Description

Adds a Mosaic SegmentedControl: a single-select row of options, announced as a radio group (role="radiogroup" / role="radio").

<SegmentedControl.Root aria-label='Billing period' defaultValue='monthly'>
  <SegmentedControl.Item value='monthly'>Monthly</SegmentedControl.Item>
  <SegmentedControl.Item value='annual'>Annual</SegmentedControl.Item>
</SegmentedControl.Root>

Headless primitive (src/primitives/segmented-control/)

  • Roving focus via floating-ui Composite. Tab lands on the selected item and arrow keys move the selection. Arrow keys flip under dir="rtl", read from the nearest [dir] when focus enters the group.
  • value and direction live in one reducer. A selection carries its from/to indexes and the reducer derives forward / backward. A controlled value changed by the parent is synced during render, so the direction is set in the same commit as the selection.
  • data-selected is emitted ahead of the roving tabindex (same as Tabs) so the anchor transition is not dropped.
  • Its own primitive rather than Tabs: a segmented control has no panels, so tab / aria-controls semantics don't fit.

Styled component (src/components/segmented-control/)

  • Track: space-0.5 padding, background-subtle, concentric radius. Item: 32px, space-3 inline padding, text-sm, medium weight.
  • The selected pill is an indicator element anchored to the selected item with CSS anchor positioning (anchor-scope on the root keeps multiple controls apart). Its leading edge moves on base and its trailing edge on slow, both with --cl-ease-enter (no overshoot), so the pill stretches toward the new option. No JS measures layout.
  • Browsers without anchor positioning, and Firefox (which positions anchors but doesn't transition them), get a pill inside the selected item that scales in. Detected with -moz-appearance: none, as in scroll-area. The fallback query is written as the exact negation of the main one because the CSS build rewrites a bare (-moz-appearance: none) to (appearance: none).
  • Both paths render .cl-segmented-control-indicator, so one rule restyles the selection in every browser.
  • Motion is instant under prefers-reduced-motion.
  • Under forced-colors, the indicator uses Highlight and the labels use ButtonText / HighlightText / GrayText. The text colors go through a private custom property because StyleX makes a forced-colors key next to the (hover: hover) key mutually exclusive with it.

Swingset page added under Components. Changeset is empty, since the component is new and unreleased.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds a segmented-control primitive with controlled and default selection, radio-group semantics, keyboard navigation, disabled states, and selection indicators. Adds a styled Mosaic component with exported props and tests. Adds primitive and Swingset documentation, plus default and disabled stories.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to eab95

Reordering controlled options without changing the selection may leave keyboard focus on a different option than the selected one. This is a bounded edge case, so the merge risk is low, but it merits a fix or explicit acceptance.

instead, preserving selection for keyboard navigation while avoiding pointer and

segmented-control item render path, while preserving aria-disabled on the
rendered item so disabled options remain focusable but are skipped during
composite navigation.

selection.value, and update out of render and into the existing useLayoutEffect,
so it runs after item refs are committed. Include the synchronization’s
referenced values in the effect dependencies while preserving its existing
comparison and update behavior.

only when the selected value changes. Track the previous value and use it to
distinguish value changes from item-order changes; continue updating activeIndex
whenever the selected item’s index changes.
