FLAKY candidate rather than failing the run.

Autofix Details

Bugbot Autofix prepared a fix for the issue found in the latest run.

  • ✅ Fixed: Retry errors discard first-pass results
    • On a retry-pass error, run_retries now restores the first-pass results for the retried tests and writes results.tsv (or smoke-results.tsv) before exiting.

- Cursor: a retry that fails writes the run's results before exiting.
- Antigravity: a run that does not resume removes the earlier
serial-*.log files (collect would read them as this run's); a failed
fork() in compat_exec is logged; the stamp check covers the LTP
source tree; the Open POSIX counts in CHANGELOG and
  COMPATIBILITY-PLAN match the lists (1,569, 1,565, 1,565: they were
written before the last FLAKY marks).
- The first smoke run in CI (ed71ebc, 56 minutes) found
pthread_spin_lock/3-2 timing out twice: it locks an uninitialized
spin lock and passes only when the stack holds 0, otherwise it waits
for an alarm VeridianOS does not deliver yet. It is FLAKY now.

Thanks. Answered in e19ed9d:

  • Stale serial-*.log files: a run that does not resume now removes the earlier logs in its output directory, so collect reads only that run's logs.
  • fork() failure: compat_exec now prints a COMPAT-LOG line with fork: <error> before the rc=127 result.
  • Open POSIX counts: right. They were written before the last three FLAKY marks. CHANGELOG and COMPATIBILITY-PLAN now say 1,569, 1,565 and 1,565, matching the lists.
  • Stamp check: the LTP source tree is now checked as well.
  • Cleaning after passing tests: left as is (answered on the previous round). A passing LTP test has run its own cleanup, and scanning two directories after every test would cost more than the rare leftover. A failing or crashing test is the case that needs it, and that is covered.

Thanks. Answered in 6597be7:

  • A failed --smoke run writing results.tsv: fixed. The error path now writes smoke-results.tsv in a smoke run, as the other two writes do.
  • Host build paths in notes: fixed. Notes drop the .../ltp-full-<version>/ prefix that old-API LTP tests print, with a test. The 15 such notes per list are cleaned.
  • clean_tmp only after a failed test: left as is (answered in the two previous rounds). A test that exits 0 has run its own cleanup. In the timeout case named, the leader exited 0 on its own, so the test finished. Its children are killed, but LTP's temporary directory belongs to the test, which removed it.
  • Parser reuse across ranges in results_from_logs: not a bug. Each COMPAT-END is its own record, collect never reads the summary, and a test that began and did not end is still reported. Ranges of the same suite in one log therefore give the same results as separate parsers would.

From the first CI smoke run with --retry (e19ed9d, passed). 36 tests failed on the first pass in one guest and passed on a fresh one. All of them do file I/O: AIO, lio_listio, fsync, mmap, and libc-test's fdopen, fscanf, stat and ungetc. The trouble began right after Open POSIX aio_suspend/9-1 (79 s, BROK), and from then on those tests failed in that guest without printing anything. That is one guest's state going bad after a particular test, not 36 independent timing flakes, so none of them is marked FLAKY. It has not happened in any local run. It is noted here for the syscall work; the retry kept the run's result correct.

Antigravity (blocking, 6597be7): LTP's do_exit() sets TCONF only when
nothing passed and adds TWARN on its own, and every new-API test warns
here ("kernel older than 4.4", from uname). classify checked TWARN
first, so exit status 36 (TCONF|TWARN) was counted as a pass with a
warning. TCONF now ranks above TWARN, with tests for 36 and 38.

The three expected lists were reclassified from the serial logs they
came from: 211, 208 and 208 LTP tests move from WARN to CONF, and their
notes give the skip reason (e.g. "__NR_capget not supported on your
arch"). LTP tests passing with the warning are 206, 203 and 202, not
410 to 417; CHANGELOG, KNOWN-LIMITATIONS, COMPATIBILITY-PLAN and the
README say so.

Also: compat_exec drains a line longer than its buffer, so its tail is
not read as a line of its own; lists uses SUITES.

Gate (--boot --rootfs) on this tree: rc=0, x86_64 smoke 0 regressed;
compat tools 37 tests. CI smoke on 6597be7: pass.

