An update: cert-manager/cert-manager#4835 was reopened and has now been rebased with a fix for the underlying bug — see cert-manager/cert-manager#4835 (comment) for the details.

Once it merges and a cert-manager release containing the fix is available, this repo can bump its github.com/cert-manager/cert-manager dependency, switch main_test.go back to fixture.RunConformance(t), and drop the workaround comment. Leaving this issue open to track that final step.
