Unlike how in discord currently, when you paste text to replace selected text, the replaced text is just deleted and in it's place goes the pasted contents.

Upon pasting text on selected text, the text that was replaced is used as the text that will be displayed, and the pasted contents are the link.
Alternatives considered
Doing the masking manually.