Thanks: the blocking issue was real. Answered in 3a5a0c3:

  • TCONF+TWARN counted as WARN: fixed. classify now ranks TBROK, then TFAIL, then TCONF, then TWARN. LTP sets TCONF only when nothing passed (do_exit in lib/tst_test.c), so exit status 36 is a skip, and tests cover both 36 and 38. The three expected lists were reclassified from the serial logs they came from: 211, 208 and 208 LTP tests move from WARN to CONF, and their notes now give the skip reason (for example __NR_capget not supported on your arch). The tests that pass with the warning number 206, 203 and 202 rather than 410 to 417. CHANGELOG, KNOWN-LIMITATIONS, COMPATIBILITY-PLAN and the README are corrected.
  • Lines over 1,023 bytes in print_log: fixed. The rest of such a line is drained, so its tail is never read as a line of its own. Checked with a 1,500-byte line.
  • SUITES in lists: done.
  • clean_tmp after passing tests: left as is, as answered on the previous rounds.
  • mkfs-blockfs target path: left as is. It is the convention of every rootfs script, and the tool's own .cargo/config.toml fixes the target.
  • Build musl toolchain without a cache-hit condition: the same as ci.yml. The script checks its own stamp and returns at once when the restored toolchain is current.

Antigravity:
- A smoke run fails at once if the image's smoke lists lack a test the
expected list has as PASS (stale_smoke(), with a test; build-time
results are left out): an image built before the list changed would
otherwise skip such a test silently.
- compat_exec exits 4 when it cannot open OUTFILE or fork, and the
runner stops on it, so the host boots a fresh guest instead of
running the rest of the range in a degraded one (the pattern of the
36 file-I/O failures in the e19ed9d CI run).
- run.sh hands sed the range's end; gate.sh skips the smoke step when
  --compat runs the full suites.

Gate (--boot --rootfs) on this tree: rc=0, x86_64 smoke 0 regressed;
compat tools 38 tests. CI smoke on 3a5a0c3: pass.

Thanks. Answered in 3aefc19:

  • Smoke run against a stale image: fixed with a preflight check. A smoke run now fails at once, telling you to rebuild the image, if the image's smoke lists lack any test the expected list has as PASS (stale_smoke(), with a test; the compile-only tests, judged at build time, are left out). The gate and CI rebuild the image just before, so this guards a smoke run made by hand.
  • open()/fork() failure in compat_exec: fixed. compat_exec now exits 4 after reporting rc=127, and the runner stops on that, so the host boots a fresh guest and carries on with the next test, not the rest of the range in the degraded one. This is what the 36 file-I/O failures in the e19ed9d CI run looked like.
  • sed bound: sed -n "$first,${stop:-$}p".
  • --rootfs --compat: the smoke step is skipped when --compat runs the full suites anyway.

This is the last fix round I plan on this PR, unless a review finds something blocking.

Antigravity (blocking, 3aefc19): when compat_exec could not open its
output file or fork, it printed an rc=127 result before exiting 4, so
the host recorded the test as EXECFAIL and resumed after it; the test
never ran on the fresh guest the exit asked for. compat_exec now prints
COMPAT-RETRY N ID REASON and no result; the host boots a fresh guest and
runs test N again, and records EXECFAIL (with the reason) only if it
cannot be started there either. A parser test covers the line.

Also: build.tsv is copied into the image and used when the output
directory has none (run and collect); a guest that shows no prompt
after a range's summary is dropped; smoke runs name their logs
serial-smoke-* and delete only those, and collect reads only a full
run's; the deadline multiplies in long long.

Gate (--boot --rootfs) on this tree: rc=0, x86_64 smoke 0 regressed;
compat tools 39 tests. CI smoke on 3aefc19: pass.

Thanks: the blocking issue was real (introduced in the previous round). Answered in 2996988:

  • An unstarted test recorded as EXECFAIL and skipped: fixed. When compat_exec cannot open OUTFILE or fork, it no longer prints a result. It prints COMPAT-RETRY N ID REASON and exits 4, and the runner stops. The host then boots a fresh guest and runs test N again. If the same test cannot be started on the fresh guest either, it is recorded as EXECFAIL with the reason and the run goes on. A parser test covers the line.
  • build.tsv only in the output directory: the build now also puts a copy in the image (/usr/lib/compat/build.tsv), and run and collect fall back to it.
  • No prompt after a summary: the guest is dropped, so the next range boots a fresh one instead of waiting a whole limit.
  • Smoke runs deleting a full run's logs: smoke runs name their logs serial-smoke-* and delete only those, and collect reads only a full run's logs.
  • limit * 1000LL: done.
  • clean_tmp after passing tests: left as is (answered on the earlier rounds).

