If a volume changes mid-typing into the menu the user is forcibly taken away from it.

This is not really an ill of the volume and more so of the WayfireAutohidingWindow’s handling of active popovers of WayfireMenuButtons wanting to be « active ».

For example, a notification being picked up by the notification widgets while the clock popup calendar is shown will have the same effect.

I think a good fix would be to account for multiple « active » popovers, and let the widgets which use the wfpopover « battle it out », by only trying to grab focus when explicitely requested by the user, whatever that may mean for each.

Yes I think the answer really lies in splitting 'pop up' action into two ideas. User requested and automated. If there is a manually popped up popup it shouldn't be dismissed by an automated one

Now, apologies if that is part of what you meant, but personally, i think popups shouldn dismiss others ever. It makes it all too easy to, for example (and admitedly, mainly) miss a notification you might care about, as well as for example, many chat applications send sound and a notification when recieving a message, currently volume/mixer and notifications battle it out, with whichever comes later being the popover that ends up being shown.