…ilures

Antigravity (2996988):
- mkfs-blockfs keeps host modes within 0755, so /tmp in the compat image
was 0755 and tests that drop to nobody could not create their
directory (nftw01, nftw6401, symlink03: mkdtemp EACCES). The image
now gets /tmp as on Linux, 1777, through mkfs-blockfs's attributes
file. Rerun on each architecture, the three now reach LTP's statfs
check (still BROK, the reason recorded).
- After a test that does not exit 0, compat_exec clears all of /tmp
(but its OUTFILE) and /dev/shm, not only LTP's prefixes: Open POSIX
tests leave files, shared memory objects and semaphores under names
of their own. Names are read before anything is removed. Checked in
  a private mount namespace.
- mkfs-blockfs: the comment names the kernel's write_dir_entry.

Gate (--boot --rootfs) on the code: rc=0, x86_64 smoke 0 regressed;
quick gate after the expected-list notes: rc=0.

Thanks. Answered in 543a58c:

  • /tmp permissions: a real environment flaw. mkfs-blockfs keeps host modes within 0755, so /tmp in the image was 0755, and tests that drop to nobody could not create their temporary directory (nftw01, nftw6401, symlink03: mkdtemp ... EACCES). The image now gets /tmp as on Linux, mode 1777, through mkfs-blockfs's attributes file. Those three tests were rerun on each architecture, and the expected lists record what they report now.
  • Open POSIX leftovers outside the LTP_/ltp_ prefixes: after a test that does not exit 0, compat_exec now clears everything in /tmp (except its own OUTFILE) and in /dev/shm. Tests run one at a time, so nothing else lives there. This was checked in a private mount namespace: after a failure only the OUTFILE remains, and after a pass nothing is touched.
  • Removing while readdir runs: the names are read first, then removed.
  • The comment in mkfs-blockfs: now names the kernel's write_dir_entry.
  • compile_errors under make -j: left as is. It only affects the wording of the note on a test that did not compile. Upstream's per-test compile FAILED verdict lines, which decide the status, are unambiguous.
  • Duplicate times.tsv rows: not possible. run.times is a dict keyed by (suite, test), so a retry replaces the first time rather than adding a row.
  • The 12-block directory ceiling: noted. runtest/syscalls fits (about 10 of 12 blocks); more runtest files would need sharding or indirect blocks for directories, and mkfs-blockfs refuses an over-long directory rather than writing one the kernel cannot read.

Fix All in Cursor

Bugbot Autofix prepared a fix for the issue found in the latest run.

  • ✅ Fixed: Cleanup drops leftovers past 256 files
    • clean_dir now repeats read-then-delete batches while a batch fills all 256 slots and removes at least one entry, so more than 256 leftovers get wiped and an entry that can't be deleted can't cause an endless loop.

Cleanup drops leftovers past 256 files

Low Severity

clean_dir now snapshots names before deleting, but it stops after MAX_CLEAN (256) entries. A failed or timed-out test that left more files in /tmp or /dev/shm keeps the rest, so later tests in the same guest still see that residue. Open POSIX shm_open/23-1 is the known case: it creates about 1,000 objects and often hits the time limit, after which this guest continues.

Thanks. No code change this round: none of these is blocking, and I am not opening another fix round for non-blocking items on this PR. The real ones are recorded for a follow-up change to the compat tooling.

  • status = 0 after a failed blocking waitpid: cannot occur. compat_exec is the only process that waits for this child, so waitpid(pid, ...) cannot fail with ECHILD, and EINTR is retried. It is still worth initializing status defensively; that is in the follow-ups.
  • Retries share one guest: correct. The first retried test runs on a fresh guest, and later ones run on the same guest unless an earlier one took it down. The README overstates this. Follow-up: a guest per retried test, or rewording the README.
  • MAX_CLEAN (256 entries per pass): follow-up, loop until a pass removes nothing.
  • \r before byte 1,023 defeats the drain: follow-up, test for a missing \n before truncating at \r.
  • Breaking on parser.retry at once: follow-up. Today the runner exits right after COMPAT-RETRY, so the wait is one prompt; a wedged shell would cost a stall timeout.
  • collect loading build rows for suites not in the logs: follow-up, the same filtering run got.
  • Nitpicks (the forward declaration's place, blocks on directories that grow in mkfs-blockfs): follow-ups.

Separately, this run's Security Audit failure is RUSTSEC-2026-0385 (ctutils 0.4.3, published today), already in main's Cargo.lock. It is fixed in its own PR against main, and this branch will merge main once that lands.
